Adding a sound card?
Hi, I have a Pavillion G7054uk, I'd like to fit a sound card and bought a Asus Xonar DG 5.1 pci, tried to fit it onto the motherboard but it doesn't fit. What am I doing wrong? I thought all pci x16 slots were the same, do I need a particular card?
Hi:
If this is the motherboard you have...then you need a PCie x1 audio card which fits in one of those 3 small black slots beneath the PCIe x16 video card slot.
Examples of PCIe x1 audio cards...

Added sound card, no onboard audio no more
i added an sb live value for the use of the joystick port only, not wanting to use ti as a sound card. the onboard audio of my 865pe neo2 fis2r msi 6728 no longer works. so how can i get back my onboard audio? my speakers are still plugged into the onboard. is this even posible? to use onboard audio, but use my joystick on the sb live card when playing games? or is it only one or the other? do i need to go into the bios maybe and tell it to use onboard audio? like maybe it changed cus of the new sb live value card?
ok, i hooked up my speakers to the sb live card, it's fine i guess , but is it possible to use onboard audio with joystick port only from the live card? or because i have a sound card installed now, does that totally disable onboard completely unless i removed the live card?Yep No is the Answer, Because as soon as Windows Sees that you have a PCI sound card, it will not allow the Onboard sound chips Drivers to Load upon Bootup, I cant believe that you went through the Trouble of Installing a Sound Card that has a "MIDI" port, Instead of just Getting a USB Joystick , as the New USB Joysticks are Much more Responsive and Support Many More Games, and You can Get one For Less $ then you Paid for the Soundblaster .....Sean REILLY875

Adding (not replacing) a sound card
Every previously-owned computer included extra slots for expansion cards - not so my Pavilion HPE-112Y, Product #VT637AAR-ABA. What's worse, the sound handler is not a separate card but is built right into the motherboard - and that device is acting up. I still can play audio files via Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or other programs, but the sound device apparently is not correctly reporting the file type to other programs. This has sabotaged my ability to load sound into Poser 8, which I otherwise could do.
With the help of Poser support staff, I have ruled out all other possibilities (I just downloaded and installed the latest codec pack for Windows 7, which ruled out the last alternative cause. I am NOT missing codecs).
Replacing the soldered-in sound device is out of the question, so how do I add a sound card?
This question was solved.
View Solution.Milt, any of the Creative Labs Soundblasters should work fine. They are rated highly. However, I have continued to use my integrated sound because drivers for the Soundblaster have been known to cause problems. This is the case with any sound drivers, however. If this is the only way that you can use Poser, give it go.
Good luck!

Black screen when sound card is added...K8T Neo FIS2R
As the subject line says:
I am trying to install a sound card, a trusty Creative Labs Audigy and in ANY pci slot get a black screen upon boot up, no beep!
I deleted the onboard video drivers, went to Bios and disabled the realtek alc97...
In the farthest pci slot from the AGP slot I have a LAN card that works fine, but for some reason the sound card just doesn't want my PC to boot IN any slot...Any ideas? I did a search but found nothing that would help at this point.

[SOLVED] Mic does not work on Intel ICH8 (rev 3) sound card
Hi, folks.
I cannot get my sound card to record anything, using a built-in microphone. Audio output works just fine, though. I hope someone can help me, I have been banging my head against the wall for some time over this issue...
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite A200-1J0 (PSAE6E-04R036G3). alsamixer settings are fine, I tried supplementing additional options to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, but no luck, tried some of the combinations (model=<> position_fix=<>).
When recording sound with gnome-sound-recorder, with Capture set as input, nothing is heard. Skype can't record anything, either. I can't even get the crackling or hissing sound like some users do.
Should I try to get the latest ALSA?

Last edited by teMplaryum (2010-01-26 10:15:18)Hi there!
I had the very same problem with the same soundcard and found this thread.
The problem got solved for me by adding the same line as you have to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
However, I also had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf and add:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba power_save=0
Notice the difference on the "model=toshiba" part.
However, my laptop is not a Toshiba, but a Compal IFL90.
I remember that in Ubuntu I needed(a long time ago) to add a line to /etc/alsa.conf with model=toshiba. I figured it might be worth a try, and well, it did.
I hope this can help someone else.

New sound card (E-MU 1212M) won't record higher than 48kHz
I'm running Windows XP Pro/SP2 with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 processor (motherboard is Elitegroup 848P-A). I have 1GB of RAM installed.
I do a lot of vinyl transfer work. I decided to upgrade sound cards to the E-MU 1212M to improve the overall quality of my audio.
The card install went well. I'm receiving an audio signal just fine. I can playback at 44.1, 48, 96, 192.
The only hitch is when I try to record. I can record at 44.1 & 48 but if I try to record at 96 or 192 I get the following message:"Another application has caused a sample rate change that makes the current session invalid. You may accept this change by loading session at the new sample rate indicated below...." The sample rate that it shows me is always 44.1 So when receiving this message it always wants to push me back to 44.1 This message pops up immediately after I hit the red "record" button.
There are no other audio applications similar to Audition installed on my set up. I have turned off the system sounds, the 1212M card is recognized as the default audio device. The on-board sound card has been disabled along with its drivers. Gone also are the drivers from my previous sound card.
The settings between the 1212M and Audition are following along with each other. If I set the 1212M for 44.1, 48, 96, or 192 and then open up Audition and check the hardware settings, its at whatever I had set the 1212M to.
Ive also gone through what items are being loaded during start-up of my computer. Ive tried disconnecting from the internet and shutting down all programs that might be active, ensuring that no other programs are running other than Au 3 and the 1212M PatchMix panel.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time.
-DLedin"Before you did that, did you start a new session at 96k, and it still won't record into it? "
If you're asking if I first start a new session in PatchMix, yes, that's correct. I call up the 96k session in PatchMix first. Then I go and open up Audition to try to record.
If you're asking me if I start a new session in Audition 3 first, then I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that. Remember, I'm new to Au 3. When working in Audition 1.5, I could hit the "record" button and a window would pop up, prompting me to enter a sample rate and bit depth for the audio I'm about to record. I enter what I want to do and press "OK", then Audition starts to record. I don't know if that window is what you're referring to as a "session".
If that is a what you mean by "session" then I would need to do some experimenting by setting PatchMix to 44.1, then open up Audition, hit "record", specify 96/24 in the window that pops up and see what happens. I would hope that I'd get a message from PatchMix that I need to go to set PatchMix for a 96k "session". That's actually a possibility I hadn't previously considered trying. I'm at work now but will look into this possibility after I'm back home & report back.
-DLedin
EDIT: Since my last reading of your message you added a question:"Also, when you set the session up, did you take the check out of the 'use default' box?"
Please specify which application you're referring to when you say "session". PatchMix uses the term quite a lot. If there's a "use default" box somewhere that I need to take a look at then I need to know if it's in Audition 3 or PatchMix and just where to find it. Also, should that "use default" box be checked or unchecked? I appreciate your patience. -
[SOLVED] Sound card not recognized
I tried following the ALSA setup guide on the Wiki to get my sound working but I don't think Arch recognizes my sound card. I found out from lshwd that the module is snd-intel8x0 so I modprobed that and snd-pcm-oss, changed the values in alsamixer, added myself to the audio group, installed alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-oss and restarted everything but I still have no sound. Here's some output:
lsmod | grep '^snd'

The wiki says that if you have controlC0 and pcmC0D0p in that output then the modules have been loaded properly and they are both there so I'm not sure where to go from here. Your help would be appreciated.

Setting ALSA sound card system wide (rather than just in KDE)
Hi,
I've got an HTPC with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card running Arch x86. It has its own integrated sound card for outputting audio via HDMI, which is detected by ALSA as a separate device. I've managed to set it as the default audio device in KDE 4 (via System Settings). This allows applications such as Amarok and SMPlayer to properly output audio to the HD 4350's integrated sound card, but software such as Flash and MPlayer (from the command line) are still outputting audio to the motherboard's built-in sound card. How can I change this setting on a system-wide level? I've tried running alsaconf as root and adding
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 2
device 3
to ~/.asoundrc; I got the card and device numbers from aplay:
[htpc@exia ~]$ aplay -l

Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]

No, I haven't tried that. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Thought you were done with me, didn't you. Actually, I'm feeling pretty good about how far I've gotten. Anyway, I'm trying to get my sound card working and I'm getting nowhere.
According to my kernel log it's detecting a CS4236B. I found some drivers that I think will work in /lib/modules/2.4.19/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x, snd-cs4236-lib.o and snd-cs4236.o
I load them with no problem using modprobe snd-cs4236, modprobe snd-cs4236
There is no error, and it's beeping now when I reboot so I THINK that was the right thing to do.
Anyway, when I bring up kde I'm getting an error:
Soundserver informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory).
So I look in /dev and, sure enough, there's no dsp in there. So I guess my first question is, how to create /dev/dsp. I tried to create one by adding alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs4236
to modules.conf.
And modules.devfs has
alias /dev/sound sound-slot-0
alias /dev/dsp /dev/sound
among lots of other things.
I'm afraid that's about all I can figure out at this point. Can anyone help me?
ThanksOK, that link did help some. KDE isn't giving the error any more, but sound still isn't working, sort of.
I tried mpg321 and xmms on one of my mp3 files that I know works fine, both report that they are playing the file, but nothing comes out of the speakers. Yes, I've checked the volume on the speakers, they work fine in windows and redhat.
Info Center shows Sound Driver:3.8.1 a-980706 (ALSA v0.9 Orc3 emulation code)
My rc.local looks like:
modprobe snd-cs4236
modprobe snd-cs4236-lib
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
chown sasdav.users /dev/sound/*
And my modules.conf has:
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs4236
alias eth0 3c59x
Obviously I'm missing something, any clue what it might be? -
Surround sound via external sound card
I'm looking to connect my W520 to a tv for watching movies. The video is all set up with a DP to HDMI adapter directly from the laptop to the tv. The sound, however, must pass through a receiver first. The receiver only has RCA inputs - it's quite old. I know the hypothetical setup would definitely work because I have a cable tv set top box connected that way.
What's missing is an external sound card that is:
- compatible with the w520
- capable of outputting 5.1 surround sound
- capable of connecting via RCA, be it through an adapter or not
Can anyone recommend a reliable external sound card for the job?Have you tried one of these?
dynadock PA3927U-1PRP dynadock U3.0
You can stream 5.1 audio (and the video for that matter as it supports two displays). It also supports USB3.0 as an added perk (the dock itself can be plugged into a usb 3.0 port for best performance). It has one HDMI connection, one DVI-I, and an ethernet connection builtin as well as the usb connections.
PS Missed the bit about you only having RCA connections on your receiver. Lol I would get a new receiver. But then again this device may help you as it does have analog outputs (front,rear and c/sub). You would need to build/find cables though (3.5mm x3 to RCAs).
Btw no SPDIF? If no your receiver must be a pretty old one. Hope its a good one ;-). If you have an coax/optical input then there are also USB devices that will provide 5.1 (maybe even 7.1 nowadays) via the SPDIF connection. -
Setting default sound card to card 0
Hi,
After following Arch Wiki for configuring Alsa I added the following to my /etc/asound.conf:
efaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.ctl.card 0
This works on my current session. However, sometimes when I reboot my computer, my primary sound card that my speakers are connected to, becomes card 1 and I have to update this setting to get my sound card working. Also, noticed that Chromium always look for card 0. That is, if my primary sound card is detected as card 1, I won't be able to play videos on youtube, neither using Flash or HTML 5.
Any idea how I can dictate my system to set my primary sound card as card 0?
Last edited by mohtasham1983 (2012-06-03 00:13:04)If both soundcards use different modules you can use e.g.
#/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-cmipci
or
#/etc/modprobe.de/sound.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-cmipci index=1
which both do the same.
If both soundcards use the same module you have to do something like
options snd-hda-intel index=0,1 id=SB,HDMI
(See modinfo of your sound module for suitable parameters like id, vid, pid, etc) -

Yes, you can add sound, but not by using PB (or Leopard's PB2.)
If you have your music playing while you record a PB2 video, the sound can be recorded WHILE you are capturing video, but there is no way in in PB or PB2 to add sound to existing video or still images (that you have already made.)
I do not know any app that adds sound to still images. (You can make HTML simulations by imbedding both a still image and a sound file in an HTML page, but that is not really adding sound to the picture.)
You can convert any snapshot, whether made with PB2, the original Photo Booth, iChat, or any other app that can make a snapshot by importing it into iMovie or QuickTime Pro and adding the sound track in one of those apps. Then save the file as a QT movie.
Even if you do not make the image move, the file will still be a QT movie file, and QT movies can contain sounds.
You could also use the same procedure with iMovie or QT Pro to add to or change the existing sound on a movie clip that has already been saved, whether recorded by PB2 (the original PB did not record video), WebcamTweaker, or any other app that can record movie or video clips.
So go buy Leopard, and enjoy. However, you will not be able to add sound to either the still or movie files you make using Photo Booth 2 except by using some other application.
If you would rather, you can certainly use iMovie and Tiger to do what you want without buying Leopard or any other software, but you will miss out on all the other new, fun features in Leopard.
Did that give you what you need?

Has anyone written an ASIO sound card VI?
Has anyone used ASIO sound card drivers with LabVIEW? I've seen a few requests for it, but no one has posted anything useful.
The standard LabVIEW sound VIs use lvsound2.llb, which seems to talk to DirectSound on Windows.
Thanks.Here is a follow-up to my posting on 5/17/2009, where I pointed out that we have an ASIO interface available for LabVIEW at http://www.lasi.arizona.edu/. If you are interested in this software, please contact me at:

Previous users of our software have reported a wide range of applicability for this software. This applicability has changed as the ASIO software and LabView program evolved. Our ASIO driver no longer works with the recent versions of LabView (LabVIEW 2010 and newer).
Some possibilities are:
1). Our ASIO driver will work with older versions of LabView (LabVIEW 2009 and older). There are often a number of sellers on EBay who are selling older versions of LabView. You can then use a program with the ASIO driver with this older version.
2). Produce an executable of your program (using an older version of LabView) that can then be used without even having a copy of LabView on your computer.
3). Modify the ASIO driver for the newest version of LabView.
The following is a further explanation of the history and current limitations of the code, which was prepared by Terry Leach, the consultant who wrote the ASIO interface and the GenMon data acquisition program for us.
Our ASIO interface was built in LabView 6.x using the CIN (code interface node) technology. Source code to interface to the ASIO 2.0 sound driver was obtained from Steinberg. http://www.steinberg.net/en/home.html
This development was performed under an NSF grant obtained and managed by Dr. Ben Sternberg of the University of Arizona.
During the development time, our ASIO interface consisted of expanding and generalizing the Steinberg code to allow easy creation of "channel" C++ objects as well as status bits to track ASIO sound buffer performance in real time. In addition C++ code was added so that we could call the Steinberg interface from the LabView development environment. This code was compiled and built into a CIN. The CIN was then incorporated as a binary directly into ASIO.vi. ASIO.vi then became our interface to the sound driver when in the LabView development environment. Several LabView applications were built making use of ASIO.vi. There are three distinct layers to the sound interface. The lowest layer being the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver of whatever hardware you intended to access. The intermediate layer being the Steinberg/UofA/LV CIN, and the final layer being ASIO.vi and its use in your application program.
Our applications, built on point acquisitions which were always a power of 2 (supporting real time FFT calculation), meshed very well with sound buffer sizes which were also powers of 2. The ASIO driver, at that time, supported a maximum sound buffer size of 16384 points. As the ASIO interface is built on double buffering this gave us 16384/(sample rate) = seconds of time to perform our application calculations in real time.
Several things happened over time.
1). The ASIO 2.0 driver's (low layer, for Echo Audio equipment) maximum point buffer was reduced from 16384 points to 2048 points. This reduced our application's processing time (prior to sound buffer lossage) to 1/8. While it would be possible to modify the middle layer to manage a virtual sound buffer of larger size, no further development funding was available.
2). The Steinberg code hard coded the name of the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver to be found and instantiated from the Windows Registry. As the hardware vendor produced new hardware and subsequent upgrades of the ASIO 2.0 driver to support that hardware, they also changed the name of the driver in the Windows Registry. For a quick fix, this required recompilation and rebuilding of the ASIO CIN, and subsequent update of the ASIO.vi. It would also be possible to scan the Windows Registry and let the user pick which ASIO 2.0 compliant driver to use.
3). As of LabView 2010, National Instruments no longer supports the CIN development interface. This makes it impossible to update the CIN as required by the aforementioned item. While it would be possible to convert the CIN to a DLL, we do not have funding available for this modification at this time.
To use the ASIO.vi LabView interface at this time, without further development, means running under an older version of LabView. It may also mean a recompilation and rebuilding of the ASIO CIN contained in ASIO.vi if the name of the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver in the Windows Registry does not match that hard coded into the ASIO CIN. -
[SOLVED] Audio dropouts with USB sound card
Hi! Recently I bought an external USB sound card (Music Fidelity V-DAC). If I plug in the USB cable the sound device is recognized by Phonon in KDE4 (kdemod).
If I play an audio file in Amarok (or VLC) the audio is indeed redirected to the USB sound card and played correctly. However, if I use my USB mouse, or USB keyboard dropouts are occurring in the audio signal. It seems that other USB devices are interfering with my USB sound card.
More details:
Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.33 and kdemod 4. Phonon backend is Xine. I also tried gstreamer, but this crashes Amarok/

I also tried an Ubuntu (9.10) live CD. Using ALSA or Pulseaudio a clean audio signal without dropouts is produced.
I wonder if someone can help me with this problem, or point me to more information. Thanks!

options snd-usb-audio enable_msi=1
After a reboot the problem still persists. I also tried another suggestion from this forum:
options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1
This doesn't work either. I tried to change settings in /etc/security/limits.conf, which looks like this:
@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - nice -10
@audio - memlock 250000
The USB sound card doesn't share a IRQ with another USB devices, as can be seen here:

I even tried to disable the internal sound card by blacklisting it:

[Solved] Sound Card Issue
I have been trying to set my default sound card as a usb headset that I got a while back before I started using arch linux. I have checked the wiki, the audactiy wiki, and a few other sources to get everything started. When I first configure everything using the guides, everything works well. However, upon reboot, the order of my soundcards change. There was a guide on the archwiki on how to set a defined sound card order, but I cannot find a way to acertain the snd_mia,snd_hda_intel equivalents to my sound card.
=======================================
cat /proc/asound/cards yeilds
0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfeaf4000 irq 16
1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfebf8000 irq 43
2 [P780 ]: USB-Audio - Plantronics GameCom 780
Plantronics Plantronics GameCom 780 at usb-0000:00:12.0-3,
=============================================
However the order of these changes when I apply
=====================================
cm.!default {
type asym
playback.pcm {
type plug
slave.pcm "hw:2,0"
capture.pcm {
type plug
slave.pcm "hw:2,0"
=========================================
to ~/.asoundrc in order to set my playback and capture device as my headset. Again, it works at first, but then the sound card order changes upon reboot. I understand that one can define the sound card order by editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and then applying (only changing snd_mia,snd_hda_intel to the sound cards of your computer)
=========================================
options snd slots=snd_mia,snd_hda_intel
options snd_mia index=0
options snd_hda_intel index=1
================================================
So I am merely asking how one would go about finding and defining the equivalents of snd_mia,snd_hda_intel for ones own sound cards, and then proceeding to set the default order using the method that the archwiki provided.

Use [_code_][_/code_] tags without the underscores to mark output of commands. Snd_mia and so on are modules. Look at the wiki again, search for lsmod. It is explained there. You could use that alsa configuration by using card names as references instead of numbers, which is also explained at the wiki, but I recommend sticking to modprobe approach. Read the whole chapter about setting the default sound card. It is explained step by step how to acquire vid and pid and use them. Your modules should be snd_hda_intel and snd_usb_audio from the looks of it.
It is supposed to be pcm.!default not cm.!default, you probably missed the 'p' when copying.
I did a quick page through the wiki on lsmod, and I set up the modprobe file. I also fixed the snippet of code that I added, and now everything works like a charm. Thanks for the help, and I hope you have a wonderful evening.
