Adding a System Sound (Effect)?

I have recorded a couple of alert sounds that I would like to have my Mac play. Where do they go, and what format are they supposed to be?
I have tried searching for "Basso" (etc.) to no avail. The default (built in) sound effects apparently do not exist on my Mac, despite the fact that they appear in the list and work just fine.
I know this is something simple, but I cannot find them! I have several pieces of software that can manage different sound formats. "Installing" the sounds is the problem.
Thanks.

Convert them to .aiff files and put them in your home folder's /Library/Sounds/. OPTION-click and hold the Dock's Finder icon and select Relaunch. Now, System Preferences->Sound->Sound Effects and select the one you want for the Alert action.

  • Have lost system sound effects for Finder

such as when you delete a file. Under "preferences" > "sound" everything is turned on. The only suspicious thing is that under "sound effects", in the line right below the box offering all the effects (bottle, frog, funk, glass, etc.) the "internal loudspeaker" is greyed out so that I cannot select it. (Sorry if the terms are incorrect - I have a German OS and am translating them).
I really miss the sound when deleting a file - it has saved many an untentional deletion! I feel like my Mac has gone speechless...
Can anyone help me recover the warning sounds for Finder?

  • Sound effects not working after upgrade

After upgrading to Yosemite, my system sound effects are no longer working. Instead of hearing my selected Basso sound, my entire screen flashes.  Other sounds, such as the audio track of a video, still work fine. If I use the "afplay" command I can hear a system sound. I also get sounds for incoming and outgoing mail.  But clicking one of the system alert sounds in the "Sounds" preference pane does nothing audible, and in other places where I used to get a Basso sound,  my screen flashes instead.  I'm aware of the Accessibility option that gives the screen flash in lieu of an audible alert, but that is turned off, and I have tried turning it on and back off again, to no avail.  My "Alert volume" is all the way up in the "Sounds" preference pane, and I've slid that back and forth too.
Can anyone suggest a way to reset whatever got confused in the upgrade, and get my alert sounds back?
I'm on a 13" mid-2009 MacBook Pro, if that matters.
    Thanks!

I had same exact problem - Reset PRAM and not works fine. I followed instructions here, and step 5 fixed it: http://www.iphonetopics.com/no-sound-after-upgrading-to-os-x-yosemite/

  • System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
    Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
    1. Go to System Preference-Sound
    2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
    3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
    4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
    5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance

  • Customising mac voice and sound effects

Is there a way to change and add new sounds/voices to system preferences? Im a Fan of Doctor Who and would like to user theire free sounds on my mac as systems sound effects.
    Thank you for your time.

If you go to ~(username)->Library->Sounds you can add your audio files there. They need to be in .aiff if they're not already.

  • Losing system sounds from internal speakers

    Hi,
    I have a iMac 24" and Harman/kardon soundsticks attached.
In my sound system preferences I set the souncsticks as output device, but set the sound effects (user interface sounds) to play back trough the internal speakers. This works fine.
But when I use the keyboard to mute sound (temporarily) and turn it back on, the system sound effects are gone. I have to reselect the internal speakers in the system preferences to get them back. Very anoying.
Is there a solution to this problem? Or how can I file this as a bug?
    TIA

  • How can I make the volume buttons on my iPod Touch control ALL sounds - not just alerts and system sounds?

I would like to TOTALLY silence my iPod.  I turn the volume all the way down using the buttons on the side, but this just silences alerts and system sound effects.  Then I start a game, and the game sounds still play.  Of course I can turn the volume down after the game starts, but by then I'm already busted :-)
    I don't know if it's related, but...
I can plug in my headphones and then turn the game volume all the way down. But when I remove the headphones, the volume goes back up again.

Some progess I see. To be honest, i would not waste your time with trying to connect using wireless.
You are likely to get poor connections and dropping out.
If its working using a cable, then there is no need to bother with giving me the network settings, bu see how it goes, because sometimes giving the TV a static IP address can give better results.
There is an example of a couple of powerline adapters on the diagram below. Just ignore the network switch unless you want to connect other devices which are near to the TV.

Trash your preferences. Trash your project render files. Switch off background rendering. Do not render. Export.

  • Playing Sound Effects with System events

I remember that years ago, it was possible to play sound effects with system events (start up, shutdown, insert/eject disks etc.) and am wondering if it's possible to do the same under Tiger and, if so, how.
    Thanks & regards,

9 had a slew of sound effects. OS X is not so forth coming but in one of the System Preferences, maybe Accounts or General (I'm at work on a PC and can't check) there is an option to turn on what few sounds are offered.

  • Adding sound effect

Hi ... I have done a search but not found quite what I'm looking for ... very new to imovie and don't want to screw up in the same way I did with iphoto and imusic by getting the file structure messy ... ie I don't really want to touch anything ! but i want to use a sound effect (waves on a beach) I have a .wav where do i put it ? is it OK to use a .wav ? should it go in the same library folder as the default imovie fx (ie somewhere deep in the bowels of garage band's support files) ? Thanks for your time ? Roger

    a) iM uses internally 48KHz aiff...- no .wav
    b) if you just want to use it single shot, simply drag'n drop your audio file into the timeline/audio track (iM will convert into aiff... donb't care)
    c) if you want your waves permanently in your "sound effects" pane, you have to wait until someone else answers, or I'll be home at my Mac (posting from an alien machine...)

  • Adding a sound effect

Now that I have several clips in the timeline, I want to add some sound effects. I want the sound effects to be timed to actions in the clip, and I want the background audio to mute when the sound effect plays. Guys, I am not laze--I have been searching and searching the electronic documentation and I cannot find what I need.
Whichever is easier for you--can you tell me where to find this in the "manual," or can you explain how to do it?
    Thanks,
    Ben

it sounds as if I have to manually make the adjustment for the background audio level to decrease when the sound effect is played.
FCE provides a lot of control over all details of editing, but you have to give the correct "instructions" to do what you want.
The basic point is that you must stack the "boing" sound below the audio clip that is linked to the video you captured (e.g. on track a3), move it right or left till the sound is synchronized with the bouncing ball and then listen to the result. You might not even need to lower the volume of the captured clip; what I suggested in my previous answer was for effects that had to substitute the original soundtrack. A "boing" might simply be on top of it. In any case it's up to you to make this decision. And if you decide you still want to lower the original volume you may follow my previous instructions.
Just a note: if you use iMovie you have to do basically the same; not much difference in this case (in iMovie though you do not see the sound track linked to the captured clip, unless you explicitely Extract it).
how make the sound effect happen at a specific time--picture putting a "boing" sound as a ball bounces. How do I do that?
See above: just drag the "boing" clip right or left till you get syncronization. You may also set Show Audio Waveforms in the Timeline Options of the Sequence Settings (select the sequence and cmd-0) and the waveform of the boing may be of help in this operation.
    I hope this is clear

  • How do I remove the "whoosh" sound effect?

I recently downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and I like the added features but I'm getting annoyed by what seems to be random "whoosh" noises. How can I disable this sound effect? Thanks a bunch! kmart69

Try this System Preferences>Sounds>Sound Effects tab and deselect 'Play user interface sound effects'.
If it's in Mail go to Mail>Preferences>General tab and you can control sounds there (independently of the above suggestion).
I expect other applications may also have there own Sound Preferences that can be modified on an app to app basis.

  • Does garageband use different amp sounds &effects I can use with my guitar?

I know I can plug my guitar into my iMac and use garageband to record music, but does Garageband also have amp models and effects that I can use with my guitar? Can I just plug my guitar into my iMac and make music with effects and sounds for my guitar?

I want a white Custom w/Gold but money is so tight lately... my Imac has become my main amp lately - I have 4 amps (2 vintage tube amps and 2 SS) but most of the time when I'm "wankin" alone I plug into my Imac - I have oodles of plug-ins and use Logic Express a lot more lately but still enjoy Garageband's simplicity...
I actually have ran my SOUND OUT into a small Fender Frontman and used it for my computer speakers (gives ya' more bite than a standard subwoofer system) - I'm trying to find another Frontman 15R on Ebay so I can do STEREO FRONTMEN - the Frontman has nice cleans and with the added reverb it sounds kinda nice...
Bucky email me - I 'll explain some other stuff about GB - [email protected]

  • Open and close window sound effects?

hello, i was wondering if there is a way to have a sound effect play whenever a window opened or closed or i open a file. anything like that? does anybody know where to go to do that stuff? thank you.

Never used it myself, but there is a hack that adds system event sounds.
    http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/xounds
I'm sure there will probably be issues with it when Snow Leopard comes out, so you may want to wait a few weeks after its release so the developer can address any incompatibilities.
Mac OS 9 had system sounds, but I personally think Mac OS X is better off without all the noise. About the only ones Apple kept are the general system alert sound (which is useful) and the empty Trash sound.
