Adding a volume to an already partitioned disk?

Hi everyone,
I am quite savvy when it comes to the Mac; working with different settings through Terminal and using Disk Utility, etc.
As the title says, I am trying to add another partition to my already partitioned Hard Drive, however, I'm having some trouble. I think it will be easiest to outline my current volume setup:
CURRENT: http://cl.ly/3ttK <-- Image
Snow Leopard - 200 GB
Media - 225 GB
Scratch - 75 GB
And what I want to do:
Snow Leopard - 150 GB
Media - 225 GB
Scratch - 50 GB
Design/Development - 75 GB
Using Disk Utility, I went in and changed the sizes of the current volumes to the new sizes.
I clicked on the '+' to add a new Volume to the Disk. When you hover over the '+' button, the description mentions: "Create a partition from unallocated space on the disk". This makes me think that after I had reduced the sizes of the current volumes, clicking this button would create a volume the size of the unused space on the disk.
This isn't the case though. Pressing the '+' adds a new Volume to one of the already created Volumes…
I've thought of changing the Volume Scheme to 4 (only possible while booting from the install discs), however I'm afraid that this will erase all of my data as when I choose this option, all of my current Volume names are no longer there (it's tough to explain this and because I'm booting from the disc at this point, I can't take a screenshot).
Does anyone have any idea how to add another Volume or if changing the Volume Scheme to 4 will do the trick?
Sorry if this has all been confusing, it's tough to get across
Thanks!

Actually, that would spit an existing volume.

*CORRECT !*
Sometimes you can resize partitions, but only by moving the bottom of a partition in the diagram. You cannot move the top.
So it looks like what you want to do is split the Snow Leopard partition, making it 150 GB, and make the remaining 50 GB your Scratch partition.
Then just rename the current Scratch partition to Design/Development.
See [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.

However . . . this sort of scheme is rarely a good idea. If you're doing it to speed things up, it most likely is actually slowing things down.
Unlike some other operating systems, OSX is designed to work best with everything in the same partition. What you're doing guarantees longer seek times, as the head must travel over all that empty space when it needs to go from something in one partition to something in another.
It also greatly reduces the effectiveness of OSX's "Adaptive Hot File Clustering:" OSX will move things around to get the files it uses the most onto the fastest part of the disk (the top of the diagram), and things that are frequently referenced together in the same part of the drive. As your habits change, it dynamically adjusts to optimize performance.
As it stands, your Scratch partition is on the slowest part of the disk.
Another problem that you don't seem to have (yet) can be having the free space divided up; if the free space in any partition gets too small, your Mac may slow down, and eventually data may be corrupted, apps may crash, and in the extreme your Mac will crash and refuse to restart.

I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".

Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:

Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

    Additional Information
Please note that OS X Recovery must be present on the computer's startup volume in order to use FileVault 2. Using RAID partitions or a non-standard Boot Camp partition on the startup disk may prevent OS X from installing a local Recovery system. See "OS X: Some features of Mac OS X are not supported for the disk (volume name)" for more information.
What seems to work, is reinstalling the OSX from the internet, and then using migration assistant to pull the user from the time machine backup external when logged into a temporary administrator user to move the original user back over.
Perhaps if you're stubborn, what would work is the following from the same article:
What to do if the installer warns that no Recovery System can be created
Some disk partition configurations may result in the OS X installer reporting that it could not create a Recovery System. In these situations, even if you are permitted to continue the install, you may want to quit the installation and create an external, bootable OS X hard drive with a Recovery System, first. You can continue your OS X upgrade on your computer's startup drive after creating an external Recovery System.
Your storage device must have at least 13 GB available (after formatting) to install OS X Lion or later and a Recovery partition.
These steps erase and reformat the storage device. This article instructs you on setting up a storage device to use the GUID partition scheme and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which are required to install OS X and a Recovery partition on your external storage device. You should back up any important files that are on the device to a different drive.
This procedure installs a version of OS X that is compatible with the Mac it was created with. Using this OS X system with a different Mac model may produce unpredictable results.
Your computer's serial number is sent to Apple as part of this process to help authenticate your request to download and install OS X Lion.

  • Failed to revert logical volume group while merging partition

    Hi All,
Previously, on my macbook pro, I partitioned my disk for win7 for my dual operation system and only left 120 GB for OS, now I want to delete win7 and return disk space to OS. Currently my OS is yosemite.
I have already deleted disk space for win7 and merged it back to disk0s3. And, I had a problem to merge disk0s2 with disk0s3.
I was told it is because I need to revet my Logical Volume Group. I am blocked at reverting it.

  • Added diskpace doesn't show up in Disk Utility

My Problem: I can't get my added disk space to show up on my RAID volume.
Here's what I have done so far:
I just added 3 drives to my upper controller. I now have 7 drives, each are 250 GB for a total of 1.37 TB of disk space. The 7 drives are configured into a RAID 5 array. I used the expansion option under "advanced" in RAID admin. Everything in RAID Admin looks fine. My array shows online, total space shows as 1.37 TB, everything is green lights.
I am using disk utility from my G5 Xserve to configure and partition the RAID volume. But the volume still shows 700 GB--the amount of space I had previous to adding the 3 additional drives. I have restarted the RAID and my Xserve, I have erased the RAID volume using Disk Utility, I have even re-initialized my Array using RAID Admin. What do I need to do to get my RAID volume to show up in Disk Util as 1.37 TB?

I also had this problem - added two 250GB drives to an exisiting RAID 5 array via the expand array part of RAID Admin. Appeared to work fine and the expanded array showed up in RAID Admin at the right capacity but refused to be updated on our Xserve (either through the finder or Disk Utility). I did the same as you have (formatted the expanded array through Disk Utility, re-booted the Xserve, etc.), but I couldn't get the extra disk space to show up.
I ended up deleting the array in RAID Admin (the data was copied off before I used Disk Utility on it anyway) and rebuilt it using the original drives plus the two new ones. After a re-boot of the Xserve, this showed up as the correct, expanded size once formatted in Disk Utility. I've since found out that you need to go to 'Advanced' and then 'Slicing' in RAID Admin, to merge the new slices representing the new drives after you add them during expansion. Perhaps if you haven't done this give it a try, re-boot, and see what Disk Utility has to say about the capacity of the array?
    Cheers

  • BootCamp on an already partitioned disc

I want to install windows xp using bootcamp. My disc has alredy been partitioned into two partitions (one for OSX startup and the other one for my documents etc.) when I open bootcamp assistant it says: "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." I found out that this means that my disc shouldnt be partitioned before the process, I still want to keep my old partition.
    What do I do?

I got my imac and all of the 2gb hd was partitioned and in the bootcamp tools I resized the osx partition to be 1tb and 1tb for windows

  • "Unable to determine destination partition, disk or drive" when Media deployment is used

We are heavy users of MDT 2013's "media" deployments -- in fact, once we finish testing a new image build on our lab server, media is created and is the sole method we use to deploy new systems due to many limitations.
We ran into the following issue lately when using USB sticks or hard drives for our deployment media. Deployment of an OS image fails at the "Inject Drivers" stage. The hard disk inside the computer is formatted properly, but the TS fails with
the error "Unable to determine destination partition, disk or drive".
I dug into the logs, and it appears that "Inject drivers" does a check for where the \Drivers folder should be placed. The problem is that most USB hard disks and many higher-end USB sticks show up as "hard drives" rather than "removable
media" when plugged into the machine. Adding another physical disk that appears as a fixed disk with an NTFS partition apparently confuses MDT and you get this error message. I think any "ReadyBoost enabled" USB stick has to show up on the system
as a fixed disk rather than removable, so if you use these you might have this problem.
The only workaround is to explicitly specify the disk number and partition number to use when you invoke "Install Operating System." The drivers step must take this information when determining where to put the driver store.
Is there any other explanation for why this would be happening? We're stuck with media deployment for the foreseeable future, and until Microsoft fixes the problem with handling of split WIM files, we have to use NTFS formatted disks/sticks...this might
be making it harder for the MDT logic to determine where to put the OS.

MDT should be smart enough to know that it should Skip USB drives.
However if you have a USB 3 Hard DIsk (not a USB Flash Disk), that might be the problem
    1. Try using only Flash Drives.
    2. Try plugging the USB Hard Drive into a USB 2.0 port
    3. Additionally try not to use USB Hard Drives that are *Larger* that the internal hard drive.
If you still have problems, can you copy your Bdd.log file to a public site like OneDrive and share the link?

You shouldn't do it. You have to erase the Windows volume with Boot Camp Assistant, so it will restore the space onto the OS X volume and that volume will have 750 GB.
As you did it with Disk Utility, you have to resize your OS X partition manually:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, and go to Partition tab.
    2. You will see a bar with Macintosh HD. You have to click it at the bottom right corner and drag it to the end of the bar, so Macintosh HD will use all the space of the hard drive, and press Apply.
    3. Close Disk Utility and your OS X partition will have 750 GB

  • I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, supports downloaded, and windows is on an external USB. How can I start installing Windows now? at startup it doesnt show up as bootable device...

    hi,
I am having a problem installing windows via bootcamp.
I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, downloaded and copied all the supports for windows, and windows is on an external USB as well. I had to stop the process the other day, so i shut down the computer. Now I am trying to boot from the USB, but I cant get to that point where the computer should restart and windows would start installing.
. After restarting, holding command, it doesnt show up as bootable device.
How shall I move forward? My disk is already partitioned, and if i start the whole process from the beginning, it wants me to partition again - although I already made a 100GB partition for windows.
    Please help me out.
    best,
    Zoltan

So, here is what happened when I tried to make it.(sorry for quality, i had to take them by phone)
At first when I opened it I saw that I could simply resolve it just by stretching the arrow at the bottom, giving the 100 GB back which I partitioned before via Bootcamp. At this point options was not available.
I didnt do it because you mentioned earlier that it might be not designed to install windows.
The second thing I tried I choose 1 Partition from Partition Layout. This time Options were available but I didnt see anything like GPT, the onces that are optionable are on the screenshot.
What do you think how shall I move on? I was thinking to give it a shot with option 1, just stretch it back and try everything from scratch.

If you mean partitioning your main internal drive, and using that partition for your samples .... then, no, I wouldn't bother.
