Adding a Windows partition

Hi Folks,
I understand that the official position is that the new Mac Pro only supports Windows 8 partitions, not Windows 7.  Does anyone know if there are work arounds for this?
Any thoughts would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Shane

8.1 is not only for touch, Metro is there and so is touch for those that have it and want it.
Overall it is to me, having used Vista then 7, just as big and important an upgrade (been using 8 since the first Dev Preview a year before release).
Some run Windows as a VM and runs quite well too.

  • Adding another Windows Partition

Right now I have Mac OS X and Windows XP via Boot Camp. I'd like to install Windows 7 and was trying to use Boot Camp but when I run it it wants to restore Mac OS X to a single partition and I'd lose my XP partition. Is there a way to partition my HDD again to have both Windows XP and Windows 7 without having to lose XP?

Step 1 is use WinClone to backup XP.
Step 2 take a look at Paragon CampTune to resize the partitions for OS X and Boot Camp
Step 3 shrink how much XP takes if possible so you can then create a new NTFS partition for Windows 7. Check the Microsoft Windows 7 "how to install" - listed there
You may find that works, but backup everything ahead of time!

  • Adding 2nd Windows Partition

Have BC installed on my MacBook Pro, with Windows Vista.
Rather than use CampTune (I'm scared) or reinstall Vista, I was hoping I could add a new NTFS partition out of the existing space I have dedicated to my OSX installation.
This space would be formatted with NTFS. Once created, I could then assign the space a drive letter in Vista and be able to use it for file storage.
Is this possible to do using tools in OSX? In Vista, the remaining space is recognized in Disk Management, but it is totally inaccessible, so I know I cannot add the partition in Windows.

You are scared to use CampTune to resize; you realize whatever rules there are, which would be the same as for any triple boot setup.
You can shrink Vista (though you really should leave more than enough headroom to do so).
Anything you do has side effects and often negative consequences.
Backup no matter what. Restore so Vista has enough room. Move to a larger hard drive. Upgrade to Windows 7 while at it.

  • How to add the sound drivers on your dual booted windows partition

As of today I succesfully added a windows partition to my MacBook (with the help of a friend) unfortunately I encountered a problem.
    I have no sound.
My friend said that I needed to add sound drivers in. But he didn't know how to do that.
If anyone can give me some help here I'd appreciate it  A LOT

  • Windows 7 won't boot after adding a third partition with gparted

I needed extra space on my bootcamp partition so I :
    1. resized macintosh hd partition with disk utility
2.booted with gparted live disk and "growed" the bootcamp partition
Now Windows doesn't boot. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
your Topic says '...adding a third partition' whereas in your message you don't mention this third partition...
So what is the right one ?
Nonetheless you might have a look at EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 to repair the Windows 7 bootloader.

  • IPod and Windows Partition

    Hello,
I've recently purchased the latest generation MacBook with a 4th generation iPod Nano. A couple of weeks ago I had my iPod connected to the MacBook while it was running Boot Camp (on Windows XP Service Pack 2) and soon after this I noticed that my iPod said that it had no songs. I opened iTunes (on the Mac partition) to find that all the data that was once songs is now listed as "Other". After no luck with getting it to work, I chose to restore the iPod back to factory settings, but the problem still persisted. Whenever I added a song to the iPod, it would show up in iTunes on the iPod as a song, but as soon as I disconnected, the iPod would say that it had no songs, and when I reconnected, iTunes couldn't detect any songs on it.
Since then, I have tried reverting iTunes to an earlier version (as I installed iTunes 8.1 around the same time as this and thought that this may have been the problem), restoring the iPod multiple times, and eventually used Disk Utility to erase the iPod to see if that would help. I've also been looking on many forums where users have had some similar problems and tried their fixes, but none have worked.
I came across this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493) today which suggested changing the Drive Letter on the Windows side, which I did and changed the iPod from 'E' to 'I', and then my flash drive which was listed as the 'G' drive is no longer detected on either the Mac or Windows partition. I also ran a "Hotfix" .exe file from the Microsoft site that the support article was linking to, which didn't appear to help either. As far as I know, there is no other device that has an 'I' Drive letter (sorry I don't know much about Windows as I've been using Mac all my life).
So if someone could help me out or point me to a relevant link, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks very much

...Anyone have any ideas at all?

  • HT4818 I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, it wants me to delete it.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X afterwards, I can no longer dual boot.

I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, BootCamp wants me to delete it before continuing.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X after running BootCamp and installing both OSes, I can no longer dual boot.  What is the magic sequence to get this to work?

    I've got the same quandary.
After upgrading my hard drive to a Momentus XT Hybrid and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion, I was surprised that I couldn't format partitions separately and then restore from my clone of the old Windows 7 Partition. I found that I had to use the BootCamp Assistant to manage it all, which essentially meant getting rid of the partitions and starting again...
I now can't get my Windows / BootCamp partition to boot, after adding a 3rd, ExFat, partition, when it was working perfectly fine before. I just get a lot of dos booting failures and a final message that "No boot device is available, press Enter to continue".
See the attached message, that I get when trying to boot the bootcamp partition, through Parallels 7; which also worked perfectly fine before.
Be good to know if there is a work around this in Mountain Lion as, if not, I'm thinking I might skip Bootcamp altogether and just install a machine drive via Parallels. As suggested here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1420754
I might even keep the virtual windows machine on a separate hard drive and then I'll have no need for the ExFat partitions altogether as that was designated for  sharing between Windows  and Mac.

  • Strange disc utility behaviour with windows partition

    Hi,
I have created a 30 gig partition for windows XP (FAT32) on my macbook, which all works fine, but back on the mac volume, I tried to make an additional 10 gig partition for which I planned to save all my audio work in Logic to. It appeared to create it fine, but the volume scheme was totally messed up in Disc Utility; i.e. the windows portion took up practically the whole scheme, there was 500 MB "unused" in gray, "Macintosh HD" had a tiny portion, which overlapped the blue used "system" part (also overlapped by the unused bit). I couldn't seem to fix this problem, yet doing command-i on all volumes gave the right numbers and it added up.
Has anyone else seen any strangeness? All I can think of is that bootcamp isn't too happy with additional partitions, so disk utility goes a bit mad so to speak! I know that bootcamp will only create a windows partition on a single un-partitioned volume. Essentially, I just wondered if I could make more partitions after installing a windows partition.
    cheers,
    David

    Hi Philip
Before you get too alarmed I think what Zeny described is, potentially, a totally different scenario to yours and not entirely applicable. From your description it doesn't sound like your PowerBook currently has any of the symptoms commonly associated with hard drive failure.
That said it is possible that there may be a bad sector on the drive, which an erase whilst zeroing all data will resolve. At the same time it may also just be a software glitch.
Either way, it is worth giving the PB and hard drive a full check with the likes of DiskWarrior, Drive Genius, Apple Hardware Test, etc.

  • How to customize Windows partition icon in bootloader?

Hi, I customized my windows partition icon in OS X but bootcamp's bootloader still shows the partition with a normal disk icon.
Is there any possible way to change the icon to customized icon?
I've searched lots of information on the net, couldn't find any clue for that though.
Please let me know if you have anything about it.

  • Windows partition wont' boot from internal secondary HDD? No bootable device error

Here is my scenario: I previously had a 500GB bootcamped HDD in my 2012 macbook pro. The boot camp partition was running windows 7 and the mac partition was running 10.9. I replaced my original HDD with a 250GB SSD, took out my optical drive, and replaced that (op drive) with my original HDD. When i boot from the main drive, the SSD, it successfully recognizes the HDD with the 2 different partitions on it. But when I try to boot into my windows partition(on the HDD) by holding option at startup and selecting the windows partition, I keep getting a black screen "No bootable device. • Can't mount my Windows partition

    Hey Arch Forums.
I've installed Arch64 and Arch32 on my desktop and laptop respectively, both on an array of Ext4 partitions (both have separate partitions for /, /home and /var). I followed the beginner's guide down to the letter, and now have both machines running GNOME.
Both machines also have a separate NTFS Windows XP partition, but the trouble is that neither can mount, browse or access the Windows partition without being root.
First off, typing 'mount /dev/sda1' (that's the Windows partition) resulted in '/dev/sda1 not in fstab or mtab.'
So, I added /dev/sda1 to fstab with options 'rw,users, noauto 0 0'. Rebooted, but then I found out that it decided to automatically mount itself anyway and it wasn't showing in places, and I still couldn't access the partition without being root. Anyway, so I sudo umount it, and then discover I need to add my user account to the 'disk' group to be able to issue mount/umount commands.
This worked, but it was still automounting on boot and I still couldn't access it without being root. I basically want to be able to just select the 'Windows' entry from the Places menu, have it mount and show on the desktop (it's not showing on the desktop when I boot up atm), and have Nautilus open up with the partition's root directory.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well, I was trying previously to mount it with ntfs, as that's what was used under Ubuntu. But it's working now with ntfs-3g, I don't need to be root to read/write the disc now. However, I'm still having trouble with mounting it as non-root.
First off, this is my fstab:
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    #/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    #/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    #/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
    UUID=6cae25c5-cc5b-42ae-ad3a-70e892274a34 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    UUID=f7e4d887-43d5-4ac4-869f-a2a5e4c16e2f /var ext4 defaults 0 2
    UUID=4a07547f-1fd6-41ea-8db7-469120830111 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
    UUID=08d54f59-520a-4e8e-9a9d-d440f2eff54e swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=5AB82DB8B82D9393 /media/Windows ntfs-3g defaults,users,exec 0 0
As you can see, it's mounting on boot up at the moment. When I put noauto into the options, it doesn't mount, but when I'm on the desktop and try to mount it as non-root, I get the error "ntfs-3g-mount: user has no write access to mountpoint /media/Windows". As I was typing that out, another error appeared telling me that DBus encountered an error as it did not receive a reply.
When I issue the mount command in terminal, I get "mount: only root can do that." - what should I do?

  • Windows bootloader although no Windows partition?

I wanted to install Windows XP on my iMac so I could run those Windows programs I run into once and a while. Anyways something happened on the Windows side of the install so I decided to just boot back into Snow Leopard and erase the Windows partition. That's exactly what I did. I erased the partition then added the extra space back to my Snow Leopard partition.
Now whenever I turn on my computer it starts the Windows bootloader and says like "No install found" or something like that. I can get around it by holding the option(alt) key on the keyboard and then selecting the only option which is Mac HDD, it then boots into Snow Leopard. But it gets annoying having to do that every time. Any way to fix this?
    Thanks

You didn't follow (or read:) the guide you are presented with in BC Assistant.
Boot from OS X DVD now and try to use "-" on that 2nd partition, repair, and then extended primary partition. Then use Disk Repair.
That isn't the way to remove a Windows partition. May not work.

If I buy a mac mini with a fusion drive and add windows using boot camp, can I make the SSD function be dedicated to the windows partition?

Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.
Do computers that come with a Fusion Drive support Boot Camp?
Yes. Use the Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition and install Boot Camp. The Windows partition will exist on the hard disk drive, not the Flash drive, and is not part of Fusion Drive Logical Volume Group. 3TB Fusion Drive configurations need to update to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 or later to install Windows 8. See iMac (27-inch, Late 2012): Boot Camp alert with 3T hard drive for more information.

How to proceed after having formatted ?
Thnaks in advance for your help.
    Best regards,

There is BootCamp software that does it for you, but it creates a FAT32 partition which you use the Windows 7 disk to change to NTFS, then you can install it.
Also you need to read the BootCamp instructions because you have to install drivers from Apple too.

I followed the rest of the instructions given here. I made sure to enter the second number with a + sign. After doing all of that all these checks worked:
Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?
Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?
Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?
I've always been able to access my bootcamp files from finder and I can try to boot from System Preferences -> startup disk, from rEFIt and also from my macbooks startup manager that I access by holding down option while booting.
I'm starting to think I've misrepresented my problem and that I've been looking at the wrong threads. Every time I try to boot windows I get a black screen with the Windows logo and some text saying something like "starting automatic recovery" or something like that. It then takes me to a blue screen displaying an error number and telling me to use recovery tools on the installation media. Maybe this is different from the problems I've been looking at in other threads.
I've tried using the same USB I used to install bootcamp with but it doesn't give me the option of repairing the installation.
EDIT: So I figured out how to edit replies. Anyway I just tried to boot into Windows and checked. The black screen with the Windows logo says "Preparing Automatic Repair". The blue screen gives me the error 0xc00000e.
