Adding addresses from "sent" mail to address book?

I've been getting an enormous amount of spam since years now, too much even for Mail's bayesian filters to deal with. I had the idea of separating my mail from "known" and "unknown" senders into sub-folders, but I am having difficulty finding a way to set this up.
The best way I can come up with is to add all "known" contacts to the Address Book and have Mail filter out "unknown" mails based on that - the most reliable source of "known" addresses I would like to add to Address Book would be the mails I have answered or sent, or in other words, the "sent" folder. Yet I can find no way of adding "to" addresses (from mails in that folder) to Address Book, only "from" addresses (or "senders") - and since these mails are in the "sent" folder, the "sender" would be... me.
Has anyone tried to do something similar, or is there another way around this?

The Mail.app stores all message recipients in the list of Previous Recipients and the autofill feature pulls from the Address Book and the list of Previous Recipients.
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Window and select Previous Recipients.
A previous recipient already entered in the Address Book has a vCard icon to the left of the name or email address. You can remove a previous recipient from the list or add a previous recipient to the Address Book that is not already entered.

IMac Mail strips sender from sent mail

I'm helping a friend who has an unusual problem with Mail on their iMac (10.9.5).
This first part may be a red herring. There are four email accounts on the machine iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, and one other linked to a domain name. For no apparent reason all four accounts suddenly stop working. If you take all accounts off-line and then back online again, sometimes three or four times, they will start working again. Similarly, if you restart the machine two or three times they will often start working again but stop after a couple of days. Both of these methods make no changes to any of the settings.
However, that is not the problem I'm looking for an answer to. The iCloud, Gmail and Yahoo accounts all work exactly as expected. The fourth account sends email OK but when it arrives it says "no sender". A machine running Windows, an iPad and an iPhone all have that account on them and are all using the same outgoing server settings but they can all send email without stripping the sender's details. The sender details do appear on the email in the Sent box of the iMac but not on the receiving machine. However, if the receiver looks at the full headers of the email, the Reply To Address is there.
I can only think of applying the 10.9.5 Combo Update or updating to 10.10. Any other suggestions?

Update released by Apple today can help you remove attachments from sent mails.
Open the sent mail: click on "MESSAGE", then go to REMOVE ATTACHMENTS.
And that's all.

How can I capture email addresses from Sent mail???

This may sound strange, but I'm trying to capture all the email addresses in my sent mail folder. At my work I want to send a newsletter out to folks that I previously emailed to let them know about new products. I have about 6000 emails, per year, in my 3 years of sending emails on my machine. I want to see if there is a program that allows me to go thru my folder and capture all [email protected] addresses and then I can go thru them later and delete later.
Any thoughts?

The script to use from the collection of scripts is Add Addresses (Mail) which adds addresses found in the selected messages (in the header fields "From", "To", "Cc", and "Bcc") to the Address Book. This is much more flexible than the "Add Sender to Address Book" available in Mail and provides a convenient way for creating mailing lists.

Adding address book to a backup

I'd like to backup the address book database with Retrospect.
Where is the address book data stored so I can add it to be backed up? I know that I can make a backup of it with exporting it but that's not what I want - I want it to be automated.

Remove attachments from sent mail - how to?!

Hi all.
Sometimes I'd like to keep sent mails but remove the attachment(s) embedded in there. How can I do this?

Mail missing from "Sent Mail" folder.

I searched my sent mail files for an email I sent out about 3 months ago. To my amazement, everything in the file before the date of Sept. 23 opened up with a line that went something like: "In order to view this document, you must first go online and download it." When I checked in the menu, it showed that Mail was online. I tried rebuilding my mail and every sent letter before 9/23 was deleted. When I go to my backup files, Mail tells me that the files are not Mail files. I'm perplexed, and haven't a clue as to what to do. This is not the first time I have had lost mail problems. Is Mail full of major bugs? Should I go back to Entourage? I never had a problem when I used it, but hate using any Microsoft applications.

I have this same problem. My Sent Messages.mbox says it is 1.94 GB so I know the messages are there. So far, I have found no solutions. Hopefully someone out there has some info - please!

How to copy address book contacts to Numbers 3

I updated to OSX 10.9 and Numbers 3. I can't drag or copy address book contacts to spreadsheets anymore. Apparently this feature has been removed. Any work arounds out there? Any ideas how to do this? I am utterly dependant on adding Address book contacts to Numbers spreadsheets.

We feel your pain. Nothing keeps you from continuing to use version 2.3. Just carry on as though nothing ever happened. It's not as though you'll be missing much by not running the latest version.

Adding Email Addresses from Mail to Address Book

I send out a lot of emails that I would like to save in my address book. Address Book automatically sorts the address by first name or last name. This makes it virtually impossible to locate daily or hourly all the emails that you saved to your Address Book. Especially when your Address Book has over 3,000 addresses. Is there anyway to save email addresses using Mail directly to a Group in the Address Book?

Welcome to the discussions, Big.
If you select an address in an email message you can drag it and drop it onto a group in Address Book, making a new contact and adding it to the group in a single operation. You can't do this from Mail's Previous Recipients window, though you can use the PR window, ordered by date, to see who you sent email to three days ago - but not hourly.

Adding address from Mail to Address Book as a Group

I receive email as part of a group, or multiple email addresses. I want to add everyone to my address book as a group.
Do I have to add each individual and then drag them into the group?
I mean if my church choir director sends email to the choir and it shows all the emails, can I just add al my choir mates to my address book and a new Group in my address book?

OK here is the solution to the fix. I simply deleted the account in address book and set it up again.
Working like a charm now.

Automatically adding contacts to Address Book with Mail?

This is my first post in the Apple Discussion forum, but I'm a happy Mac owner since July 2007. Here's a question I have; I searched to see if a similar topic appeared in previous discussions, but none turned up.
In Microsoft Outlook (on my work PC), I can set it up so that anytime I reply to an e-mail address from somebody new, the contact is automatically added to my address book. Is there a way to set that up with Mail and/or Address Book?
I was going through Address Book and noticed some VERY old contacts, but I know for some of them, I have more recent e-mail address. I hope I don't have to manually add all of them!

Hi Mark, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sadly, I don't know how to do it for received Mail, but ones you've sent to can be done in Mail. Select Window Menu item>Previous Recipients, press Command-A when the new window appears, and then click Add to Address Book, then in Address Book>Card Menu Item, select look for Duplicates.

No options when adding new e-mail address to Address Book

When I receive an e-mail from someone not in my Address Book, it's very easy to add that address. However, during that process, there seems to be no way to directly edit the new address entry, for example to add a last name, or prefix (Dr., etc.), or some other info. I found a mail script that will allow me to choose which Group the new address goes into, but nothing that will allow me to easily edit the information without having to go to Address Book, find the new address, and edit there.
In contrast, when adding a new e-mail address in Entourage, the Address Book entry pops up and allows me to make all necessary additions and changes very easily.
Is there some way to do that easily in Mail?

Thanks for the reply. That doesn't always work for some reason. Your reply came into my .mac address inbox. I right-clicked on the address and sure enough an editable Address Book card popped up. However, in another account mailbox I right-clicked on the address of a recent email sent by a client and when I chose "Add to Address Book", no editable card popped up, though the address was added to my address book.
Also, that client's email address is already in my address book. Since the client is Japanese, his email comes under his name in Japanese, while I have his name in English in the Address book. However, Mail seems to think that it is a new address, as that is the option it gives me when I right-click on the address. In fact, the address is already in the Address book, though filed under a different name.
So, two problems. 1. The editable pop-up window doesn't always appear when right-clicking an address in Mail. 2. Mail doesn't know that an email address is already in my Address book, though it might be filed under a different name.

Mail and Address Book adding second name to contacts!?

Each time I recieve an email from, for example, my father, Mail and Address Book change his name to 'Dad Bramhall'. I specifically change it to 'Dad but whenever I sync. to my iPhone the address book entry changes to Dad Bramhall.
This is so frustrating so please does anyone know how to stop it adding/changing a name? Thanks.

I have tried editing his name on both my Mac and iPhone address book but it just changes to Dad Bramhall again. He has is name listed as Mark Bramhall and how do I change email preferences? Thanks.

Are you saying that my address book has not been hacked into? That others are getting these email addresses from another source?
This confuses me. Are you saying that you are receiving bogus e-mails from some of your contacts, or are you saying that they are receiving bogus e-mails from you?
If the latter, there are a number of reasons that people might be getting e-mail from you. Malware, though technically possible, is extremely unlikely. See Someone is sending messages from my e-mail address!
If the former, that's rather unusual. The only decent explanation I can think of is that a bunch of your Windows-using contacts got infected with something and their machines are being used to spam everyone in their contact lists, which would include you.

Drag and drop from mail to address book not happening

Hi guys, I can no longer drag email addresses from Mail into Address Book. The address just bounces back. I've repaired permissions, installed the latest security update, repaired permissions again, rebooted twice. Any ideas?

Hi mbriscoe, I've since upgraded to Lion and the same downgrade of functionality exists. I can no longer drag and drop an address from Mail into Address Book. I now have to click name, wait for menu, select Add to Address Book, go into Address Book and find the name I just added, then drag the name into the specific group I want it to be in. It used to be very useful, the drag and drop, in an "it just works" kind of way. Now it's not.

Can't import mail/address book from Outlook, old drive, old OS

Recently my wife's G4 died and we bought another. We transferred my wife's the old drive which was running OS9 (I know, she was just hard to convert)and added it to the new G4 as a secondary drive and also as a means of transferring the data. She ws using Outlook in OS 9 and it and the microsoft <user> files reside there (on her old drive). As a result, as good as Mail is in importing from other apps, it won't import from Outlook unless it's running.
To run it, I have to launch Classic but after doing so and starting Outlook, it will now not 'see' the email and address book files...even though at the finder level I can see the 300 megs worth of emails in the Microsoft documents folder....
Argghhhhh! This is business stuff and I'm desparate...can anyone think of a way to get at least the address book imported into Mail, even though I didn't think to output the entire list as a comma file before the old drive died?

This is a very common issue ... so much that a specialized solution exists. I had to deal with it when I converted from the evil PC world. Go to littlemachines.com, look at O2M. It worked very well for me ... but:
The caveat is: it runs on a PC ... intended for one-way-one-time migration out of the evil empire. So, if your Outlook data (.PST file) currently lives on a Mac, you would need to get it on a PC ... and I've never tried that, so I don't know if it works.
