Adding Airport card to 867mhz Ti Powerbook?

Hi,
I have a 867mhz Titanium Powerbook that i need to add an Airport card too, how do do this and what will it (roughly) cost?

Just an added note to eww's info: I checked ebay a couple of months ago, and people were selling supposedly new/sealed cards for over $100, used a little under that.
Make sure you get an ORIGINAL AP card, NOT an Extreme or the newer version. You may also want to consider a PCMCIA wireless card (fits in PC card slot). Most people get better distance, they're cheaper, and you can get the "g" style (54mbps instead of 11). The drawback is that it takes up that slot and sticks out the side 3/4 of an inch or so. Some brands work seamlessly with Apple's built-in AP software.

  • How and if I can update my airport card slot in my Powerbook G4.

I bought a used powerbook G4 a week ago, and it was in good condition, but it did'nt come with an airport card. So I went out and bought the new airport extreme card from london drugs, and read my manual on how to install it. Then I took the laptop apart and tried to fit the airort extreme card into the slot but it wouldnt fit, so then I kept on reading the manual and found out that my laptop is equiped with the original airport card slot for the original airport card that apple has discontinued, and that the airport extreme card does not go in that slot so I was just wondering if I have to buy and install a new slot that fits the airport extreme card? Can some one please help me out thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You cannot use an AirPort Extreme card in your model of Mac. Your options for wireless access are:
    1. Use the original AirPort card.
    2. Purchase a third-party wireless card which will fit in your computer's PCMCIA slot.
    3. Use an Ethernet adaptor such as this one.
    4. Use an USB wireless adapter. This should only be done if you can't use any of the other options.

  • "no airport card installed"  on 17'PowerBook G4 after installing 10.5.1

My Airport card suddenly went away. System profile says 'no information" and finder bar says : no airport card installed" I have tried removing the .kext file in question (AppleAirport.kext) to no avail. Tried zapping the pram, safe mode etc. Apple techs no help. Anybody know the fix? Thanks in advance for the help.
PS, I must mention that I have had numerous other issues with 10.5 and 10.5.1 - I dont think it likes PowerPC's!
    cheers!

Just got the same problem on my 17 inch powerbook again, Previously fixed by repairing permissions and repairing disk with the disk utility. Not this time. Your previous note is several month old- did you resolve the problem?

  • HT1621 Is there a difference between an airport card for a G3 powerbook and a G4 iMac (Dome)

I have a G4 imac (dome) that I am trying to give to my grandchildren. The internet works perfectly well on my BT set up, but they have Virgin (cable) and it will not connect wirelessly. I think the G4 has a G3 Airport card. I am quite prepared to purchase a G4 Airport card as long as I know that it has different values to the G3. Does anyone have any information regarding these cards.

Guy would this be of any help:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. If Apple Hardware Test does not start up, see the Additional Information section at the end of this article.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.  An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
It takes a minute or so for Apple Hardware Test to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen:
When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
The Apple Hardware Test console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

  • +Added Airport Card to G4 867 Quicksilver - Not seein' any wireless signals

    Hi hello there,
I got this G4 running 10.5 for surfin and music - but I can't seem to get the Airport workin on it.
I have a laptop that is currently using the Airport Express... So I know how to set it up. And I know it's sending out the signals
I installed an Airport card - It's in my "About this mac" so I know it's recognized.
I rebooted (held if for long until it beeped {thanks IT guy}) I zapped the p-ram - It's ON. I got a lil Amber icon next to it in the Network controls. And It's in my Shortcut Airport menu - but I don't see nobody - no networks.
    What am I doing wrong?

Download & try MacStumbler @ http://www.macstumbler.com/ to see if it can detect any signal.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Upgrading OSX to 10.4, adding airport card basics...

    Hi All,
Just wanted to make sure I had this right before I hunted down a purchase of 10.4. for my iMac G4 FP. It has 512 of ram.
I can go from my current 10.2.8 on it to 10.4 (skipping 10.3) or even 10.5 although I've read that 10.4 seems to run better on the FPimac? I need only find 10.4 DVD software? I am not sure of all the 10.4 iterations out there like updates versus full package etc..,
I can add a wireless airport card although they are hard to find and about $80.00?
Can anyone suggest a reputable seller for these 2 items?
    Thanks,
    Al

First identify which Flat Panel iMac you have:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301724
If it is pre-1 Ghz, you need the original airport card from one of these vendors:
    http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/wirelesscards/11g_11bcards/airportcard.php
    http://www.a1acomputing.com/usorapaicam7.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/M7600LLE/
If it is 1 Ghz or higher you can buy in the in store Airport Extreme card.
    As for Tiger:

Sometimes you can also call the Apple Store direct and ask for it by asking for their legacy software store.

  • Adding airport card?

I ordered my Mac G5 without an airport card (dumb!) and now have wireless U-verse service, plus just bought a MacBook Pro, a wireless capable all-in-one printer, and have a Mac airport base station. I can use the MacBook with the U-verse router, but of course, can't use the G5 with it. I'd like to add that capability and don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The G5 is compatible with the Apple Airport Extreme card.
If the G5 is a Late 2005 model, then it takes a special card.
All other G5's use this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3024
    Installation is easy:

    Availability:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-M8881LL-AirPort-Extreme-Card/dp/B0000899ZB
PCI adapters are also available, with these being some of the better choices:

  • Old airport card

I have bought an old airport card for my titanium powerbook G4. Where do I put it?

Go to www.apple.com/support/diy/ and select your PowerBook. You will find the directions for installing the card.
You can use KB 88248, PowerBook G4 Computers: How to Identify Different Models to determine exactly which PowerBook you have.

  • Does airport express work without an airport card?

    hello
the airport card on my 12in powerbook is broken so i use a usb wireless adaptor to connect to the internet with a linksys wireless router. however, i would really really like to use my airport express instead so that i can stream music to my speakers but i haven't been able to set it up properly. the wireless adaptor can see the airport express network, but cannot connect to the internet or speakers. the wireless adaptor works fine with the linksys router and in other public places so i'm beginning to wonder if it is incompatible with airport express.
    any suggestions would be appreciated!

This very nearly answers my question as well but let me add my specifics.
I'd like to stream music wirelessly via Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil to audio systems connected to an Airport Express. I have a B/W G3 and a Mini w/o the Airport Card (shortsighted of me) and a wireless router supplied by Verizon for my FIOS. Would a USB wireless device (for both machines) or a PCI wireless card (for the G3) fit the requirements?
If so, do you have any recommendations for manufacturers of Mac-compatible devices?

  • Arrgh! (installed Airport card G4867... not showing up!)

i installed an airport card (salvaged from my powerbook g3) into my desktop G4867. every now and then (more so every time i boot up), the airport card isn't recognized by the computer.
    what gives?
i've repaired disk permissions, reset pram, opened the machine up to make sure the connections are solid, etc.
    "help!"
    -

I'd get them to send you another card.  If it works, great!  If not, then the connection on the computer is bad.  If that's the case, you can get a wireless PCI card or a wireless USB adapter, but the PCI card would be better.  Test it with another Airport card first though.

  • Airport Card Can't Be Removed

    Hello!
I would like to pull the airport card out of my PowerBook G4 laptop.
There are two clear plastic square feet glued right in front of the wireless card which prevent me from pulling out the card. I can't find any card removal instructions that address these two plastic squares. It's like someone snuck these buggers into my computer or something.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Haha, yah, far too many computer gnomes sneaking about around here...
I was afraid I was going to have to get a little medieval on my lappy and pry off those clear plastic squares. I just wanted to be sure first that they weren't there for a good reason or that there was some alternate way I was supposed to remove the airport card. It appears I'm just gunna have to pop the little warty things off and be done with them.

  • Installing an Airport Card

I have never installed anything in a computer by myself. Should I try installing an Airport Card in my G4 Powerbook by following this site's directions or should I take it to get done? Basically, how easy is it to make a serious mistake doing it by myself? I'd like to try if answer to this question is "not very". Thanks.

  • Airport Card no longer recognized by PowerBook

I always take my PowerBook G4 to class with me for the purpose of taking notes during class. I was connected to the internet there, over the wireless network (on campus) with no problem.
When I got back home, my PowerBook wasn't seeing the wireless network (at home, seperate from the wireless network on campus), but I knew it was working because my iMac is connected to it just fine, along with two other computers in my house. I tried restarting a couple of times, and actually typing the name of the network into the Airport drop-down menu. This all did nothing, as did repairing the disk permissions.
I find it very unlikely that the card is not seated correctly, because first of all, when I brought the PowerBook back from campus (when it was working properly) it was tranported in my TUMI bag, which has a dedicated padded holder for PowerBooks, and then immediately took it out and sat it on my desk next to my iMac only to find the PowerBook no longer seeing the wireless signal.
And at this point, I could still turn Airport on and off, and I restarted the computer a couple of times to see if it would pick up the signal, all the while Airport was still recognized by the system (I could still turn it off and on from the drop-down menu, but no wireless networks were present).
So, I popped in my OS X DVD to boot from it to use the Repair Disk feature. It came up with an error that said something to the tune of "incorrect number of threads." It repaired the disk without any probems, or so I thought (and so it thought).
Now, the computer wouldl not function because it runs into a kernal panic, forcing me to hard shut-down the computer. It happened everytime, sometimes during startup, sometimes not until I got into OS X, but always soon after the OS starts.
I then booted the computer as a "Safe boot" and this seemed to stop the kernal panics, and I shut down the computer and started it again with no panics. There was no longer any recognition of the Airport card, either. Not even through the Airport Setup Assistant. It keeps telling me there is no card installed.
I have tried two seperate cards, as I thought maybe the one went bad, but nothing came of this. I tried zapping the PRAM, booting into Open Firmware to reset to defaults, all leading to nothing. I even went so far as to completely erase the drive and do a clean install of OS X, which now drops my system down to 10.4. NOTHING.
Please, anyone willing to help that would be great, even if you would like to contact me through iChat and we can discuss this over iSight to get to the root of the problem. Screen name is CoreyAtMiamiU.
Sorry about the long post and thanks for taking the time to read it.

This is a user to user discussion area. So it is unpredictable as to when someone with a suggestion will respond to your post. An hour in the middle of a work day isn't a long time.
Since the card is recognized, there isn't anything wrong with that side of the card. If the card isn't receiving a signal, either the RF side of the card has failed, the antenna wire isn't connected properly, or the antenna in the PowerBook has failed.

  • How to set up wired PowerBook (dead airport card) to wireless network

The airport card in our PowerBook isn't working and not worth fixing. I wanted to hook it up via Ethernet to Clearwire modem, but it appears there is only one Ethernet port on it which I have to use for my airport express for my iMac to access. There is a USB port on the airport but didn't know if that would do anything. Darn, I'm usually good at this stuff, so please help!

Wow, thanks for that fast reply.
The PowerBook is about 6 years old, apple called it vintage. Although it has airport in it, this happened once before where the antenna or whatever came dislodged. Hubby likes to fall asleep with laptop in... His lap!
I also have a 2008 iMac running off the same airport and was trying to see if I could daisy chain something up. I have a FireWire cable too. I hear you smiling...
So if you can explain what a wireless USB adapter is I'd appreciate it. I thought I could just hook it straight up to my modem or airport express but apparently each have only one Ethernet.
I'm the kind that sits and looks at what I have, so never would have thought about buying more stuff! :)
