  • Adding Airport card to 867mhz Ti Powerbook?

    Hi,
I have a 867mhz Titanium Powerbook that i need to add an Airport card too, how do do this and what will it (roughly) cost?

Just an added note to eww's info: I checked ebay a couple of months ago, and people were selling supposedly new/sealed cards for over $100, used a little under that.
Make sure you get an ORIGINAL AP card, NOT an Extreme or the newer version. You may also want to consider a PCMCIA wireless card (fits in PC card slot). Most people get better distance, they're cheaper, and you can get the "g" style (54mbps instead of 11). The drawback is that it takes up that slot and sticks out the side 3/4 of an inch or so. Some brands work seamlessly with Apple's built-in AP software.

  • +Added Airport Card to G4 867 Quicksilver - Not seein' any wireless signals

    Hi hello there,
I got this G4 running 10.5 for surfin and music - but I can't seem to get the Airport workin on it.
I have a laptop that is currently using the Airport Express... So I know how to set it up. And I know it's sending out the signals
I installed an Airport card - It's in my "About this mac" so I know it's recognized.
I rebooted (held if for long until it beeped {thanks IT guy}) I zapped the p-ram - It's ON. I got a lil Amber icon next to it in the Network controls. And It's in my Shortcut Airport menu - but I don't see nobody - no networks.
    What am I doing wrong?

Download & try MacStumbler @ http://www.macstumbler.com/ to see if it can detect any signal.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Upgrading OSX to 10.4, adding airport card basics...

    Hi All,
Just wanted to make sure I had this right before I hunted down a purchase of 10.4. for my iMac G4 FP. It has 512 of ram.
I can go from my current 10.2.8 on it to 10.4 (skipping 10.3) or even 10.5 although I've read that 10.4 seems to run better on the FPimac? I need only find 10.4 DVD software? I am not sure of all the 10.4 iterations out there like updates versus full package etc..,
I can add a wireless airport card although they are hard to find and about $80.00?
Can anyone suggest a reputable seller for these 2 items?
    Thanks,
    Al

First identify which Flat Panel iMac you have:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301724
If it is pre-1 Ghz, you need the original airport card from one of these vendors:
    http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/wirelesscards/11g_11bcards/airportcard.php
    http://www.a1acomputing.com/usorapaicam7.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/M7600LLE/
If it is 1 Ghz or higher you can buy in the in store Airport Extreme card.
    As for Tiger:

Sometimes you can also call the Apple Store direct and ask for it by asking for their legacy software store.

  • Adding airport card?

I ordered my Mac G5 without an airport card (dumb!) and now have wireless U-verse service, plus just bought a MacBook Pro, a wireless capable all-in-one printer, and have a Mac airport base station. I can use the MacBook with the U-verse router, but of course, can't use the G5 with it. I'd like to add that capability and don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
The G5 is compatible with the Apple Airport Extreme card.
If the G5 is a Late 2005 model, then it takes a special card.
All other G5's use this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3024
    Installation is easy:

    Availability:

PCI adapters are also available, with these being some of the better choices:

  • I have a Mac Pro 4,1 quad core intel Xeon running mac OSX 10.6.8 and I have just moved studios and now need to use the Internet wirelessly but there's no airport facilities on this model can anyone tell me what model of airport card I would need for this

Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.

  • Adding a Lucent airport card...but need a slightly longer cable to make it

Not wishing to pay the premium prices now being fetched for the original airport card i bought Lucent Gold card from EBAY. It is installed in the computer now and without having to add any drivers my imac say it and added it at startup and now airport shows up in my network ports and is turned on. The only thing holding me back is that the card ias about an inch longer than the airport card making a connection to the internal antenna impossible. I need about another inch or two. I think I culd crack open the imac and find that there is plenty of slack...but I would rather NOT do that just yet. Does anyone know if there isa pigtail available to extend the imac internal wireless cable?
    Thanks!!

    Hey tm311,
That's interesting that it works without an antenna.
A common problem with the Airport card is not fully
seating the antenna. I'm impressed that you had
another antenna just laying around the house!
    Clint
I did not have one laying around...in fact this whole wireless thing is kind of new to me. I ordered this one online and it is coming today. I let you know if it improves the reception enough to make it worthwhile to install

Is there any reason it wouldn't work?
    Thanks!

No, you cannot install an Airport Extreme card into a G3 iBook. You need an original Airport card, no longer sold by Apple or its dealers. Most online retailers still selling this card are asking over $150 for one of these cards, so your best source these days is EBay.

  • Just added an airport card 8 years later.

I bought a used airport card for my Graphite G4 since I am no longer living in an apartment and truly needed a wireless network. I use Airport Express as my wireless source and my laptop (17" Macbook 4-5 years old) and iphone both connect with no problem. Now that I am trying to connect the G4 I can not. The card is recognized but the light on screen is yellow and the message is that it can not connect. I click on the radar icon and my network will not show up and when I try to type in the name it does not find it. Do I need to reset something in the airport express or is my problem with the G4?

    Check the following:
    * the software version of the Airport card in the G4;
    * the type of encryption you're using on the Airport Express;
    * the type of network you set up on Airport Express.
The old Airport card only connects at 11Mbps (802.11b). If the network was not set to be compatible with 802.11b (i.e. the "Radio Mode" is set to 802.11g only in the AirPort Utility), the Airport card in the G4 won't be able to connect. And as already mentioned, if you're using WPA you need to make sure the Airport software on the G4 is up to date because older versions didn't support WPA encryption.

  • Which Airport card for a Power Mac G5 Quad Core?

i think it's a late 2005 model (11,2). having difficulty finding the right airport card to connect to my wireless broadband network at home. bought a wireless USB adapter but this won't work. any ideas would be hugely appreciated! thanks.

how easy are these things to install?
No so much easy, or hard, just delicate.
These instructions are originally in German, but with translation, you should be able to install it:

  • What is needed to network 2 computers using Airport card

I know I need an airport card in my eMac, but is there any other cards that have to be in the computer? I want to network my eMac with an iMac using a DSL line. The eMac will be downstairs and the iMac will be upstairs. I'm waiting for delivery from Apple of the iMac. It has everything built in that is needed to network but my eMac doesn't. To make my eMac wireless is all I have to buy is an Airport Card and a Wireless Gateway for the iMac which is the computer connected to the DSL modem and Wireless USB adapter with connects to the eMac? What type of Airport Card do I need to buy for my eMac (model #'s etc.) It is the card that inserts above the super drive in the front of the computer. Is there any software that is needed to install Airport?

I am also doing some configuration changes (we have one Imac and two eMac's)
but one eMac does not have a airport card and is hardwired (ethernet) to the high speed cable modem then a apple airport. One Imac and the Emac with a airport card work fine, it is a bit tricky finding the correct airport card (or airport extreme card if you have a ATI graphics card (use about the mac/system profiler then click on more to see if you have a graphics card (which affects which airport card you need, there are alot of resellers on the net so you should find what you want.
If in doubt there is a free program mactracker which provides data on every mac made (available off off versiontracker.com (free site just register) it will guide
you on the type of card needed. I was quite amazed at the amount of different spec eMac's made in their relativealy short history.
Macwireless.com does sell eMac cards (for two models) but also antenna type
or flash drive appearing USB based wireless connectors that may help.
I found the mactracker program helpful (alot) as alot of web sites provide some vague info and I would hate to se you get stuck with a non returnable card.
The actual card install does not look hard (its done through the cd rom drive door.
I am not sure why we did not get a airport card for ours when we bought it.
Wish I did as it would have saved some $ (maybe) and surf time making sure I find the right one.
We did have a antenna wireless antenna for a "green" Imac (long gone) and it ran on OS9 but it was finicky when we had the airport base station upstairs
and the Imac and antenna in the basement (about 50-75 feet)
    Best of luck
Hope this helps, I am not a expert, the serial number on the cd drawer will
nail down the model you have and what you need.
We have been working adding a laser printer and airport express and the two macs with cards work fine but the Emac with no card can not be set up yet. The laser printer will sure save on ink!

  • Airport card works in 10.1, HW test passes, but not detected at all in 10.4

Ok, Hi. I'll first admit this is my first post so go easy on me!
I just bought a used iBook G3 and it was working fine for a while until about a month ago when all kinds of weird things stared happening. Some of which those problems I solved from reading previous topics from these forums - but anyways, I'll skip all my other problems and get right to my current one.
First off here is the complete specs:
12.1" iBook G3 "dual USB series"
    500MHz PPC processor
    128+256MB ram = 384MB RAM
15GB hard drive (NOW 160GB HARD DRIVE!)
No Airport Card (NOW ONE HAS BEEN ADDED!)
Multiple OS's - OS9 and 10.1 were included (have original disks)
I also have a set of 10.4 Tiger CD-ROM disks
Anyways, here is basically what is happening. I bought an Airport card off eBay for my iBook. I installed it about a week ago. I booted into 10.4 Tiger and it did not detect the card. Tried to do the manual setup with the wizard and it said there was no card attached. I went into the system profiler and is said No info available under the airport section. I then booted to my "apple hardware test disk" and ran the full/extended test. It passed everything (including the Airport card) so I know that is not the problem. I then booted into OS X 10.1 and lone behold the card is detected and is working without any fooling around with! Instant wireless internet! So I know that the card is working, but I want to use it in Tiger as 10.1 is almost worthless. So I boot into Tiger again knowing that the card is working, and Tiger still does not recognize it! I even booted into OS 9 and it detected the card (although it was having some connection problems, but at least I know that it IS detecting it.)
Here is what I tried (so you can cross these suggestions off your list! lol)
I've deleted the Airport "ktext" files, etc. (can't remember the actual names of the files, but I've cleared all of those caches and still no luck.)
    I've zapped PRAM
    I rest NVRAM
    I rest the PMU.
I did a Arcive and install of 10.4
...All of which did not help. Again, the card worked in 10.1, but 10.4 is completely blind and can't find it!
Now we are caught up to today. I was having many other odd problems and it all lead to my hard drive probably being bad. So toady I finally bit the bullet and bought a new hard drive from Best Buy. It took me forever to install it, but I did it, and it works! Now I have 160GB (make that only 128GB detected) of space. I partitioned it 4 ways as well:
    "Tiger" - 80GB
    "Other OS" - 30GB
    "Extra Space 1" - 10GB
    "Extra Space 2" - 8GB
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx- 128GB Total
So now that I have a new hard drive (that I was told would fix all of my problems because my old one was "bad" I thought I would have it working today, but no. So I put in the brand new drive, partitioned it, booted off my Tiger disk, installed it on the 80GB partition. The install went fine. So I now have 10.4 on the new drive. Seems to be a lot faster then my old drive! I did the combo updater (which I downloaded on my iMac and transfered to a flash drive and loaded on to my iBook) Ran the updater, and now it is running 10.4.11! But then I realized, the Airport card is STILL not detected in Tiger!!! - I thought the new hard drive would solve all my problems as I was staring from scratch, but no, there is still a problem!
I ran the Apple hardware test disk again, full test, and it said my Airport card is still fine. I didn't reinstall 10.1 yet (nor did I want to, I was hoping Tiger would work for what I wanted) but it seems now that I might have to go back and install 10.1 again. I don't know what it will prove - other then it will work again, but I don't want to use 10.1 so I'm not going to bother doing all that again.
Anyways, after looking into this further, I brought up the system boot log (of tiger) and found these lines interesting, and hopefully useful to you guys:
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
    localhost DirectoryService[64]: Lunched version 1.8 (v346)
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
it then lists the eithernet address and then ramblers on about other nonsense. If anyone needs the other "stuff" i'll try and save the whole log file and attach it here if anyone needs it.
So could anyone please help? It seems as if i've done everything, and still can not get an answer on why it is doing this, and how to fix it!
    Please Help!
Thanks you so much, and sorry for the long yet detailed message!!!
    -Scott

Hey, just wanted to post an update to let everyone know what I ended up doing.
Bottom line with the airport card I had is that is was "bad" - well only kind of. I got an email from a guy from a local PC repair shop. He told me he had just gotten one of those cards in and had it for sale for only $25. So I was chatting with this guy and he said it would be alright if I brought my iBook right in his shop, swap the cards and try it before I buy it. So I did so. Very nice guy and we swapped out the cards no problem. Right away it recognized his card and worked! I then downloaded the Airport update and ran it. (remember before, when I tried to update my card, after it restarted it was no longer recognized.) So we did the update with HIS card in and after it restarted, it STILL worked! It also added WPA support as well! We then booted into to Tiger (remember the old card wasn't recognized at all in tiger) and it ALSO worked in Tiger! I also had WPA support right away! So I bought the card and was all happy that it was all working again! I then figured out what the problem was with the old one.
My original card was one of the "original" originals. Then, Apple "changed" the original cards and replaced ones with "128bit" support. (this is all before the extreme cards) I then found out that the newer original cards (the one the guy just sold me) are worth MORE because these are the cards that are compatible with the newer update (128bit WEP, and WPA) The cards looked exactly the same, but the newer card has "128 Bit" printed on the bottom of the card.
SO, it ended up, I was "asking too much" out of the card I had - as the card I had did not support what I was trying for it to do. Where as the newer card I bought IS compatible with the update, and worked like a piece of cake. So all in all, the first card I had isn't "dead" it just wasn't working with what I wanted it to. So I'm going to end up selling it. Hopefully craigslist, but I will get more for it on eBay. so that is what I'm going to do. I'll just make sure to tell people this "story" so they don't try and do the same thing I did. But for someone with an even older laptop, an older OS, or an older router, this card will work just fine for them.
So thats basically it! Looks like I got everything working!

  • No internet access in public unsecured WLAN environment with Airport card

    Dear community
I do face the following problem:
I am not able to open any internet pages in a particular unsecured public WLAN Hot Spot, although my iBook (over an Airport Card) has been successfully assigned a TCP / IP address. Other public Hot Spots work fine, but not this one.
With my Windows Pocket PC there exists no problem. After starting my browser, I immediately get redirected to the login screen.
This does not work with my iBook. There is no automatic redirect. Then I tried to directly address the router TCP / IP address. This worked and the login screen appeared. But then, after clicking the login button, an error appeared: "Can't read cookie" - but cookies are enabled (no success with Safari, Firefox and Opera).
    The router is a D-Link.
Another guest with an iBook had no problems, we compared setups - the only difference which we found was, that he was using a new Airport Extreme card, I do only have an old Airport card.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you very much

D-Link Wireless Access point. PC works great..Mac is SLOW on internet.
Posted: Apr 5, 2006 8:16 PM Reply Email
This has really got me frustrated. I own a hotel and am working to get it set up with a wireless internet connection. I've got a qwest dsl modem going into a D-Link router, and then today added another D-Link access point (actually, the computer tech added the new access point). I needed this additional access point because there were too many dead spots in the hotel with only one D-link.
The new D-link seems to be working perfectly, for PC users that is. People using a PC laptop can connect to the wireless network and browse the internet at fast speeds. However with my G4 1.33gh Powerbook with Airport Extreme is having problems. I get a very strong airport signal, but internet browsing is crawling along. Some pages work for minutes to load, and some won't load at all.
The settings for the wireless connection is the same on my mac as they are on the PC. Is there something else I need to change?
    Thanks for any help,

  • How do I get to the airport card in a Nehalem?

I'm thinking my airport card may not be connected correct or something but I cant figure out where it is to check. I have the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" I can't find any videos or images of this model mac. When i go to about this mac the card shows up under airport but Airport Utility doesn't show up anything just says rescan.

    drdre74 wrote:
    I don't have a Airport base.
In that case AirPort Utility won't show you anything useful.
I have a Linksys WRT160N. As of right now my airport card wont even find it. My iphone and psp and ps3 connect to the router network just fine.
Two things that I can think of that might explain what you see: (1) The AirPort card is bad. (2) It's not connected correctly to its antenna(s). (I've seen stories about such problems.) I wonder if Apple Hardware Test could help you eliminate the first possibility.

  • Connection Problems G5 Internal Airport Card

    Hello,
I just bought a Quad G5 and seperately an Airport Extreme Card to go inside so that I can connect wirelessly to the internet.
The card is being recognized by the computer, but I'm getting no signals... and usually with my laptop I'll get not only my wi-fi, but four or five nearby ones.
So, I think there's more work to do but I'm not sure what. I tried combing these forums and some things seemed like they might be the answer but I wasn't sure when I looked into the belly of my computer.
I'm guessing I need to connect this antenna I hear so much about? But I'm not sure how. I see two thin wires with metal tips that look like about the same size as a hole on the end of the Airport Card, but I'm afraid to guess at it first not knowing if that's even the right thing to do, and then secondly, not knowing which of the two to try.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rolyn

I found out the Airport Extreme card doesn't work on this version of G5... needed a Airport/Bluetooth combined card....
No thanks to Apple in figuring that out, in fact, when I bought my computer, the Airport Extreme card came up as a recommended additional purchase. WHY??? To waste four hours of my day today? Not only that but it took a guy at Apple Care an hour to figure that out. Yikes.
