Adding Airport Express to an existing Windows WEP enabled wireless network

I have can't find anything to help me add my new Airport Express to my existing WEP network. All I want is to use to play my Itunes through the sitting room stereo. I've upgraded the firmware on my Netgear 802.11b wireless access point so I can have a 13 digit WEP password. I've installed the latest install software from the apple website for the express box.
I can access the express box fine on its own but not add it to the existing network. Now the only thing that works is the apple connection! My old wireless network has stopped working. I tried the same at my office yesterday and the only way to resolve the situation was to uninstall all the Apple software and then my Wireless network was able to work again. I'm pulling my hair out here and getting in to trouble with the rest of the family because it is taking so much time up!
Someone mentioned somewhere some new firmware - I can only find one for MAcs not PCs - I don't have any Macs on my network.
Please help.
THANKS

Make sure you have installed at least Airport 4.1 on your PC:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41forwindows.html
Most Netgear wireless routes will tell you the hex equivalent of the plain text WEP password you enter into it - and this is found using the same web browser based process you use to configure the router. This information cannot be found by any other means (like "pinging" the router's IP address). If you can get the WEP key in this manner, configure the Airport Express with the same WEP key *while it is still cabled to the router*.
The alternative is to come up with a 26-digit hex format WEP key of your own choosing. You can then wirelessly access the Airport Express and enter that WEP key on it first, followed by doing the same on the router second.

The Airport Express (AE) is setup to join my wireless network using Airport Utility.  A printer is connected to the AE with a USB cable.  After the setup the AE light is green and the printer can be accessed over the wireless network.
The problem starts if the router is cycled off/on.  Now the AE will not rejoin the wireless network and there is a non-flashing amber light.  If the power to the AE is cycled off/on the AE reconnects to the wireless network.
This is about as handy as a screen door on a submarine.
Is it possible to see the setting of the AE the same way the modem and router settings can be accessed?   Can this issue be fixed?

If they send you a replacement printer it will have ink tanks with it.  You can store the ink tanks from your current printer and use them later on you "new" printer if you wish.  Store them nozzle-up so they do not leak.

  • Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port?

Can I use my Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port? - I'm wanting to connect a computer that does not have wireless and is in another building.

The requirements for this to work are:
    1) The AirPort Express must be the 802.11"n" version. Model Number is A1264
    2) There must be adequate wireless signal stength where the Express will be located
    3) The Express must be configured to "join" the wireless network with the option checked to activate the Ethernet port

  • Adding Airport Express to my existing network

I'm sure this has been covered, but I've been wading through the various posts on AXpress and I have just become more and more confused with the different scenarios that people are presenting....so here's what I want to do.....
I currently have a G5 connected to a Belkin wireless router that also has 4 ethernet ports. The G5 is connected to it via ethernet. My Netcomm ADSL modem connects to the Belkin router and I have a Macbook connected wirelessly. I also have a Belkin Wireless Range Extender that picks up the wireless signal from the main Belkin router and repeats it so that I have great wireless signal no matter where I am in my house. All of this works flawlessly, and has done so for the last 2 years.
Now I want to add the AXpress that I have just purchased purely for the Airtunes feature. Can I just add it in to the existing network without changing what is already working perfectly? I would imagine that I should be able to use either my G5 or my MacBook to stream iTunes music to the AExpress?
Could someone either tell me how to, or point me in the direction of a post that deals specifically with this type of set-up?...I would be most appreciative, as I said, I was just becoming more confused as I read the existing posts.
    Thanks in advance.

I am in the same position that you are, except that I have already been using the Airport Express for itunes for nearly a year now and it works great. I called Apple to get it working and it worked fabulously in my old apartment. However, I want to use it with my new wireless set-up, which works great in my new apartment. I just want them to work together....
I have a linsky wireless WRTP54G for my RCA broadband router that came with my DSL. When I use the airport utility to scan for this "base station" as the instructions for creating a WDS say to, I can't find it. Actually, the computer can't find it and I get an error. I am pretty sure that I have the right IP address and that the password is correct, because I just reset it through linksys. I think if I could just get past this step that I could continue on.
    Does anyone have any advice?

  • How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • Connecting an 802.11n Express to an older WEP-enabled WDS network

I have a domed 802.11g Extreme base station connected to an older (802.11g) Express in a 128-bit WEP enabled WDS network - works great.
I recently purchased a new 802.11n Express and would like to add it as another remote in my WDS. The new Airport Setup Utility will not allow me to set up the new Express as a remote in a WDS network with 128-bit WEP. The closest I can get is WEP Transitional Security Network. When setting it up this way, it demanded a 13-character password -- which I dutifully supplied AFTER changing the password on my domed Extreme to the same thing. After all this effort - the new Express won't get past the blinking yellow light thus requiring me to reset it using the manual reset button.
I can get this same unit to "join" my existing network just fine. In that case, it accepts 128-bit WEP without a whimper.
Is there a basic compatibility problem here? Can I get the new unit to connect to the old 128-bit WEP network by using Transitional Security Network? Do I need to update the whole network to WPA? Or is there some other issue here that has nothing to do with the security issue?
    Thanks for any help.

Hello Tim Hopmann. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You should be able to access the "earlier" WEP modes by first changing the radio mode on the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to one of the non-"n" modes. To do so, just be sure to hold down the <Option> key before making the radio mode selection in the AirPort Utility. Once you choose one of these non-"n" modes, the WEP 40 & 128-bit options become available.

  • Using Airport Express to bring up the speed of wireless to n with a/b/g devices

I have an old computer my wife will not give up for whatever reason.   It's slowing the entire household network down with it's a/b/g card.  I turned off her wifi and used a cat 5e cable to connect to the Airport Express set to extend a signal.  I've found my wireless works MUCH faster.  I hope this helps you!

Yes, I kind of thought that but didn't know why.
Could you explain 'cause I'm trying very hard to
    understand Networks.
An Airport Express can be configured to extend a wireless network wirelessly using WDS (wireless distribution system) which effectively receives the signal from a main base station and broadcasts it again.
You can only use an Airport Express in this way with a main base station which supports Apple's implementation of WDS.
    You can do this with
    - another Airport Express
    - an Airport Extreme Base Station
    - a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    - a Belkin Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    - one specific model from SMC (can't find model number right now)
    - one specific model from Buffalo
For wireless routers not on this short list - not possible.
In particular, it will not work with any WiFi routers from D-Link or Netgear.
    Also, can you suggest an
    alternative?
    You have two options.
Purchase an Apple main base station (and sell the D-Link)
Connect the Airport Express to the D-Link by cable and extend the network in that way (known as a roaming network).

  • Airport express a bit sketchy when streaming songs wirelessly

    Hi all,
I just bought amn airport express and it's connected to my wireless network. The sole purpose of this airport express is to play songs on my stereo from my macbook (WIRELESSLY. My main wireless router is a linksys (g-router). The airport express connects to the network effortlessly ,however, the music comes out very funny on my stereo. It seems to skip a lot and a lot of the singing seems to be echoey and in the background of the actual music. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) ... and possibly why you are experiencing poor audio performance with it.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Adding Airport Express to Existing Airport Extreme Network

I have a wireless network created by an Airport Extreme which works well but with a disppointingly small range so I bought an Airport Express with the intention of extending the original network by using the Express as a repeater (which the chap in Regent Street store told me it could do).
However when I try to join the Express to the existing Extreme network, the Airport Express does not even recognise my Airport Extreme network - do I need to connect the two via ethernet cable for this to work and, if so, what is the point of being wireless?

    Ok, thanks for clarifying.
Let's double-check your extended network configuration.
o Temporarily connect both the MacBook and the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) directly to an available LAN (opposing-arrows) port of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) for the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the AEBSn.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the AXn, and choose Manual Setup.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network (the one created by the AEBSn) you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Instructions to add an airport express to your existing network

Adding your airport express to your existing wireless (none apple) network seems a hard thing to do since the instruction manual doesn’t tell the simple steps to be taken. Changing the network settings once configured causes the same trouble. Many of you will have got the famous 10057 error trying to…
It took me a while to figure out the solution but I found it and here it is….
Start with setting your airport to default factory. This is an important step, so don’t skip it.
    1. First of all. Connect your airport express directly to the router of your own wireless network by a normal network cable. Now start your PC and make sure the Airport express utility program is installed (can be found on the installation cd or at the apple website).
    2. Now do a HARD reset of the airport express into factory settings. This will erase every setting you’ve entered and starts with a clean “new” machine.
    a. Push the reset button and keep it pushed. (button is located on the bottom and can be pushed by a paperclip or so)
    b. Now connect your airport to the power outlet so it starts up. Still keep the reset button pushed.
    c. After a few seconds the status led will start flashing orange (amber). Now release the reset button and let the airport completely start up for about 1 minute until it slowly flashes orange (amber). Your factory settings haven been restored and the password is reset to ‘ public ’
Once your airport has started and flashes amber, proceed with the following steps:
    3. Start on your pc the airport express utility program. If necessary, hit the “look for devices” button.
    4. Your aiport express is shown on the left. Select it by single click and note down the IP address as shown in on the right side in your airport utility program
    5. Under the menu “File”, choose “configure other base station” Don’t bother the strange description, just choose this option. Now enter the IP address of your airport and the password “public” (has been reset to this remember). Hit the OK button.
    6. Now the miracle happens. Your airport is suddenly found and shown. A new screen opens with all settings of your airport express and you can change them.
    a. By default the icon Airport is selected.
    - The first tab is called overview and is not relevant.
    - Go to the second tab, called base station.
--> Give your airport express a name and add a password
--> Note: you might want to open the Options Button and unselect the “look for new firmware option”. If you unselect it, you will keep the airport from constantly downloading new firmware forcing you to reboot it almost every week.
    - Now go to the tab wireless
--> Select in the dropdown “wireless mode” the option “connect with wireless network". Doing so, you instruct the airport not to create a network but to join an existing one (in this case your own network)
--> Select your own network in the dropdown under “name Wireless network"
--> Select the security mode (in most cases WPA/2) and enter your network security password. This is the password you have been creating on your network configuration.
    b. Now click the Music Icon
--> Select the option “activate Airtunes”
--> Enter a name you want to be shown in Itunes for this airport.
    c. If you want, you can set up your printer on by clicking on the printers icon and fill out the settings.
    d. Now finally hit the button “Update” at the bottom.
    7. A dialog is shown to warn you. Of course you want to proceed, so hit the “next” button.
    8. Now your changes are sent to the airport device.
    LET FOLLOWING STEPS FINISH COMPLETELY:
First it writes to the device (a dialog screen is shown telling you that).
Secondly your device is restarted (again a dialog is shown).
Third step is to try to read the airport express again. A dialog is shown.
Let it finish and at the end you will get a “error” message telling you it can’t read the airport you just configured. Don’t worry about that. Just close this message.
    9. Close the Airport Utility program on your pc
    10. Disconnect your airport from power and network.
    11. Reboot your airport now anywhere you want in your home and let it start up for about 1 minute until the green led becomes solid.
    Yes, it will work.

    Carlos,
This is an excellent tutorial.  For some Windows users, however, who have not made changes to their network settings and yet still encounter the dreaded 10057 error code, my post below might resolve:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3289924
My problem was my Windows PC's TCP/IP settings/configuration, which had become corrupt.  I could use Airport Utility without incident on my Macs, but not via my Windows machine.  Refreshing the TCP/IP settings via the instructions above resolved the issue.

Hi skyelaird and welcome to the Discussions
Is there any way I can add an Airport Express into an
    existing Linksys wireless (802.11g) network?.
    Yes.
You would need to configure the Airport Express to join an existing wireless network (client mode).
In this mode you can share a USB printer and stream AirTunes, however the ethernet port would be inactive.

  • How do you add an Airport Express to an existing Airport Express network

I assume that you are interested in using the new Express to extend the wireless range of the other.
If so, please check out the following Apple Support article.

  • Can't get Airport Express to work with Windows

I got a used Airport Express to use as a wireless print server. I got only the Airport Express; no manuals or CD's or anything. I have been reading through the manuals and everything online, but I can't get anything to work. It seems like I need to get the Airport Express Assistant, but I can't find it. I got the Airport Admin Utility, and that installed fine on Windows Vista. Then I installed what I thought was the Express Assistant, and it just seemed to change the Airport software in the start menu, but I still don't have the Assistant, only the Admin Utility. Anyway, I open the Admin Utility and it opens the Base Station Chooser. There is nothing there, so I rescan, and it seems to do nothing. It doesn't find anything anyway.
Where do I go from here? I am kind of stuck. I am trying this on a Windows Vista PC which is hardwired to a Linksys WRTSL54GS router. I have the airport express plugged in and the light is flashing Amber. I have a HP psc2410 plugged into the airport express that I would like to print wirelessly to.
    Thanks for any help.

You don't necessarily need the AirPort Setup
Assistant, you should be able to set up the AirPort
Express Base Station (AX) with the AirPort Admin
Utility...as it is a much more powerful tool. You
need to make sure that you are using the version for Windows. At this
time, the AirPort software is only supported for
Windows 2000 or XP. A Vista-version has not been
    released.
    I suggest the following...
    - First, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX to get
it back to it's original "out-of-the-box" state.
    - Next, temporarily connect your computer directly,
using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port on the
AX during the set up phase.
    - Then set up the AX as a "wireless client."
I have this same problem. I have a Vista Windows notebook and I am trying to get airport working to play music wirelessly through my home stereo. The "base station chooser" software does nothing on my Vista notebook.
I used a friend's MacBook and was able to set up the airport as a client so I can see it listed in my Dlink router DHCP Client Table. The airport express box is plugged in, has a steady green light and everything looks good except there is no option to choose "computer" or "home stereo" speakers in my iTunes. i installed the airport express CD including the itunes it came with.
Any ideas how to get this working on vista? Previously i had the newer version of iTunes 7.1 installed and the airport express CD told me it couldn't complete the install because a newer version of iTunes was installed. I uninstalled the iTunes and reinstalled the CD including the iTunes version 4.

  • Airport express connect to existing network problems

Hello everyone, my thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I know this issue has been raised in various forms both on this forum and elsewhere on the net, however no solution so far has worked for me.
I have been trying to add my airport express to my existing wireless network in order to extend wireless connectivity in my lounge room and provide airplay functionality to my stereo. Previously, with my last router and ISP i had the same setup working fine but now i cannot for the life of me get it working again.
I have BT infinty internet and am using a TPLink WR1043ND router in place of the home hub that BT supplies. My wireless internet connection is fully functionning and everything service-wise is fine.
I have tried to connect my airport express (n) to my network and all seems to go well but despite everything i try i always end up with an express with solid green light that is not recognised wirelessly by airport utility 6.0  or as an output option in itunes. If i connect the express to my MBP via ethernet i can access the express to configure manually but modifying the settings have thus far had no effect. The express is listed in the device list of the router menu and in the express settings has the correct ip issued via dhcp from router, as well as subnet mask and router address. Primary and secondary DNS have been copied from my router settings. Network mode is set to join existing network, correct wpa/wpa2 key is input, and airplay is enabled.
Despite all this seemingly being correct, when i disconnect ethernet connection betwein express and mbp - airport looses the express from ethernet connected devices (obvs) but when i select wifi connected devices it states no configured base stations can be found. The express remains listed in the dhcp client list of the router though and the express green light is there!
I have tried factory reset of the express a number of times and gone through the setup process and receive the same result. I have reset the modem, router, express and powered down the mac a number of times, still to be faced with same result.
I am at a loss and hope that you can help

    Okay so i've fixed it....
Decided to bite the bullet and engage Apple support and although the agent i spoke to tried very hard he was as baffled as i was. In the end (after nearly an hour) i was put on to a support manager who simply told me that the Airport Express joining non-apple router hardware is just not supported. A very very disapointing cop out of an answer and a bit of a let down from Apple. So i expressed (no pun intended) my disatisfaction and left the conversation.
Determined not to be beaten i had one final go and lo and behold got it running. Problem was with the firmware on my router! After i updated to the very latest there now seems no problem with the Express.
It was an elementary mistake, i was trying so hard to fix the problem i forgot to check the basics!!!
Hope this helps anyone else who may be having the same difficulty

  • Trouble joining an Airport Express to an existing Time Capsule network

I have been trying to add an Airport Express to my existing network. Apples to Apples, right? Easy!
    Nope!!!
I have a 1TB Time Capsule connected to a cable modem. As well as wireless, I also have an 8-port gigabit switch connected to the Time Capsule to extend the network to a series of wired clients around the house. My intention was for the Airport Express to provide better wireless reception upstairs and to stream music from iTunes to my home stereo system.
I have tried connecting the Airport Express to the Time Capsule directly using Cat5 as well as to the switch (which shouldn't make any difference...) I have tried configuring it to extend the existing network manually as well as through the Airport Utility wizard.
All seems okay at first but, for some reason, it seems to kick the Time Capsule off the network (it isn't listed in Airport Utility,)and then I can't connect to the internet nor can Time Machine see the disk in the TC for backups!!
The Airport Express does not even show up in iTunes.
I hard reset the Airport Express and try again, and same thing...
What am I doing wrong and how do I repair this?
Thanks for any help on this issue.

I haven't heard it called that, but you could say that was true.
If you are configuring the Express manually, open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base station tab below the icons to assign a name for your device, password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab to enter the wireless settings.
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your main wireless network
Radio Mode = Your choice depending on what you need. A good general choice would be 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) as this will allow all devices to connect
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your main wireless network
Password = Same password as your main wireless network
    Confirm password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.
This is the way commercial wireless networks are designed, except on a much larger scale. This provides the maximum bandwidth on the wireless network and best performance.
This is sometimes called a "roaming network" because computers will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the best signal, which will usually be the closest device.
