Adding AirPort Extreme for a separated network?

Hi,
I'm trying to get a network setup in a small office, but the details have me swimming in the deep end with various issues (DCHP, subnet masks, etc.).
Objective:
Configure two separate networks that don't see each other and both provide WiFi, but share the same internet connection.
Setup:
Phone Line>
BEC (5200?) DSL Modem/Wifi Router (w/ 4 Cat5 ports)>
AirPort Extreme (7.7.3)
Dream:
Connect to the printer from both networks. The printer is currently hard-wired into one of the BEC ports.
Many thanks for any help (or clarifying questions).
Z

OK, thanks.  The AirPort routers use the 10.0.1.x range, so there will not be any chance of an IP address conflict between the two routers on your network.
Open up AirPort Utility again, click on Edit in the smaller window that appears, then click the Network tab at the too of the window
Change the setting for Router Mode from "Off" (Bridge Mode) to DHCP and NAT
You may see a message about Setup over the WAN port on the AirPort, just click to ignore that, then click Update at the lower right of the window and give the AirPort a full minute to restart.
The following step is optional, but recommended if you can do it
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord and also power down the BEC modem/router
Wait a minute, then start the BEC modem/router and let it run a minute or two
Then, start the AirPort and let it run a minute
At this point, the AirPort will display a slow, blinking amber light.
Go ahead and test a few devices to make sure that they can now connect to the AirPort wireless and get a good Internet connection. Also check to see that they cannot "see" any of the devices on your 192.168 network and vice versa.
Post back on your progress, please.

  • Adding Airport Extreme (n) to existing network

Hi, I hope someone can help!
I bought an Airport Extreme (802.11n) hoping that I could connect it into my existing wireless network and use it to provide (wireless) access to a 400Gb USB disk and a Canon Printer.
I have experimented with it a little to establish that the disk and the printer would play ball. They both work via the Extreme ONLY when I access the base station directly, ie in a different network. Problem is I want to be able to use things like iTunes from the internet on a different network and use the 400Gb disk for the downloads! (Phew that's the scene set)
My existing wireless setup is: Linksys WAG300n wireless adsl router which allows access to the internet for my macbook pro and my son's and daughter's winxp machines.
To date I have tried setting the network up using the linksys as the dhcp server (as it usually is) and then with the Airport Extreme as the DHCP server (with the linksys dhcp server off). I am now ABSOLUTELY out of ideas.
Is what I want to do impossible or not? All I want to do is have the Airport Extreme sit within my wireless network providing access to disk and printer. I actually don't want it to act as a base station at all (right ??). Can I get the extreme to act as just an access portal to another piece of equipment?
btw the linksys WAG300n is not WDS capable so I can set up a "backbone" which I guess would be the ideal way to go.
btw (again) I have looked through this forum and haven't seen anything that immediately looks like the answer to me, so I apologise for my dumb question if it has been answered before.
Hope someone can shed some light on the problem!

ADGlassby, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but that is ONLY possible if the main base station supports WDS.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Will adding AirPort Extreme to my fios router improve my speed and distance to led tv.. The tv keeps dropping network and 50% of the time it tells me my broadband is too slow. I have upgraded to fios faster internet speed.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my Fios router improve reception on tv located about 50 feet away..have new top of the line samsung smart tv and it drops signal every other day. When trying to watch netflix or amazon it transmits in SD only says bandwidth is not high enough for Hd. My ipad laptops and iphone work fine in this room. Any help will be appreciated or am I better off with a booster.

The AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly "boost" or "repeat" the wireless signal from the Fios router, since It will only work with another Apple router for that feature.
So, if you plan to extend or repeat the FIos wireless signal, you should use a product by the same manufacturer as the Fios router....or possibly a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear.
Make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy any kind of extender or repeater.....since you cannot know if the product will help until you try it out in your home.
The TV really needs a wired Ethernet connection from the Fios router if at all possible.

  • I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and a Netgear VPN Switch for wired connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect?

I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and also have a Netgear VPN Switch (FV5318) for internal wired ethernet connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect to each other?

Tesserax, I would like to keep the Airport Extreme in nplace before the Netgear FVS318 switch because I am using all of the 8 ethernet outputs distributed to 8 differerent locationsl  This way I can just use one of the LAN outputs from the Airport to feed the FVS318.  Here is what I think I am hearing you say:
Tne reason why the wired and wireless devices are not communicating is because the FVS318G is also a DHCP server and in conflict with the AEBS.
To remedy the situastion here is probably what I need to do in order:
    1. Change the LAN IP Address of the Netgear FVS318G to be the same subnet of the Airport Extreme.
    2. Then, disable the Netgear FVS318G as a DHCP server.
    3. Make sure the ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Airport Extreme connectis to the LAN port of the Netgear FVS318G.
    4. Restart everything.
Can you provide me the steps I need to take to get the right IP addresses from the Airport Extreme to put into the Netgear to fix the conflict?  I have the Airport Utility.  I also have two airport express hot spots, and two Apple TVs in addition to computers attached to the 8 ethernet lines.
    Thank you.

  • Windows XP laptop can't connect to Airport Extreme used to extend network.

Have a time capsule for main wireless. PC works fine connecting to it. Have added Airport Extreme to extend network. The mac sees it fine and the PC can connect to it via airport utility but won't connect as wireless and the internet. Running WPA2. Have the latest firmware in each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't mind, let's double-check your extended-network setup configuration:
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
o Verify that both “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu and “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox are selected.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Verify that “Extend a wireless network” has been selected from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Also verify that the correct Network Name is shown for the network you want the AEBSn to extend.
    Do your settings match these?

  • How to set up Airport Extreme for 11ac and 11n?

I have just purchased the new Airport Extreme (August 2014) because Apple's website states
    Simultaneous dual-band support.
AirPort Extreme features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. That means it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they’ll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.
I have number of Macs in my home from a new MacBook Pro with Mavericks to a Macbook Air with Snow Leopard (due to required software) and iPads.
So after setting up the new Extreme my new MacBook only accesses 11n as does my older Macs. I checked by holding down the option key while clicking the WiFi icon at the top of my Mac. Well, not so automatic then as I was expecting 11ac and 3 times faster access (as stated by Apple).
I then looked for some documentation for setting up but cannot find anything.
    Hence my question here.
How to set up Airport Extreme for 11ac and 11n simultaneously?
At present the new Extreme is no better than my previous 2 year old one.
    Thank you.
    Michael

How to set up Airport Extreme for 11ac and 11n simultaneously?
Assuming that it is operating correctly, 802.11ac and 802.11b/g/n are broadcast simultaneously by default.
That is advertising. The real information is usually found in the small and hard to read footnotes:
Based on theoretical peak speeds. Actual speeds will be lower.
AirPort Extreme is based on an IEEE 802.11ac draft specification. Performance based on comparison with Apple’s 802.11n products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11ac-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires a Wi‑Fi-enabled device. Actual speed will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions.
Since the 802.11ac signal is being broadcast only using the 5 GHz band, some users report that they have had better results by using the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then pointing their Mac to that specific signal or network. You may want to try that option.
But first as a test, please locate the MacBook Pro about 10-15 feet or 3-4 meters from the AirPort Extreme with clear line-of-sight between the two devices. Restart both the AirPort Extreme and the Macbook Pro and then check to see if the Mac is connected to an 802.11ac signal.
If not, please power off your other wireless devices...computers, mobile devices, etc. temporarily, and try the same test again.
    Please report on your results.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Sorry, I forgot to mention a few points:
    1) I don't have the Airport Extreme base station;
    2) My PowerBook is connect to the internet thru wired connection with the Built-in Ethernet;
    3) The Airport is turned on, but my PSP's scan cannot locate the PowerBook at all (while it find someone else's network)
So, I wonder if I can just connect my PSP to the built-in Airport in the PowerBook directly. So that I can have internet access on my PSP.

  • Is there a way to test airport extreme for optimal function

Is there a way to test airport extreme for optimal function?

    In your Mavericks OS X.
Go to the WiFi icon on the top right.
Hold the option key and click.
At the bottom of the list you will see "Open Wireless Diagnostics"
Open this and you can diagnose your wireless network.
While it'sopen hit the Command + 2 and it will open the Utilities window.
This will give you and overview of interference and what channel is best.
You can alos run a speedtes over WiFi then run a speedtest directly connected with ethernet.

  • Using an aiport express + airport extreme for printing.

I have an airport extreme to which I connect a lexmark color laser printer. Everything works well. I just moved and am now using DSL. There is no phone jack in the room where I want to put my printer. Can I use the airport extreme for my wireless internet through my dsl phone line and then use an airport express to hook up my printer and print wirelessly? Can I use a second airport express for a second printer which will go in yet a different place?

Another option would be to setup the Express units as clients on your Airport network especially if you don't need to extend your network.
You will still be able to print, but avoid the bandwidth hit that using WDS (extending the network) has.

  • USB External HD Connected to Airport Extreme - access from outside network?

    Hi,
Is there any type of software that I can get that would allow me to access my shared external hard drive w/ my airport extreme from outside the network, like some type of ftp server or anything that would allow me to access it from outside my home?

A simple way would be to share it via Apple File Sharing and FTP...
You'll need a static Ip and a hostname, although it is easy to set up if you have a dynamic Ip too...
Creat a free hostname on "www.dyndns.com" (for example), open your AFP and FTP ports on your router, and then use sotware such as "Rumpus" for the FTP service and tell it what drive you want to share (it can be a network drive). For AFP, all you have to do is connect to the server from the finder, hitting "Go...Connect to Server.."
I've got my extreme drive shared globally and it works fine...just need some time and patience to set up the ports and hostnames...
If you need help on the setup just email me... [email protected] and i'll be happy to answer any questions...

    Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering.
