Adding Airport Extreme (n) to existing network

Hi, I hope someone can help!
I bought an Airport Extreme (802.11n) hoping that I could connect it into my existing wireless network and use it to provide (wireless) access to a 400Gb USB disk and a Canon Printer.
I have experimented with it a little to establish that the disk and the printer would play ball. They both work via the Extreme ONLY when I access the base station directly, ie in a different network. Problem is I want to be able to use things like iTunes from the internet on a different network and use the 400Gb disk for the downloads! (Phew that's the scene set)
My existing wireless setup is: Linksys WAG300n wireless adsl router which allows access to the internet for my macbook pro and my son's and daughter's winxp machines.
To date I have tried setting the network up using the linksys as the dhcp server (as it usually is) and then with the Airport Extreme as the DHCP server (with the linksys dhcp server off). I am now ABSOLUTELY out of ideas.
Is what I want to do impossible or not? All I want to do is have the Airport Extreme sit within my wireless network providing access to disk and printer. I actually don't want it to act as a base station at all (right ??). Can I get the extreme to act as just an access portal to another piece of equipment?
btw the linksys WAG300n is not WDS capable so I can set up a "backbone" which I guess would be the ideal way to go.
btw (again) I have looked through this forum and haven't seen anything that immediately looks like the answer to me, so I apologise for my dumb question if it has been answered before.
Hope someone can shed some light on the problem!

ADGlassby, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but that is ONLY possible if the main base station supports WDS.

  • Adding AirPort Extreme for a separated network?

    Hi,
I'm trying to get a network setup in a small office, but the details have me swimming in the deep end with various issues (DCHP, subnet masks, etc.).
    Objective:
Configure two separate networks that don't see each other and both provide WiFi, but share the same internet connection.
    Setup:
    Phone Line>
    BEC (5200?) DSL Modem/Wifi Router (w/ 4 Cat5 ports)>
    AirPort Extreme (7.7.3)
    Dream:
Connect to the printer from both networks. The printer is currently hard-wired into one of the BEC ports.
Many thanks for any help (or clarifying questions).
    Z

OK, thanks.  The AirPort routers use the 10.0.1.x range, so there will not be any chance of an IP address conflict between the two routers on your network.
Open up AirPort Utility again, click on Edit in the smaller window that appears, then click the Network tab at the too of the window
Change the setting for Router Mode from "Off" (Bridge Mode) to DHCP and NAT
You may see a message about Setup over the WAN port on the AirPort, just click to ignore that, then click Update at the lower right of the window and give the AirPort a full minute to restart.
The following step is optional, but recommended if you can do it
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord and also power down the BEC modem/router
Wait a minute, then start the BEC modem/router and let it run a minute or two
Then, start the AirPort and let it run a minute
At this point, the AirPort will display a slow, blinking amber light.
Go ahead and test a few devices to make sure that they can now connect to the AirPort wireless and get a good Internet connection. Also check to see that they cannot "see" any of the devices on your 192.168 network and vice versa.
Post back on your progress, please.

  • Adding Airport Express to my existing network

I'm sure this has been covered, but I've been wading through the various posts on AXpress and I have just become more and more confused with the different scenarios that people are presenting....so here's what I want to do.....
I currently have a G5 connected to a Belkin wireless router that also has 4 ethernet ports. The G5 is connected to it via ethernet. My Netcomm ADSL modem connects to the Belkin router and I have a Macbook connected wirelessly. I also have a Belkin Wireless Range Extender that picks up the wireless signal from the main Belkin router and repeats it so that I have great wireless signal no matter where I am in my house. All of this works flawlessly, and has done so for the last 2 years.
Now I want to add the AXpress that I have just purchased purely for the Airtunes feature. Can I just add it in to the existing network without changing what is already working perfectly? I would imagine that I should be able to use either my G5 or my MacBook to stream iTunes music to the AExpress?
Could someone either tell me how to, or point me in the direction of a post that deals specifically with this type of set-up?...I would be most appreciative, as I said, I was just becoming more confused as I read the existing posts.
    Thanks in advance.

I am in the same position that you are, except that I have already been using the Airport Express for itunes for nearly a year now and it works great. I called Apple to get it working and it worked fabulously in my old apartment. However, I want to use it with my new wireless set-up, which works great in my new apartment. I just want them to work together....
I have a linsky wireless WRTP54G for my RCA broadband router that came with my DSL. When I use the airport utility to scan for this "base station" as the instructions for creating a WDS say to, I can't find it. Actually, the computer can't find it and I get an error. I am pretty sure that I have the right IP address and that the password is correct, because I just reset it through linksys. I think if I could just get past this step that I could continue on.
    Does anyone have any advice?

  • Airport Extreme wired to existing network

    Henry B:

Did all you suggested. However how do I find the new USB harddrive on the network. I cannot find it.
By the way thank you for all your help today. This is why I would never go back to brand X !!

A suggestion... You are making it extremely difficult for Henry or anyone else to help you. Stop starting new threads. Instead reply to posts in one thread. That way Henry or anyone else can quickly scan through, see what was suggested, what was tried, and perhaps come up with some new suggestion.

  • Adding new airport extreme to an existing airport express network...

i currently have a home airport network comprising two airport express units; one attached to the cable modem in the bedroom and the other downstairs in my study (extending the existing network and feeding a shared USB printer and airtunes speakers). i've recently bought an airport extreme, to improve network performance. i also plan to add a NAS in the next week or so.
ideally i'd like to situate the new airport extreme in the study, as i don't want to have to keep the NAS in my bedroom!
my question is this, if i add the new airport extreme to the existing airport network, will i see the benefit of the 802.11n connection, or should the extreme be set up as the primary base station?

... will i see slower transfer speeds (than if it was connected to the extreme) to / from the NAS when accessing it wirelessly from elsewhere in the house?
No. The transfer speed will be limited by the slowest connection, which is almost certainly your wireless connection speed.
If you buy a switch, buy a gigabit switch. Not because a slower one will limit your transfer speed, but because the Extreme is Gigabit and any newer equipment is likely to be as well. The advantage would only be relevant to the wired LAN.
The Express's Ethernet is not Gigabit but there is no reason for it to be, since it cannot connect to anything other than a slower wireless connection anyway.

  • After setting up airport extreme to my existing wireless network after restart unable to conect even the light is green is telling me need to manage network im usin airport utility in pc

I try to set up my airport extreme thru my existing  wifi network using airport utility 5.6 on pc after i was done said that after restarting unable to located extreme to check in my manage networks Ican se green light on extreme but can not find in network to manually add on. Any help woul be appreciated!

If nothing works, try a factory reset: disconnect the Extreme from power, press the reset button, plug in power while still pressing the reset button, release reset button after 5 seconds or so.
This method usually helps me with problems with my Airport Extreme and Express (this happens seldom by the way). The only disadvantage is that you have to set it up again completely.

  • Will adding AirPort Extreme to my fios router improve my speed and distance to led tv.. The tv keeps dropping network and 50% of the time it tells me my broadband is too slow. I have upgraded to fios faster internet speed.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my Fios router improve reception on tv located about 50 feet away..have new top of the line samsung smart tv and it drops signal every other day. When trying to watch netflix or amazon it transmits in SD only says bandwidth is not high enough for Hd. My ipad laptops and iphone work fine in this room. Any help will be appreciated or am I better off with a booster.

The AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly "boost" or "repeat" the wireless signal from the Fios router, since It will only work with another Apple router for that feature.
So, if you plan to extend or repeat the FIos wireless signal, you should use a product by the same manufacturer as the Fios router....or possibly a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear.
Make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy any kind of extender or repeater.....since you cannot know if the product will help until you try it out in your home.
The TV really needs a wired Ethernet connection from the Fios router if at all possible.

  • Windows XP laptop can't connect to Airport Extreme used to extend network.

Have a time capsule for main wireless. PC works fine connecting to it. Have added Airport Extreme to extend network. The mac sees it fine and the PC can connect to it via airport utility but won't connect as wireless and the internet. Running WPA2. Have the latest firmware in each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't mind, let's double-check your extended-network setup configuration:
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
o Verify that both “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu and “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox are selected.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Verify that “Extend a wireless network” has been selected from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Also verify that the correct Network Name is shown for the network you want the AEBSn to extend.
    Do your settings match these?

  • USB External HD Connected to Airport Extreme - access from outside network?

    Hi,
Is there any type of software that I can get that would allow me to access my shared external hard drive w/ my airport extreme from outside the network, like some type of ftp server or anything that would allow me to access it from outside my home?

A simple way would be to share it via Apple File Sharing and FTP...
You'll need a static Ip and a hostname, although it is easy to set up if you have a dynamic Ip too...
Creat a free hostname on "www.dyndns.com" (for example), open your AFP and FTP ports on your router, and then use sotware such as "Rumpus" for the FTP service and tell it what drive you want to share (it can be a network drive). For AFP, all you have to do is connect to the server from the finder, hitting "Go...Connect to Server.."
I've got my extreme drive shared globally and it works fine...just need some time and patience to set up the ports and hostnames...
If you need help on the setup just email me... [email protected] and i'll be happy to answer any questions...

  • Resetting Airport Extreme disabled my home network. Now when i attempt to get to internet with iPad, or iPhone, I see an Earthlink (ISP) window with message: The internet connection is currently in use by another computer (nun.nn.n.nn)

Resetting Airport Extreme disabled my home network. Now when i attempt to get to internet with iPad, or iPhone, I see an Earthlink (ISP) window with message: The internet connection is currently in use by another computer (nun.nn.n.nn) Enter your DSL Account logon psassword to switch the internet connection to this computer. If I do that, other messages follow. I am usually able to switch connection, but can have only one device on internet at a time. Tried to correct problem using Airport Utility, but failed.

Unfortunately, there is mass confusion about whether a device might be a modem or a modem/router since the terms are mixed up all the time. Even though a device might have only one Ethernet port, it can still be a router.
    If this is your "modem".......
    http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netopia-cayman-3341-router/4507-3319_7-30484785. html
It is not a modem.....it is a modem/router. If that is the case, then the AirPort Extreme is not the only router on your network....it is one of two routers, and it should be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Does this device appear to be your "modem"?

  • Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Yes, if the AirPort Extreme is joining a wireless network that has been created by another Apple router. In this case, it will be extending the wireless network and the Ethernet ports are enabled on the "remote" AirPort Extreme.
No, if the AirPort Extreme will be used with another router from another manfacturer.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express can do what you ask about with virtually any wireless network using a special feature called ProxySTA. It won't extend the wireless with a non-Apple router, but the Ethernet port will be enabled.

Just spoke with Cisco about the router.  They said the router is compatible with the E1500.  They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1).  They told me I would have to change it if that was the case.  How would I do that?

  • Trouble adding Airport Extreme to existing network using Netgear N150  network

I'd appreciate any help with my situation.
I don't know all of the technical terms, but basically most of my house is hardwired with CAT-5 cables. I have a broadband internet modem hooked up to some sort of switch, then a Netgear N150 router which is plugged into an ethernet socket in one of the rooms. Right now there is limited wireless access in certain parts of the house. I was hoping ideally to use the Airport Extreme to widen my existing internet coverage, but thought that I should first try to set it up as the primary router so I wouldn't run into any compatibility issues. However, because my Imac is pretty old, I was unable to set up the Extreme via my Imac as the Airport Utility software was out-of-date, and the link to update the software was non-functional. What I ended up having to do was temporarily plug my Netgear router back in, go to a different room, plug my Extreme into an ethernet socket, then configure the Extreme using an Ipad which was connected wirelessly to my Netgear network. However, when I then went to replace the Netgear router with the Extreme base station, my Ipad and Iphone could not connect to the new Extreme network. I do SEE it, but I keep getting the spinning spokewheel and it never connects. The odd thing is that I CAN connect to the Extreme network with my Imac.
I have tried multiple times to reset the Extreme, my Ipad, and the Netgear router, all to no avail. I have the latest software for the Extreme as well as for the Airport Utility. I've also tried playing with a few different combinations of both routers plugged in, 1 router by itself, and various settings on the Extreme. Right now I have the Extreme set up as a Bridge, and both routers plugged directly into the wall in separate rooms, but right now the only way I can access the internet is via my old Netgear network.
    THANKS in advance for advice!

I have a broadband internet modem hooked up to some sort of switch,
Can you provide the make and model of the modem?  Depending on the type of modem this might be, the Ethernet switch may need to come after the Netgear router, not between the modem and the Netgear router.

  • Adding Extreme to my existing network

I have an existing 802.11g network on a Linksys router. I have to leave this router as is because my wife's workplace bought it and set it up for VPN. I am not experienced enough to redo everything on a new router so I am just going to leave it alone because her job depends on it.
Now........I was wondering...... if I got a new MacBook Pro which would use 802.11n...........could I get a new AirPort Extreme, and hook it into one of my Linksys router's ports (thus using the same internet connection).......... then set it up as a "different network" using the Apple software, and use it as a 802.11n network only......... ?? Is that possible? I heard something about doing this on a podcast, but was unclear. Would it interfere with the other network ? They talked about setting it as a bridge, but would it be able to do the n networking like that ?
I'm hoping someone can make sense of my explanation.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes...and to keep the 802.11n wireless network from conflicting with the 802.11g one, you should set the Radio Mode of the AEBSn to "802.11n only (5 GHz)".
