Adding Airport to Mac Mini G4

Hi all,
I have a simple question about the Mac Mini G4. My girlfriend bought one a few years ago without the Airport card. Is it as easy as buying the card from the Apple store and installing it? Or does this model not support it? I've also saw USB wireless adapters, any of these work with the mini? The store we bought it from didn't give me any solid answers on the subject. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Not that easy I'm afraid. The mini doesn't actually have anywhere to plug an airport card, so if it doesn't already have airport, you have to add the card, a small adapter board, and the antenna. Typically these can be got as part of the full airport and bluetooth kit for around $99, though since the mini isn't user-serviceable, these are not parts that you can buy from Apple. They can sometimes be got via apple service providers (who can fit them too of course) but there are other sources that get them in stock - often briefly. The part number is M9870Z/A and if you Google that, you should find a few suppliers. Watch prices though, because this is a rare item so some charge rather more than the 'proper' price!
As to fitting - it's fiddly and involves a fair bit of disassembly, but with tools, care and patience you can do it yourself. Alternatively, you should be able to get you local authorized service provider to do it, but check how much they'll charge first.
USB adapters aren't a particularly good way to go for a network interface, so personally I wouldn't advise that route. If you look at similar topics here in the recent past, you'll often see it suggested that wiring a wifi bridge to the ethernet port is often suggested instead, and that would certainly be my second option after the internal airport kit.

  • Airport and Mac Mini

I just bought a Mac Mini. This is what I want to do...
DSL to Airport to Mac Mini.
I need to be able to open all the ports on the Airport (ethernet) so my Mac Mini can serve email, ftp, WebDav, Web, Internet Printer Sharing, etc...
I want the Mac Mini to be connected via ethernet and not wireless.
I also want wireless on the airport for my laptop and iMac.
Should I do internet sharing for the laptop and iMac from the internal Mac Mini Airport or can I assign a separate IP address for wireless so the laptop and iMac are behind a wireless firewall?
Any other suggestions? Before I had my DSL go into my G4 and my G4 had the static IP. I then had a second network card for my LAN. Since the Mac Mini only has 1 ethernet port - I can't do it this way anymore.
On the Mac Mini, should I use the same ethernet connection for internet and LAN? I hear it's not secure.
Just trying to figure out the best way to set up my gateway...
    TIA for your help

My problem is the Mac Mini has 1 ethernet port. I need 2.
I have a TrendNet TU-ET100C which is a USB to Ethernet converter.
If I can get this to work on the Mac Mini - then I can continue to do the same things I have done in the past and that is to have my DSL go into the first Ethernet port and then share IP to the other ethernet port.
I just can't get the Mac Mini to recognize the TrendNet.
I have never worked with a router before. How does that work? Would that be a better option? The $40 isn't a problem. I just want the stuff to work.
I bought the Mini because the G4 I was using gave off too much heat during the summer. Makes my office hard to work in. 80 deg in the house - 90 in my office...
    Thanks

  • Can't Connect to Router Using Airport Through Mac Mini

    Hey guys.
I got a new 13" White MacBook in Jan. of this year (2009) and it hasn't given me any trouble, until now.
I've been able to connect to any wireless network before, both through modems and computer-to-computer.
However, my new router is giving me some trouble. It's a Tenda brand router connected via Ethernet cable to a new MacMini. The internet on the MacMini is working fine, but I can't seem to find the wireless network the modem should be giving off on my MacBook. As I said earlier, I've never had any problems with my airport before.
I have all the information needed to connect to the modem (IP, Subnet Mask, Router , and DNS Server) but I'm not sure where/how I'm supposed to enter them.
    Can someone help?

Well, i fixed it! Thanks to other questions in the Mac Forums, i learned that if i turned on the Internet Sharing in my System Preferences i could use the Mac Mini as a sort of 'host' computer. For any having the same or similar problems, here's the thread:

  • Airport freeze /  Mac mini

    Hello,
I have a problem with my quite new "Mac mini" (all latest software updates installed):
The mini is connected wireless, as all other computers and my i-Phone; 7*24 availability.
All other computers work without interruption, bu the Mac mini "freezes" 1-2times per day: I have to restart the "Airport" and everything is fine again.
In the internet I have found the hint to set the DNS address to googles servers, it reduced the "freezes" from 15 to 1-2 per day, but is still not satisfactory....
Is this a common problem or a problem for my individual Mac min?
Thank you very much for some hints & best regards
    Dr. D. Werner

Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
You are still covered by warranty. Since it has never worked it may be something that you cannot fix yourself. Why not take it back and have them repair it so that it works?

  • Airport, NAS, & Mac Mini

I have recently been putting speakers throughout my home and utilizing airport expresses to create zones throughout.  The one big problem i come across is that if you choose to listen to pandora on your phone and airplay it is that you can only choose one location to play it.  Is this an airplay/airport express issue or strickly a pandora issue?  However, you can choose multiple locations, multiple volumn adjustments etc within itunes or the remote app.  I have an external HD hooked up to my mackbook air.  When the machine is shut down you obviously loose your ability to access your library thru itunes which affects my apple TV's as well.  I have been looking into Network Attached Storage.  It appears that I could relocate my music to the NAS without to much issue.  Now, if i got a mac mini and hooked it up as a media server to my home theater and used the itunes app on that to process everything would that work?  Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.  Also any recommendations on brands of NAS's that work well with OSX would help.

If you're using two interfaces on the same machine (e.g. the wired ethernet and the AirPort link) at the same time, they can not be in the same subnet. This means you can't use the same 10.x.x.x range on both interfaces at the same time.
As a result, to connect the NAS to the Mini via ethernet you will have to use a different subnet. This can either be a subnet you set (e.g. 192.168.x.x) or self-assigned (the 169.254.x.x you have right now).
As for other network clients seeing the NAS you have three options.
One is to have the Mini re-share the volumes (Mini mounts the NAS, clients mount the Mini). This does defeat the main purpose of using a NAS since it's only seen by one client.
Option two is to setup the Mini as a router to route between the wired and wireless networks. You'd need to add a static route to each client telling them how to get to the NAS (via the Mini's wireless address), but it could be done.
Your third option is to re-architect your network which may or may not be easy, depending on your setup. You can plug a hard drive directly into some AirPort Base Stations, for example, and have the base station act as the NAS.
You might also connect the NAS to a switch on the wired-side of your base station.
There may also be other options you could consider.

  • Added Ram to Mac Mini & Now There is Loud Fan Noise

    Hi everyone,
Today I bought a Mac Mini Core Solo. I brought it home and opened it to add an additional 1gig of ram. I now have 1 stick with 1GIG and 1 stick with 256mb of ram inside of it. After adding the additional ram I closed the case and turned the power on. It picked up the new ram but it is now making a really loud fan noise. I'm nervous that something has gone awry. Any suggestions for as to what is wrong? Did i do a big bad?
    I'd appreciate any advice!

Sounds like a connector to the fan was pulled loose when you dismantaled the mini to get at the memory slots.
    See the pictures here...
    http://www.applefritter.com/MacMini_Take_ApartGuide
Open her up and check that the wires from the fan a re seated onto the motherboard correctly.

  • Adding computer to Mac Mini server network?

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me how to add a Mac Air to the computers my Mac Mini server recognizes? Currently, I cannot share files between computers.
I have "All Users" checked under sys prefs >sharing.
    Thanks for any help!

Hmmm, not sure which end the problem is on, if you don't get an answer here you might post over here...

  • Airport on Mac Mini has basically no signal

I've searched the forums, but haven't really seen a solution. I have a one month old Mac Mini, which has the most dificult time finding my wireless connection. Anyone have any suggestions or tips? My laptop never has issues with the signal, but the Mini always does....any help is appreciated.

Yeah, I'm bringing it back tomorrow to see if Geek Squad can troubleshoot it. If not, then I'll talk to Apple. My brother also wants one, so I'll be getting his and seeing if his does the same thing before I send it to him (he lives overseas). But this time I'm going to make sure I can remote into the mini in case I lose the video output.
The most I've seen researching about this issue, people can still obtain video by turning off their mini, or TV... or both, then turning them on in a certain order. While mine is still no video on multiple tv's, monitors, and different cables and types of cables.
I'll be sure to post anything if Geek Squad or Apple finds anything on my problem.

  • Adding new mac mini to network causing problems

    Hello,
I have a small home network that has been working great, and just bought a mac mini for media purposes. Unfortunately, adding the mini has ruined my network performance, and I don't understand why.
    Previous Setup:
    - airport extreme (firmware 7.4.2)
    - 2 macbook pros using wireless (leopard & snow leopard)
    - airport express only used to make a printer accessible wirelessly (6.3, "join a wireless network")
    - iPhone
that worked great, but one of the macbook pros was doing double duty as media and work computer. Also, there was no nice way to do time machine backups without physically plugging in a USB HD. I was using USB into airport extreme, but that is not supported and never worked well for me (though it seems to work for others).
So, I bought a mac mini in Oct' 2009 (immediately after small upgrades were announced).
    New setup:
    - airport extreme
    - mac mini using ethernet cable to airport extreme (USB HD shared for macbook pros to do wireless time machine backups) mac mini running snow leopard
    - 2 macbook pros as before
    - airport express serving printer as before
    - iPhone
    Problems:
    - very slow wireless (skype is unusable)
    - dropping wireless connections a lot (disassociating with XXX (reserve 2) message)
I tried turning off everything for a few min and trying again with the mac mini unplugged (eg. previous setup). Everything worked great, Skype 2 way video was fine. Then I plugged in the mini, and again I have the same problems.
It's frustrating because everything is made by Apple, and I bought the **** mac mini partially because the airport extreme-USB HD solution (eg. mimicking a time capsule) is not officially supported.
It seems like there is some weird interference being caused by the mini. It's not a wireless issue (b/c it's plugged in), but maybe it's a DHCP problem.
Also, I can't find where one sets the maximum number of DHCP leases that the airport extreme will offer. I seem to remember that setting, and thought that might be the problem, but I can't find it now.

For those that might find this thread:
    - moving the mini and the airport extreme about 18 inches apart helped some, will monitor this.
here's a couple useful articles about the interference issues in general:
    http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/hardware/optimizingairportconnectivity
    http://www.macworld.com/article/60801/2007/11/dec07mobilemac.html
I can't turn off bluetooth b/c that's the mini's keyboard and mouse. I tried to move to the 5GHz band for the wireless... which seems to work pretty well for the macbook pros, but the airport express I have (for printing) won't support that so it's a no-go solution for now (unless I spend even more money for one of the new ones).
Seems odd that the mini and airport extreme which look like they were designed to be stacked on top of each other, actually don't work well that way.

  • Mac Mini Won't Boot or Internet Restore - Hard Drive Boots on Macbook

Late 2012 Mac Mini. I cloned my 10.10.2 installation of Yosemite over from my Macbook pro 6,2 to a 1TB Samsung 840 SSD. It booted with no issues besides the keychain being lost and all passwords having to be re-entered.
After a week of going perfectly, it stops recognizing the USB keyboard after I unplugged it and plugged it back in. So I rebooted and get the dreaded stop sign after the boot failed. Oops. I enabled trim before I cloned, but forgot to check if it was working in the cloned drive (seems it was in the end). Since there was no recovery partition, I booted into Internet Recovery, but that hung using both WPA and WPA2 router logins. It obviously was syncing with router, but I got error -2002f in every configuration I tried. It also didn't seem to recognize an ethernet connection. Weird stuff.
I remembered I had an issue with a previous Mac Mini of the same model and the permissions after a clone. I repaired permissions and that was that. This is different because it wouldn't boot into Safe Mode. Resetting the PRAM did bring back an audible chime at least.
I pulled the SSD out of the Mac Mini and alt booted in from my Macbook 6,2. No issues (except the keychain thing again( and it loaded quickly. Nothing seemed to be wrong.
Then I put it back in the Mac Mini and tested it with known working RAM. Still the same thing. So now I am going to sleep on it and try to figure it out. It is unlikely to be a hardware failure as the Mac Mini was made in May 2014 and I bought factory refurbished.  It seems to be an issue relating to the SSD as it boots other drives.
    Any ideas?

Is this SSD an additional drive added to your Mac Mini or did you replace the HDD with it? If it's an additional drive and since it's a Samsung, depending where you purchased your drive doubler kit (iFixit or OWC) you can try swapping the drives in the bays. I know for a fact that Samsung SSDs do not work right with the iFixit drive doubler kit's SATA cable. But it does work correctly with the Apple supplied SATA cable. If it's the OWC SATA cable, I know for a fact those are much more reliable with Samsung, OWC, Intel, Crucial SSDs. Another thing, I would NOT enable TRIM (my opinion) using a 3rd party trim enabler if you're running Yosemite. There are issues with trim enablers and Yosemite. Just let the built-in Garbage Collection take care of things.
If it's not an additional drive that was added, does your Mac Mini boot and work fine with the stock drive that it came with? Even though it's a 2012 model, if you purchased it refurbished from Apple in May 2014, you're still under warranty (same 1yr as new Macs) and if it's having same or similar issues working with the stock drive, you can take it to a local Apple Store for warranty repair. You would need to have only the stock drive installed (no SSD) before you setup an appointment.

  • HOW DOES THE NEW MBOX 2 MINI WORK WITH THE MAC MINI?

    I have a old original Mac mini 1.25GHz with 1 GB SDRAM - 40GB Ultra ATA drive, 4x SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW) OS 10.3
I also have just added the new MAC MINI 1.66 CTO OS 10.4
    with the following configuration:
    * Processor 065-6673 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo
    * Memory 065-6676 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2x512
    * Hard Drive 065-6750 120GB Serial ATA drive
    * Optical Drive 065-6679 Combo Drive
In addition, I have a MicroNet 150 GB external hard drive.
The 3 are linked together so that the icons for the MircroNet and the old Mac mini are shown on the New Mac mini desktop.
I’ve kept the New MM as is for apps, moved most of the files and folders to the MNet, and have done a reinstall on the old MM, getting rid of almost everthing that was on it originally except the OSX and apps.
I’m thinking about using the old MM to set up a recording studio. This would involve the new MBox 2 Mini with ProTools LE. For details, just Google it. It comes 2 ways, configured for the G4 MM or for the new Intel MM. I’d rather not clutter up the new MM with this, as sometimes the Digidesign Pro Tools apps can be a bit toxic.
If I get the MBox 2 Mini and run it on the old MM, will this work? Has anyone tried this? Do I have enough processing power and speed, ram and hard drive space?
    Thanks!

MAC MINI 1.66 Intel Core Duo, Mac mini 1.25GHz MicroNet 150 GB external hard drive.   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Larry,
I just purchased a Mbox 2 Mini. I am running it flawlessly with my Core Duo 1.66Ghz Mac mini w/2GB RAM.
I have not seen the two versions for Intel and PPC Macs as you described. Digidesign only produces one box...compatible with Mac or PC.
The Digidesign site states that the Mbox 2 Mini is compatible with your 1.25GHz mini, but Pro Tools LE 7.3.x requires Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x, not Panther 10.3.x.
You would get far better perfomance using the Intel mini over the PPC. And, you would get better perfomance by maxing the RAM out as well.

I just added a new mac mini to my home network. File and screen sharing is on, so is back to my mac. The mini can see the other shared macs on the network,
but the mini doesn't show up in the shared list on the other macs.

  • Mac Mini Server Database Set-up - Configure & Implement Help

I have a database developer who is fluent in PC languages but not fluent with Macs who need serious help setting up my new database solution using my new Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.2.  They are lacking the Mac knowledge - but are working on building my database / website solution - to be implementated on the Mac Mini Server.
Quickly...Here's what we are building.  I own an Event Photography business specializing in Youth Sports.  I bring all the Mac system Computers, (MacBook Pro's, 8 iPad 2's, AirPort Extreme, Mac Mini Server).   *Important Note* - we will not ever have internet connection.  We will offer photos taken directly at the Event...to View & Order via our wireless iPads (used simply for viewing photos).  Customers are "viewing" photos from the iPads - accessing photos from our (off-line) website / database Hosted locally on our Mac Mini Server.  All our Mac Computers are "wired" / connected / to the AirPort Extreme and "shared" on a local net (again with No-internet access).
Is there anyone out there who can help them by phone / internet / shared screen etc. to HELP SET UP THE MAC MINI SERVER - to make the database work? They need help with PHP, My SQL, Apachee set-up & configure questions.
This all sounds very complex to a Non-Database guy...but probably a simple check-list walk-thru helpful guide - for someone who's more knowledgeable with working with the Mac Mini Server.
    Thanks....Anyone??

well to be honest I wanted a server to run more aspects of what I do privately (rather tahn at work) rather than use hosted accounts from disparate hosted providers on line. In partcular wanted a mail server to handle multiple mail domains, wiki server, web sever as per mail server and I was interested in what they would provide for iphone ipad etc as I have a few that I wanted to link to a server rather than individual macs and pcs
I also thought that Apple might bring their abilities to creating a great UI for essentially linux operating systems to  a server os.
from initial views though it might have been easier (cheaper) to go to ubuntu and just their server version of linux. Anyway I will persist - I will read through the stuff you guys have linked me to - colinsolutions appears to have aimed me at some useful stuff. Looks like a bigger "project" than i imagined - but I havent looked at UNIX since 1986 so if I have to get into the command line it wont kill me I am sure.
thanks for the input - if anyone else can suggets good resources that would be appreciated.
ps simon - i found that the name for the server with the .local extension is visibile from the mac via finder and allows me to connect to the shared folder. so my server is sdhome - the shared resource is sdhome.local ... not sure if this helps but...

  • Mac Mini Intel Duo or Imac g5

I have an imac g5 with that lovely logic board problem and a fan that is on 24/7 that sounds like a rocket. It has 1.5 gig of ram in it right now. I am thinking of getting rid of the imac and purchasing an intel mac mini duo with about 1 gig of ram. Would the mini stand up to my imac g5 as far as speed and using programs? I will only use photoshop cs 2 (which i know runs under rosetta)so I know it might be slower in that program.. how much slower are we talking about? Does it take a couple minutes to finish a task? I'm just doing web graphics so nothing major like 3d or anything like that. I am thinking of purchasing a 20" display as well. Any thoughts on if I should wait until the mini gets a speed bump or just keep what I have?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5 gig RAM

I did the same, switched from a iMac G5 20" 1.8 GHz and 1.2 GB RAM to a Mac mini Core Duo 1.66 with 2 Gig RAM witch a 23" CD.
For me the Mac mini is quite faster then the iMac. Universal Binary Programms are as fast or faster as on the iMac. I only have a small amount of not so much used PowerPC Programms which are not available as Universal Binaries today (one of the is Photoshop Elements 4 and Office 2004). Office runs very well for me. Photoshop is slower as on the iMac. I do not make difficult stuff in Photoshop so Performance is for me still ok, but if you work the whole day with it I would wait for a UB Version.
Something which I will change soon is the 5400rpm Harddisk, when doing a lot of Disk I/O (copying Files, backup etc.) it's slower than in the iMac. I probably will change it to a faster 7200rpm HD.
Overall I'm impressed from the Mac mini and the change was a success because I have one Windows Programm which I need daily and that was a pain in Virtual PC. Now with Parallels Desktop it works like a charm.
