Adding alternate Applications folders on other hard drives?

I just rolled out my new Mac Pro (yay!) -- I have added more hard drives (non-apple) to the system, so they appear as just standard user-owned drives (which I'm not able to figure out).
I have many dense applications that I will be installing -- CS5, Maya, ... and I would like to distribute some of them to another drive.
Is there an elegant way to accomplish this. Some code, like Xcode, cannot be installed on any drive that does not have OS X (understandable) the rest should be able to live in an Applications folder I create.
Open to suggestions!
Thanks...

Regarding the system disk... I notice the stock disk is a Western Digital and it has an Apple Logo on it. The other drives are just standard Seagate 1TB and when I install them, they are shown as owned by me; the Get Info reflects the first drive as System (in the permissions) which is not available to the others and it doesn't matter if I chown to root:admin and change the "ignore" option. Anyway, another topic.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this but it is normal for the current boot volume to show system as owner & other attached volumes to show as owned by whatever account is currently logged in. This is dynamic: if for example you install the OS on a second volume & boot from it, it will then show system as owner.
The OS does this automatically to give each volume the proper permissions. Don't try to change it. At best nothing will change, at worst you will run into permission problems.

  • How can I install an Application on one of my other Hard Drives?

I would like to know how I can install Applications on one of my other hard drives. I find that when I go to install an Application, the main hard drive shows up allowing me to install it. The other hard drives show as unable to install Application. What am I missing? Thanks.

A system is what is missing as the installer looks for a valid folder, and may need to install support files in /Library as well.

  • How do I save to individual folders on my hard drive?

How do I save items to individual folders on my hard drive? When I try now it shows the Macintosh HD icon as an option but not the individual folders I've created there. I think I need to go in to Automator but I must be doing something wrong. I selected "Folder Action" then added several items about PDF
documents and add photos to album. I've specified Macintosh HD as the location and hit run.
It appears to have run correctly because it asks me if I want to save the results. A friend of mine runs several web sites. He has asked me to serve as his off site backup so I'm trying to download several years of material. Saving everything to the HD and then dragging each item to where it belongs will take forever.
    I'm hoping someone can help.

  • How to move email in bulk to folders on my hard drive

I'm a new Mac user and imported substantial numbers of email from my PC. I've also been adding to them at the rate of about 20/day. Although I have created a number of dedicated folders in Apple Mail to keep them organized, I would like to move the entire contents (or most) of the email from some of those folders to folders on my hard drive, since I want to retain them but don't need them quickly available to me right now.
I've tried the old drag 'n drop, which doesn't seem to work. Anybody know how to do this?
    Thanks

How best to archive emails likely has many answers. I don't know the best approach. All I do is create addtional mailboxes or folders within Apple Mail. I have never yet attempted or needed to move the emails out of Apple Mail to some other location on my HD.

  • How do I archive my verizon email folders into zip folders onto my hard drive?

I have archived my folders twice before into zip folders on my hard drive by using an option in verizon yahoo mail. The last time was last night. However I can not find this option again. Tech support does not know how.
    Thanks

    Hello Annie3,
Verizon Yahoo! mail does not archive using win zip presently.  It appears you were using a 3rd party application to do this which is why your not finding it in the Verizon Yahoo! software.  You can however download the messages into a 3rd party POP client software such as Outlook, Outlook express, Eudora, Thunderbird, Incredimail, etc...  You can find more information on the features of Verizon Yahoo! mail in the help section link http://help.yahoo.com//l/us/verizon/mail/

  • I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

  • Can I use 'Macintosh HD' folder time machine creates like any other hard drive folder?

Very simply, is it possible, after using Time Machine to back up my Laptop, to use the 'Macintosh HD' Folder it creates like I would any other hard drive by selecting and extracting specific folders and backed up items as I see fit instead of going in to the Time Machine software and asking it to restore the drive to one of its 'backups' -essentially governing what exactly goes back in to my freshly cleared out laptop's internal hard drive? Will I run in to any problems? I am asking as I have picked up a software bug that I need to wipe off laptop hdd that would still be in the backups I have done and go back on to the laptop if I just asked Time Machine to restore.

  • Adobe CS5 programs have trouble opening folders on external hard drives under 10.10.2

Just upgraded 2 mac's to 10.10.2. One is a late 2013 Mac Pro, the other is a lot-of-the line, BTO iMac 5K. (Processors and Ram are not an issue)
Both InDesign and Illustrator (CS5) are having difficulty opening folders on external hard drives. Mac Pro is connected to a 5GB LaCie d2 via thunderbolt cable, while the 5K is connected to a 2TB WD my book studio for Mac via FW800 with an apple branded Thunderbolt adapter. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Using the File>open command then drilling down to the selected folder on the Hard Disk drive, the finder sits blank with the spinning beach ball going.
Other local folders open up quickly and populate file lists with no problems.
Some folders on the external drive can be accessed through the File>open finder dialogue however they are folders that contain fewer sub-folders and files.
    Update while typing this...
Both Folders that were giving us problems contained a shortcut. Hiding that shortcut inside anouther local folder seems to have cleared up the trick. This is a short term work around and I am wondering if Apple is aware of this issue or if others have found the same problem as I have and if this work around fixes their issues?

How long have you been running 10.9?
In my case the external drives go to sleep and have to wake up. Not much to do with Mavericks, just hardware sleeping to save energy. Note that 10.9 is much more energy aware and may put things to sleep more often.  That may be a fair trade off

  • I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive; is it possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my mac?

I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook 10.6.7 but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my Mac?

I think you're confused about how much hard drive space you have.  You probably have 2 GB of RAM...  there hasn't been a Mac shipped with only a 2 GB hard drive in a while.  At the bottom of any Finder window, how much space is available?
If you're actually running low on space, you should move documents to the external drive, since many applications want to be on the system drive.

  • How to move multiple emails from Mail to my folders on the hard drive

I would like to be able to move multiple emails at a time from a given mailbox to a selected folder on the hard drive in a format that I can subsequently read.
I know I can move them one at a time in RTF. And either RTF or HTML would be fine (along with whatever attachments) as a format.
But I can't seem to find either a command or a format that will allow me to do this.
My goal isn't archiving -- I want easy access to these emails and their attachments. I just want to get them out of Mail and into the folders on my hard drive that have other documents with related content.
I would greatly appreciate any advice that someone could give me.

  • Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Photoshop itself needs to reside inside of it's Applications folder so that it has access to it's Libraries and plugins. So if you are going to attempt to store and run it from an external drive you need to copy the whole Application folder or install it directly to the external drive. Even still I am not 100% positive it will work as I know it still needs to access your Library/Application Support for additional files and licensing.
Why do you want to run Photoshop from an external drive?

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

how do i recover music from old computer. its broken and i did not have the music backed up on any other hard drive.

OK, well, seems like you need to lose the attitude if you really want help.
There are several ways to get music from iTunes on your computer to your device.
The easiest is to sync directly with iTunes by connecting your device to your computer, selecting the device, setting up your Profile pages, and then clicking the Sync button to sync.
First you want to open iTunes and under Preferences>Devices, make sure that you are not syncing automatically:
Make sure that box is checked.
Then follow the instructions in the article below for either your computer or your Mac to set up your Profile pages and to sync your music via iTunes:
    WINDOWS IOS SYNC ITUNES 11
iTunes 11 for Mac: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can also directly download music from iTunes to your device by going to the iTunes icon, going to "Purchased", and selecting the items that are not on your device that show a little cloud next to them. Click on the cloud and the music will download.
You might also want to familiarize yourself with your iPhone 5 manual. It has all the answers you cannot find on Google or by trying to just do it by brute force. If you would take a little time to read about your device and how to use it, you might not be so frustruated and unnecessarily snarky to people who are trying to help:

Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.
