Adding an extra video track to FCP timeline?

Hi there
I'm trying to add an extra video track to the timeline to add some extra titles; the first two video spaces (V1 and V2) are being used. I'd like to add a V3. Suggestions?

You should be able to do it with the normal menu command under the Sequence menu ... or simply drag a clip to the area above your existing tracks and a new one will be created.

  • Step 1 - how does one create a video track in FCP X?

Just purchased FCP X & wow ... sparing all the rants I've been hearing, I'm sure it can do what I'm looking for, just that all the features are now hidden from view.
Step 1 - anyone know how to create additional video tracks?

Tried that & a Pandora's box of other questions opened up. Doing some research, watching videos, etc... just need to scrap most/all knowledge of previous FCP versions & start from scratch with this new interface philosophy it would seem.
One other symptom that seems disturbing: sometimes activiating a feature does not activate a feature.
Example, I wanted to silence the audio while skimming, so unchecked "audio skimming" in the view menu.
    Audio still plays while skimming.
Decided to try unchecking all four options at the bottom of the view menu (skimming, clip skimming, audio skimming, snapping).
    Nothing changed.
I can still skim clips, and audio still plays.
    Why would this happen?

  • Adding a new video track

I am usually working in FCP, and the ability to add a new video track is simple.  How do I add a new video track to my iMovie project...?
    Thanks

iMovie doesn't support multiple video tacks the way the FinalCut Pro does.
If you want to do something like a side-by-side or picture-in-picture first enable Advanced Tools in iMovie>Preferences. Now drag your second clip on top of a clip in your Project.

  • Adding a 2nd subtitle track to new timeline in DVD Studio Pro

I have made a video with English subtitles in FCP and Using DVD Studio Pro. Now it is time to add spanish subtitles and also enter redited timeline. I haven't managed to find a way to import the english subtitle track into a new project, or export it over to a new project. Apple training program for DVDSP has no guidance. Anyone know how to avoid having to renter manually english subtitles?  Thanks, Laura

The subtitles are made in DVD Studio Pro, not FCP Pro. It is easy to add a 2nd subtitle track to an existing project. What I need to do is have a NEW project so I can use my NEW re-edited timeline. The question is how do i copy/import/export my english track that is already in a .dspproj file, so I can use it in a new project (it is a new timeline) to create a new edition of my dvd. Again, the subtitles are not in FCP.  Is there really no way to use the english subtitles already created in DVD STU Pro. As I said, there are no istructions in the help manual, nor are there in the Apple DVD Studio Pro training book/dvd.
    Thanks, Laura

  • Slashes on video track for fcp 6

Hi, I'm curious what these lines are. They're slashes that go from top left to the bottom right of the track and im wondering if it will affect the output of my final product. It's also very annoying to see. lol thank you.

If its actually on the track (timeline) it could be that those tracks are locked.
Try toggling the little padlock button in the patchbay on the left on the timeline.

  • Playing 2 Video Tracks simultaneously in FCP?

Hello everybody. Have been asking around for the last couple of days but no-one seemed to be able to help me out. My question:
Is there a way of playing 2 video tracks from the timeline simultaneously and viewing what is happening in each of the 2 tracks?
I am preparing a video piece which will be played off 2 projectors with one soundtrack. In FCP I am currently working with an audio and 2 video tracks. I will later export the video tracks separately and run them off 2 computers. However I'd like to play the piece in the timeline and see what is going on in both tracks at the same time in order to syncronize the visuals in the 2 movices. Any ideas anyone?
Help is very much appreciated. I know you can do it.
    Thanks
    Matt

I can think of 2 ways to do this. Neither are elegant, but will work. Choose the one that works with your workflow.
    1) Put one Track in V1 the other in V2 and downsize and lay them out side by side in the canvas. You'll have to paste attributes to each clip, but when you're done you can do a remove attributes and export V1 and V2 individually. This option lets you work on both timelines at the same time.
    2) Make 2 timelines and then in a 3rd put them together and do like option 1. You'll be doing some bouncing back and forth but you won't have to paste attributes all the time. If the nesting works correctly, the 3rd timeline "should" automatically update with the changes from 1 and 2.
Aftereffects gives you the ability to work in multiple timelines at once (edit one but be viewing the output of another timeline), but it's for real-time edits.

  • Video Mixdown on FCP 7.0.2

is there a video mixdown feature on FCP 7.0.2? i have 6 video tracks on my timeline that i want to combine to 1 track. if not, is there another way i can do this?
    thanks,
    OT

Or do you want to flatten them by exporting a single movie?
Nesting or flattening/importing are not quite similar but each has a specific purpose or result in a workflow.
    And welcome to the family.

  • Create a sequence with no video tracks?

How can I create an audio-only sequence? That is, how do I create a sequence that, when I drag it to the timeline, does NOT include a video track? I can always just delete the video track after inserting it, but I figure there's just an easier way to do it that I'm missing.
    Thanks in advance!

To the left of the Video tracks are jig saw looking icons. Click on one and it breaks apart. In this state no video will be added too that Video track. Unpatch V1 and V2.

  • Help! Exporting tracks from FCP to pull into a Compressor 5.1 mix

    Hi all
I'm having difficulties pulling audio tracks out of FCP 6 into Compressor to create a 5.1 mix for a DVD, and wondered if anyone could offer advice.
Our sound mixer has given us stereo and 5.1 WAV tracks, which I've laid into separate sequences under picture. (I would love to drop his tracks straight into Compressor, but they have messy heads, and include 2-pops, so I'm first aligning them with the video track in FCP.)
When I export the stereo tracks, I create a stereo mix, getting one AIFF file, which goes into Compressor's 2.0 process to create an ac3 file. All well and good.
But how should I export the 5.1 tracks? Bear in mind that I don't want to do any kind of "mixdown" in FCP, which I'm afraid is happening. The tracks are laid in this order: L, R, C, Lf, Ls, Rs.
    This is what I did:
In FCP, set in and out points where I want to trim the audio
In Audio Settings for the sequence, set all 6 tracks to Dual Mono and level at 0. (I can't help but suspect this is where I'm going wrong...)
Export - Audio to AIFF, and set export to "Channel Grouped". This gives me six separate AIFF files. BUT! Files 1 and 2 are blank (although they have the correct duration), file 3 (which I expected to be track 3 - center) has M&E but no dialog. Track 4 (LFE) has all the dialog! And 5 and 6 also sound blank.
Now, if I set Audio Settings to 5.1 (first pair stereo, 3 and 4 dual mono, and last pair stereo) I can't hear the center track playback (I only have stereo speakers).
What am I doing wrong? Am I misunderstanding the export process in FCP? Should I just give up and try to trim the WAV tracks outside of FCP (if so, what do you recommend - Soundtrack perhaps?) and then drop them into Compressor?
    Many thanks
    Matt

    OK. I found the solution!
The six "audio outputs" do NOT automatically correspond to the tracks A1 ... A6. In fact, in my sequence (I don't know if this is default), A1 went to output 3, and the rest of the tracks went to output 4. Go figure.
To set the outputs correctly, you do have to set six outputs, dual mono and zero levels, which I did, but then right-click in each audio track (between the A1 label and the padlock icon) and set the output to the required file. So track 1 should go to output 1, track 2 to output 2, and so on.
My outputs now sound right - hooray! I'll mix it down and make a test DVD now.
Phew. Hope this helps someone else out.
One question that comes out of this: for a stereo mix, am I safe to export as a stereo mix in FCP? (Which is what I've been doing.) The FCP/Compressor process won't somehow be downmixing it twice? I don't see any way to pull two mono files into Compressor for a 2.0 mix. Thanks!

  • Pen Tool doesn't work on Video Tracks

    Hi there,
Today I woke up and found that video tracks in my timeline I could no longer just grab the pen tool, click, and change the levels (such as manually configuring a fade in or out dissolve)
There is just no line in the Video track where I can click and drag the levels up and down.
But the pen tool still works in audio tracks. I can raise lower my volume no problem and also manually configure sound transitions.
The only thing I can think of that I did was I used some h.264 video that had some frame blending in it (not sure what its called but were not every frame is Independent) but now when I go into any project including projects that I clearly used the pen tool before-- no go. The line for the level is just not there anywhere anymore.
Anyone know what it is or if there is a setting that allows you to fudge with the video levels in the timeline. Maybe I disabled it somehow and need to re-enable it?
    thanks!

I have just had the same problem thi fixed it for me:
Right click on the clip, go to show clip keyframes, then select opacity. the opacity keyframe line appeared after i did that.

  • How to lock audio to video track?

If I place a video track on the timeline, the audio comes along and is automatically locked with the video track. If I want to add a NEW audio track (recorded separately), there doesn't seem to be a way to lock that audio with the video track once it's synced. Or am I missing something?

Select the video & audio tracks and then do *Modify > Link*
And to double-protect the sync'ing, put a marker on each of the video & audio tracks at a common point (playhead at the same point in the timeline) so that if they ever get separated it will be easier to line them back up.

  • CS3, exporting to tape has problems with more than two video tracks

Well, not quite, but that's the best I could do in the subject line.
I record multiple performances and edit scenes from among them.  At times, this results in three or four video tracks on the timeline at once.  Each track is 100% opaque, so only the top Enabled track shows.  By Enabling or Disabling the various tracks, I can get the sequence I want.
And the sequence plays back fine in the Monitor window.  But when I try to Export it to tape, as soon as I get to such a place, the image hiccups around the same small number of frames (think of the video equivalent of an audio sample).
It's not the number of video tracks.  I can add Image Mattes on a third video track operating on the two below.  I can add any number of titles on different tracks.  They need to render, but then they export to tape perfectly.
What's different about three or more .avi tracks, even when they are Disabled?

Thanks, Jim, for your reply to this and other threads.  (Warning:  I had two other questions — been saving them up for awhile — that I'll post shortly.  It was too late already last night).
    > AVIs need to be "read" from the hard drive and can create a bottleneck depending on certain conditions.
Agreed, but unless there is partial opacity in the top Enabled track, only one track at a time is exported.  And in the cases I cited, the unused clips were Disabled.  No need for Premiere to read them at all.  I assume the state of each clip is part of the Project.
Ah well, I was only curious if I was missing something obvious, or perhaps it was a known bug that would be addressed.  Apparently the additional resources needed for tape export push Premiere over some edge.  Remember, I can watch (even Preview) the sequence in the Monitor window without seeing this artifact.
    > Render before exporting to tape is SOP.  Go with that.
Naturally.  And I do.  And if I didn't, Premiere would do it for me automatically before opening the Export to Tape window.
Thanks again.  On to the next thread.

  • Merge Video Tracks Shortcut

Dangnabbit, I have been trying to find the keyboard shortcut to merge video tracks in FCP 7.( I want to lower V2 and V3 into V1 on a significant sequence) I know it involves the "down arrow" but I'm at a loss.

No, actually I'm hoping to retain the individual clips. The Opt-C command makes them into a single clip. The post house I'm delivering to asked for a single video track but we need the cuts to remain seperate for the color correction process. Does that make sense? I'm a bit of a noob both at FCP and the forums.

  • Stretching tracks on the timeline using keyboard.

How can I stretch audio & video tracks on the timeline without scrolling at the scrollbars?
With other words is there a shortcut on the keyboard?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
If you mean, stretch or squeeze the timeline, then Stretch is APPLE , and Squeeze is APPLE . It stretches or squeezes the timeline around the position line. much easier for me.
    hope that helps,
    steve
