Adding arrows to Highlight film in imovie

I am creating a sports highlight film in i movie and need to be able to add arrows in certain clips. This will make it so that you can see which player is the one the viewer is supposed to be paying attention to. I just need to be able to put an arrow above a persons head for a short period of time. Thanks

Hi Julie,
It should work if you have followed Karsten's instructions to the letter. The key for me was to ensure that Project Properties was set to Crop for Initial Photo Placement, before inserting the .png Picture in Picture image. Also, don't click on any of the image settings in the Preview window (Fit, Crop or Ken Burns) when sizing and positioning the PIP, as that may destroy the transparency.
Note that setting Initial Photo Placement to Ken Burns also works, but the PIP pointer will show movement (as in a normal Ken Burns photo). The black background only appears when Fit in Frame is selected in Project Properties - at least that was my experience. I'm not sure why you are seeing a white background - perhaps Karsten has some ideas.

  • IMovie - add arrow to highlight video

I am trying to add arrows to highlight my daughter in a sports recruiting video. I saw the information on this topic:

I was able to add one arrow to my project by following Karsten's instructions. But, I am unable to add additional arrows into my project (separate clips). When I tried to add the 2nd arrow, the arrow doesn't show up on the screen, and then there is a pause created where I put the first arrow. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

  • Sports Highlight Films

I am making football highlight films and was wondering if anyone has had success in placing some type of a highlight feature on a specific player on the field ? Examples are an arrow or circle or square on the featured player only for a brief moment to help coaches to locate the player of their interest.
    Thank You

you can use any picture/illustration/symbol you like, as long it contains transparency and is saved as a .png
If you hesitate to invest 200$ in a more elaborated video-editor as FCPX, consider to purchase (40$) and teach yourself Motion5. you have to 'swap' videos (ex- and re-import clips), a lil' inconvenient, but you then have the perfect 'effects machine' for your videos, allowing automatic motion-tracking e.g. to stick a highlight/pointer to some running player, to paint animated graphics on the field etc etc etc.

  • Using Still images to create a stop motion film in imovie

Hi all, I'm trying to create a stop motion film in imovie using photo's I've taken with my camera, I've managed to put it all into the sequence I want, and even put background music on, but for some reason I can't stop imovie, panning in and out on individual photo's/clips of my film, so whereas when i flick through the photo's on my camera, it creates a pretty good stop motion film, but on movie it looks as though I've held everything by hand not using a tripod, making it jaunty and not playing well.
Does anyone know how to make it stop doing this? My friend hasn't been able to stop it from doing it either!
    Thanks

iMovie '08 installs with the Ken Burns Effects preference selected. When you add a photo, it is automatically added by turning it into a "still frame" sequence of frames at the default length with the KBE applied. To get rid of it make sure your "Project" aspect ratio matches the aspect of your photos. Then select the photo sequence in the "Project" window, select the "Crop" tool, and choose the "Fit" option in the preview window. This will get rid of the KBE. Now all you have to do is select any single frame in your "Project" sequence (or multiple frames if you want to "slow" down the final motion sequence in your project), split the sequence, and then discard the unwanted frames. (You could also use Command-C to temporally "store" your selected frame(s) to memory, discard the entire sequence and then use Command-V to paste the frame(s) in memory back into the project window at the proper location in your "timeline.")

  • Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in iMovie HD?

Is there a "pointer arrow" or similar feature in iMovie HD that can be used to highlight a specific object (in this case a person) in iMovie HD? My son is making a soccer highlight video of himself for college coaches, and we would like to, in some way, point him out in movie clips so coaches will know which player he is of all the players on the clip.

    Doug,
    You're using iMovie HD, right?
If that's the case Gee Three makes a plugin called Whiteboard that might be what you're looking for.
It's part of their Slick Volume 6. You'll have to buy the whole package to get it.
    http://www.geethree.com/slick/galleries/s6demopages/s6whiteboard2.html
There is also Movie Canvas from cf/x which can be purchased individually.

Note: These plugins will work with iMovie HD but not iMovie '08 or '09.

  • Creating a highlight film

I trying to put together my teams highlight film and I'm running into a little problems. After downloading my clips (avi) into my selected theme and previewing the contents, it doesn't play continuous. What am I doing wrong?

Coachcom is the program, the avi files had no problem when I placed it in iMovie. I'm not understanding why I'm not able to watch the entire highlight. It is only allowing me to see one clip at a time.

  • I produced a film in iMovie and send it to iDVD to make a DVD with a theme. When everything was ready it starts at my mac-computer. But at the TV the theme always comes at the end of the film not at the beginning. What have I to change, what´s wrong?

I produced a film in imovie and send it to idvd to make a dvd with a theme. After finishing all the dvd starts in my mac-computer and first comes the theme and then the film.
But when I start it with a dvd-recorder at tv first the film comes an at the end of the film the theme comes. What did I wrong? Where is my mistake?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

  • Sports highlight film

I have been asked to do a sports highlights film for someone.   I have a ton of game clips and photos.  So I want to transition between clips and pictures and put some information about the plays such as stats.  I also want to be able to accent the player that the clip is focusing on.  Maybe have a oval around him or something to make the focus be on him.  Then I want to add some background music. I have been messing with Premier and After Effects.  It seems I could use either one.  What is the best tool for this type of project?

What is the best tool for this type of project?
Both! While your setup sounds effects heavy, and you will use AE a lot, you wouldn't wanna build the rough timing in AE when in Premiere with its realtime support it would be more intuitive, especially when syncing to the sound, would you? Also, Premiere can do simple ovals/ vignettes. It has the leave Color and similar effects for highlights. It has a built-in color correction. It even has simple mask shapes. And of course it has a title tool, which isn't all too shabby, either. The point really is to work as efficiently as you can. You would only use AE, if you need something that you can't do in Premiere.

You burn the DVD selecting Burn in iDVD.

Of course this assumes that you actually have iDVD, as it is no longer included in new Macs running Lion:

  • Editing a film with IMOVIE and create a DVD memu with IDVD

    Dear all,
I edited a film with Imovie (with music, picture effects...). Now I try to create a DVD memu with IDV. For example, for a trip, I want to create a main menu (Australia) and sub menus (Sydney, Red center...). With this sub menu I want to attach some specifics sequences of my film edited with IMovie.
I export the film from Imovie but when I try to use it with IDVD I have only one file. So I cannot create a menu and chose different sequence.
Could you please explain to me how to obtain sequences edited on IDVD. I can see some sequences on IDVD but it is the uncut movie.

I had the same question about iMovie'08 a few days ago. You need to add the chapters outside iMovie'08. I found this freeware at http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html and it worked well for me.
Basically it opens your movie file exported from iMovie. You select manually the location of each chapter, then save the file again. When you drop this new file onto iDVD, the expected PLAY and Scene Selection buttons appear as expected. The instructions on the site are easy to follow.
Alternatively, there is a also a separate hack to edit the ProjectData file located inside the iDVD project package, but this did not work properly for me. I have not tried the GarageBand hint.

  • HELP: Making Highlight Film

    Hi guys,
I'm putting together a football highlight film and I was wondering if someone could help me with an editing technique.
Ever watch Sportscenter and they will make the screen dark except highlight one player with a circle before the play starts? I'm trying to do that and have no idea how. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks again for the help.

    Video 1: Source Footage
Video 2: Black Video or Black Color Matte with opacity set as desired.
Video 3: Shape you want to use as the spot shadow - make it in the titler and fill it with pure white.
Apply the track matte key to the black video. Select Video 3 as the matte source. Reverse the key.
The choice matte luma or matte alpha is up to you depending on the look you want.

  • 8mm film to IMovie

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get from 8mm film to IMovie?
I had 400 feet of 8mm transferred to DVD But IMovie won’t accept it. Says QuickTime can’t parse it.
Called Apple and asked if QuickTimePro might do the job. The answer was yes and 100 bucks later I had Toast 8 Titanium. Rather than send it back( I thought I’d ordered QuickTime Pro) I called Roxio and asked if Toast would convert the DVD to something IMovie could use. Again, the answer was yes.
When I used Toast it gave me a message that it couldn’t do the job because the DVD “might be copy protected”. A call to the DVD provider indicated that the DVD was copy protected ... even tho’ it is my film on the DVD.
Someone said to try MacTheRipper. I did and it did rip the movie from the DVD but it was still “copy protected”. Running that through Toast didn’t help.
On online site suggests (buying) a digital movie camera and recording my movies from the projected movies, then transferring that to my MAC. I’ll probably do that if I can’t find something simpler.
I still have over 7,000 feet of 8 and super 8 film to work with so, if anyone has a suggestion I’d very much appreciate it?
For info, I’m very much an amateur.
    IMAC G 5 (Intel) IMovie 6.03 QuickTime 7.0.3
and, I just downloaded all the info in IMovie comments re: help with deciding camcorder purchase .

    A fascinating project!
My older brother had 4 hours of (silent) 8mm cine film dating back to 1958-1980 (when he finally bought a video camera!). He wanted me to convert them to carefully edited DVDs, with music, sound effects, titles and so on. Like a madman I accepted the challenge! To make life easier he lives in Belgium and uses a PC!
The process, to cut this short, was as follows:
At considerable expense he had all the film transferred to four DVDs in some PC-only friendly mpeg codec, and sent them to me.
I used Streamclip and the Apple mpeg thingy (saving time by not loking it up) to convert these to Quicktime DV files. To make life even easier, the Belgian moron who did the conversion to DVDs had not done so in chronologal order!
That made for a very large QT file, which I imported into iMovie, and set about carving it into date order, re-exporting the various years to QT as individual files, and then importing into iMovie projects to edit.
Only a couple of months later I had it organised into three projects, each of an hour or so, beautifully edited with titles, transitions, music, sound effects and other bells and whistles, and burnt them to 3 DVDs. I was generally agreed that I deserved an Oscar for technical merit!
That was just to let you know that it can be done!
Your only real hurdle is the copy protection. Can you get a fresh set that is NOT copy protected?
But before you even start I heartily recommend that you update your OS and all software to the latest versions, particularly Quicktime, and make that Pro.
