Adding Birthdays to iCal

How do you use the birthday icon calendar within iCal?

Hi Steven,
You could try this application I wrote to fix similar issues.
As well as automatically syncing birthday dates from Address Book, Dates to iCal can sync anniversary and custom dates. It can set up to five alarms for each date in iCal and can also set different alarms for birthdays and anniversaries. It allows the option of only syncing from one Address Book group. This application also allows for the titles of the events sent to iCal to be modified to the user's preference.
See more about Dates to iCal here. Dates to iCal is shareware, there is a three week trial.
Best wishes

  • Incorrect birthdays in ical and contacts

I have two birthday fields showing in my contacts, one for the correct day and one for the day before. The incorrect field is the one that shows in my iCal calendar. I can't remember how or when I entered birthdays - it could have been way back when I was using Entourage for contacts. Can anyone help me to delete the incorrect field in my Contact Cards and get the correct field to show in my calendar? (Other than going through each individual contact) I am about to migrate everything over to a new Mac and would like to sort this out before I go ahead. It also shows on my calendar as 'little red gift with name and 9th birthday' Where could the 9th birthday bit have come from?? Many thanks.

Good question. I've just added birthdays to a number of my contacts specifically to see them in iCal except I'm often not sure of the birth year. If I put in the year 0001 iCal consistently shows the date two days early. What's up with that?

  • Delete Add Birthday to iCal Address Book plug-in

    Hi there,
When I was using Panther, I wanted birthday support in iCal, so I added the Add Birthday to iCal 1.1 Address Book plug-in. Now that I'm using Tiger's iCal, I no longer need the plug-in. How does one get rid of this plug-in? I went to the Address Book plug-Ins folder and deleted it, but the events still remain on the calender, meaning I have everyone's birthday duplicated twice (and in previous years as well, but who looks that far back?). Perhaps related are some files in ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book that I could delete but not knowing what they are, am very reluctant to do this. These files are ABPerson.skIndex, ABPerson.skIndexInverted and AB susbscribedPerson.skIndexInverted. Are these part of this plug-in's script and can I delete them without causing major new issues?
I found the plug-in on the MacUpdate website, but I couldn't find any instructions on how to delete this thing.
    Any ideas would be welcome.
    Many thanks,
    Michael Force

Deleting the plug-in is not going to clear the events that it has added.
Deleting those files in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook won't help; they are a normal part of AB. It won't hurt either - AB will simply rebuild its index files as needed.
If you put the events added by the old plug-in into a separate calendar you can simply delete that calendar. Otherwise, did the plug-in use some keyword in the events (birthday, perhaps?) that could be used to search for all the events?

  • Activating alarm of my contacts´ birthday on iCal

    Hi all,
I am able to see all my contact´s birthday on iCal. They all appear together under the category of subscriptions but I am unable to activate the alarm in none of them. I am only able to activate alarm on events under the category "ON MY MAC"
Does anyone know how to activate the alarm for the Address Book birthdays?
    Cheers,
    Dave

but my problem is that, for example i add a birthday, mmm lets say 14 of february 1986, and on another contact 13 of february 1986, and one is added and another is not, i've bought 2 iphones and its the same on both, ical displays some of my contacts, if it is that date or the same date with the year 2008, i don't get it, i think it has a limit, because from a day till now it has added no more, its like if it has reached it's limit... has anyone has the same problem?

  • Multiple Birthday in iCal since OSx Lion

I use OS X Lion in German.
Since my upgrade to Lion there are multiple entries of the birthday in iCal.
If I cancel the entry in my adress book there are still multiple birthday entries in iCal for this person.

Go into your iCloud account online and get into your calendar. Open one of the duplicated Birthdays. Close it. Do you get a server error? If not ... go into your second duplicated Birthday and select it. Do you get a server error? I can't remember off hand what the error message read but you've got the same problem I had. The village idiot at Apple had me delete them ... then said that I'd have to speak with an iCloud tecchie as it's their problem. Of course, he had no idea how to get the Birthdays back! Said Apple should have a backup from my initial entry into iCloud. Good luck. I've had three online appointments with the iCloud folks and they've NEVER returned a call!!

  • How do I eliminate duplicate birthdays in ical?

I'm using Snow Leopard, and iCal on my iPhone shows birthdays twice for the same contact.
(One with an icon that looks like a present, and the other a pink dot.)
    Things I've tried without success:
    * Deleting the birthday, closing iCal, then reopening and reentering the birthday.
    * Deleting the contact completely and reentering from scratch.
    * Entering the data from my iPhone first then synching with my MacBook. And vice versa.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Try this..... open Calendars/Preferences/General and uncheck Show Birthdays calendar. Wait a minute then recheck it and see if the dups go away.

Wow, what a silly easy fix! And I was all mentally prepared for a big pain in the you know what. Thanks!

  • Can I put birthdays in iCal 3.0.8 so that they automatically come up year after year?t

Can I put birthdays in iCal 3.0.8 so that they automatically come up year after year?

    Janet,

  • I haven't added events but am getting "This calendar is unreadable. No events have been added to your iCal calendar"

I recently started getting the message "This calendar is unreadable. No events have been added to your iCal calendar".  However, I typically add my events by typing them myself either on my MacBook Pro or my iPhone. I don't import from outside sources. I don't know if it's related or just coincidental that around the same time, events that I add to my MacBook Pro are not syncing to my iPhone, but the events added by iPhone seem to appear on my MacBook Pro and my MiniMac.  Is there a way to find the event that is being referenced in this error message??

    iPhone:
    Plug in your iPhone
Go to iTunes > Your iPhone > Info and ensure that calendars is not checked off to sync -- if you are using MobileMe to sync, this option should not be checked
    On both Macs:
1.) Go to Apple > System Preferences > MobileMe > Sync and remove the check Mark for calendars.  With the new MobileMe calendar system there is no need to have this checked.  Close the MobileMe window once this is complete.
2.) Open iCal and then go to iCal > Preferences > Accounts and remove the MobileMe account from here with the minus sign.
3.) Go to iCal > Quit iCal
4.) Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
5.) Open iCal and go to iCal > Preferences > Accounts
-- If the MobileMe Account is already here remove it again and then re-add it being very careful to use the correct name and password (for your 10.5 system follow these steps for re-adding: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4330)
-- If the MobileMe account is not already here, add it in.
iCal will download your calendars from the MobileMe server.  Watch and see if you get the error message.  If it completes the download (little spinning gear stops spinning next to the MobileMe calendar) go ahead and add a new uniquely named event to one of your MobileMe calendars on both computers and see if it syncs between.
    Let us know what happens.

  • "iCal can't read this calendar file. No events have been added to your iCal calendar."

How do I deal with this error message-"iCal can’t read this calendar file. No events have been added to your iCal calendar." ? .ics vs .vcs?
    Thanks

    Greetings,
What version of the Mac OS and what version of iCal are you running?
Are you using MobileMe calendars (or any other server based calendars like Google) in your iCal?
While you answer those questions you can try the following troubleshooting:
    1. First make an iCal backup:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal 1 at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
Once the computer is back up and running open iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

  • Birthdays in iCal, Need to  get them to Outlook and iPhone

I have family and friends Birthdays in iCal.
I need to get those birthdays to show up on my iPhone.
I also need to get those birthdays to show up in Outlook on my PC.
I am using MobileMe to sync calendar and contacts.
    Thanks for your help.

    Bump.
I have asked this question on a LOTS of forums, and nobody knows how to solve this issue.
    Anybody? Bueller?

  • Syncing birthdays in iCal with iPhone4

Before updating Snow Leopard to Lion, any birthdays I added to the mac's address book appeared in iCal and also in my iPhone calendar (known as subscriptions - appearing in both calendars as a parcel icon).
however, since updating to Lion, any more birthdays I now add to the mac's address book still appear in iCal, yet do not appear in my iPhone calendar.
I have tried everything I can think of, including "Replace information on this iPhone" prior to syncing, even setting up my iPhone as a new phone, and re-installing all purchased apps.
Today, I had 3 Apple store "Genii" unable to explain this, so I'm hoping for some real expert who can help.

I get this as well, this seems like a pretty bad bug in an ageing population!
If I set a date for a test address birthday to 03/07/1921 it shows in iCal (Leopard 10.5.7) but will not sync to the iPhone (3G/3.0). If I change this to say 02/07/2000 (so it will register as a change) it will sync fine?? No Mobile Me is involved, just a direct sync in iTunes
I've tried disabling the Birthday sync, clearing the iCal cache files, syncing to the iPhone, re-enabling the Birthdays and re-syncing. No Change.
After some testing I discovered that anyone who was born in 1932 or before will never sync to your iPhone using this method, at least in 2009
So if you are younger, you will never remember your Grandparents or maybe even your parents birthdays! If you are older, you'll never remember any of your friends birthdays either!
Pants I think and needs to be fixed ASAP.

  • Added calendar in iCal not synced to MobileMe

I moved a calendar from "On My Mac" to my MobileMe account group, using the export-import method. The new calendar, however, does not sync to MobileMe. I even tried an overwrite (bookmarks, calendars, contacts and keychains) from my Mac to MobileMe but the added calendar still did not appear in MobileMe.
I quit and relaunched iCal, which started an immediate sync. The new calendar promptly disappeared from iCal and I got a string of error messages (one for each entry in the new calendar, it seems) all ending with
    The server responded with
    “HTTP/1.1 409 Conflict”
and asking me to either "Go Offline" or "Revert to Server". It didn't seem to matter which one I selected – the error just kept cropping up. Eventually, I gave up and force quit iCal.
How can I add a new calendar to iCal that will sync with MobileMe?

    Derek,
I presume that this procedure represents exactly what you have tried to accomplish?
Import an iCal calendar or event
If you use iCal and want to add your iCal calendars and events to a MobileMe calendar, you can import them.
    Hide
    To import an iCal calendar:
Open iCal, and then select the iCal calendar you want to import into your MobileMe calendar.
Choose File > Export > Export.
Type a calendar name, choose a location from the Where pop-up menu, and click OK.You can store the exported file anywhere, and you can delete it after you finish importing it.
Choose File > New Calendar, and then choose a MobileMe calendar (by default, your MobileMe email address).
Type a calendar name (you can use the same name as the calendar you just exported), and press Return.
Choose File > Import > Import, select your exported iCal calendar, and then click Import.
Select the destination MobileMe calendar to which you want to add the imported iCal calendar, and then click OK.
Quit iCal and go to the Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and delete any/all files with "Cache" as a part of the name. Log out/in or restart and reattempt using the exact procedure which I copied from the MobileMe Help page.

  • Birthdays in iCal, Address Book, iPhone.  Why isn't Apple listening?

I have seen this complaint over and over again. I have sent countless feedback emails. Why is it that Apple just doesn't care about these VERY BASIC things? Their attention to detail is amazing, yet they choose to ignore things that scream incompetence....
Why is it that I can sync birthdays from my Address Book in to iCal. (Awesome feature by the way) Yet I cannot set a reminder of any kind. Does Apple just think this isn't important to people? Do they just not care? I run into these types of problems with almost every application they have. There will be those one or two little things in each that begs the questions: What are they thinking? How could they have missed this? Why aren't they listening to people? Another upgrade I paid for, and it's still not fixed?
Are any of you feeling this frustration?

That's great, thanks! Worked like a charm, and all my birthdays now have a reminder. Even tells me their age...
Frustrates me that I have to pay $6, when it should already have this functionality. However, it's otherwise a useless feature, unless I am reminded of the birthdays, so I'll pay the $6. It's more important to me to know when these birthdays occur.

  • Why can't I add Birthdays in iCal unless they come from Address Book !

I don't get it. I have a Birthdays calendar that seems to only allow birthdays to be created from the Address Book. If I go to iCal, and select the Birthdays calendar and then try to double click on a date, I just get the message that reads; "Read Only Calendar. You can not change events or ToDo in a read only calendar". I can select any other calendar and add an Birthday "event" that repeats every year. But, Come On !!!! How lame is that!
Who knows, maybe this is a problem with Address Book not allowing multiple Birthdays per entry (for example one email address per family but there are 4 people in that family). I do not intend to create a separate Address book entry for my friend /family young children just so I can see their Birthday's in iCal. That would be ugly.
Does anyone have a solution. Is there any hope that Apple would even consider this type of fix?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brad.

Thanks for the suggestion Austin, however that would still not solve the problem where Address Book only allows 1 Birthday entry per address book entry. My brother, his wife and 2 children all share 1 email address for their household. So, I only have 1 entry in Address book. I used the "+" button in Address book to add the wife and kids, just like you can do for many of the items when editing an address book entry. That is Except Birthday!
Oh well, I have given up on address book except to store basic info. For the birthdays, I decided to just creats "events" in iCal itself that repeat every year. No sence over complicating things I guess.

  • Problem about the birthdays in iCal

There are only part of the birthdays in my Address Book shown in my iCal
And also I have checked in the ~/Library/Calenders/ folder, I found the count of the .ics files in the Calenders/(the birthday branch folder)/ is equal with the people who have the birthday in my addressbook.
But when I use quicklook to check the ics files, the birthdays which can't be displayed in iCal is always displayed as the current day.
    It this a bug?

Take a look at this thread.
