Adding black to a colour

Photoshop has an item - Image>Adjustments>Selective Colour. You can choose a colour in the image and then add other colours to just that colour.
Is there an equivalent in Aperture 3?

I basically use the Exposure, Enhance, Highlights & Shadows and Edge Sharpen with the B&W brick used when converting.
You are better than I -  my liststarts with Straighten:  "Straighten,  Exposure, Enhance, Highlights & Shadows and Edge Sharpen"; if I do not use a tripod the first enhancement I have to use is straighten the horizon . My subject never will wait for me to get the shot right in the first place.
If I can't directly relate an adjustment in Aperture to something I did in the Darkroom I stay away from it!
And I rejoice, when I can do something in Aperture that I could not do in the darkroom
But my main reason to mention the "range" slider was, that I do not like to have to fall back on on external editors and plugins, that create quasi masters. I try to stay away from them if possible and rather try to test Aperture's limits.

  • Setting that makes black text look colour to a printer

A quick sorry for not being totally on the ball with indesign (cs4), so please help me with simple wording if you can help as I am not a professional.
I created a colour booklet which was fine until I was asked to do it all again but this time with the outside cover being colour and the rest of the pages inside black and white. so this I did by changing all text, boxes, strokes etc in to black (not rich black just 100%K) and ran the jpgs through Photoshop to make them greyscale, so far so good. At this stage everything was as I needed it to be so I hit the export and saved a PDF version and sent the file. Now for the reason for doing this. My friend soon realised that printing colour pages on their works professional multi function printing device is expensive, as colour pages are charged for at higher price per copy compared to Black and white by the machines operator. Now for the problem: The booklet is being printed with a colour front cover and the rest is in black and white as I wanted it to be, but as far as the printer is concerned it is seeing the black text as colour so is charging for it. Ouch.
Of the few things I know of preferences I have made sure that it is not set to output all blacks as rich black which I thought would be the cure but it would not seem to be. I am at a loss to understand the other output settings or other stuff which may be telling the printer to use the colour cartridges instead of just the black. Help Please
If it is of help I made and exported a single page file in the same way with just a greyscale jpg on it and that printed just fine with the printer charging it as a black and white page as it should so the problem realy is in how the text is being seen.

OK, so where we are at the moment.
over the holiday I had the reason to re-format my computer which isn't such a bad thing as I got to reload Indesign which should have corrected any problems in the indesign preferences ( I would Hope) and set everything to its default:
On opening indesign for the first time I changed the appearance of black setting to display and output all blacks accurately.
I went in to bridge and set the suit colour settings to Europe general purpose 2 and synchronised.
As it looks now: I made a new file where I typed one word in black (Helo)
I checked the typed word with the separations preview, turning off the black and cmyk and the typed word disappeared which is a good thing as this means there is no other colour present on the page except 100%K.
I saved and exported the file to PDF as Press Quality, (the only other box ticked on the general page was the optimise for fast web view which I left alone and unchanged) I left all other pages in the export area unchanged from the defaults produces by the Press Quality preset
I sent the file off and guess what: the printer saw it as colour and charged it as colour.

  • HP Photosmart 6510 e-All in One Series I want it to print off my PC in just Black and not Colour?

Please help! I have been in to settings for the printer on my Lap-top and can not find anywhere that will allow me to adjust to just printing in Black and White when I need it and not Colour all the time, which it is doing!

    Hi @Anna11,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!

  • How can I print in black when the colour cartridge is empty

    Hi,
I have an HP Photosmart 5510 that I use ONLY for simple black on white printing for work.  I have it set to black ink only but today, a wet and cold Sunday night when I really really need the d*mned thing to work because it's month end and I have to send copies of all my worksheets to head office, I get an error message to the effect that it won't allow me to print using the brand spankin' new original HP black cartridge until I buy some totally unwanted colour cartridges to keep it company.
Am I really being held to ransom like this?  Are Hewlitt Packard so short of cash that their corportate monolith will falter and fall if I don't buy expensive consumables whose only function is to print in colours I have no wish or need to use?
Am I really unable to use the black print facility on *MY* printer until I've fed yet more cash into the greedy maw of some US blue chip company?
If the answer to any of the above is yes then tomorrow evennig after work I shall have to go to the store where I bought my HP printer and very publically tell them were to shove it and why.  I shall seek out a new printer  from ANY MANUFACTURER OTHER THAN HP that allows me to print in black only and I shall make it a mission to spread the word.
Of course it's entirely possible that HP have a simple fix that will allow me to use black cartridges only in which case I shall be delighted to continue buying original HP black cartridges on a monthly basis.
On the other hand I do need a reply urgently because as I say, it's Sunday night and this problem has put me hours behind for work tomorrow as it is.
    Thanks  (I hope).
    Andrew

    Hi,
Firstly I'd like to say: I'm not working for any computer vendor, both hardware and software. From my understanding, the technology to make those inject printers dictates why we need all inks to print when we only need black.
    1. On some printers which ONLY use 2 ink cartridges (black & tri-color) we can print black only if the tri-color cartridge still has ink at least one color
    2. For many other printers which have individual color ink cartridges we need all of them to print even we only print black only. Printers may stop during the warming up process.
    3. For some printers, we can force them to print black only without ink in one color cartidge but this would more damage than good because this will shorten their lives.
One thing I've mentioned few times. Vendors (all of them) should allow users to SCAN without inks. But as mentioned above, printers may stop during the warming up process and first of all THEY ARE PRINTERS.
    Regards.

  • Adding "black" lines and text to image scans

I'm currently running Acrobat 9 Pro, under XP.
I scan documents as black-and-white PDF image files. They usually contain handwritten text. OCR is not applicable (at least, as far as I know there's little if anything that currently exists that's realistic for doing OCR on hand-written text).
I just leave them as images of the handwritten text, and that's generally okay for my purposes.
However, I often want to go in and "edit" a little bit of that handwritten text -- just a few words here and there -- either by sometimes crossing things out or sometimes deleting them (or whiting them out, or covering them with a white box), and adding a text box with new typed text either over or between existing handwritten text..
I know how to do most of that (well, I could use a few pointers on deleting or whiting out handwritten words), but I don't know how to make it all "black" so it tends to blend better with the color of the scan itself. Currently, lines I draw and text I enter appear red. How do I make them appear black so it blends better?
    Can I do that?
Or do I need to upgrade to be able to do that?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure we're on the same page. I already have no probelm drawing a white box to cover existing text (remember, this is all "images" since I'm just scanning in handwritten pages and not using OCR on them at all) and I can already draw a text frame to enter text into, just as I can already draw lines to cross things out that I don't want to just cover with a white box. I'm just looking for a way to make that text and those lines black instead of red (and for anything else that might make the process more elegant).
    Thanks.

  • Satellite L650-12P - Black and white colours on webcam

hello people i have a quick question about my laptop which is a Satellite L650-12P.
When I bought it, I am sure the webcam had colour but now it has turned black and white. I have tried various settings but cannot get the colour back. Why has this happened and what can I do?
    Someone please help.

    Hello
Usually the webcam shows more colours as just white and black.
I think its just something wrong with webcam settings. You should check this article from Toshiba about different webcam settings:

  • Qosmio G20-109: First tv channel in white and black, then in colour

    Hi,
I bought a Qosmio G20-109 in France one week ago.
It works perfectly except the TV.
When I launch the Tv set, the first channel is in white and black.
If I change the channel, the next ones are in colours.
    The drivers are ok;
Have you an idea to fix this problem ?
    Thanks a lot;
    CoolChris

    Hi Chris
Your problem is one country specific problem. It is not easy to say what the problem can be. The only thing that I can suggest you is Manual Channel Programming. Maybe you will able on this way to find a exact frequency of this channel.

  • Timelines have added "black" for no reason...

    Hi there,
I'm seriously struggling to understand as to why I'm suffering this problem.
The deal is I've a fairly large DVD9 project in production and out of the 35 timelines 3 of them have mysteriously added around 30-40 seconds of black to themselves.
The three timelines in question are made-up of a single PSD and an AIFF file - each of the AIFF files runs for approximately 60 seconds with the PSD running to the same length.
When previewed in Encore 2 all is well - but when written out the mysterious black appears. My regime of checking involves writing the project out to a folder and then using a software DVD player to check. In this instance I've tried both Nero ShowTime and connected the drive to my Mac and consequently also tried Apple's DVD Player and in both cases the black appears across all three timelines under both players.
As a trial and error exercise I also constructed the three AVI's in place of the PSD and AIFF combination but to no avail!
Does anybody have any clues as to what is going on and possibly how I may be able to cure it?
    Many thanks in advance.

For the record I've identified a fourth timeline in the project that also suffers the problem.
I've fortunately been able to rectify three out of the four by producing new timelines and dropping the same PDF & AIFF assets onto the new timelines and all is well.
The latest addition to this 'error', ie. timeline #4, runs for approx. 50 seconds and hangs around until around the 60 second marker before returning to its calling menu [ie., it plays around 10 seconds of black for no apprent reason].
Still none the wiser as to why this is the case... So, if anyone has any clues then please let me know!
Many thanks in advance once again.

  • Black and white colour profiles LR4 to CS6

Yesterday when I opened a black and white image from LR4 to Photoshop CS6 they opened as RGB-sRGB, today after doing an update to both photoshop and camera raw they now open up with an embedded profile mismatch of gray gamma with the option to change the working profile to dot gain 20%. I don't recall seeing these options before, looking in edit-colour settings I don't have any options to change to RGB.
I can of course change the settings to RGB in image-mode and also in edit-convert to profile but this would be a real pain to do this everytime I want to work with b/w.
Hope this all makes sense, I'm not an expert with all this colour profile stuff but have to submit all my files to camera club competitons in sRGB...
    help needed please...
    Thanks Stuart

i am having the exact same issue, except i noticed that if LR4 is set to send raw files to PS6 with a ProPhoto RGB color space then it will do so, whether the file has been made into B&W in LR or not. But when LR is set to send files to PS with AdobeRGB (1998) color space, it will send any raw files that were made B&W in LR with a gray gamma 2.2 profile instead. is this intentional or is it a bug?
i tend to use AdobeRGB (1998) for my color photos, because I find it converts colors much more easily when making prints or converting for web, whereas with ProPhoto, since it's showing you colors that can't be produced on a print or a web file, sometimes the colors will change drastically when printing or making web files. i'd like to keep it sending my files to PS with the AdobeRGB (1998) color space, but it seems really limiting to be editing my B&W photos in a gray color space

  • Help! Black printing from Colour cartridge

I just bought a HP Deskjet 6840 and I'm having trouble printing in black. When i do this, the black colour looks opaque/greyish. I tried changing the paper type in the printer preferences in illustrator, but for some reason it doesn't let me select "inkjet paper". I also found out after checking my ink levels that my printer prints black images from the colour cartridge. How can I change this? I'm totally confused!
    Thanx in advance.
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

It sounds like you may need to review the print settings beyond paper type. Make sure you are using an RGB color mode (File>Document Color Mode>RGB) & that you're not using any settings for CMYK or Process Color printing. You may also have to turn Color Management off in the Print dialog box.
If you're sure the settings are correct & still have a problem, HP should be able to help you.

  • Black, white and colour?

Hey I'm new to Elements 10, and was wondering how to produce an image that is in black and white but, say, have a flower in colour? Much help is needed please!!

You can also do it manually. You need to duplicate your color photo.  1. Open your color photo in PSE10 Full Edit
    2. On the Top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    3. On the top menu click Enhance >>Convert to Black & White >>OK
    4. If you can’t see the layers pallet to the right click Window >>Layers
    5. At the bottom of the layers pallet click add layer mask (the icon with a small circle)
    6. Make sure your foreground color is set to black then select the brush tool
    7. Click the mouse over the area where you wish to reveal color and use like an eraser to reveal the background below
    8. To correct errors switch the foreground color to white, then switch back to black and continue
N.B. if your brush is too big or too small you can use the square bracket keys to adjust the size up or down.
The smart brush tool involves making selections which can be more tricky than using the ordinary brush.

  • Change from black print to colour

HP Photosmart 7510 e-printer.  How do I switch from regular black/white text printing to using a colour option, because the 'pentagon' symbol blacktext  ink uses up very quickly, so whilst I wait for new supplies, I would like to print out in a colour (whichever shows the most ink available). There is the black 'bow-tie' symbol photo ink, but I am not sure if this black would 'take over' when the regular black '5th'  cartridge runs out. I have the printer set to fast draft to save on ink but it runs out too fast. Thanks

As long as the Color settings are not set the use "black ink only" in the color settings, the printer should be using color as it print to assist in creating a sharper black image. I think what  you are asking is if the printer can print in back up/reserve mode. that is where when a cartridge runs out, it can be removed and the other cartridge then continues to print. Your printer having individual ink cartridges (IIC) cannot do that. The printers that have that ability are the printers that just have the two cartridges which are the black and tri-color.
"For users who wish to print utilizing just black ink (despite the reduced print quality), many HP printers offer options. For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function." (Source:http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/en-019/articles/howInkIsUsed.html?cCode=us)
