Adding Blu-Ray Templates(?)

Does anyone know if there is a discussion already on how to add in additional templates for Blu-Ray menu (In the share destination action)?
I wanted to know if I can generate my own moving background file, and place it into a "folder" somewhere that will allow me to use it in FCPX. This is something that I do consistently in DVD Studio Pro, but I am looking to try it via the share destination for Blu-Ray.
Attemping to avoid purchasing another software package that will author a Blu-Ray for a single job that has come up.
Thanks all!

The share to BD is only for very basic disc burning.
To the best of my knowledge there is only the rubbish menu that comes with FCP X.
You would need some other app to produce BD or DVD menus.

  • Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5

Yesterday I spent more than 7 hours trying to create and burn a Blu-ray disc (actually an AVCHD disc on DVD-5 media) in both FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5. In every case, disc creation would go to completion of the encoding of the video and audio files, but when I was asked to insert a disk, I would do so and the disc would spin for about 30 seconds and then I would get the following error message: "There was an error burning your disc. The bit rate exceeded the maximum allowable." This message cannot be a correct description of the problem because I used the Blu-ray template that Apple provides in FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5 to create my disc. This template limits the bit rate to a maximum of 15 mbs and my video was only 15 minutes in length.
Additional information as follows: I am using an Early 2008 Mac Pro 8-core. I have Final Cut Studio 3 installed with all of the latest updates. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 (latest updates all installed),and I have experienced no other problems with FCP 7 or Compressor 3.5. My Mac Pro's internal superdrive is functioning fine, and in fact, I eventually took my FCP7 project and rendered it to a QT reference movie and used that in Adobe's Encore CS5 to burn and AVCHD disc using the same internal DVD burner on my Mac Pro and it worked perfectly.
I am seeking any suggestions for how to address the problem (whatever it is) that gives this error message. Would you recommend a reinstall of the applications in Final Cut Studio 3? Other suggestions? Has anyone seen this error message when trying to burn Blu-ray or AVCHD discs from FCP 7 or Compressor 3.5?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Tom

    Guys,
I am deeply appreciative of all of the suggestions and help received on this issue. I apologize for not responding sooner, but i have been looking at the problem described in this thread from numerous perspectives.
Jeremy, you may well have hit upon the solution, and I am trying your suggestion now. I did not realize that when you selected the Blu-ray template and directed it to a DVD burner that would make an AVCHD that you could alter the bit rate settings. I looked at the default bit rate that Apple sets when you select this template and I found that it allowed a maximum of slightly over 17 MBs and an average of 15 MBs. That is too high for an AVCHD disk, and thus the error message that I am getting may well be correct and not in error as I previously thought.
I have found that I prepared Blu-ray AVCHD disk as recently as late April with no problems so I don't know why I have not run into this problem of too high a bit rate before, but I had not. It may be that I used a Custom Present that I prepared and set my own bit rate for those disks.
In any case, I am trying a run now where I have set the bit rate to a maximum of 15 and an average of 13. We shall see if that still produces the error message. I shall post my results when I know them.
Again, thanks to all of you for your fine help.

  • FCStudio 7 - Burning to Blu Ray problems

I edit with FCS 7 and trying to burn to Blu Ray, however i keep getting a message 'internal file error, Qmaster file not found'?? Should be simple as 'file' then 'share' but not happening!! Its recognising the blu ray burner but wont let me 'share'. Any one know what the settings have to be????

I remember one thing , if you use Share with a QuickCluster you will receive a message like Video file from QMaster cant be found.
This is a bug from day one with Final Cut Studio 3, so if you need fast compression for Blu-Ray and dont have Matrox Compress HD you must export a Self Contain QuickTime file and bring-it in Compressor with a Blu-Ray Template and Job Action to burn a Blu-Ray.
Be carefull about Matrox Compress HD since for now this card remove the Chapters Markers with the actual drivers but it is a real time option best used with Toast 10 to bring back Chapters Markers even if it is at specific fix intervals.

  • Blu-ray discs and a HD dvd build

I have read in other posts that it does not appear that a HD DVD(as opposed to SD DVD in the DVD studio pro settings) program can be burned onto a Blu-ray for TV viewing. First of all if anyone knows that this has changed please speak up. Otherwise my question is is the HVDVD_TS folder that DVDSP creates for a HD program a compatible folder with Blu-ray players(or HDDVD players for that matter). Assuming one can eventually burn a video program onto a Blu-ray can the Blu-ray players read the HVDVD_TS the same way that the Apple DVDPlayer does or set top DVD players read the VIDEO_TS folder.
Also does anyone know if the Blu-ray players can read a BD-R at all.

There are other Win options too but as Adobe are adding Blu-ray support I'm pretty sure at NAB next month Apple will add support too... Plus if you look here:
    http://www.nab.org/nabshow/Conferences/sessiondetail.asp?id=1205649
It says tools for Next Gen authoring on Mac & Win... so lets hope dvdsp has a nice update and a solid SD Update. I'd like separate tools as always but we'll see what NAB brings.
Remember Premiere & Co. are Mac again so I'm sure Apple has some FCS sh*t for their a$$ to launch in April we may even get new macs with internal blu-ray burners if we are good boys and girls...

  • HELP!How to create HD disc that will play back in HD DVD or Blu-Ray player?

Footage comes from Panasonic HVX200 as DVCPRO HD 1080i60, all appropriate settings made in FCP5 to edit. Have already made SD DVD, whoopie.
Now client is interested in real HD version that they can play back on HD DVD or Blu-Ray set top unit. Of all my research, I've discovered little about how to make a "real" HD video disc. OSX doesn't support Blu-Ray burning, OK. What about HD DVD burning support? And what drive to purchase for this application?
I understand DVD Studio will allow me to author a disc with HD content...that I can burn onto DVD5. Useless to the client. Need to burn on either Blu-Ray or HD DVD media.
Aside from encoding in Compressor, what do I do when I need to make this HD disc happen? Compressor step seems easy enough to figure out. Just very unclear on how to burn out appropriate video disc.
    Thanks for your help.

    For Blu-Ray creation:
I'm curious if DVDit! works in parallels too, though it will certainly work in BootCamp. The question is what format should FCP/Compressor output to in order for DVDIt, etc. on BC or Parallels need in order to create the disc?
MPEG-2 and H.264 should work, but who knows?
In the meantime, I have HDV source footage that I edit. I print the final edit back to HDV for archiving, and burn a HD-DVD on a DL DVD+R red laser disc to show on my Toshiba HD-DVD player using DVDSP. It works, and I can get about 40 minutes of MPEG-2/HDV on there without transcoding at 1080i and it looks fantastic.
In the future, I hope to be able to dump the HDV final edit onto a Blu-Ray disc. I'm guessing Adobe Encore will be needed on the Mac for that.
The point here is there certainly are options that work. I do wish Apple added Blu-Ray burning capability.
There's still room for that, however... FCS 1 (and even now 2, with AVCHD support, albeit non-native) have histories of adding new support for codecs, etc. in free updates.

  • Blu-Ray bit rate (and other questions)

Hi, just getting ready to try out my new blu-ray burner and I had a couple quick questions regarding outputting via compressor, thanks for any help and advice:
    1) What's the recommended average and max bit rate assuming file size isn't an issue?
    2) Can I put multiple videos on one blu-ray? From what I can tell it's only one per disk...
    3) The blu-ray template wants audio and video from one source, correct? Or can I drop in a quicktime video and a separate audio track? (For instance, I have a surround sound mix that was done elsewhere while the video was edited and output from an Avid)
    4) Will compressor accept Avid DnxHD quicktimes?

I assume you mean to create a BD with Compressor.
    1. 34mbps, if I remember, is the max. Just let Compressor calculate the average and max. With a good source, an average above 24mbps won't make a difference of quality, in my opinion.
    2. No; you have to have a single movie all assembled in FCP first. But you can use chapter makers to mark multiple original movies.
    3. One source only, correct.
    4. I don't know.

I think you are the first one with this question. According notebook specification this notebook model is delivered with DVD Super Multi Drive (Double Layer) only.

  • .prel to Blu-ray

At last I've got my project 1½ hrs as m2t file on my hard drive.  All 6 days' videos together come in at 19.5 GB.  So far every segment of the whole I've done (PAL system of course, for the UK) has been at 1920x1080 25 fps (this is the main natural format of my DSLR).
I've followed Steve's strong recommendation and am going to burn to a folder on my HD and not attempt to burn direct to the Blu-ray.
My question is should I continue with the above procedure or change now to "Use for Exporting AVCHD"?   My TV set and tuner can play AVCHD Blu-ray.  (I'm talking here about publishing to a folder first on my HD, not direct to the Blu-ray burner.)
I know Steve in the Muvipix Guide refers to publishing as DV-AVI full quality video for pc's and on p 243 has a most useful sidebar with info about AVCHD, but is there any advantage to me now in going to AVCHD considering all my separate saves up to now on this project have been less high quality than that?
You write, Steve, that "m2t's are very similar to the video format produced by AVCHD recorders ..."
I don't suppose, to be honest, there'd be noticeable difference in my Blu-ray copy if I continued doing as I've done for each of the separate video clips before joining them all up in the final product?
Thanks for help ... Hope I've explained what I mean.  Help!!  On the final lap of this thing that's taken me just on 3 weeks!  I've enjoyed it and learned a lot, with the Guide on the table next to my desktop.
    Brian

    Good morning ATR and friends
Well it’s a bit of a long saga I’m afraid.  First the good news – all the 1½hr movie is there on the Blu-ray disk.  I’ve not yet played it all on the tuner connected to the TV set, but I ran through a lot of it quickly with the search facility and I think it’s all there and the quality is amazingly high.
The Samsung SE-506 Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer (to give it its full name) is indeed slim and light and rather slight (you certainly don’t want to treat this little machine carelessly) and, as you hinted, I could certainly do with a longer USB cable (I have longer ones but wanted to use the one supplied at least for the first go).   But it sat on its little corner pads happily enough on the pull-out tray on the pc station just level with one of the USB sockets in front of the pc.   Before I used it I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung site and that went quickly and smoothly.
Of course I’ve never burned to Blu-ray before so didn’t know what to expect.  The encoding took ages and ages (this is after the length of a standard commercial movie, I guess) so I opened up my laptop to do some work to let the desktop get on with it.   It got to the 99% mark and it then appeared to reach the dreaded just-hanging-there horror.  I waited and waited and (I didn’t count the time, but it was a small age) eventually I took courage and clicked Cancel.  Are you sure?, it asked me.  Yes, I said with more certainty than I felt.  And so it went through the whole process again.   Again – 99% just hanging there (seemingly).
This time I left it.   Eventually ...  the sound changed and I looked up to see it very very slowly beginning to burn.  1% ... long pause ...2% ... long pause, so I thought OK we’re in for the long haul.  I went back to the laptop.  I looked up ... 2% ...   Went back to work.  Then to my astonishment, the Samsung door opened, and the message on PE11 said the movie was burned.  So it went from 2% to completion in about 2 minutes.  Is this the normal thing?  My DVDs take longer than that to burn.
Took it out and popped it in the pc drive.  Windows came up – Nothing to play contents with.   Well, what had happened is that the Samsung came with a whole load of software, as things tend to.  All of it Cyberlink, which in various ways seemed to really take over control of my computer.  Bizarrely, the stuff seemed to install itself twice as if it was on some neverending loop and when it began to ask me for a third time if I really wanted to uninstall in order to install the same thing again, I twigged and stopped it.
Did I really need Power DVD 10 + Power2Go + Power Producer + PowerBackup as well as InstantBurn (which seems a very dodgy thing to me) and LabelPrint (I always just use a pen for writing on disks and ordinary ink for the CD case!).   My pc had already come with a (now old) PowerDVD which I never use.  So I uninstalled everything from the Samsung DVD.
So when I came to try to play the Blu-ray disk, it seemed I’d nothing to play it with!   My VLC (Videolan) which I use for pretty much everything didn’t recognise anything on the disk and said it couldn’t play it.  So I opened up Windows Media Player which promptly reported that the disk was empty.   Panic stations.
So at 3-30 in the morning I crept downstairs to the living room, popped the disk into the player, and marvel of marvels, there it was, all there!
But the other weird thing is that although Windows couldn’t play the disk, it told me that (this is an approximation from memory) the disk’s contents were something under 10GB, I think about nine-point-something, whereas before burning I’d checked and the full video (according to PE11) was to be 19.5 GB.  Unless at 4 am I was a bit bleary-eyed by then, and missed a ‘1’ before the ‘9’.  I’ll check it later.
I’m afraid I’ve not finished yet.   I thought I’d followed all Steve’s instructions in the book for making menus.   I chose one of the General templates, one that actually has two frames to it, a sort of diptych I suppose.   I laboriously filled in the details, added my own background photo, made sure (I thought) that all the text fitted inside the TV-zone frames, but whatever I did, it wasn’t completely right.   Now I confess I don’t watch much TV and rarely use the thing to play DVDs etc on the TV, so I’ll have to ask my wife who knows the gadget better than me, and will also consult the handbook – but although I could get the menus to work, I couldn’t get back to the menu page after stopping in mid-play.  This isn’t a problem for this forum of course, so I wont digress further.   But what I think is a problem for me is that the second of the diptych frames didn’t seem to appear at all, and my text in one of the lines over-ran hopelessly, and the arrows pointing to each marker were very small on the TV screen.
So it’s back to the drawing board, I’m afraid.   But what I found on my computer, having forgotten that I’d downloaded and saved it, was a Steve Grisetti video (either from his Lynda.com series or from the Muvipix site, I forget) on Creating Menus, which of course I should have watched before starting work (even tho’ I followed the book, I thought, hmm...)
Well that’s quite enough from me for a while, sorry to go on at such length.   Hoping for some friendly criticisms and advice as ever!
    all best
    Brian

  • Create blu-ray menu for concert from scratch

    Hi all,
I downloaded the Premiere Elements 11 trial yesterday and am evaluating it for purchase.
My first project is a blu-ray of a concert.  I am on Windows 7 64bit.
    Project settings are:
    AVCHD 720p square pixel
    1280x720
    29.97fps
    30fps drop-frame timecode
I want to create a simple menu for blu-ray (ie an HD menu) that has a still background and simple text buttons.  The top menu would just have "play concert" and "track selection" text only buttons.  The "track selection" button would lead to a page with all the track names as buttons that link to the scene markers for each track.  That's it.
I only see pre-installed templates and none of them have the "HD" designation in the top right hand corner.  How do I go about achieving the menu that I want?
    Thanks, Ben

Along with Steve's suggestions, one can customize the existing PrE Menu Sets, just relying on the "background" Menu Set structure, and adding Still Images, plus doing limited customization to the Text, etc.
To create PrE Menu Sets (like those on Muvipix), one needs two things:
Photoshop (Photoshop Elements has one limitation - it cannot create Layer Sets, unless that has been added to PSE, as of version 11), and then knowledge of what goes into a PrE Menu Set. Because much of the authoring functions in PrE are semi-automatic, the Menu Sets are very involved. Though I create Menus for Adobe Encore, from scratch in Photoshop, I still need one of the Library PrE Menu Sets handy, to get all of those semi-automatic conventions in front of me - lot of stuff required there.
If you cannot customize an existing PrE Menu Set, or find similar at Muvipix, then we can offer some links, that will be helpful, but I strongly recommend that one spend a day, doing a study of the Library Menu Sets, and still having one handy, for the specifics, required. It also helps, if one understands the naming and structural conventions of DVD Menus, and then especially PrE Menu Sets.
Good luck, and let us know if you can find what you need, or something close, that you can customize.

  • Export to Blu-ray from Final Cut Pro 7 with LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray

    Hi all
I've got an iMac with Snow Leopard and I'm editing HD video in Final Cut Pro 7. I've created AVCHD discs on DVD to play in my Blu-ray player but now I want to create Blu-rays that will play in a regular Blu-ray player.
Has anyone got any experience of using the LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray Re-Writer with FCP 7? I've checked other posts and it seems one user has had success with an earlier LG Model.
Basically if I connect this drive and use the Final Cut Blu-ray export option in share, will I be able to burn a playable Blu-ray?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi I have one of those drives too .. I use FCP to edit export the movie using 'current settings' and then import that movie Compressor .. alternative I also have Toast with the Blu-Ray plugin .. it gives a nice menu template and works well. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/plugin/overview.html
