Adding borders and edge effects to images

I want to create some nice borders and edge effects for some images in PS. I don't want to take the time to experiment and do it manually. I thought I had some Actions or that there was a feature native in PS that did this, but I can't seem to find it. I'm using CS4 on Mac 10.5.8.
Can anyone point me to some good Actions that give some nice border effects, or recommend a favorite plugin that has a lot of different options and flexibility?

Flickering after adding shadow and highlight effect

I seem to be getting a flicker, in any shot that has had the shadow and highlight effect added. It is as if premiere flashes from an uneffected frame and to a frame after "correcting" with shadow and highlight. Sometimes hardly noticeable until I have "make movie" and play it as an avi.

This thread isn't long, and clearly in the several posts above, we discuss that the bug (which Adobe refuses to fix after years of bug reports) occurs regardless of whether automatic or manual control is being used. So you are not offering a solution; Adobe needs to do that.

In After Effects CC, images added to listboxes fail to appear at first

Given a simple listbox with images, created like so:

In After Effects CC, loading this script as a ScriptUI Panel (at least on OSX) initially shows no images, until some interface interaction is made (clicking on listbox, showing about box, sometimes switching apps, etc.).
Is there a way to get these images to show correctly on launch of the script? Anything I add to the script, including phantom buttons with notify("onClick") tricks, seems to run while the script is still being created (even if added after the panel being built/shown), and the initial "no-image" listbox is shown. I'm also curious to know if this behavior is the same on Windows, and if anyone can test this it would be great.

Appears to be a bug with CC, I even rewrote a test script using a different coding approach. I've filed bug reports before for listbox. I've gotten times where a multi-column list content will overlap from column to column. It fixes itself once you click on the listbox or attempt to resize a column.

How do I get more effects in my action box? I am only showing a few, like BOTTOM BORDERS, LOSE WEIGHT AND SPECIAL EFFECTS. That is all. The turotials I've checked into all show a long list of effects in the actions box. If anyone could help, I appreciate

When I have watched the tutorials, they are showing a long list of effects in the action box. (with a side space bar) I do not. When I have clicked on the little arrow at top, and clicked "Load Actions", a box comes up, but it is blank,saying "no items match your search". I'm lost! Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above. Select the new disk on the list at the left. Click the erase tab. Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice. Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase. You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition. Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them. So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose. You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

I have the Photoshop Elements 11 and when I use the stamp effect the image becomes totally black. It used to have my line drawing in white, now, just a black image. I need the stamp effect. also, most other effects simply crash the program.

Which operating system are you using?
Some filters like Filter>Sketch>Stamp need to have two different colors for the Foreground and Background set in the toolbox.
Press the D key to set the default toolbox color swatches to Black and White and then try the Stamp filter.
If your using mac os x 10.9 or 10.10, then some of the filters under Filter>Sketch will crash pse 11
They are Filter>Sketch>Comic, Graphic Novel and Pen and Ink
Otherwise resetting the pse11 editor preferences might resolve the crashing.
Go to Photoshop Elements Editor(Edit)>General, click on Reset Preferences on Next Launch and then restart the pse 11 editor

When you say "could not be opened"- what are you referring to? A double click of the mouse should view the clicked image in Loupe view- the same as pressing [E] on the keyboard for an enlarged view. (And a second double-click will take you back to library grid view.)
To "open" an image in the Development module requires you to select the image then press [D] or click on the [Develop] button.
When you say "could not be ...moved" -what are you referring to? Are you trying to move an image file from its place in a folder to another folder? Are you just wanting it in a collection? When you drag an image to a collection you are only placing a link to the image in the collection- not actually moving any file. The image will stay exactly where it is in its original folder and will remain as a thumbnail preview in the Library Grid view.
Are you having any "mouse" problems that may be changing its actions in LR ?
Do you see an exclamation mark on any image borders ?

Looking for cool Lightroom Edge Effects

Anyone know of a place where I can buy or download some cool Lightroom edge effect presets? I'm interested in giving some of my photos a distressed edge (border), or the sort of borders you get in iPhone apps like Hipstamatic, that give images a vintage look. I'm happy to buy, just haven't found them anywhere yet. Similar to the existing LR preset "Edge Effects - Rounded Corners" but more creative and "edgy" (pardon the pun). I'm using LR 3...

Since you're brand-new here, there's a VERY crucial question to ask: have you ever used After Effects before?
The reason: it's not the kind of application you use for a couple of tricks with and expect things to turn out right the first time. It takes a good knowledge of the AE basics to make it do what you want.
So how do you get the basics? You go here.
...and if you need this animation in a big hurry, you might want to have a Plan B ready to go.

Arrange > Group

Insert a rectangular shape.
Go to Inspector > Graphic
define the fill color
Stroke > Picure Frame
adjust the width and the color
Arrange > Send object to the background
From time to time, it's useful to look in the Help or in the PDF Users Guide.

Pan and Zoom Effect, which PE version introduced it?

I like my PE 3.0 but it does not seem to offer the Pan and Zoom effect. Or am I just not seeing it. Does anyone know which later version introduced it? I know 8.0 has it, but when did it come along? The bundled version of Photoshop 5.0 it came with has a pan slide show, just discovered it.
Also, I am familiar with keyframes, would this be helpful with 3.0 pan? or do I need a newer version. Any tutorials good for this?

Pan & Zoom is available in all versions that offer Keyframing on the fixed Effects>Motion>Scale (Zoom) and Motion>Position (Pan). What might have been introduced would be Presets to do those with "one button." Do not know when those came into being. I do not use them in PrE 4, and would not in PrE 8, or 9, as I want control, and also the ability to determine what MY subject is, in an image. No amount of AI can do that for me, so a simple Preset stands about a zero chance of doing exactly what I want.
At some point, PSE added the automatic Random Pan & Zoom. Again, were I doing a slideshow in it, I would not apply such, as i would Keyframe Motion>Position and Motion>Scale in PrE.
In PrE 3, I feel strongly that you have the Effects Control Panel (accessed via Edit Effects for a Clip/still), and the ability to Keyframe both Motion>Scale and Motion>Position. This allows one adjust the parameters for those Effects over time, i.e. create a Zoom, and create a Pan. Other than the fact that you do these by hand, by eye and by mind, but with ultimate control, you have the features - just not automatically applied via a single button.

Using Batch in Bridge for Ad Ops (adding borders)

Hi,
I need to accomplish a pretty specialized task in Bridge.
Some of my work is in banner ad trafficking. Frequently, we will receive creative from clients without borders and need to add them in order to get approved by the major exchanges.
Since this is something I do over and over again, I'd like to automate it.
So far, I've created an action that will effectively add the border. I use Bridge to open the client's creative asset folder, select all the images and select Batch under Photoshop in the tools menu. I'm able to overwrite the existing files (no matter what starting directory they are in) but hitting "Override Save as..." option.
Here's where I am hitting snags.
The action should create a new directory in the client's folder (this directory will be different everytime) named "Edited Creative", so the originals are preserved. The PSDs should be saved in this directory.
The action should not only save the images (JPG) using Export (Save for Web...), I'd like to leverage the tool within this dialog that picks the appropriate optimization settings to get to a particular file size (by clicking the flyout in the Save for Web... dialog, you can choose "Optimize for File Size"). The creative needs to be less than 35kb, but I'd like to optimize each image as high as possible while staying within this file size. The JPGs should be within the "Edited Creative" folder in the client's folder
Anyone have any ideas? I've gotten half way there, but can't figure out the last pieces....

You should be able to create the 'Edited Creative' folder when you browse for the destination folder.
As far as I know, no one has been able to script "Optimize for File Size". It's not in the scripting DOM and scriptlistner( or action ) does not record the file size value only the setting used to get that one image to that size.
"Optimize for File Size" is an often requested script feature. Others have tried to loop resaving the doc with different setting until the size is right but that is very slow and still often doesn't give the same file size.

How to simulate the underwater and fire effect with Java3D

You'll have to describe what effect you are looking for. Are you trying to model the surface of the water or do you want your scene to appear to be under the water? A surface can be done similar to a terrain but with transparency added to the geometry. Underwater effects would be tough if you want to distort the view of the scene. You might be able to get away with changing the field of view to be wider or rendering each frame yourself.
For fire effects, are you looking for animated flames? If so there are a few options.
1. Find a series of images of a fire and apply them to an OrientedShape3D through animation. This would be easiest.
2. Build a particle system with fuzzy objects (procedural texturing). This would be much harder but more realistic.

Hello. I am looking to add a rounded corner box with a dropshadow effect behind a HTML email message. I got it working great in gmail with four corner images and repeating background slice for the sides and top and bottom. The problem is background images do not work in Hotmail and a few other email clients. Anyone have any suggestions as how to achieve this? Thanks.

Ah, "the client wants it". That factor has led to more bad design decisions over the years than I can count.
The client needs to understand that there are literally hundreds of millions of email users with hundreds of millions of different settings for their accounts, and there is now way imaginable in heaven or on earth to FORCE all desired styling and content to appear in every possible viewer's email when they open it. On a local network maybe, but not the entire world. So, ultimately they're asking you to design something that far less than tenth of one percent of possible recipients may (not will, but may) ever see.
It's a bit like asking you to paint an elaborate mural inside a closet and then they lock the door and break the key off in the knob. You did a great job on it but no one will ever see it.
I don't work for Microsoft or Google, or Yahoo or Opera (or any of the hundreds of thousands of proprietary hosted email services out there), so I couldn't venture even a wild a guess as to how to force their servers to display content for a single insistent client somewhere.
I'm sure this has been tried unsuccessfully many many times in the past, but I seriously doubt it's been "done" universally. I've seen a few dozen people here who've tried it and tried it, and eventually gave up because they realized just what I just laid out... was true.
If the client still insists, politely explain to them that they are defeating their purpose in adding all the fancy effects because of the minute number of people who will ever see them. Invisibility is not the purpose of promotion, and if promotion is the purpose of the emails, making them invisible won't help.

The effect looks to be a combination of a "vignette" effect, that is to say, the darkening of the borders of the image in order to highlight the central focus. The extremely easy way to achieve this effect is by making an eliptical selection that is centered on your subject (in this case the woman). Next, invert your selection and then apply feathering to the selection (variable depending on your image size) and then fill the selection with your background color.
The (slightly) more complex method involves creating a mask of your eliptical selection so that you can apply the effect variably without destroying the original background layer.
There also seems to be a "glow" effect around the woman, but that could be an illusion based on contract from the vignette effect. If it is a glow, it's a matter of masking of the woman (or other subject) and creating a layer mask and applying a layer-effect outside glow to the layermask with a Lighten layer mode (which will render the mask invisible, yet apply the glow to the layer below).

Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5 Lagging Horribly with Dynamic Link

I just bought a brand new computer. It is a beast
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i7-980 6 cores with HT = 12 CPU cores
Nvidia GTX 570HD 1280mb 328 bit
120gb SSD sata 3
600 gb Velociraptor drive 10000rpm
8gb DDR3 1866MHZ ram
So you would think I would get no lag. But for some reason, when I edit in premier pro or after effects, especially when I use dynamic link with premiere and after effects. It lags realllllly badly. I am talking about 5fps and I have to pause and wait like 20 secs then hit play again to get 5 secs of smoothness and then the laggyness returns. I am not even using heavy footage. It is footage off of a Canon 5D Mark II h.264. I tried messing around with all the settings but I cannot get anywhere. Anyone know what the problem might be? I don't have any other programs running since I just installed these. This lag is really holding me back and I cannot edit properly because of it.

Your memory is ill configured, since you are using it in dual channel mode instead of triple channel mode and 8 MB is about bare minimum. You would be better off if you were to increase memory to 24 GB. Secondly, your disk configuration is the absolute minimum requirement, so adding a couple of disks will help performance as well.

You could try the PPBM5 Benchmark to see how well your setup performs.
