  • Windows Media Player keeping Automatic Maintenance window/Windows Updates from doing auto-restart

I have a system that is connected to a domain, and it runs a video playlist in Windows Media Player for digital signage upon bootup (and auto-login).  WMP is set to loop the videos over and over again, but it also is preventing automatic updates from
installing and/or auto-restarting at 3:00AM in the morning (and yes, the system power management is set to keep the computer on all the time).
    How can I fix this?
I have a GPO set up to install updates and restart automatically (option 4).  I tried the GPO option to use the Windows 8 maintenance window to install updates, and also tried turning that option off and just using a 3:00AM restart period.  Neither
option seems to work, so it looks like Windows Media Player is preventing an auto-restart to finish the update installation.  Is there any way around this, so that Windows Media Player doesn't stop Windows Updates from doing its job?  I don't care
if that means the video stops playing because it just starts up again on the next bootup.
I looked at the WMP GPO's and the only option that sounds like it's related is the option to turn on or off the auto-updating of media info for WMP, but it has nothing to do with what I'm trying to accomplish.  If I missed something, let me know.
If there is some other way to accomplish this, such as associating and launching the playlist file with the Xbox Videos app, I would be fine with that, but I need it to loop the playlist continually (I also use the Shuffle option
in WMP - ***see note below for another question).  I still want the system to automatically install updates and reboot on a regular schedule despite the video playing in the foreground.
***Side question: is there any way to turn Repeat and Shuffle options on in WMP without having to load the GUI (for scripting a playlist)?
Just FYI: this system is actually using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise (from a MAPS account), but it isn't customized aside from not having the standard WinRT apps from a stock Win 8.1 install loaded - it is a stock install from the ISO.
From what I understand, it is the same as Windows 8.1 Enterprise, except that it is only licensed to be used as an "appliance" machine for a single role - which it is.  So I'm assuming that there are no actual differences from a "regular"
Windows 8.1 SKU that would cause this issue.  If I am completely mistaken about this, please notify me on it.  The reason I'm making this statement is in case there are any differences in Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise that I am not aware of.
Otherwise, I welcome any assistance that would target a "regular" version of 8.1 Enterprise.  NOTE:  Someone said to post this into the Windows Embedded forum, but the only one that exists is the one for POSready - and this is HARDLY the
POSready version of Windows Embedded that I'm using.

    Hi,
Did you use the policy Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Always automatically restart at the scheduled time?
I noticed an description "restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" policy is enabled, then this policy has no effect." it means if system installed some updates which unneeds restart computer, this policy would has no effect.
In my opinion, your problem should not caused by WMP setting. please check your installed updates whether they need restart computer.
In addition, Power Managment in Control Panel also can prevent the schedule task running.
    Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings\Sleep\Allow wake timers
Please make sure this option is enable.

  • How can I consolidate my itunes music with Windows Media Player?

How can I consolidate my itunes music with Windows Media Player?

Ah, did you move your media files by hand? Often doing so will have broken the links from iTunes to them.
The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Problem with Windows media player on MAC

I got a new macbook and installed windows vista. When I wanted to play CDs on windows media player there comes a message"windows media player have aproblem..." and the window closes. I contacted the Microsoft support system and they said that the it is the problem with the mac that the Macbook is not really supporting some of the files and they told me to contact the Apple support and even then they could not solve the problem. I returned the first laptop and got a new Macbook again and even the second macbook has the same problem. Could anmy one tell me why this is happening? If your a Macbook user with windows, did you notice this kind of similar problem? Please do let me know. Thanking you.

If you have the current version of Microsoft Windows Media Player for Mac installed, there is little you can do. The WMPFM is not kept as current as the Windows version (IMO, I think MS hates Apple - and this is intentional).

  • Windows Media Player no sound while playing a avi file in server and client connection using TCP/IP connection

    Hello there
I have a problem with my windows media player while using server and client connection by using TCP/IP connection. So when I play a video using Windows Media Player in LabVIew there isn't any sound come out but when I'm playing a video by a Windows Media Player only the sound will come out. Can you help me solve this problem?
I also upload the vi as the reference.

    Hi ican,
I was looking at your VI's but I cannot seem to pinpoint exactly where you are using Windows Media Player.  In order to more quickly assist you, could you please recreate this issue more concisely in a smaller set of VIs.  Also, were you able to get sound when you did not use the TCP/IP connection and simply played the files in LabVIEW?
I noticed in a few places that you were using the Play Sound File.VI from the Graphics and Sounds palette.  Is that what you are refering to?  I noticed there that the file path that you have designated for the song is simply the song title.  Instead, this should be a path to where the song is located on your computer.
Also, if you are planning on using Windows Media Player, have you considered using the ActiveX commands for Windows Media Player?  Here are a few examples if you are unfamiliar with this functionality.
    Example 1 and Example 2.
    I hope this helps!

  • Button won't work on Windows Media Player?

I made a DVD a week ago using DVD Studio Pro. During the videos, I placed a button over video that linked to the menu.
I've used it on every device I own: Mac, PC (Windows Media Player, VLC, RealPlayer), DVD Player, Blu-ray Player. It worked on all of those devices, however: I recently tested it on someone elses Windows Media Player and the buttons did not work.
Is this an issue with that particular WMP, or my DVD? If so, how can I fix it?
    Much Appreciated,
    Greg
    Daliwood Formula

It sounds like you authored correctly and did your part to QA the DVD, so I'm guessing that it's something to do with a specific  WMP implementation. Of course, there's no way to be certain from here, but that's the way the smart money would likely bet.

  • Why Does Adobe Reader download button  launch windows Media Player?

I want to download an owners manual for my dishwasher. When I go to the mfg. site and locate the PDF file and click it to 'run' or 'save' (to desktop), Windows Media Player  launches. What's going on?? Please respond soon and thanks. Steve   Win 7, IE 10, Reader 11

That sounds like your file association for .pdf files is hosed; you need to assign it to Adobe Reader instead of Media Player: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-default-programs#1TC=windows-7

  • Button in captivate to click wmv url to open in windows media player streaming windows xp

    Hello,
I'm trying to insert a link to a button in one of the slides in captivate 7 (www.blahblahblah.com/filename.wmv). When user clicks on the button, the video opens as streaming video in windows media player.
This works in Windows 7 and IE 8 or 9. It is not working for Windows XP and IE 8. when the user clicks on the button, instead of streaming, it downloads the video from url.
Half of our company employees still are on windows xp and I am trying to troubleshoot it. Please let me know if you need more information.
    Please advise...Thanks, John

Don't launch the WMV file directly from the link.
You need to get your HTM file to point to a .WVX file that then launches the WMV file.
Google for information on the Microsoft website about launching WMV files correctly.

  • MDT - Need Help Adding Windows Media Player to Specific Deployments

I'm using MDT in conjunction with WDS to deploy Windows 7 in my organization. I use the MDT Computers database to profile machines. (i.e. select certain applications to be installed to specific machines based on MAC address.) In my reference images I have
removed all the components under Media Features, as most users do not need them. However, some users need Windows Media Player.
In the Computers Database properties, under the Details section, I noticed a property called OSFeatures. I tried setting the value to MediaPlayback,WindowsMediaPlayer and just WindowsMediaPlayer, but Windows Media Player does not get installed. Am I not
    entering the value correctly?
My goal is to be able to add Windows Media Player to specific machines.
    Thanks in advance

Is the OSFeatures property not able to add WMP? The reason why I want to use it is because when I profile machines that need WMP, I can add the option to have WMP added just for that machine.
If I can't use OSFeatures to install WMP, how can I add it back on a per-machine basis?

  • MS Windows Media player Firefox plugin 1.0.0.8 is installed still after upgrade from FF 3.5. to FF4, but it does not work anymore on Windows 7. The player buttons doesn´t show up. However, it works on WinXP after the same upgrade.

    Every time Firefox opened

    Hi Lindsay.
The [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media_Player MozillaZine "Windows Media Player" KB doc] explains installation and troubleshooting in-depth including a link to test the plugin, which should help you solve this problem.
Do note - if your Windows 7 OS is a 64-bit version, make sure that the plugin actually ends up in the Mozilla Firefox plugin folder (default '''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\'''). There are reports of the plugin (or actually Firefox) ending up in the wrong folder. 64-bit Windows systems has 2 Program Folder locations - "Program Files" for 64-bit applications, and "Program Files (x86)" for 32-bit applications.
Also note that the Windows Media Player is required to use the plugin - if WMP has been uninstalled from the Windows Control Panel, the plugin will not work.
Please let us know how above works out, and if we can be of further assistance. Detailed feedback is appreciated and helps us to help you better, plus enables us to better help more users with similar problems.

  • Can't download plug in for windows media player. Have used download site and it says it worked, but plug in is not showing up on my list of plug ins.

I tried to hear a conference call on a website. Got a message, needed windows media plug in. Checked my plug ins, no windows media. Read tutorial on firefox support. Clicked on download. Got a window that asked for repair or change. Tried repair, then change. Need better directions on how to finish download. Got message download successful, but after closing firefox and reopening, still no plug in for windows media in list of plug ins. Went to site and could not hear conference.
Read support forum. Message about using about:config. Tried this, typed in about: config in start menu, but didn't see anything that looked like I could change to true like message said.
solved by opening internet explorer and going to website and listening to conference call on windows media player. There was a message saying click here if you want to enable media player. Did so, heard conference.
Tried using chrome. Got to hear conference yesterday. Today, there was same message about needing plug in when I tried to follow instructions to get plug in, it was as confusing and useless as firefox. The bottom line is I tried to do everything set forth in firefox's forum suggestions and can't get the windown media plug in to show up in my list of plug ins and can't hear conference calls on firefox.
Chrome did say they were working on getting plug in available at chrome store.
I agree with comments that I was able to go to web sites and hear calls before firefox made an update that removed my windows media plug in. The simple download fix, presumeably from windows, does not work, apparently because firefox can't find the fix. That is not the user's fault, and it looks like windows tried to provide a fix, and firefox won't recognize it.
Bottom line, it is easier to use another browser, than try and get the windows media player plug in installed on firefox. What good is a browser, if you can't hear a call on the website that the browser takes you to? Please make it easy to install the windows media plug in on firefox. Thank you..

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
    (1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
    (i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
    (2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
    Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.
''Edit: I suggest just doing #1.''

  • "NOT RESPONDING" message whenever I start using my Windows Media Player

I don't know what it is that causes this - if it's something to do with having the lesser expensive Hewlett-Packard computers, but this is the 2nd HP laptop I've had and the one thing I've had in common w/both of them is that, one, I got them for under $500 - about $445 or so, w/tax...anyway, I suppose that the more expensive HPs are better and wouldn't have petty problems like this - but anyway, - the last one I had & this one I currently have - the last one was a Windows 7 and this one is Windows 8, so the O/S has nothing to do w/my problem.  Anyway, it's like this:  every time I turn on the PC, then get it all revved up & ready to go, etc. when I turn on my Windows Media Player (WMP) the thing comes up on screen and it sometimes takes a few seconds, since I have about 740 CDs worth of music on here, but anyway, once the CDs show up on the WMP album page (where they're put up in alpha. order of LP name, as opposed to artist names, etc) - and so, when I go from the "A"s downward, just paging through it, looking for something to listen to, for instance, it ALWAYS, inevitably, without fail, gets stuck, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but usually by the time I get to the Cs or  Ds, the thing gets stuck and freezes up on me and I can't do anything w/it. Then, when I try to click the mouse a couple times or whatever, I get a message at the top of the WMP box - on the top of the box it reads "Windows Media Player", like usual, but when it freezes up like this and it stays stuck for anywhere from 10 seconds up to a minute sometimes, the message that pops up right next to the "WMP" label on the blue border reads "NOT RESPONDING".  99% of the time, it just takes a little patience and sometimes just clicking the mouse buttons a few times and/or hitting a few keys on the keyboard (not hard, just randomly pressing down on some) - then it will finally come back & unfreeze and I'm usually able to continue browsing through my catalog, but there has been other times when it seems to be in worse shape - it'll read "NOT RESPONDING" for a while and no matter how much I click the left or right mouse buttons, tap the mouse on the pad, or whatever, it might come unstuck for a few seconds, then, I think I'm OK again, but sometimes, as soon as it looks unstuck, I can't get it to move at all and right away the "NOT RESPONDING" message comes right back up (and the page fades a little too) - in fact, lately, just before I did a refresh thing on my PC to try & get things to work better, it was giving me big trouble, it would just sit there, stuck, frozen up and nothing I did would unfreeze it.  I'd be frantically trying to unstick it, but no matter what I did, it'd still be frozen and when it does that, I can't get it to do anything.  Recently, when it would do this, sometimes, if I had not tried to get too far down in the alphabet, I can get a certain album open and get it to start playing, but the "NOT RESPONDING" message will pop up now and again, but the music will play all right, uninterrupted.
Anyway, this is very annoying.  It's been happening for so long now, that I basically take it for granted that it's going to freeze up on me when I 1st bring it up.  I have no idea what's causing this to happen; like I said, this happened when I had a previous HP laptop that was working with Windows 7.
Kind of a long-winded way of putting this issue to anyone, but I just wanted to be clear and specific.
Is there ANYONE out there who owns a cheapo HP? (not a Compaq, the computer co. HP bought for that purpose, to make their cheap computers and differentiate them from the HPs) - But I wonder, it's been so long since I've even checked -does Compaq even exist anymore as a separate entity from parent co. HP?  If not, then that explains why there's a difference between HP laptops that are $400 or so (at Best Buy) and the more slick, expensive HP laptops that have all the bells & whistles and usually run over $1000.  Of course, I'm not about to shell out twice as much money to buy an HP just to see if the more expensive ones don't behave the way their cheap models do.  I also had a Toshiba I bought about 3-4 years ago and I had even more problems with that - one instance was when the CD drive went out on me and I had to ship it in to HP (still under warranty, thank heavens) and they put a new drive in and shipped it back to me.  It also crashed one time, and got infected with a virus or two or three, which meant I had to re-set the computer back to the original factory settings and, not having an external hard-drive with which to back up all my music, pix, documents, etc (my music is the most important stuff on my computer to me), which meant that I had to go through this long hassle of replacing all the music I'd lost. I have a lot of my own hard copies of CDs, but there were so many more CDs that I didn't have copies of, so I had to visit the library over & over, checking out as many as 25-30 CDs at a time on a lucky day, when the library had a lot of the CDs I needed to replace in my WMP.  I don't want this to happen again, so I am going to get an external hardrive but I still don't know for sure if that would work. At least, by resetting the PC to factory settings I was able to get rid of the virus(es) that were screwing my computer up badly
So - has anyone out there had any similar problems?  If so, I would appreciate any help or suggestions you may have as to how to deal with this sort of thing.
Thanks a lot.  Hope to hear from one of you out there in the future.
    Have a nice 4th...

    Hi;
I upgraded my windows media player 10 to 11 version. Now my hotkeys doesn't work. I was wondering if there is a way to solve this problem.

    Hi
Do you mean the Toshiba Control buttons which control the WMP function like play, pause, stop, etc
On some Toshiba notebooks the Toshiba control buttons can be configured manually.
Please check this in the control panel -> Toshiba controls.
If you will be not successful I would recommend reinstalling the Toshiba utility again
