Adding captions to photos in Aperture 3

Hi All,
I would like yo know if anyone out there has figured out a way to add captions to photos. I am a photographer using Aperture 3, and must be able to send photos to the newspaper with a caption along the bottom left of the photo. I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thanks,
George

Ernie:
While it's possible to open an image directly from Aperture 3, or which was exported from Aperture 3, what you see will vary depending on what happens in between the time you export from Aperture 3 and open with the other application. For instance. If you opened directly into Photoshop CS4, then
There is a link about 1/2 down the Aperture 3 Metadata Issues page *(http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/imagedatabases/aperture3.html)* that is labeled, "Aperture 3 Exported Fields" which will take you to a spreadsheet showing you just all of the options I could find.
For instance, if you were to have opened the file directly from Aperture 3 (using the +*"open in external editor"*+ option), and then saved the file as a TIFF or PSD file, you would certainly see the caption field. However, if you save the file as a TIFF you will find that information in the following fields is not preserved: *ISO Country Code, Intellectual genre, Location, Rights Usage Terms, IPTC Subject Code*. If the image had GPS info, then that will not be preserved either, but that is a problem with Adobe Photoshop and the TIFF file format (a known issue that should be corrected in CS5).
If you opened in an external editor and saved as a PSD file, then the result is even worse. In addition to the five fields above, you also lose all of the *IPTC Core Creator Contact Info(CCI)fields (CCI: City, CCI:Country, CCI: Address, CCI: Postal Code,CCI: State/Province, CCI: Emails, CCI: Phones, CCI: WebURLs) as well as the IPTC Scene* field. That GPS information is retained is but small compensation.
If you export files from Aperture 3 as a JPEG or TIFF file, then th caption field will still visible, but a number of the same fields mentioned above will not be preserved.
If it were at least consistent across file format, regardless of method used to get the files out, that would be one thing, but the results are so varied it would push me to the edge of madness trying to compensate and correct after the fact. If you export, and then modify some of the metadata in Bridge, it's possible to retain more of the metadata, but this is a kludge that you have to remember to do each time after you export.
And this is even before mentioning the lack of support for things like star ratings!
If you dig a little deeper, you'll see there are problems. Granted if you are not a professional, don't use many of the fields mentioned, and don't share your images with others this may not matter much to you. However, for anyone wishing to use Aperture professionally these are very important issues that can not be disregarded.

  • Adding captions to photos for web gallery

    I'm creating a web gallery for my web page and I'd like to add a caption to each photo and not show the file name.  I've got Bridge CS4 3.0.0.464 and would like to use either the 'Filmstrip' template.
    Can't figure out how to add captions.

    The only way I found to do it was to apply the Caption Maker script from Russell Brown before creating the gallery.
    This puts a caption on each picture.

  • Adding Text to Photos in Aperture?

    Is there a way in Aperture to type text on a photo? I know that you can do it with the Books Function, Exporting to Photoshop, or apply a watermark during Export, but is there a way to do it in the adjustments panel or something like that?

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

    I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
    In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
    I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

    I think I just figured this out.
    Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
    It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
    Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.

  • Adding dates to Photo captions

    Anyone know if it is possible to automatically include the capture date with the file name in the caption for Photos? (I'm using iPhoto)

    You could try this.
    In iPhoto, highlight a photo (test this first!) then go to > Photos > Batch Change...
    Set "Title" to "Date/Time"
    Then go to File > Export..
    Set in Filename tab, Name, "Use Title"
    Then export the test picture, either using the export option above, or clicking on the iWeb icon and see what happens.

  • Captions in Photo Album

    I've been trying to add captions to the photo album demonstrated in the Spry demo page (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/gallery_pe/dynamic/index.html).
    Applying the method suggested in DBooth's tutorial for an earlier version of a Spry album, I added an attribute, "description",  to the <photo> element in the xml. In the html, I placed {@description} immediately beneath the image in div="picture". This worked in the DBooth version I built, but not in this one, following the code for the dynamic version above.
    Here's what I have:
    http://www.lumina-media.com/gallerytest/wjgallery2.html
    (Ignoring styling for the time being, the description tag shows up in the padding area. I'll deal with css later.)
    But it doesn't work. Can anyone help me?
    I'm attaching both the html and xml files.
    Thank you in advance.

    When the thumbnail is clicked we want the detailed region updated along with with the main image,
    I think this section of code is where it belongs.
    <div id="thumbnails" spry:region="dsPhotos">
                  <div class="thumbnail" spry:repeat="dsPhotos"><a href="{path}"><img alt="" src="{thumbpath}" /></a></div>
                    <p class="ClearAll"></p>
                </div>
            </div>
    <div id="picture">
              <div id="mainImageOutline"><img id="mainImage" alt="main image" src=""/></div>
         <div class="thumbnail" spry:repeat="dsPhotos"><a href="{path}"><img alt="" src="{thumbpath}" /></a></div>
    xml file below:
    <thumbnail base ="../../gallery/galleries/china/thumbnails/" font = "Arial" fontsize = "4" color = "#F0F0F0" border = "0" rows = "3" col = "5"> </thumbnail>
    <large base ="../../gallery/galleries/china/images/" font = "Arial" fontsize = "3" color = "#F0F0F0" border = "0"> </large>
    <photos id = "images">
    <photo
    path = "china_01.jpg"
    width = "263"
    height = "350"
    thumbpath = "china_01.jpg"
    thumbwidth = "56"
    thumbheight = "75"
    caption = "Caption 1a">
    </photo>
    <photo
    path = "china_02.jpg"
    width = "350"
    height = "263"
    thumbpath = "china_02.jpg"
    thumbwidth = "75"
    thumbheight = "56"
    caption = "Caption 2">
    </photo>
    <photo
    path = "china_03.jpg"
    width = "350"
    height = "263"
    thumbpath = "china_03.jpg"
    thumbwidth = "75"
    thumbheight = "56"
    caption = "Caption 3">
    </photo>
    </photos>
    </gallery>
    OK, some confusion here, description is now "caption", this was changed in XML file in this thread.
    The xml file is above:
    Then in my html file I have only added:
    <div spry:detailregion="dsPhotos">Hello{caption}</div>
    Then my gallery_xds.js file looks like:
    function PhotosFilter(ds, row, rowIndex)
    row.path = row["large/@base"] + row["photos/photo/@path"];
        row.thumbpath = row["thumbnail/@base"] + row["photos/photo/@thumbpath"];
        row.caption = row["photos/photo/@caption"];
        return row;
    The result gives me the "Caption1" once and it is the same for all, no refresh.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does adding captions to existing JPEGs degrade image?

    Using Photshop Elements 5.0, when I open an existing JPEG file and add a caption, the file's date stamp is changed to the current date, even if I don't actually edit the image.
    I know that opening, editing and then resaving an existing JPEG file causes the image quality to degrade each time this process is repeated, since the JPEG format format uses lossy compression. I'm wondering if adding a caption does the same thing, i.e., causes the image quality to degrade.
    Is adding a caption equivalent to editing the file, even if the actual graphic image isn't altered at the same time? Does adding captions to JPEG files after the fact cause image quality loss?

    No, adding a caption -- or a date/time, keyword tag, star rating, notes, or GPS location -- updates the file's metadata section without changing the actual photo. (That metadata is sometimes loosely referred to as EXIF, XMP, or IPTC.) So you don't need to worry about loss of image quality due to recompression.

  • Lost photos in Aperture!

    I recently imported images to Aperture from my camera (4 GB worth of photos), and after uploading, I deleted the pictures from the memory card in my camera, as I always do. But Aperture closed shortly after I added the new photos, and upon Aperture restarting, a window popped up saying something about an update (like the program had updated). But my pictures were gone! And not just the new ones I had added. Of the thousands of pictures I had stored in Aperture, only 20 are there now! It makes no sense. I can't find them anywhere. I have tried restoring the library, restarting my computer...I have searched everywhere on my computer that I know to look, and I cannot find the files anywhere! It's like thousands of pictures just disappeared. Anyone have any ideas of how I can get my pictures back?? I know that once something is on your computer it's almost impossible to completely remove it, but I have no idea where to locate these files....It says it is Aperture version 3.2.4, and I am running OS X version 10.6.8

    The number one lesson here is: never delete anything without confirming that you have two copies elsewhere.  I don't erase my cards until after I have uploaded to Aperture _and_ backed up the Aperture Library.
    The first thing to do is make sure that Aperture is currently fully up-to-date and working.
    The second thing to do is search your system for all Aperture Libraries.  It may be that your Images are safe inside another Aperture Library.  Use Spotlight to search for the Aperture Library file extension: ".aplibrary".
    Open all of these and see if you find your missing Images.
    Post back.
    Good luck.

  • Update available photos in Aperture?

    Does anyone know how to make iWeb refresh the list of available photos in Aperture? Much of the time in my workflow I am working with both Aperture and iWeb at the same time, adding photos to Aperture and building pages that use the new photos.
    However, short of quitting iWeb and reopening, which does force an update, how to make iWeb update available pictures when Aperture has had photos added?

    I don't use Aperture but you can try this:
    1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and the contents of the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder.
    2 - launch iWeb and try again.
    3 - next, if needed, reapply the iLife Support 9.0.4 updater.

  • HT201317 Edited photos in Aperture don't share

    I have a selection of photos I have edited in Aperture and added them to Photo Stream. They seem to correctly get added to the Photo Stream directory in Aperture and appear along with all the other shared photos, however they will not appear on my iPhone Photo Stream. I can only seem to share unedited photos. (All undedited photos I shared within Aperture appear on my iPhone)
    Is there a limitation using Photo Stream with Aperture?
    I am using the latest version of Aperture v3.4 under OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion and iOS6 on my iPhone
    Please advise.

    You might post over at the Aperture forum, you'll find experts there that can help.

  • New Apple application PHOTOS vs APERTURE

    Hello to everyone.
    With the coming of the new application PHOTOS (that is not a professional one) will APPLE continue to support APERTURE? (I mean with new updates and new releases for the next MAC OS systems)
    If not what is that best way to work?
    Change from APERTURE to PHOTOS (loosing all the professional features).
    Change from APERTURE to LIGHTROOM.
    Remain with the double management of PHOTOS and APERTURE (in this case there is a way to take inly a library?)
    Thank you in advance for your answer.

    Apple is simply making one piece of software that can run on multiple devices - and its geared toward take pictures with ipad or iphone and transfer through the cloud to your desk top sort of thing,   They are defining a platform that cuts out desktop only users.
    I use Photoshop - and am well aware that PHOTOS does not support PSD files (IPHOTO does or did if they dropped it after ILIFE09)
    Apparently many of the features of PHOTOS are in options that have to be added to menu bar.
    Biggest problem seems to be lack of easy to find instructions.
    Below is some getting started pages.

  • Need thoughts on adding caption

    I have finished scanning a number of old family photos and have used Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (PSE9) to “tag” and add “captions” to each photo. The photos vary in size and are saved in tif format. All of the work I have done so far was using the Organizer in PSE9.
    I have gone to the Edit screen of PSE9 and used Process Multiple Files to add the “captions” to the photos. There are three options for placement: Bottom Left, Bottom Right or Centered. Centered puts the caption dead center of the photo. What I really want is Bottom Centered but that is not an option.
    I am a complete novice with most photo software but I have used IrfanView and Paint. Is there any way to get the captions to be added to a photo in a bottom centered position.
    I am well over 400 photos with “captions” and I have no intent of typing by hand something I have already entered. I do wish I understood this more. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    If you want to place the same information on multiple photo files, the batch process which you reference will do it. The downside is that you have limited control as to placement.
    Consider making a brush. This will allow for placement, color, and size to suit, although it is a manual process. There are many tutorials for making a brush. Here is one:

  • Having trouble captioning my photos ahving optimised and repaired the catalogue - any ideas please?

    I'm having lots of difficulty captioning my photos in organiser and have repaired and optimized my catalogue - any ideas please?

      Try adding captions via the properties panel. Right click on your first thumbnail and choose Show Properties from the bottom of the context menu.
    You can enlarge the panel by dragging the bottom right corner. Make sure you are using the general tab. Enter your text in the caption field, then use the right arrow key to move to the next thumbnail.
    It’s an alternative way of adding captions which uses less memory than opening images full screen.

    I can not sync all photos in Aperture into Iphone 5. It always can sync some photos into 5. Then finish and prompts: "itunes can not synchronize (other)thousands of projects, and see more information in itunes".  That means most of my photos can not seen on Iphone 5, it seems just can't import to 5. Is that the problem of Iphone or the pictures in Aperture, or even just because lack of sufficient space?
