Adding Color to White Background

I have a photo of a silver object taken on a white background. I would like to change the white background to some other color, but have been unsuccesful in doing so. Any ideas?

As Byron hinted, there are lots of ways to change the background. Here is another one:
If the background is solid white or close to it, you can try the Magic Wand tool. Click anywhere on the white and hopefully the entire background will be selected. If not all of it is selected or the selection drifts into the object, try adjusting the Tolerance or add/subtract from the selection using the Lasso tool. Feather the selection a few pixels if you want a soft transition between the object and background.
With the selection active, create a new layer above the image and fill it with your color. You can then adjust the layer's opacity to get the shade you want.

I used the Background Eraser tool to remove the background, and I would like to replace the newly transparent background with a color or gradient. I cannot seem to isolate the background with the foreground of the photo. I'm a newbie using Photoshop CS5.

double click on the background layer to make it into a normal layer
add a new layer (layer>new>layer)
fill it with the colour you want(edit>fill (with colour)
Move Colour layer to below your layer 0 *(ctrl-[ )

When talking about a specific image posting the image may be useful.
One can use a Layer Mask and add a white Layer underneath.

As a Professional Photographer, I chose to buy an IPad 4 for only one reason and that was the amazing color and clarity of the Photo Gallery as a mobile Portfolio.
Originally the background color of the IPad 4 Gallery was BLACK and this facilitated the photos greatly, photos look better and stand out better on a BLACK background. White backgrounds cause a glare eminating from the edges of the photo and cause iris in our eyes to close down, degrading the quality of the photo being viewed.
I updated to ios 7 and now my IPad 4 has a WHITE background, which is unacceptable for viewing photos.
HOW DO I CHANGE the WHITE background on the Photo/Gallery/COLLECTIONS to BLACK?
Apple should ALWAYS give USERS/OWNERS of their products control of such details. IT'S JUST GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Vancouver22 Thanks for your help... the SLIDESHOW turned black for me automatically when the slideshow began. That works most excellent!
Now if I can just get the White Background to STAY BLACK, this might not be as painful as I feared.
My IP4 does lag slightly, but not enough to set fire to it yet.
The gallery/COLLECTIONS/ALBUMS are the most important thing to me.

Please clarify your "Elements 12". Is that as in Photoshop Elements 12 (photo editor) or Premiere Elements 12 (video editor). And, on what computer operating system is the program running?

I have code that finds / marks words with a different color. Now I want to remove that color. I've started with the following, but cannot complete it.

I have some suggestion one leave it as is and use a blending mode of multiply to give it a color background like this
leave it as is make it a grayscale tiff import int Illustrator and color it it in Illustrator like this
Or trace over it with the brush tool aand then give it a color ground.
Or do the original over and do a cleaner job with no tone or a minimum of tone. Then Live trace.

PDF shows background color as white. Prints black. HELP!

I'm trying to print the screen the way I see it which is a white background with black font and an image, but it won't.
I went under preferences and accesibility and replaced document colors to black text and white background.
However, it still prints in it's Image with black background format.
Help, I've never written on one of these and this is frustrating! Thanks much!

Nice tip. Yeah the spreadsheet is definately much close to perfect with Bridge/your method. I'm able to change the background to black and get rid of the gaps completely. It looks like this at the moment: http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/8359/bridge1c.jpg
There's just one problem. I can only save the file as PDF, when instead I'd like to save it as .jpg or .png, but I guess I could work around this and batch autoconvert all of those PDF spreadsheets into JPG or PNG format with Photoshop after I'm done making all of the spreadsheets.

Use the color fill option - select the inserted .pdf and assign a fill color of white to it using the Color Fill Menu on the Toolbar or the Color Picker Palette.

"Unlike". iOS 7 doesnt display well on my 4S. iOS 6.1.3 should still be supported for older hardware. I think I shall me moving to Samsung Galaxy now. Was really hoping hte new iphone would get a bit larger.

Just put a Solid Color Layer atop it and set it to Blend Mode Multiply or
• load the Channel with the best contrast (cmd-click it in the Channels Panel)
• invert Selection (cmd-I)
• create a black Solid Color Layer
• put whatever below that Layer
