Adding Covers and song info slow down

I just my new 120gb Ipod for christmas and I started to load album covers to it. It started out fine, the album cover would load/save in no time, but now it takes forever to save a cover to a song, any help on why?

Hi JGG,
Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention that I house my iTunes library on an external drive. I understand that, of course, anything hosted off of my computer would be slower than if it was on my laptop, but this still seems much slower than it was on my older computers (where I also used an external to host the music). Also, I mentioned earlier that if I added music to iTunes that was in a random folder on the external, it would show up instantly on the playlist; but if I added music that was within my iTunes library-folder on the external, it would upload very slowly. Even after it's on the iTunes playlist and "organized" within the Library-folder with the correct titles/folder names, just editing a song (for example, to change the year) would take a long time as well.
Edit: And, I just realized, there is a big delay when I try to click on a song to play. The little spinning color wheel pops up for a few seconds every single time I click to play a new song out of my playlist. I'm sure that NEVER happened in the past on my old macbook when I also used an external drive.
Thanks for your help!

  • Song just slowed down and died - can't reboot, can't charge...

Ipod is dead - while playing, the song just slowed down completely, warped like a dying cassette tape player, and then froze. Nothing on screen. Tried to recharge - pc doesnt' recognize, no icon on ipod, rebooting many times doesn't work.
Is there any hope? Is this symptomatic of a dead-in-the-water battery or a shot disk drive? I'm traveling in India for another month so can't send in for service until I return to US...any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tryed Charging the device for atleast 20min since this problem?
    If yes,
Try to Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.
If the device still does not respond. You should try to restore the phone.
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force device into recovery mode.

  • Why do GarageBand, iMovie, Photobooth, and Hulu and Youtube videos slow down my whole computer?

I have a higher end 13" MacBook Pro running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that I purchased in August of 2010. About a month ago, I was using iMovie to edit a project when all of a sudden it started responding extremely slowly. Like, near impossible to work on my project slow. The whole computer was lagging, the mouse was unresponsive and I could barely use the gestures on the trackpad to get to different programs. Eventually the pinwheel of death showed up, and I quit iMovie. As soon as it closed, everything returned to normal. I restarted the computer to see if that would help, but as soon as I opened iMovie again, the whole computer started lagging. I then noticed that the same problem occured when I used GarageBand, iPhoto, Skype, and when I watched Hulu or YouTube videos. With all of these programs/sites, everything is running fine beforehand, but when I open them up, chaos sets in. This problem doesn't occur when I use other intensive programs like Photoshop or Illustrator, nor while I'm browsing the web. The only web problems are when I watch a video. Any video. Other than that, web pages are as quick to load as ever, and I can use the computer normally for any other task. This is seriously a problem because I use iMovie and GarageBand for school a lot, and my grades depend on me being able to use these programs effectively. All of these problems have persisted with these apps since that first instance about a month ago, and no significant changes occurred to instigate them. In attempts to solve the situation, I have cleared my cache, freed up space on my drive (I have 56 free gigs out of 320), I have verified and repaired the disk permissions, and I have downloaded the Apple provided Trojan removal tool for Snow Leopard. This seemed to work for about 10 minutes, but the apps and videos quickly started lagging and slowing down my whole computer again. If anyone else has experienced anything like this, I would love to hear exactly what has happened to you and to see what you did to [try to] fix it. Thanks for reading all of this, I need all the help I can get right now. Also, I can't watch The Daily Show or The Colbert Report on Hulu anymore, and it's killing me! Thanks again.

It's very difficult to say without knowing more about your system. There are a number of possibilities. First, your 13" lacks a discrete GPU, so the CPU is doing the work that a GPU would have done as far as decoding video streams, etc. Each video stream will consume considerable resources from the machine, and if you have multiple things running with video streams being decoded (for example, a browser with video Flash or cumbersome animation and iMovie running at the same time), then that may be a factor.
Additionally, it could be that you are memory constrained. You didn't post a picture of the process list from activity monitor or the memory usage stats, but you probably want to look and see what the memory and CPU usage is and who's consuming what. Some applications are pretty inefficient. For example, if you have iPhoto open and have thousands of images, the indexed metadata and thumbnails are all stored in RAM. iMovie pulls in clip thumbnail sets - (and worse, it has to do on-the-fly transcoding video assets from some cameras that don't encode the video using the parameters it expects to make indexing frames easier). Again, this would show up as periodic spikes in CPU activity for the app.
You seem to have plenty of disk space, that's not likely to be a problem.
Check if Time Machine is running. Time Machine introduces a performance impact, but it's exacerbated by the presence of frequently changed large files (e.g., you don't want Time Machine backing up your video projects while you are working on them).
Lastly, you may consider checking the console for error messages. This might reveal background processes that might be bogging down the system, or things like filesystem/disk errors. If there are errors in the filesystem, when you access certain portions of the disk, the OS and applications can slow down or lock-up as a result.

  • Why won't my last five or six iTunes purchases play on my iPhone after I sync.  I can see the album covers and songs in the lineup.  But won't play.

Why won't my most recent iTunes purchases play on my iPhone?  Oddly, the album covers and song titles show up on the phone after synching, but still won't let me play them.

I'm a bit confused by your question.
You say you have synced with your iMac, and that you have match turned on. If match is turned on you can't sync music any more.
Are the purchases new, or old ones?
Can you confirm that match is turned on on both the iMac and the iPhone.

  • Is my 23,000 song library slowing down my computer?

    Hi guys,
I have 23,000 songs on an external hard drive, and I wondered if iTunes writing the library file every once in a while, or any other cause, could be considerably slowing down my computer, why, and what I can do about it.
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Alec:
As I understand it, unless you were playing all your songs at once, your 23000 songs take up disk space, but don't slow down your computer. When you are running iTunes, importing music, or burning to CD iTunes will take up CPU capacity. You can watch the activity monitor and see how much of CPU capacity it takes up. If you don't find your computer underperforming in any way, you are fine. If you do, the cause is very likely elsewhere.
    Good luck.

  • Songs are slowed down after I save them in Garageband

I am new to recording and macs altogether so bear with me. I am running an MBox 2 as my USB interface with Garageband into a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz. When I record, everything works fine and I'll save it. Then when I open it again and listen to it, the playback is much slower than when I recorded it but in the right key. I'm not sure if I need to reset the tempo or what, but I can't seem to save any song and then reopen it without it being slowed down considerably.
    Any thoughts?

I am in the same boat as you, but with a tad bit more experience. Have had an MBP for about 2 months now, MBOX 2, and do a lot of recording with GarageBand.
Something that I have come to understand is that recording software such as Garageband or Pro Tools (which I use occasionally) has to retrieve files that are on the HARD DRIVE in order to play them back, while they are being played back. Therefore, if one did not know that HARD DRIVE speed was important (which I did not), you're a bit out of luck. There are two speeds of hard drives optional on the MBP, one is around 7000 and one is around 5000, unfortunately for me, I bought the 5000, and so playback is sometimes slow, and its frustrating.
Here's what I would suggest. First, export what you have of your song that is slowing down into iTunes and then play it. See if it plays back in iTunes at the speed you recorded it.
If it does... Go to the optimizing garage band performance page and do everything in all steps. Free up any available hard drive space you can (don't delete anything necessary but do what you can)... turn bluetooth off... leave all other applications off. .... All of these steps have helped me out a ton and I am able to mix at the speed I recorded.
If for some reason your problem is different from what I've experienced, lemme know and I'll look into it.
    Peace

  • Import MP3 and AIF Audio Slowing Down

    Hello All,
I am trying to create a podCast of my Temple's weekly service. The sound system saves the audio to a Compact Flash as a MP3 file. I had wanted to use GB3 to add graphics and publish with iWeb but I am having a strange problem.
When I add the existing sound file to a new podCast template, the audio slows down about 5-10%. I've tried to add the file through iTunes/Media Browser and I have tried converting the file to an AIFF in QT7 then drop-and-drag to a new track. In both cases the slowing of the audio acquired.
I tried adding additional new audio via internal Mic and it plays normally. I have a iMac G5 with 1GB RAM...so I don't believe it's my compture.
    Help! Please!
Thanks in advance for suggestions and solutions...

  • My Macbook Pro is 18months old and has recently slowed down. specifically it wont load photos on Autotrader any suggestions?

My MacBook Pro is 18 months old and has just started to slow down. It is also not loadng certain photos from the autotrader website if this is relevant?

You may be able to improve the speed with some software work but it could also be your disk or SSD is corrupt or failing.
    Try an SMC Reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Is it faster now?  If not, proceed.
    Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup.  If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly.  SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long.  They can continue operating as read errors are increasing.  The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation.  If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail.  SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.

    and
    Mac Performance Guide: http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/
    Safe Mode:
    - Reboot the system in Safe Boot mode.
    - Power on the Mac and when you hear the bong, hold down the shift key until it is booted.
    - Be patient, this will take some time while it checks the filesystem.
If it runs faster in Safe Boot mode then it is probably third-party software compatibility issues.
    - Restart.
    - Does it run faster after the restart?
Spotlight:  If Spotlight is continually running, re-index Spotlight:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
    Runaway processes:
Launch Activity Monitor (in the Applications/Utilities folder).
    Click on the CPU heading.
Are there a process taking up a large percentage of the time?
If so select it and click on the upper left hand X to force quit the process.
Run Disk Utility (found in the Applications folder):
-In Disk Utility look at the S.M.A.R.T. Status.
If it says the disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired then stop.
Your system could be in danger of failing at any time and you need to replace the disk soon.
      Back your system up twice.
(You will need a second external disk for the second backup.)
Consider using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! for the second backup to clone the disk.
Jump to the Hardware replacement section and seek expert help.
Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk.  If Disk Permissions reports errors, don’t worry.  That is normal.  If Verify Disk reports errors then they need to be repaired.  Otherwise skip to the reinstall OS X section.
    Repairing your system disk:
    - Boot in recovery mode.
(Boot and when you hear the bong hold down the
Command and R keys simultaneously until you see the recovery screen.)
    - Select disk utility.
    - Select your system drive.
    - Repair Disk.
    - Did it complete without errors?
If not you may need a new disk or SSD.  Seek expert help.
If it completed normally then reboot.
-Did it boot faster and is it more responsive?
    Reinstall OS X:
If it is still slow you should reinstall OS X.
    - Boot in Recovery Mode again.
    - Follow the instructions to reinstall OS X.
    - Now does it boot and run faster?
    Hardware replacement or upgrade?
Hopefully by now your Mac is back to its normal speed.  If a hardware repair is indicated take it to an Genius bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.  If it is under warranty or AppleCare they will repair it for free.  If not, you can compare their estimate with DIY repairs.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
You can speed it up further by upgrading some hardware.  For the following memory, disk or SSD replacements and upgrades check out OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/, Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ and Kingston http://www.kingston.com/us/.  You will need to know your Mac the year and season your Mac was first sold and model number which can be found here:
     > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report > Model Identifier:
If your Mac has 2 or 4 GB of RAM, consider an upgrade to 8 GB (if the memory is upgradeable).  An 8 GB memory upgrade is only $100.  When I upgraded a MacBook from 2 GB o 8 GB it booted thee times faster.
If your Mac has a disk and it won’t repair properly, is low on disk space, or you just want a considerably faster disk, check out an upgrade to an SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch" or consider an SSD (120 to 480 GB).
OWC has SSD replacements and upgrades for MacBook Airs and Retina MacBook Pros.
Good luck.  May the software fixes do the trick.

  • DFSR Errors and Initial Sync slows down Network

    Hello
I have a Windows 2012 Server (primary member-site A) where i created one Replication Group which replicates one folder with the amount of 104 GB of Data over WAN to another Windows 2012 Server (site B)
I added the Namespace-Server, created the Replication Group with 24 GB Staging quota and now it's waiting for the initial sync which slows down my network on the primary member site badly. Ping-timeouts, 6 times slower ping, i almost can not work remote.
It created the folder structure on site B, ~4GB.
If i stop the DFS-Replication service, network traffic is normal again. I also get a couple of errors in event viewer:
    DFSR ID 5012 error 9026
    DFSR ID 5014 error 9033
    Anybody got an idea? Thanks

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
Robocopy is sometimes recommended to customers as well as Backup-Restore. For DFS initial replication, the important part is to get most files ready in the other side - it is fine to level some difference such as permission, newly updated files etc. These
difference will be updated soon with finishing initial replication.
Hope the issue was already fixed in these days!

  • My Mac book pro has the end of a earphone stuck to it. After this I updated to maverick, and this massively slowed down my computer. Now my laptop is switching on and logging in just fine, but after logging in the screen goes white. What can the reason be?

At first my laptop was fine after the earphone end got stuck in. Soon it started getting slower, and suddenly it stopped switching on. The people in the service station said that it wAs because the hard disk drive was corrupted. I came back home, and immediately it stopped working again. This time they said it was because of water spill. They changed the entire key board and then it started working for a while. Later I updated to maverick and that slowed down my computer. Once, I switched on my laptop, logged in, and then the screen went white. When we took it to the service center they said they will need to replace the hard disk. I am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions?

Liquid damage from water spill is progressive, unfortunately.
    Best.

  • DT files dropped into Finder and whole Mac slowing down

Hi, I don't really know where to start my thread, so apologies if this is not the right place. My problem is that my Mac has slowed right down suddenly and my various DT files will not reappear (except for a few) when I restart. In fact, the DT is empty until I click at random, after which some of them appear. This all started when I did something that was probably unwise. I wanted to make a copy of my Photo Library for my external drive, so I created a file on the DT to put them in but this operation (about 5000 pictures) never really finished and I can see that these photos are stuck in some kind of DT limbo. What I may have done is drop them into the HD by mistake while I was dragging them to the external disk (?). I think that is what has bunged everything up but I have no idea what to do. I am trying to delete them within Finder but each time I do this I get a message for each individual file saying that the file is being used in another application and that deleting it might damage the other application. I can delete them, except for a few. In any case, this means clicking another 4500 times to delete each one individually, which is a bit beyond me. If anyone can help or direct me to another post, I'll re-post there.

Good! Available 194GB You are nowhere near the 10% mark.
Ok.. since things are slowing down... try booting from your install disk and run the Disk Utility app to check the startup disk for errors. You will need your install disk to do this.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
*"like when I first turn it on, it takes forever to go to the users box."*
Open System Preferences/Accounts and select the Login Items tab.
If there are any applications listed there, delete them.
And go to ~/Library/Startup Items. If there are any files in the Startup Items folder, delete those also.
And see if deleting this file helps.
    com.apple.loginwindow.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
