Adding Default Search Locations to Spotlight

In Spotlight, I would like to have my external storage hard drives added to my default search locations. Every time I search for a file, I have to manually check the additional drives. Preferences gives me an option to PREVENT searches in specified locations, but I can't find a way to allow searches or set as defaults. I think I need to add these to my "Home" folder, but my "help" searches have not revealed how.

Are you referring to those listed in the Spotlight preferences? If so they are not apparently user-changeable.

  • OS4 Safari google default search location = wrong country!!

    Hi there,
Small problem.. Safari in OS4 for iphone 4, I use the Google Search bar at the top which I like but for some reason it has defaulted to google.au (Australia) which is kinda annoying as i'm English and live in England and would like google.com results or possibly google.co.uk searches. I know I can change to Yahoo & Bing but I like google and i don't want to have to go to google.com manually all the time or to the bookmark of it. Is there a way to change the google search location in the top search bar to google.com without a 3rd party app?
The only reason I can think of is that my MacBook is from Australia and has an Australian keyboard layout hence I keep the Australian flag at the top for the correct keyboard layout for my computer. Although I have changed this to British, restarted and re-synced and i still get the google.com.au for Australia on the iphone4.
Any advice would be great, thank you in advance!!
    Matt

In case you're still looking, I found the solution (on my iPad anyway):
Go to Settings - General - International - Region format - <chose your region, eg, United Kingdom>
    Cheers

  • SBS 2011 GPO for changing the default save location for Word/Excel 2013 not working

So this is a strange one. I've got an SBS 2011 server that's the only domain controller in the org. I've created a GPO to change the default save location for Excel 2013 and Word 2013 using the Office 2013 ADMX files which were installed to the PolicyDefinitions
    folder.
The GPO (U-Office2013 Default Save Location) only contains:
    1. User Configuration - Microsoft Excel 2013/Excel Options/Save - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
    2. User Configuration - Microsoft Word 2013/Word Options/Advanced/File Locations - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
The GPO is linked at the OU that contains my users for my SBS organization.
When I do a gpupdate /force on a windows 7 system with office2013 installed, and then run a gpresult/rsop, the policy appears to be applied successfully as it lists my GPO under the Applied GPOs list on the workstation:
    Applied GPOs
Default Domain Policy dyndns.local AD (24), Sysvol (24)
    U-Office2013 Default Save Location domain.local/SBSusers AD (6), Sysvol (6)
In the gpresult report, the applied settings appear under:
    Administrative Templates
    Extra Registry Settings
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\excel\options\defaultpath Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\doc-path Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
BUT, when I go to the workstation, and check office->options-Save-default file path, the path has not been changed to what the GPO is pushing.
The strange thing is that in my test environment running 2008R2 server and Win7 with Office 2013 and identical settings the default save location is applied and works as expected.
    Any ideas?
I've already tried re-installing the ADMX templates and re-created the GPO's several times.
I should also note that other GPO's on the SBS2011 server such as the folder redirection GPO work as expected on the same windows 7 system. It just appears to be an issue with the default save location in office2013 and other Office 2013 related GPOs which
utilize the recently added ADMX template that don't seem to be working for me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Justin,
Thanks for your reply. I have tried several different user accounts (all have local admin privileges to the workstation) with the same issue. The default save path does not get applied from the GPO to any of the users i've tried. Here's the steps I took
    per your suggestion:
    1. log on as a user who has never logged onto the workstation before.
    2. run gpupdate /force (entered y for yes when prompted to log off).
    3. Log back in as the user and open Office and check the default save path. It has not been changed to match the GPO setting.
    4. Check rsop to see if the policy was applied. Rsop states the gpo was applied successfully.
I have attached the gpsvc.log file from a the session described above. The GPO Guid in question is: {DC3C93EC-7C28-48E9-BA38-FCA1E275A207}. Its common name is: U-Word 2013 Default Save Location. It's only setting is:
    Policies\Administrative Templates\Policy definitions(admx files retrieved from central store\Microsoft Word 2013\Word Options\Advanced\File Locations\Default File Location = Enabled\Documents = F:\

  • Default search in sequenced Firefox not working

    Dear Pro´s,
I´m currently trying to sequence Firefox (v34.0.5) which is working fine except one problem.
There is no default search at all when running it on clientside.
    What I do:
Before I start sequencing I´m setting the following exclusions:
    •[{AppData}]\Mozilla
    •[{Common AppData}]\Microsoft\RAC
    •REGISTRY\USER\ [{AppVCurrentUserSID}]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
Then I start the sequencing with a cmd-file which just runs the firefox-installation with the params "-ms" and "/ini" following an ini-file.
Then, when the installation is finished, I run Firefox once and delete all searches but google and set it as default.
After that I´m publishing it on the managementserver and log in to the client. When I then start the published Firefox there´s no search provider at all. Not even google, which I left in there as default.
I cannot find any problems for firefox in any event log.
Do you guys have any idea?
    Thanks in advance
    GoProo

    Hi,
we are facing the same problem. I dived a little deeper and compared the behaviour of firefox when using App-V and when running without any virtualization.
    With App-V:
    QueryDirectory for "C:\ProgramData\App-V\B014C463-F988-4DB8-BE63-AF10464FFD31\38FAEB93-2A89-4872-999D-C0797E0D2253\Root\VFS\ProgramFilesX86\Mozilla Firefox\browser\searchplugins\*":
Followed by the list of found .xml files:
After retrieving this list, no more access to the files of this directory occur.
If you look at the log using a non-virtualized Firefox, you see the same listing but followed by actual read-operations to the xml files. Then all Search Engines are shown correctly.
Does anyone have an idea why Firefox stops reading the files? Are the paths too long or is Firefox really not aware of this when virtualized?
For myself I found a workaround. I redirected all %appdata% folders to a network share (on my Citrix XenApp servers). Because all Firefox Profiles reside on this share, I copy the searchplugins folder to the firefox profiles, as one can see accesses to this
folder, too. In this location the xml files can be found and will be used.
Downside is, new users won't have the files and should get them using scripting on first launch of the application (i.e. after profile creation in %appdata%).
Anyone with a better idea of solving this?
    Regards,
    Andre
PS: I added images to this post to make things clearer, but I'm not allowed to post images or links, yet. @Microsoft: Thats very annoying and will not keep me as a user in this forum.
    Andre,
How are you copying the search engines?  The .default is randomly generated, correct?  Thanks.

  • No default search engines

I installed freeware that hijacked my search. It removed all of the default search engines and left only bing which was then set to my default. I managed to get bing off the list and added google so I can search. It is not my preferred search tool. I cannot find my preferred search, yahoo, as an add-on. The restore search engines tool is grayed out. I tried a reset add-ons to no avail. I am using Windows 7. Do I need to reinstall firefox?

The default search engines are supplied as a part of Firefox, so the easiest way is to reinstall. (Other ways such as trying to download them separately would be kind of challenging.) Here's how I suggest doing it:
    '''Clean Reinstall'''
We use this name, but it's not about removing your data/settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean. As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.
    (1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 36.0.4 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
    (2) Exit out of Firefox.
    (3) Rename the program folder
    ''(64-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
    ''(32-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
    (4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
    Any improvement?
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
    * \OldFirefox\Plugins
    * \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

  • My default search engine problems on safari

I have my default search engine set on google and everytime I go to search something it gets searched on bing instead of google. I can't stand bing and I do not know what happened to cause this problem and can not figure it out on how to fix it. What do I have to do to fix it?

You may have (likely) gone to some site where software downloads are offered, at some point, and gotten an 'adware' product. This 'bing' browser issue is part of a thing called conduit. There are bits and pieces that get distributed in your OS X system from opening files (or having a browser set to automatically open 'trusted' downloads) that really are not what they say. In the process looking to get a copy of Flash player, you could go to a non-Adobe site and instead get genieo, conduit, or other adware corrupted files that don't do what they propose, yet mess with your computer. Even 'cleanupyourmac' kinds of things can be laced with junk files. Unnecessary, altogether. Avoid the temptation, for example, to get 'cleanmypc' kinds stuff, instead learn how OS X works, first.
There are a variety of adware products out there, so you will have to read through The Safe Mac pages to see what best matches what you can find in your computer. Sometimes the output of Console (utility) can help, also a system profile of your running OS X from etrecheck can show plists or other extension parts that could be affecting your computer. Symptoms of the problem.
•The Safe Mac - Adware Removal Guide:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
(See 'conduit' in /arg above, also see 'Locating files from paths' as a way to track down their location and existence, as part of removal; this may be one of the best methods of finding these)
For general information on your computer, or you need to show someone what your Mac's present configuration is running, get: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck The info from this can be added to your posts in discussions. Use the camera icon.
Be careful of the sources of 'free' applications and the nature of things you may feel inclined to get, as there are several out there totally unnecessary and the problem comes from the user installing junk under fear or false promise, and a general unawareness of how to correctly handle Mac OS X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I change my default search back to Google?

I downloaded a program that set my homepage and default search engine (in all my browsers) to their search engine. When I search by typing in the address bar (as opposed to the search bar) it used to go to Google, but now it goes to this other site. I changed the search bar and homepage back to Google but I can't find how to change it back to Google when I search from the address bar. Help!

To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
*Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)

  • How do I change the default search engine in the address bar?

I am trying to change the default search engine in the address bar to Scroogle SSL, I have tried editing about.config but it either goes to Google or on rare occasions it has opened to Scroogle SSL and the address bar shows https://ssl.scroogle.org/(+whatever was entered), while the main window shows a proxy error .
I have an idea that something needs to be added at the end of the URL in about.config to actually make it search.
Can anybody tell me what the specific settings would be to get this working?
I have Scroogle SSL in the search engine list but I want to remove the search box to save space.
Also I cannot get the search to open in a new tab even though browser.search.openintab is set to True.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, having tried both ways myself what you say is true but that is not the source of my confusion.
(In fact I discovered that when I set the same thing up in Opera10.53 everything up to the ? appears on one line in the setup and the Gw=%s on another.)
What I cannot understand is why, if I am using Scroogle SSl search it is opening the OpenDNS guide.
If I use my Scroogle SSL home page it opens a minimal Google search page, the same thing happens if I use the search box. I expected this would be the same as well or am I missing something?
OpenDNS is preferable to Google but not what I was looking for.
Since I started writing this I have just discovered that changing the keyword.URL does not affect this.
Earlier I recovered my system from an image which undid the changes that I had made to about.config, I have run searches both before and after I edited it again. Both times I finished up on OpenDNS?

  • Setting project default file locations and a few random interface questions

I apologize for the randomness of this post, but it seemed better than spamming a bunch of different posts in a short period of time.  I've been using Premiere Elements 9 for about 6 months now and there are a few little things that I'd like to tweak.
I'd like to change the default file save location for a project.  I've got different projects in different folders and it seems like I should be able to set a default save location for each project.  All I've ever been able to find in the help is how to set the scratch folder, which is different.
I'd like to change the default encoding preset for a project.  For example, I have a custom preset for mp4 under the mobile phone category.  It would be nice to have that be the default whenever I pick the mobile phone category.
With birthdays and concerts and plays and all that stuff I have about 50 videos and a couple hundred large photos already.  Every time Premiere loads, it takes a few extra seconds to load up all of the thumbnails.  I hide all the videos and pictures on the Organize tab and save the project, but it never sticks.  Is this just impossible?
Finally, every so often, the end-of-clip marker acts funny.  I don't know what the proper name for it is, but it is the thing under the mouse cursor in the picture below.  It used to automatically move on the time line as I added or deleted clips.  Somehow I clicked a button and it no longer does that.  After a week or so of not working, it goes back to automatically adjusting as I add and delete clips from the timeline and then it will break again.  Ideas?
Also in the timeline, I now have this huge gap of nothingness on top of video 1, see picture.  My ocd says that Video1 and Audio 1 should be at the very top and the gap should be on the bottom.  Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bob

I kind of wish you'd have spread these questions out over a couple of posts so that we could answer each thoroughly. If I answer all of them in depth in a single post, this answer would be the size of one of my books! (which, by the way, contain many of the answers to these questions.)
    1. The default save location for your videos should be the last place you've saved your video to. So that should happen automatically. Although in my books I recommend that, whenever you start a new project, you create a new folder for it. This is good housekeeping and a good way to keep your tmp and render files in the same place on your drive, which has a number of advantages.
    2. You can't create a custom project preset. The only presets available are the ones Adobe provides. And, although they are pretty extensive, some non-traditional formats (like video from some mobile phones) are not well supported. You may be able to get it to work -- but it's usually a hybrid solution and, personally, if you plan to use your phone's video as your main video source, I'd recommend you look at another video editing program. Premiere Elements doesn't do the hybrid stuff well. It's ideally suited for video from traditional camcorders.
    3. The thumbnails you see when the program loads are not in your current project. At least not until you import them into your Project panel. That Media panel is merely a preview to what's in your Organizer catalog. As I explain in my book, it's usually best to ignore this panel until you really learn your way around the basics of this program. It's very confusing. Fortunately, it adds very little load time to the program itself -- regardless of how much time it seems to add.
    4. The thing in the illustration is the Work Area Bar. It's used to isolate a segment of your timeline for rendering, etc. Usually, it will shrink and grow as you add and remove video from your timeline. Unfortunately, there's a bug in version 9 and, if you manually change it once during a project, you'll have to manually change it for the rest of the time you work on the project. But, if you drag each end of the Work Area Bar to cover your entire timeline of videos, your project shouldn't misbehave.
    5. The "gap of nothingness" on your timeline is just room for you to add more audio and video tracks if you'd like to. It's a good thing to have! BTW, as I'm sure you know (and my books, once again, explain) you can toggle the tracks on your timeline so that they display as either compressed (as in your illustration) or wide open, which allows you to see your clips and control audio and video levels. Once again, this is a very good thing!
    Happy moviemaking.

To clarify: When I search in Spotlight it searches contents. If I want to search by name I have to click on "show all" then click on filename.
Changing this setting is not in the Spotlight preferences.
If I do command-F in the Finder, the search window comes up with "contents" button highlighted.
All I want to to have my default search be filename again, please help!

Have to say that I rather agree with Mark..all we want is a simple, unadorned clean page that doe not track and show usage!! WHY NOT!! Is it too simple for developers..we aren't all (nor do we want to be!) software experts! Come on Mozilla..tidy up and clean up..it might be a quicker programme too!!

  • I tried to use Duck Duck Go as my default search engine for Firefox. I had google set as my default search engine. How do I fix it. Cant use about:config.

Duck Duck go won't even let me access About:config. It's like I am locked into Duck Duck go. I checked my add on manager and found nothing about Duck Duck Go there. I ran a scan on Malwarebytes Pro for any kind of virus and found nothing. I really want google as my default search engine. So far I managed to get Firefox as my main search engine. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean that it won't let you access the <b>about:config</b> page?
Can't you open the about:config page via the location bar or can't you modify prefs?
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

  • An add-on to force firefox switch back to default search engine in search bar

    Hi,
I have a couple search engines installed in firefox's search bar. I find it extremely annoying that each time I change the search engine it remains like that even after restarting firefox. Is there any add-on that would switch back to the one that is on the top of the list (which happens to be my default search engine for navigation bar as well) every time I restart the browser?
Let me give you an example: I use duckduckgo as a default search engine for the nav bar and in the search bar. Let's say I need to find a definition for which I use wikipedia search engine. I switch to wikipedia one then. I turn off the browser and the next time I start firefox the search engine that appears in the search bar is wikipedia and I would prefer it to be duckduckgo.
I hope it isn't to vague.
    cheers,
    Omen

Easiest is to set the preferred default engine to the preferred search engine via the user.js file in the Firefox profile folder by copying the related user_pref() line to this file.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can search the <b>about:config</b> page for browser.search. to locate the pref(s) that you need.
    *user_pref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Google");
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
    * Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
    * Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) user.js file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
    * Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as user.js<br />Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working user.js.txt file

  • Yahoo has become my default search engine. It used to be google; I want google back as my default search engine. Can you help?

Google used to be the default search engine in my FireFox setup. Now it's Yahoo. I would like to change it back to google. Can you tell me how to revert it back to google? If so, thanks.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Two or three days ago.

If anyone is having this issue, I had to change more than just the keyword.url.
Here are the steps I took:
    Open Firefox and type about:config
    Then I changed:
    browser.search.defaultenginename to google
    browser.search.defaulturl to www.google.com
    keyword.url right click {reset} or set = http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
    Then I restarted Firefox.
Consider this another complaint against Yahoo's unclear messaging. I do use Yahoo for some things and I thought perhaps they were going to improve interoperability between services, I guess Microsoft is rubbing off on them.
Mozilla - If my elderly parents encountered this problem, they would not be able to solve it without assistance. Please consider adding this to tools -> options. I love them, but I don't need the exercise in patience

  • DNS UDP Delay - seems to be caused by default search provider

I am having trouble with my local network and UDP connections. there seems to be a 12 second delay when sending UDP connection requests. I used wireshark to spot the issues, and the results pointed toward the DNS server trying to resolve local IPs with bing.com.
I cannot seem to remove the default search provider and I do not see why it is trying to check with bing.com to get the mac address of a local IP. The ports have been added as a rule in the firewall to allow. And when using arp in the command prompt it resolves
the mac address and replies back with it in a matter of milliseconds. So I can not figure out why when I send a UDP connection from an ASP page to another computer on the network it seems to try and ask bing.com where it can find the mac address for that IP.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? I re-installed server 2008 many times and also windows 7 on the client machines and still the same results and the same delay duration.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not getting what you mean.
" I used wireshark to spot the issues, and the results pointed toward the DNS server trying to resolve local IPs with bing.com"
Do you mean that DNS requests sent to bing servers?
"I cannot seem to remove the default search provider and I do not see why it is
trying to check with bing.com to get the mac address of a local IP"
I am not getting also how a system sends a request to bing.com asking for ARP resolution. ARP is a layer 2 protocol and is mainly based on broadcasts and communications with your switches. It is not possible that ARP requests go to internet.
"So I can not figure out why when I send a UDP connection from an ASP page to
another computer on the network it seems to try and ask bing.com where it can find the mac address for that IP."
That would be great that you share the logs you have so that we can have a better visibility.
If you are using an AD domain then I would recommend that you follow the IP settings and DNS recommendations I shared in this Wiki: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18513.active-directory-replication-issues-basic-troubleshooting-steps-single-ad-domain-in-a-single-ad-forest.aspx
That should help in fixing known issues with DNS resolution.
