Adding drives, proc upgrade: Power Supply? Heat?

Hello All,
Thinking of installing a total of 4 Internal Hard Drives, and a dual 1.6ish processor. Wondering if there are any Power Supply and/or heat issues I need to consider.
Current set-up:
PM G4 QS 867
1.5GB RAM
Power Supply is original: AcBel APlPC12..."Total 344W MAX."
Video Card is original AGP GeForce2 MX 32MB VRAM
Apple 17" Studio Display
Thinking of adding:
2 Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 200GB drives in the U-Carrier
2 Hitachi Deskstar SATA 500GB drives, 1 in each of the remaining bottom bays
All controlled via a Projovian "2-Port SATA and ATA133 Dual Connection PCI Host Adapter Card"
and further down the line a dual processor in the 1.6 to 2.0 GHz range.
Intended use is primarily FCP and some Photoshop.
Any thoughts or warnings?
Thanks so much,
Patterson

That should be fine, in regards to power. As for heat, well it could get a little warm in there once you upgrade the CPU. You might want to get a PCI slot exhaust fan once you put the new CPU in there.

    hi Fort3,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If your Planning on an upgrade, Yes It is definitely safe to upgrade the Power Supply even to a 600w or 500,
But Judging on the K450 Casing, this is somehow like the K410 which also may have one connector that you will not find on a replacement PSU
this is the Connector From the Lenovo OEM PSU
This is For powering up the Case feature  such as light and the performance switch on top of the case,
Other Users with k410 who did an upgrades said that they just let the light and the switch off without the connector and there were difference in performance,
Some Did an Upgrade like on this thread,

I have a HP pavilion a6603w desktop model number FK555AA-ABA a6603w.  I have a low to mid level graphics card, which is the most that my power supply will handle.
I want to get a stronger power supply to run a high end graphics card with a self cooling fan.  Can anyone suggest an excellent, reliable power supply brand and model that will fit into my desktop case with minimum fuss?  I am not tech savy but I have replaced my video card and hard drives with no problem.

Hello lugnut1204, I checked the specifications for your system and is appears the system shipped with a 250 power supply. The dimensions for this power supply are 5 15/16 inches wide, 5.5 inches long, and 3 3/8 inches tall. Since your system is a MicroATX version, you would be slightly limited to a power supply of the same size as the original power supply.
Here  is a link to Newegg where a Corsair 600 watt power supply can be found with almost the exact same physical size as you original 250 watt version. The Corsair power supply dimensions are 5.9 inches wide, 5.5 inches long, and 3.4 inches tall.
If you get a power supply too long, it may interfer with the back of the CD\DVD drives.
You would need to locate a video card that you wanted and make sure the power supply requirements were less than the 600 watt Corsair model. Most of the mid to higher end cards require at leaset a 400 to 500 watt or greater power supply.

I have a HP e9140f that has a Bestec ATX0300D5WC power supply that needs replaced. I would like to upgrade to a higher watt power supply.  What would be a compatible replacement?

I prefer the Rosewill 630W, but I would never disregard the CorsairCX 600W. Both are exact fit.

My Lenovo 3000 J110 (Type 7393) come with a Liteon 280W ATX power supply. Ther is no more option in Lenovo part list more than 280W. Can I change the power supply to a bigger one (like 400W)?

but it is a good idea to get a good power supply since the one it comes with is small and most vid cards will ask for more power

  • Upgrading Power Supply hp pavillion p6744y

Need to upgrade the Power Supply. Just wondering if a 600 watt power supply would be too much for the motherboard to handle. Currently a 250 watt PSU is installed.
    HP Pavillion p6744y
    Windows 7 64-bit

It is highly unlikely that a 750 watt power supply will fit/work in your HP Pavilion 500-164 Desktop Computer. It is also completely unnecessary, as largest graphics card you can put in this computer will never use 1/4 of that power. Please consider the Corsiar CX500, CX500M, CX600, and CX600M for your power supply needs. These power supplies are the same physical size as the factory unit and are known to fit and work in most HP full-sized consumer desktop computers.

  • Would this be a unnessasary upgrade (Power Supply)

Ok this is my power supply Rhycom 550W ATX Power Supply Dual Fans Gold I bought at the local Marketpro computer show for $25 bucks. NOw when I seen the 550 watts I said to myself thats more then enuff power. But then I found this great msi fourm page and see I am  very rookie on the whole psu thing. I tried to use the power supply calculator but I would rather Have some expert advise on this and any help would be great I will upgrade if I have to I dont mind at all. So should I upgrade are is this just fine....
Link to the psu I have http://tekgems.com/Products/et-9619-pwr-atx550p4-nb.htm

I might be missing something on that website but I could not find the
Max output combined watts for the 3.3v and 5v rails. Don’t buy any
PSU that does not have at least 200 combined watts!
Also, if you add up the amps I come up with 532 amps @ 100%,
now if you take those 532 amps @ 70% you get 372.4 amps,
that’s not to good for a 550watt PSU!
Usually in PSU, you get what you pay for!

  • Power supply heat sink top operating temperatures

    Hello,
I have been looking around a bit on google and apple support about iMac nominal temperatures and that it can get hot, etc.
Does anyone know what the actual temperatures are when the system would shut down automatically?
I am not really interested in guesses and advice what I should do to avoid it getting too hot, because there are many online, I am just after a list or an online resource (ideally directly from Apple) that allows me to make an informed judgement on whether the iMac is getting close to the limit.
    Regards
    Andreas

You won't get a reply from Apple here because Apple doesn't participate on their forums. However, we can give you the answer.
I haven't heard yet that a Mac has turned off automatically because of the heat. That's because your Mac modifies the fan speed depending of the temperature of the computer, so it's really difficult (near impossible) that your Mac turns off.
We don't recommend that your Mac has more than 80ºC, and if the temperature is 100ºC or more, you must turn off the computer because it's really dangerous for the computer because of future problems.
With a normal use of the iMac, it shouldn't have more than 50ºC, but if you play games, make movies..., it can get 70 or 80ºC, and if it's continued, more temperature. However, fans will keep your Mac cool, so you don't have to worry about the temperature.
Finally, if you want to monitorize the temperature and fan speeds, install iStat Menus > http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

  • K450E Power Supply Upgrade

Hello I'm thinking about upgrading my K450e power supply because I plan to upgrade the video card to a GTX 960 at a later date. From what I've read the K450e supports standard ATX PSUs, but I want to be sure before I purchase anything. Here is what I plan on buying. Thank you in advance for your help. http://www.microcenter.com/product/406088/CX_Series_CX600M_600_Watt_ATX_Modular_Power_Supply

    hi Genesis5o5o,
    Welcome to the Forums.
The PSU that you linked should work on the K450e together with the GTX 960 as other users have also upgraded their K450e as much as a GTX 970 and a 750W PSU.

  • Vi driver for Varian Dual HV power supply

hi, I'm looking for a driver for the Varian Dual and/or Multivac HV power supply.
if anybody has it, please let me know...
    thank you
    Andrea Milocco

    Hi Andrea,
unluckily the instrument driver for your Power Supply is not available on NI site.
You can try to search the driver at link: Search Instrument Driver
Otherwise you could ask information about driver directly to the instrument constructor.
But if you know the commands to talk with instrument and if you are using Labview or Measurement Studio or LabWindows/CVI 7.x you can easily create the communication with the Power Supply through the Instrument Assistant.
    Regards.

  • What power supply do I need for a dead AGP G4 with upgraded processor

I recently upgraded my 400Mhz G4 to a dual 500Mhz board and a bigger, faster HD. I also replaced the internal battery but now the Mac... she is dead. No power, no lights, no nothing.
Will I need an upgraded power supply for the new board, or is it just old and time for a replacement power supply.
I found this on Ebay... will it work?
"This 237W Astec power supply (Apple part# 614-0108) is a clean, working pull from a revision 2 Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth series computer (e.g. 350/400/450/500 MHz single processor) and will also work perfectly in previous models as well. "
    Thanks!
    AGP G4, Dual 500, 768Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi,
The AGP Sawtooth Mac can be switched to an ATX PSU. Later models (Gigabit G4, Digital Audio, Quicksilver and later) have a different power supply and motherboard that passes 28 Volts DC from the power supply to a connector for the ADC port graphics card. (28 VDC is passed to the Graphics card ADC port to power Apple's ADC monitors, introduced in Summer 2000 MWNY.) A standard PC ATX Power Supply does not have 28V DC and will not be pin compatible with the Gigabit G4 and later G4 systems.

It looks like the Sony software has a free trial listed on their page.
    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope
I would download the trial to see how it fares on the current card to use it as a benchmark.  The Sony software doesn't seem to be not as resource intensive as others.  They recommend just 4 GB of RAM.  By comparison, Adobe recommends 8 GB of RAM.  For the video cards, Nvidia is recommending the Quadro Cards.  This was the lowest quadro card I could find but it is low on the vRAM side.  However, this card from the consumer line would work just fine for this need.  It meets all the requirements and has more cuda cores than the linked quadro card.  The GTX 650 card also exceeds PowerDirector's requirements and is towards the top of the recommend listed (the GTX 600 series).
Just to note, the 7570 card the system currently has also exceeds the system requirements for both programs.  It's not at the bottom and it's not at the top.  I would say it's more at the top of the middle category.
