Adding DVD File to Library - File Name Changes

When I add a DVD file name to my library, iTunes changes the name of the file. How do I retain the name of the file that is in my iTunes sub-directory?

According to MacWorld the following terminal commands should restore that behaviour for you:
*defaults write com.apple.iTunes play-songs-while-importing -bool TRUE*

  • Explain media files and library files

Are media file for windows 8 and library files for XP?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Essentially the library files are all things that aren't your media that the library needs in order to work, so includes the Album Artwork folder as well as the files mentioned above. The media files are the songs, videos, books, apps, etc. that are in your library. The red line indicates the media folder. Ideally all your media files should be located inside here. Although it is possible to store media files elsewhere it will be easier to backup, move or migrate a library in the normal layout.
The normal location for the iTunes library is <User's Music>, where the exact path to that depends on operating system and user name.

  • Can't Locate Files in Library although names appear in "Open Library Screen

I have scoured this forum but can't find a solution to this problem. I engaged in the forbidden act of moving files within the iPhoto library and now when I launch iPhoto several photos are missing. What is more troubling, however, is that I cannot locate the files in my iPhoto library.
The strange part is that whn I launch iPhoto and hold down the option key to select a library, I can see all of the files in the library on this screen. When I go back to the actual library, folders that appear in the "open library" screen are not physically present in my library??
I reallly would appreciate any suggestions, advice. Most of these pictures are of my 2 year old daughter. It would be beyond devastating to lose these.
    Thanks.

    Hi sfohrman,
Can you give me a little more info? Did you move photos around in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder? How many did you move? Did you change their name?
Can you put them back to where they originally were?

Doesn't sound like that is an HTML file, but rather a folder of favorites sitting in Windows. Sorry, Firefox can't that data in that format.
    Try this:
    '''''In IE:''''' <br />
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file

  • Definitive Word On ID3 Tags, Library Files & Which Data Is Stored Where...

I have spent a few hours just now (and have read the discussions a lot previously) on various iTunes issues, namely ones pertaining to organization and storage of data & info. I still have quite a few questions I would like the definitive answers for. If anyone knows for sure, thanks in advance for your response!
    1) Is there any difference between how and where iTunes stores data for audio (mp3, m4a, aif, etc.) files vs. movie (mpg, mp4, mov) files, and if so, what are they?
    2) In the info tabs/panes of tracks in iTunes, is the entered data stored in separate places? i.e., the info under the INFO pane stored in the individual media file itself while that in the OPTIONS pane stored in the main library file? Also, did I read correctly that Convert ID3 Tags causes more of the library file data to be embedded in the media file itself? (Not desirable of course, because each play would in effect "modify" the file as if it had changed and needed to be resynched, since play count is part of the data).
    3) Is there a difference between where editable data (artist, title, equalizer setting, genre, rating, etc.) is stored vs uneditable data such as play count, date added, last played, etc.?
    4) Is there a list somewhere online that shows what data is stored in the library file (settings unique to the iTunes) and what is universally in the standard ID3 tag in the media file itself?
    5) Is it safe to assume that rating, equalizer, volume, remember position and start/stop time settings for each individual track are not in the ID3 tag but only in the library file? If so, one can then assume that merely copying the library file will preserve these settings?
    6) Are ID3 tags applied and applicable to movie and audio files similarly, and do they further differ how & if they are used among each file type (mp3, m4a, aif, wav, mpg, mp4, mov, etc.)? I know with movies you cannot set or change the poster frame in mpg (muxed) files, for example.
    7) I do all my iTunes importing, editing, managment, etc. on my PowerMac desktop, with the prefs, library and xml files stored in my home folder on the PowerMac's OS drive and the large media files store on an attached ext. 500 GB FW drive. If I use a synching program to continuously keep the library/xml files the same on my iBook laptop's home folder and the media files the same on another ext. 160 GB FW drive, then when I use the iBook with the 160 GB at different events it should operate exactly the same a when using my PowerMac at home with the 500 GB? The only thing I should have to change is the location of the iTunes folder in the Prefs on the iBook to point to the 160 GB, right?
    8) Finally, now that iTunes 7 allows you to indicate sort order ("The Beatles" can now appear under "B" without writing "Beatles, The" as I have been) would it retain that sort when importing the song list into other database programs or even an iPod, or would it default back to "T"? (AppleWorks database has a similar feature where you can specify an ARTIST field which sorts by first letter of last word, but won't stay that way in other programs).
PHEW! ...long post I know, but I spent a lot of time reading and hopefully over time I can get the answers to most (or even all) of these questions. Thanks!!!
PowerMac G4/500 MHz (1 GB); iBook G4/1.33 GHz (1.5 GB)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   (still using 10.3.9 Panther on PowerMac)

I read this on the ID3 site:
ID3 tags were designed with the MP3 file format in mind. ID3v2 tags will break formats which are container-based such as Ogg Vorbis and WMA. Here is some information on specific formats:
ID3 tags work in MP3 and MP3pro files
    WAV has no tags
WMA has its own tagging format, which is specified in the wma spec, available in the MSDN (which unfortunately, basically does not allow Open Source implementations)
Ogg Vorbis uses "Xiph Comments" (same as later versions of FLAC and Speex), which are embedded into the Ogg container. You can find information on these in the comment and container specs on www.xiph.org
AAC uses yet another tagging format, which does not at present have a published spec as of 3/1/2006.
So since I rip in AAC, does that mean the tags work differently, are stored differently or offer different editable info? Also, I found nothing regarding tags for video files as I mentioned in my question. Within iTunes I am assuming all the information you may edit or view when you Get Info for each file is not all stored together: some is in the file's ID3 tag and others in the iTunes Library file. I guess you are always safe if you keep back-ups of your media files and library files, even if you don't always know which info resides where.
I found a complete list of frames (fields) that are available in ID3v2 at the following link, many not available in iTunes, but the site lists other apps that allow you to edit tags for both Mac & Windows.
    http://www.id3.org/Frames
I am curious, if you use another app to edit the tag with a frame not offered in iTunes, will it still work in iTunes (like if you use the frame for synchronized lyrics; since it is part of the tag itself will they show up when played in iTunes even though not editable in iTunes)?

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved A duplicate file name was specified

I keep my music and my library file on an external drive. I've been having this error whenever I try to download the updates for my iphone apps, and then after it's popped up once, it continues. After I quit the app, when I try to restart iTunes it won't open because of an unknown error 13014. If I trash the itunes genius and extras files, I can get iTunes to open again, but then I'm back to the library file cannot be saved problem.

    I found the solution:
first you have to locate your last library file, you can do this by clicking Edit-preferences-advanced. it will show you the itunes media folder location. then close Itunes
open your folder and locate the last library (libraries are saved with date names, find the most recent one or the one that was last modified).
change the name of the library to today´s date following the format it already has. you will have to change the name for libraries: .itl, .xml, genius and extras.
once you have changed the name to today´s date on the 4 libraries you will have to delete all other libraries existing on the same folder or on a folder named "previous itunes libraries". it is also recommended to delete the itunes "preferences file" .dat (usually 1kb) and the "sentinel" file.
so, you will have on your itunes media folder only 4 libraries: .itl .xml genius and extras.
the next step is to click the itunes icon holding the "shift" key . itunes will ask you to either "quit, choose library or create library" click on choose library. then locate the library you just renamed with today´s date and extension .itl
done, itunes will open with the last saved version of your library. keep in mind that some changes or songs will not be present if you added any while getting the error "itunes cannot save the library file. a duplicate name has been specified" just locate the songs and add them again, if you have the option "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library" checked. then go to file-add folder or file-and locate the songs missing on the itunes media folder.itunes saves the files on the hard drive but does not save the changes on the library.
    hope this is clear enough.

  • All of a sudden (video) files added to my iTunes library after a certain date aren't playable on other devices.

    hello!
All of a sudden I have a weird issue with playing video-files added to my iTunes library after a specific date.
This is the situation so far:
I encode the video for iTunes with the same settings for the last 3 years. I know these vids play on all my devices. AppleTV & iPad. All of a sudden videos added to my library after the 8th of september aren't playable on my AppleTV and iPad. I can play them directly in iTunes and by accessing them directly via the finder and quicktime.
    The following errors occur:
When I pull the video from iTunes on my AppleTV.. the video simply doesn't play.
When I pull the video from iTunes on my iPad I get a message that the file can't be found.
When I push the video from iTunes to the AppleTV using airplay I get a message that there has occured an error while connecting to the AirPlay-device "Apple TV". The necesary file could not be found. In addition when the AppleTV is switched off it doesn't turn on doing this, suggesting that there is something missing on my mac itself.
All the above errors aren't popping up when I choose a video that has been put in my library before the 9th of september. Then everything works as expected.
    This is what I tried:
Turning off and on home sharing on all devices including the mac.
Logging in wiht a different apple ID though using the same ID as before.
I created a new iTunes library and populated with a video that was added after the 8th of september and one that was added before the 9th of september. Surprisingly the older one played and not the newer one.. while they both used the same encoding settings. The new library was locally on my mac as my original library is on a NAS.
I encode my videos with Quicktime 7 Pro using the following settings:
H.264 (current frame rate, key-frames:automatic, re-order frames, automatic bitsize)
    Medium Quality
    Multi-pass
current resolution (which is always 1280 X 720)
    AAC sound
    44.100 kHz
    128kbps
I'm using the Mountain lion 10.8.2 and iTunes 10.7 Mountain lion got updated a few days after 19th of september and iTunes i think as well. Both versions were released after this issue seemed to pop up.
I also have two video-files encoded on the same day with the same settings that dragged into the iTunes library on the 9th of september. One works.. the other doesn't.
So I wonder if there is somebody out there that can tell me what might have happened here and how I could fix this issue.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.

  • A script for adding the current date to file name?

I am working in Indesign CS3. I frequently save file as PDFs into a designated folder. I was hoping for help in writing a script that would apply the current date to the end of the file name, when saved into this folder. Some days, I save the same file several times, into this folder. I was also hoping there was a way to add a date and version, for example "filename_2.25.11(1).pdf" Is this possible? Can someone help me?

ok, I ended up with this test routine:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat with this in added_items
    my checkifopened(this)
display dialog (name of this) as text
    end repeat
    end tell
    end adding folder items to
    on checkifopened(this)
set a to POSIX path of (this as alias)
    repeat until 1 = 0
    ## don't like that one because it relies on an error msg ... so
    (** try
set b to do shell script "lsof | grep " & quoted form of a
    on error
    exit repeat
    end try**)
    ##so I use this one
set b to do shell script "lsof"
if b does not contain a then
    exit repeat
    else
    say "still opened"
    end if
    end repeat
    end checkifopened
this is a folder action that tests if the added file is still opened by an application... there is no delay between each test-loop since lsof takes some time to execute...
And after adding a timeout (just in case) to this function the final script looks like this:
on adding folder items to thefolder after receiving added_items
    tell application "Finder"
set folderkind to kind of thefolder
set myfiles to every item of thefolder whose name does not contain "#" and kind is not folderkind
    repeat with myfile in myfiles
set myfile_datestring to my get_datestring(creation date of myfile)
set myfilename to name of myfile
if (count of every character of myfilename) > 4 and (character -4 of myfilename) as text is "." then
set filestatus to my checkifopened(myfile, 60)
    if filestatus = false then
display dialog "timeout on folder action"
    else
    set tmp to ((characters 1 through -5 of myfilename) & "#" & myfile_datestring & (characters -4 through -1 of myfilename)) as text
set myfilename to my checknamewith_pdfsuffix(tmp, thefolder, false)
set name of myfile to myfilename
    end if
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    end adding folder items to
    on get_datestring(mydate)
return year of mydate & "-" & (characters -2 through -1 of (("0" & (month of mydate as integer)) as text)) & "-" & (characters -2 through -1 of (("0" & (day of mydate as integer)) as text)) as text
    end get_datestring
    on checknamewith_pdfsuffix(n, D, looped)
--check if filename exists in D
    -- so if "A File.pdf" exists it names it "A File 1.pdf","A File 2.pdf",...
#n = string of the filename
#D = file reference to the directory to check
#looped = boolean used for recursive loop...
    tell application "Finder"
set thefiles to name of every item of (D as alias)
    end tell
    if thefiles contains n then
    if looped = false then
    set n to ((characters 1 through -5 of n) & "(1)" & (characters -4 through -1 of n)) as text
    my checknamewith_pdfsuffix(n, D, true)
    else
set tmp to (last word of ((characters 1 through -5 of n) as text) as integer)
set tmpcount to (count of characters of (tmp as text)) + 5
set tmp to tmp + 1
    set n to ((characters 1 through (-1 * tmpcount) of n) & "(" & tmp & ")" & (characters -4 through -1 of n)) as text
    my checknamewith_pdfsuffix(n, D, true)
    end if
    else
    return n
    end if
    end checknamewith_pdfsuffix
    on checkifopened(this, mytimeout)
    ## this file reference
    ## timeout in seconds
set a to POSIX path of (this as alias)
    set startdate to current date
    repeat until 1 = 0
    ## don't like that one because it relies on an error msg ... so
    (** try

    end if
    end repeat
    end checkifopened
to use this save this script in /Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts
and add this as a folder action to your folder...
The script processes all files inside that folder each time a new files is added...

  • SPD 2010 - How to know if a file with a given name already exists in a document library

    Hi,
I've created a workflow using SPD. One of the steps in there is changing the name of the document to a clean name. This workflow fails if a document with this same name already exists in my document library. Is there a way to check in a SPD workflow if
a document with a given name already exists in my document library ?
    Marc Nemegeer

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to know if a file with a given name already exists in a document library.
You can use a SharePoint Designer workflow to achive it.
To test to see if a document exists, you need to use condition:
    If Current List:Name  equals  [%Current Item:Title%].docx
Here is a similar thread for you to take a look at:

  • ITunes Library file cannot be saved. A duplicate file name was specified.

Every time I open up iTunes I get the error 'The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. A duplicate file name was specified.'
I've had this problem for a couple of months, tried out every solution I can find, changed the library names, recreated the library etc. Recreating the library seemed to work for a few days, but now the problem has returned. Because of this problem I can't add any new songs to my iTunes, and I cannot update any of my apps.
    Any help would be appreciated!

I also have the same problem as in the duplicate file was specified thing after opening up itunes.
But for me is the apps. I can't download or update my apps from my comp but i can do that on my iphone. I did tried to transfer purchases but it popped up about something that if i dont authorize this comp my apps will be removed. When i clicked dont authorize, it removed almost all my apps so i stopped in the middle of syncing. I click authorize and after entering my apple ID, another pop up saying that there is an error in transfering the purchases and told me to repair my itunes. I tried that too but it didnt work. I already did authorize my comp long ago. When i clicked cancel, it doesnt sync all my stuff and remains the same cause it always stuck at the apps. I tried to uninstall itunes but it says there's an error in the package thing, error code 2330. Any idea on what should i do? >_<

  • A Good Reference for Aperture, Versions, File Names, Changing & Moving

I was wondering if there is a consensus on a good reference for understanding how Aperture handles files?
    Versions and file names.
How do you change them in Aperture?
What happens if you change them in Finder?
Do I need versions? (can't I just us file names?)
What about moving the masters, or changing where there are located at in Finder?
Can I do that in Aperture?
Can I only do that in Finder?
Should I never do that in Finder?
The reason I'm looking for a good reference is because I haven't found one. The user guide (or manual) that comes with Aperture doesn't help with these issues. Search file name and nothing comes back.
I did get a copy Apple Pro Training Series book for Aperture 3. But I don't think it does a good job explaining how Aperture's file system works, especially in relation to Finder.
Rather than fill this forum with endless questions (which could be answered by reading the manual and using it the software) I'd like to get a better understanding, from a good source.
I've only used iPhoto for Mobile Publishing, ATV and now Photo Stream. I don't use it to organize my decades of photos. I don't like having all my photos inside a managed database, which I don't have to do with Aperture. I never understood why you'd want to change the name of a photo in iPhoto, when it never changes the file name. If you send it to someone, after you changed it's name, the other person gets the photo with the original (still in Finder) file name.
    Thanks.

I never understood why you'd want to change the name of a photo in iPhoto, when it never changes the file name.
This may help or not but here goes.
There's a distinction to be made between files and the data they contain. The example I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune, some lyrics, recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. The file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly that Jpeg / tiff/ raw/ whatever is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. And along with that data comes opportunities: Metadata, for a start. Exif and IPTC contain vast amounts of information - some it very basic, like the date and time the shot was taken - some of it quite complex, like a lot of details of the settings used in the camera.
Aperture, iPhoto et al are all about the data and not the file. Import the file and forget about it. Process the image - crop it, fix red eye, run it through the whole gamut of tools in the App and the file never changes at all. Create multiple versions of the image. But there's still only one file. Name it. You name the photo - and that is an entry in the Exif or IPTC. The name of the photo has nothing to do with the name of the file. Because the file is just the tin for the beans.
Even when you export, unless you specifically choose to export the Master, you are exporting the processed Photo into a different container - that's why you can export Raw as Jpeg, or Jpeg as Tiff. Because the process of export just puts the image into a new container.
Basically, if you want to manage files you need to use a File Manager. But you're using a Photo manager and expecting it to behave like a file manager.
And, of course, apps like Aperture and iPhoto have the option to use the Title of the photo as filename on export to the new file.
    Does that muddy the waters?

  • File name changes when I sync videos

As title says, when ever I load a video into my 3Gs Iphone the file name changes to a numerical one.
How do I keep the original file name?
As it is I can only sync 1 video at a time then rename it before adding another.

Oops, Just realised I put this n the wrong forum. Just to clarify this is prerecorded video files.

  • To change info in library file then info, only the most recent cd's allow me to change info, all others 14,000, do not, any ideas???

Understand to change cd info in library  File then info, as of recent only the most recent music added to my library enabled to make changes, all others (14,000) do not highlight change categories, that is gray not black. Any suggestions.

I suspect a permissions problem. This can happen when a library is moved between systems or the system is upgraded to a new version of Windows.
Right-click on your main iTunes folder (or ithe Tunes Media folder if that is elsewhere) and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.
