Adding EXIF shoot date to scanned images

Hi
I have a bunch of scanned images from the analog times.
I am looking for a tool to easily add EXIF shoot date information to these scanned images (batch mode) so that LR shows them correctly and easier work with.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Franz

LR has a command, Metadata > Edit Capture Time, that will make batch changes to the capture time ("shoot time") of one or more images.  But it has two significant problems when used with scanned images:
- In LR 3.4, it will silently overwrite any existing Date Time Digitized, permanently losing that metadata.
- It can't change a batch of images to the exact same time -- rather, the command adds an offset to the existing times of all the images (and LR uses the file's modification time in the case of scans with no existing capture time).
Instead, you might consider the CaptureTime To Exif plugin:

  • Printing problem linked to EXIF time data for JPEG images.

For some years I have been using Photoshop Elements 8.0 with no problems of any kind. My computer runs on XP Professional with a system comfortably in excess of the minimum requirements to run Elements 8.0. I load my images into Elements from a card reader which is the same one since I got this version of Elements. I shoot mostly in JPEG with a Nikon D300. I print to one of 2 Epson printers, an SX100 and a PX700W. I don't use the wireless feature of the PX700W, connecting it via USB.
About a year ago I suddenly began to experience printing problems. If I tried to print an image Elements crashed just at the point where printing would begin. By trial & error I discovered that if I adjusted the time in the EXIF data of the image in Elements, whether by advancing or retarding it by hours or days and then adjusted it back to the original time I had no problems printing that image thereafter.
I also discoveredc that where I had shot in RAW I could print direct from the RAW image in Elements or from the JPEG I saved from an edited in RAW and had no problems.
I saw the forum discussions about the issues about the date/time in EXIF having been changed following the import into Elements. For those images I still had on my memory cards I checked the EXIF data in Elements and compared it what was on the image on the card. They were the same. I also checked the time zone and time settings of the camera and they were correct.
I backed up my catalog, re-formatted the computer to bring it back to its ex-factoy status, re-installed Elements and restored my catalog. I imported new images, tried to print them and the problem was still there.
Before I might upgrade to Photoshop Elements 10 I'm hoping someone else may tell me they have had the same problem and, hopefully, be able to tell me how they fixed it. I know the workaround will bypass the problem but it really annoys me that it suddenly appeared and I seem to be stuck with it. I'm also concerned that, given I totally re-formatted my computer but the problem  is still with me, that the problem may be imbedded in my catalog and simply gets backed up to,\and restored from,  my backup.
I'd be grateful for any ideas.

    Hi Miceal,
Though I'm not sure, but see if Catalog repair and optimize helps resolve the issue.
For doing this, click File >> Catalog and selec your catalog and then click "repair' button.
Tick the checkbox for rebuilding indices in the repair workflow.
Now perform the optimize operation on the catalog similarly.
Let me know if that helps.
    Thanks

  • Nikon Shooting Data & Caption Field in Lightroom

I have a Nikon D100 Camera and am still using Nikon View 6.0.0.  I have thousands of pictures shot with this camera.  I have always filled out certain fields in Nikon View's IPTC.  I did misinterpret a Nikon Transfer Option long ago.  ("Nikon Transfer" is for transferring the digital photos from camera to computer.  The term "Shooting Data is their term for EXIF data, I guess.  Like Shutterspeed, Focal Length etc...)  I mistakenly checked the box that said, 'Copy Shooting Data to the IPTC Caption field.  At the time I didn't quite understand this and thought it meant if you checked this box you would have all the Shooting Data Available to be read by other programs in the future.  (The only way it would be available.) I don't think this is the case now because I transferred a new photo to my computer without this box being checked and I still got all the Shooting Data in Nikon View's window, I just didn't get it in the IPTC box.  The Shooting EXIF Data is still inside the photo's file (or in a sidecar). without it turning up in the IPTC box. Yes?
I've downloaded a tiny free program, for now, that that reads and displays digital photo metadata.  Everything works fine.  My keywords come through in the program's keyword field and my file names.   The only thing is that when I call up the Caption field in this little program it first brings up the text that I originally entered in Nikon Views IPTC, like it should.  But then directly after that I get[#Beginning of Shooting Data Section]ONikon D100OFocal Length:.......ect. ect...listing all of the shooting data, then[#End of Shooting Data Section].  All of this is listed after my caption text!  I just wanted what I entered in the IPTC as a caption!  Not the shooting data!
All of the Shooting Data is fused with the Caption that I originally entered in the IPTC!   Because
I originally checked that Transfer Options Box.  I've asked another person if you could somehow separate the Caption from the Shooting Data by computer language?  He didn't know as yet.  He said, "Try and separate it in Nikon View."  I did.
My questions are:  I have some thousands of photos now with all the Shooting Data as part of the Caption.  When I import these photos into Lightroom and Lightroom's  Metadata Panel automatically fills in with the photos metadata information, will the Caption field be the Caption and Shooting Data together?  Will my EXIF Shooting Data turn up under the right EXIF field in Lightroom's Metadata Panel?  Should I not use the Lightroom IPTC Metadata Panel and use another?  If the Shooting Data is still part of the Caption in Lightroom, because there is so much of it, will it just run out of space and run out the end of the box?  Is there a way to separate my  Caption from the Shooting Data so Lightroom will not include the Shooting Data in Lightroom's Metadata Panel under Caption?  I have been studying from a Lightroom 2 book.  I am not acquainted with Lightroom 4.  But I will be buying Lightroom 4.
Thank You so much for any information on this,
    Thank You
    Sandy

    Sandy,
I suspect that you'll have the same problems in Lightroom. It sounds like Nikon View has put that shooting data where you don't want it.
In any case, you can download a 30-day free trial of LR 4.1 and import a few of the problematic images and see how their metadata looks in Lightroom. It won't cost you anything, not even time if you decide to buy. And if you do buy the program, you can just enter the serial number in the trial version, and it will no longer expire.

  • Blank exif date time original field in some files (scanned images)

I have had some issues with scanned files or psd files where the date time original field does not exist or is blank. Mostly with scanned files. I would like to edit the field and fix the date; but the EXIF doesn't exist on scanned images or is a shorter data set excluding the date time original field.

Lightroom won't update or insert missing EXIF date fields into master files. However, if you export a file with a date/time edited in Lightroom, it will have valid EXIF date/time fields.

  • Geotagged iPhone Images lose exif location data

Geotagged iPhone Images lose exif location data when emailed or IM'ed to an email address.
I would like to have the option of sending this data (even if not by default) to the recipient.
This feature seems to work on android and I am receiving this data in my inbox from an Android phone. The last thing I want to tell my customers is that the system I am building for them is only compatible with the Android because of this bug.
Product roadmap information or workarounds are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the quick response.
There are some other apps that allow for exporting Geo Data to SMS (one example is called "GeoDataToSms" iirc). I'm subtly disappointed that third party apps would be the only solution here. I can build an app, but its adding complexity that I would rather not be worried about.
I want my audience to send an email or SMS to an email account. That simple. The emails are then collected and the information from the message (images, exif data) is recorded in a database. When an admin visits the site they can see each image in a map and act on it. Stupid simple right?
I think being able to email full blown photos is good enough for this round. But I think the expectation for most users (that even know geo data exists) is that geo data will be sent no matter the chosen image size. The same imo is true for SMS. I just have to limit the expectations when my users are on an iPhone. I can build an app that handles geolocation data in round twelve. And just let my iPhone audience know that their devices' cool features are limited by the software that powers them.

  • How to highlight / draw onto a pdf document that is a scanned image, then save the added elements

    Hello
I'd like to add markings / little annotations or highlight as if with a color marker various sections of a scanned image that has been sent to me in pdf format, which I visualize with Adobe Reader 9 on my PC (Windows). I need to save the changes and then send it back by e-mail to the original sender.
So far I've been awkwardlky making copies of my screen (PrintScreen function) of each individual page of the pdf document, then pasting them into PowerPoint slides, then using various PPT drawing and textbox functions to add my stuff to the, now, PPT file, which then I sent back as such. This is very time-consuming and ridiculous and there's got to be another way of adding these changes within Adobe Reader or another similar software, doesn't it?
Again, the pdf docs that I need to work on are scanned images (medical charts), not actual copiable text (pardon my ignorance of the correct terminology to explain this).
    Thank you for your help,
    Falingo

    So the solutions are:
    1. "Buy Acrobat"....which Adobe Acrobat ?....Stanard, Pro, etc (...obviously I'd like the most basic and cheapest...which one is that?)
    or
    2. "Enable doing that in the Reader"....how exactly am I supposed to do that?

  • PSE 8 editor changing exif creation date

When I bought a new Dell duo-core computer with Windows 7 I upgraded from PSE 6 to 8.  Since then, the editor in 8 sometimes replaces the exif creation date with the date and time it was modified.  It isn't keeping the first and adding the second as date modified, just replacing it when I save a photo from the editor.  It isn't doing that every time, so I can't figure out what would cause this.  In two days in March, my exif creation date in 500-600 photos, many of which I didn't edit at all, were changed to either March 20 or March 21, 2010.  Any idea how I can prevent this from happening?  Hint:  it appears as though all the photos affected were taken with an Olympus point and shoot or were scanned to PSE 6's Organizer.  I can't find any photos from my DSLR that have been affected.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it didn't help.  I lost another photo today and had to retrieve it
for the Organizer from my Windows files.  Instead of placing it next to the original photo (or in the same area), it placed it in a file called Adobe/Photoshop.com.  I made sure again that the line you referred to isn't checked.  In addition, when the photo doesn't get lost, the Exif date for the photo does get lost and the photo is dated today.  These two problems seem to be connected, although I can never predict which one will occur.  Anybody have more ideas?  Could it be a Windows 7 issue rather than a Photoshop issue?

  • Disk Utility: What does "scan image for restore" do?

Before restoring a disk image, I know that I need to use Disk Utility's "Scan Image for Restore…" feature.
Exactly what does this feature do?

    I asked because I didn't know.
I was helping someone upgrade his PowerMac G5 from the original 80GB hard drive to a 1TB drive.
Since the G5 can accommodate two internal drives, I could have simply added the new drive and used Disk Utility's "restore" feature to migrate his data directly from the old drive to the new drive.
But it was more convenient for me to work at home so I removed the old drive, and brought it home along with the new drive.
I couldn't connect both drives to my MacBook Pro, since I only have one SATA drive dock. So I did it like this:
    1. Connected the old drive to my SATA dock.
    2. Create a disk image from his old drive, saving it to an external USB drive.
    3. Disconnected the old drive from the SATA dock and connected the new one.
    4. Restore the disk image to the new drive
Of course, when I tried step 4, I got an error message about needing to do a scan first. That's what led me to this question.
I have a follow-up question: When I created the image, I didn't bother changing the default image format, which is "compressed." If I had given the matter a little thought, I could have created a read-only image, since I would never need to change the image.
If I had used read-only, would Disk Utility have created the checksums on-the-fly when it created the disk image?

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
(Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?
    If anyone can help, THANKS!
    2012 MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.3)

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • "Insufficient data for an image" when saving a file

    I'm running Acrobat 9.5.0 on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.8.
After scanning a document from my Canon MX882, or opening and editing an existing pdf I get the following error when I try to save the file:
    Insufficient data for an image
When I try to save the file again, I get this:
The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (109).
Sometimes the error also has (8) instead of (109).
When this occurs, the thumbnail of the page appears correct in the left pane; however, the content of the page itself is entirely or partially missing.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    -c

I am also having this problem, especially with scanned documents. Since I need to download scanned documents in my work this is a big problem!Sometimes I can read but not save the document, sometimes one or two of the pages will be blank from the start. I have the latest version of Adobe Reader XI (11.0.10). I tried reducing the page zoom, a suggested workaround on this page: Acrobat: “Insufficient data for an image” error after updating to 10.1.4 or 9.5.2,  but that did not help at all. FWIW I use a Windows 8.1 PC with 4 GB RAM. I usually download PDFs from the internet using Firefox.

  • Error when opening legitimate documents "Insufficient data for an image"

I work for a company who has sold "downloadable resources" via PDF for years now. We created a large batch of PDF documents in 2003 with
Adobe Acrobat 6.0 paper capture, and these are all PDF 1.5 type documents. We've provided these resources for years, however just today we were notified by a user that upon downloading the file they get a message "Insufficient data for an image". These ARE NOT HACKED PDF's. and they worked fine until 9.0. I have tried 9.0 and 9.1, on multiple computers and have confirmed this issue.
Now we are stuck with hundreds of PDF's that won't open in 9.x.
I did try downloading a free demo of "PDF-TOOLS" Recovery & Analysis tool, and I open the file using that program, scan the file - TELLS ME ALL IS OK, then resave it using that program.
Only then can I open it in 9.x.
What are we to do now short of buying a $200 tool and taking perhaps several days of time to open and save hundreds of "previously working" PDF files???

RollingRocker, did you ever get a solution for this? I am having the same problem. I produce a pdf using a JSF third party api called flying saucer, which actually uses itext to produce the pdf. I can attempt to produce the same exact pdf over and over and about 85% of the time the error occurs and the rest of the time the pdf opens successfully with no error. Obviously 15% of the time the reader is completely happy with this pdf, so it is not a malicious document in any way.

  • Photoshop Album 2.0 - Can I change Photo shooting dates

My friend gave me Photoshop Album 2.0 to help her keep track of her pictures.  Problem is, she didnt set her camera to the right date, so some of the pictures have a "shoot" date that is not correct.  For example, the camera may have imprinted June 1, but we know because of the content of the picture that it actually was August 21.  So, can I manually correct these dates for her?
Thanks for any help you can give me?
I know that I can get the new trial version, but she uses the calendar version that is on the old 2.0 and wants to stick with it.

You can use PhotoInfo to change the dates on a single or batch of photos. You can even do it within iPhoto by selecting PhotoInfo as the editor to use when you double click on a photo. But iPhoto won't recognize the changes unless it's exported and reimported. You can use PhotoInfo to batch check/change your photos before importing into iPhoto.
What I've done is to export the full sized images to a folder on the desktop, named the folder the same as the roll they were in, run Photoinfo on the batch and then drag the folder into the open iPhoto. Then delete the original roll. Works fine.

  • PDF from postscript (ps2pdf) displays "Insufficient data for an image" error in Reader

    Hello,
I'm not fully confident this is the best place for this, but I'll start here. Note that this is NOT the same as the issue that was recently fixed in Reader 11 (found at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/insufficient-data-image.html)
I am using the command "ps2pdf" (using Ghostscript) to convert postscript files to PDF. To get better quality, I use the ps2pdf options "-dAutoFilterColorImages=false -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode", which force lossless encoding for color images. However, there are images on certain pages that yield the error "Insufficient data for an image" when opened in Adobe Reader XI (current version), and the image on that page is not viewable (or rather, it can be viewed, but only until you get the whole image on the screen; then the image disappears). If the PDF is printed, the image will not print. The error also occurs in Acrobat 9.4.0, and possibly other versions. However, Reader 8 displays the files with no issues. Also, Foxit reader displays the PDF files fine.
The postscript files are screenshots generated by the user dragging a box to define the area of the screen to be printed to file. This issue only occurs for some size boxes that the user draws; others come out fine and are read by Reader just fine.
This only happens when using FlateEncode; using lossy JPEG compression (e.g. the default ps2pdf output) does not yield files that produce the error.
Here are some example files to demonstrate the issue (hey, maybe the issue is not even reproducible for other people! That would be helpful to know if true, so even if you can't help solve the problem, if you could verify whether this issue occurs when you open one of these files in Reader or Acrobat, it would awesome).
bad pdf where error occurs: http://www.mediafire.com/file/zbk36yfy7vrhvhw/gmbad.pdf
good pdf (very similar, but slightly different box drawn): http://www.mediafire.com/file/649fuxul0td5bsx/gmgood.pdf
    Merged good and bad: http://www.mediafire.com/file/54nwwebh3da7p9w/good_and_bad.pdf
If anyone has any ideas on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if you think this isn't the right place for this, and perhaps know of a better place for my question, I'd appreciate that too. Thanks!
    Additional possibly relevant information:
ps2pdf is being run using Ghostscript 8.15 on Unix Solaris 10. I also ran the same postscript files through ps2pdf (again using Ghostscript 8.15) on a Windows 7 machine, and the resulting PDFs did not exhibit the same errors when opened in Reader or Acrobat.
Adobe Reader 8 and 11, and Foxit were run on Windows 7. Acrobat 9.4.0 was run through a Citrix server, and I'm not sure what version of Windows it runs on.
I tried lots of different options in ps2pdf, and also tried running the postscript through ghostscript directly (using the "gs" command). Nothing was able to eliminate the error without resorting to using lossy JPEG compression.
I am now using lossy (but fairly high quality) JPEG compression in the workflow, accepting the loss in quality and (paradoxically) doubled filesize of the JPEG-compressed PDF files, so I'm really just pursuing this to figure out what the heck is going on, not because it is mission critical.
Postscript files used to create the above pdfs:
    bad: http://www.mediafire.com/file/v656dp45h2jeyj6/gmbad.ps
    good: http://www.mediafire.com/file/47sn60dgbzbxrs6/gmgood.ps
The .ps files are very similar to each other, differing only in the image content and the image location/translation.
The postscript files give multiple warnings/errors when opened in gsview (this happens with all .ps files created by Pinnacle, not just the ones giving me issues).
The program that is used to create the postscript files is Philips (Adac) Pinnacle^3, a treatment planning system for radiation oncology.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  Our application uses scanned images up to 10 years old, and there are thousands of images so we cannot rescan these unfortunately.
I work in a large organisation with it's own desktop team so unfortunately I can't upgrade the version of Reader on our user's machines to see if this resolves either.  The desktop team will also not upgrade the version as the problem appears to have only started in 9.5.2.
Does anyone know how I can confirm if the problem was first seen in 9.5.2 or if there were instances in 9.5.1 also?
    Thanks again
