Adding extra internal USB ports

I need to add more USB ports to my Mac Pro. Is it a case of buying a PCI Express USB card? They sell on Amazon for nearly £40, which seems high, but they don't mention OS X compatibility?
Thanks in advance.

Any will or might do, but many can also interfere with sleep, wake from sleep freezing, and other issues
http://www.macsales.com has PCI Express cards.
Aaxeon has USB2 but their FW cards are known to keep fan still running and therefore not "deep sleep" mode.

  • Apple USB keyboard does not work with one internal usb port

    Hi everyone,
hope someone can help me to solve my problem. I have a MPB13 retina late 2013 since something like 3 months. I have additional screen (dell), usb wired keyboard (apple) and BT magic mouse.
Since a few days, my usb keyboard does not work well. It only want to work properly when plugged to the rights side usb port internal port and not anymore on the left one. It also work on a usb external concentrator. Before, I had no problem, it worked perfectly. There was no problem such as cofee on it...
After searching the web on such problem, I tries a few things such as:
I tried the keyboard on another computer (windows): works fine
I tried usb stick and external DVD reading on the left internal usb ports: works fine
I switch the MPB off and turn it back on: the usb keyboard still does not work on the left usb port
I tried the SMC and PRAM reset : nothing
    Any idea ??
    Thanks

  • 945P internal USB port problem

Power exceeded on USB Port 945P motherboard - NO DEVICES CONNECTED
Part Number: MSI 945P Platinum Socket 775
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 640, 3.2 GHz
    Memory: Corsair 512MBx2 PC4300 DDR2 533MHz
    Operating System: XP Pro
On the motherboard, I have added more external USB port (case mounted), these ports are connected to the mobo on the connector JUSB2.
Now, Windows gives an error stating that the power has been exceeded and must reset or close the port.
There is no device connected to these USB ports, only the wires that lead from JUSB2 connector to the case mounted USB ports.
Did any of you had the same problem?? Thanks.

Have you checked to see if the USB, that is mounted to the Front of the case has any Shorts?
You might also want to remove the USB that is plugged into the Header on the MOBO.
One more thing you might have hooked up the USB header wrong.

  • Internal usb port?

I am looking for an internal usb port on the MAC pro motherboard. seems the Express 34/54 card requires a usb connection in addition to placing the card in one of the PCIe slots. The card manufacturer refers to the USB internal connection as an internal header. Not sure what this means but it would be nice to have an Express 34 PCIe card in the machine---using it with the new Sony SXS video cards.
any idea if the MB has one of these connections?

thanks for the info. as I explained, I was trying to install an Express 34/54 reader card into one of the PCIe slots on a Mac Intel. There are cards out there, but they come with an additional usb cable that you must connect from the card (mini-usb connector) to the mother board (a female 5-pin connector--single row).
another solution is to buy the external sony device for $220. (Express 34/54 to USB2) which is an external housing enclosing the same card with a supplied AC adapter. This format will be a major format in the future for shooting video, so I hope someone develops a cheaper solution.
    thanks for the help

  • Using a PCI card INTERNAL USB port

Hello to anyone reading this !
I've just installed a PCI card in my G5 in order to add more USB ports. When I started searching for one, i was surprised to see most had an internal port, I couldn't really see the use of that. A friend told me it can be used on PCs to plug an extension towards a free port in front of the main unit.
Considering i can't do this on my G5, I was wondering how to take advantage of this internal port and I'd like to know if I can plug my USB Bluetooth adapter, as it doens't need to be visible and it would free one of my external ports. The question is, are there some security restrictions regarding what you put INSIDE the unit? Isn't it too hot inside to leave the bluetooth key or anything else that is not designed to be inside?
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance
    iVince

With all the airflow in a G5, I don't think heat will be a problem, but a Bluetooth unit probably will not be useful inside a shielded metal case. The Apple Bluetooth card connects to an antenna wire that goes outside the shielded section, but I don't think there is any way to connect that wire to the USB Bluetooth module.

  • MAC PRO Internal USB ports stopped working

Hello, I have a mac pro 8 core with an USB internal ports problem, the 2 in front are not working anymore, and from the 3 in the back only the middle one is working.
I tried to pull all the power out for a whole night, resetting the pram and nvram but nothing helps.
When for example I put in a keyboard in one of the ports that is not working and when I power up the machine and I press the ALT key I get the choice of startup preferences, once I select one, and the system boots up the ports stops working, so before the OS loads the usb ports are working !!!
    What to do ??

This is a hardware failure. While USB ports on the whole are just not designed very well, leading to their failures being pretty common, your issue sounds a bit more like the USB controller chip is failing.
In any case, the answer is to take it to a repair shop. If they're smart about it, they'll replace the logic board and see if that also fixes the front ports. If not, they'll replace the front I/O panel as well.

  • Using the extra internal usb 3.0 header on a K430

My K430 came with 2 front panel usb 3.0 ports BUT I noticed there is an extra 12 pin usb 3.0 header on the motherboard. I plugged in a standard 10 pin usb cable and the ports work BUT only at usb 2.0 speeds. I imagine that's because of the usb 2.0 header I'm using.  The front panel ports are also 12 pin and they work fine so if I could find a Lenovo usb 3.0 12 pin cable I'd have 2 extra 3.0 ports and that would be GREAT! Anyone know how to find the part number for that cable or how to acquire one?
           Thanks!

  • Tecra S11-15T - GPRS modem doesn't work on internal USB port

My GPRS moden only works when I plug it into the dockingstation's USB port or if I use a USB port hub. If I plug it directly into the USB port on the laptop, I get an unknown device displayed in the device manager.
I have tried re-installing the chipset of my Toshiba Tecra S11-15T. I cannot get the device to work directly from the laptop's USB ports. I have WIN XP Professional.

    Hi
Maybe the USB port does not provide enough power to get the modem working.
But all ports support the USB standards and every USB port is able to provide 500mA.
    Possibly the modem needs more.
You can try to disable the USB power saving option.
In device manager, click right on USB root hub and go to Properties.
Then choose Power Management tab and uncheck the option; Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

  • Add more usb ports

I have the microsoft arc mouse and keyboard and each of them have seperate transrecievers. The macbook air only has two ports. If I bought a usb hub would this enable me to plug the transrecievers into the hub so I would have 1 usb port free? Or is there no way to do this?
    Thanks.
Im considering returning them and getting logtech's unifying transreciever, but they have no small keyboards that are compatible with it:(

RF/Bluetooth dongles and small flash drives are very low power, and provided the USB hub itself isn't a power hog, you should have no problem using an unpowered USB hub to connect those two transeivers to the Air.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago. It's ideal for a MBA user, as it is small enough to fit right in with the portability of the Air. And I have never had a problem with two transceiver dongles or two flash drives.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817732001
Sadly though, it appears that Griffin stopped making them when the Air added an additional USB port on the 2010 edition.
But there are still a myriad of miniature 2 and 4 port unpowered/self powered hubs that should work just fine for you.

  • DSX-S310BTX Media Player: How Do You Need To Label mp3 Files On Flash Drive To Search Internal USB?

I have a DSX-S310BTX Media Player.  I'm connecting a Flash Drive to the Internal USB port of this device.  On the flash drive the mp3 files are labled by Title, Contributing Artist and Album.  However, when a song is playing, the main display doesn't show the name of the song, and I can only do a "File & Folder" search by individual songs, but not by artist or album.  Is there a specific way I need to label the files on the flash drive to be able to search the flash drive by song, artist and album?

    Hi Triton,
You may try renaming files in your USB flash drive by title of the song first.
    Thanks.

  • Dropped Frames on Capture/ Adding extra USB buses to a G5

    Hello,
I am having trouble with dropped frames on capture. It is a problem I have dealt with many times. I always try to capture my media to some sort of external drive; It always seems to work fine until the drive fills up(to about 20 GB left), and then I start to get dropped frames problems. I've tried freeing up space on the drive, but once it starts it seems that even freeing up space doesn't fix the problem. I was told that adding a USB bus can fix this problem -OR- You can add an extra internal storage drive to the G5. Once upon a time I did the latter and it worked, but now I can not even capture onto my extra internal drive?
My capture attempts seem to get about 5 minutes before I get dropped frames.
Do you think that installing an extra Bus could fix this problem? If so what kind of Bus should I look for for a PowerMac G5?
I am running FCP 4.5, Mac OSX 3.9, Quicktime 7(In the past this has not been an issue), I am using a Power Mac G5- two 160GB internal drives.
Much Thanks in Advance, the Help is always fantastic around here,
    Justin

A USB bus or a FW bus?
Because USB drives are not fast enough to sustain capture.
Adding a PCI Firewire card from a place like Sonnettech may work.

I would like to backup my external HD with Time Machine in the HD of TC. Is it possible?
    Sorry, but not possible.
Time Machine can only back up the internal drive(s) in a Mac....or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac via USB or FireWire.....provided that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I am not recommending this, but you might be able to move the drive from the USB port to the Mac, and have Time Machine back it up that way.....then move it back to the USB port on the Time Capsule......but this will involve doing some risky things.....and manually changing settings around everytime you make the swap. Something will surely go wrong....but up to you if you want to try it.
Carbon Copy Cloner will back up the drive connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule to the Time Capsule disk, but these will not be Time Machine backups.  SuperDuper claims to also be able to do this.....but I have not tested it.

  • Mac Pros extra two internal sata ports broken since Leopard 10.5??

I have a Mac Pro and according to xlr8yourmac.com and the newertech website, there are four sata ports for your hard drives PLUS an additional two more sata ports directly on the motherboard. Through a complicated and difficult disassembly, it is possible to dissect your mac pro and install their cable which they sell for about $30, and get at the rear of your mac pro housing connectors for these two internal sata ports. In short, it's nothing more than an extension cable that fits into a neat housing at the back of the mac pro. You can then plug up to two esata drives into those jacks and they are basically hooked into the macpro motherboard. I ordered this cable and it worked splendidly since 10.4.8 and for 10.4.9 without any issue (that I could tell). I was even able to raid them together etc etc. (edit to be clear I mean I had two Lacie 500Gb drives with esata, firewire 800, 400 and USB 2 on them).
When I installed 10.5 it was all broken!! What a disaster. I can't use these drives on the firewire bus (which by the way they work fine on) because I am already tieing up that with other devices and drives. I need these extra two buses, plus they were **** fast before- I guess it's the same bus as the internal drives get.
I have contacted Lacie - no luck - and also newertech, and did so again today, but so far no luck, and apple, no luck and even submitted a feedback request back when we were on 10.5.1 (just released at that time), and no luck. I hoped 10.5.2 would restore this functionality.
I was told Apple do not normally go out of their way to kill unintended functionality but could this be the case on this occasion?

www.xlr8yourmac.com its over my head but...
A Copy of the April 23rd, 2007 news page post is below (in reply to eSATA Extender cables (w/PCI slot bracket) from Newer Tech for use with the 2 unused ports on the Mac Pro motherboard.)
" this may be of some interest for your readers.
From the Intel 631xESB/632xESB I/O Controller Hub data sheet:
    "Hot-Plug Operation
Dynamic Hot-Plug (for example, surprise removal) is not supported by the SATA host controller. However, using the PCS register configuration bits and power management flows, a device can be powered down by software, and the port can then be powered off, allowing removal and insertion of a new device. "
(I asked if he knew of any way to do that in OS X.)
the SATA controller does support AHCI mode, which enables hot plugging (same as with the raid southbridges ICH6R - ICH8R which support hot plugging with raid drivers from Intel without Intel assuring this).
But it does not support AHCI if the PATA port is used as in the Mac Pro. And without AHCI there is no way to do hot plugging.
Using a SATA DVD drive may not mean AHCI is used automatically. The controller has to be switched from IDE to AHCI mode. Maybe the Mac Pro does it on startup or some EFI specialist can finds out how to do that.
BTW Tiger can handle an ICH8R in AHCI mode on all SATA ports without a problem.
    Kind regards,
    Martin S. "
Info/Tips on using Spare SATA Ports with Windows: (from Jan 15th, 2008 news page) This may have come up in the past and I'd forgotten it (don't own a Mac Pro yet) but in reply to a post yesterday (1/15/2008) on the Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray reader/Superdrive combo drive, a reader mentioned the spare SATA ports are not usable in Windows XP at least with the standard drivers with Bootcamp. (Most readers have used the ports in OS X although I've not searched drive db reports for anyone that mentioned using Bootcamp/Windows also. BTW - The spare ports are bootable for OS X use, as noted in this article - although drives are not shown/usable when booted from Windows with standard drivers.)
(Update) Here's a reader mail w/tips on using the spare ports with Windows via a replacement chipset driver install and grub bootloader edit:
" after finding this thread in the onmac forums I finally was able to get my pioneer sata drive to work under bootcamp. Basically you have to do the following:
    - Install Win XP and ubuntu linux with a pata dvd drive in XP, change the ide 2680 driver to the intel ahci driver found here (downloadcenter.intel.com) S5000 Based Server AHCI SATA Storage Driver for Windows.
    - Boot into ubuntu and change the stage1 file of the grub bootloader to this:
    http://www.olofsson.info/grub/stage1
This keeps the mac pro in ahci mode when booting a foreign OS
Now you can boot windows using the linux partition, this will start grub and keep the mac pro in the correct mode
I also installed Refit to make things a little easier but as far as i know using Alt key when booting should work too.
if anyone tries this and has any questions feel free to ask
    -Forrest"

  • Adding USB ports to mac pro

    Hi,
i was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to fit more usb ports in the back of the Mac Pro?
I got my mac pro about 4/5 years ago, and could really use some more ports.
Thanks for any help and advice,

What's wrong with using a hub?
    A few things:
With a hub, all devices must share the bandwidth of the one built-in port the hub is on. If one device on the hub takes up all the port bandwidth, too bad for the others. Or they will fight it out. But with most types of USB cards, each individual port on the card gets full USB bandwidth...no conflicts.
You need to use up a built-in USB port to plug in a hub, so adding a 4-port hub only gives you 3 more new ports in reality. With a USB card, all card ports are in addition to the Mac Pro ports.
A hub needs to take up one more outlet on your power strip. Or two or three outlets if it has a big transfomer. A USB card uses the Mac Pro power supply directly with no additional messy power and data cables.
A hub probably doesn't cost that much less than a USB card, if there is any price difference at all, yet the card has so many more advantages.
About the only reason to not get a USB card is that you've already used up the slots in your Mac Pro.
