Adding Filters To Still Images Makes Them Blurry

Has anybody experienced this?
I am working on a photo gallery and simply adding "ANY" filter such as drop shadow or roughen edges blurs the photo. If you toggel the effect on and off you can see the difference in quality.
It happens to either format "Tif or Jpeg" These are images with scale keyframes applied.
I actully noticed this in CS2 also. I guess it carried over to CS4.

Vista 64 bit (Clean Install)

I've not experienced this in either 2.0 or CS3.

  • Importing images makes them blurry and jaggy

Yes I have seen other posts on this. They were helpful and I progressed, but imported images still aren't right. I'm sure there must be just one small thing I'm doing wrong. Please help!
I imported DV NTSC footage (720x480, 0.9091 PAR). I have screenshots from Powerpoint slides that I want to overlay.
In Premiere they are blurry and jaggy. As you can see the original footage is fine, but when it's dropped in a sequence it's bad:
The interpretation seems to be okay:
I've created it correctly in Photoshop. You can see below that the file is 720x480px and I have the DV PAR set:
My output is for computer screens so when I export from DV to H.264 I select Field Order: None. But I noticed that if I export with Field Order: Lower the screenshot/image looks good. However the rest of my DV footage looks interlaced, so I need Field Order set to none.
Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? It shouldn't be this hard to get sharp looking images into Premiere!
    Thanks.

Both my playback and paused resolutions are both full so that isn't the problem.
If it looked crappy in Premiere while building up the video I wouldn't care. It's the fact that it also looks like that in the exported that's the problem.
I'm sure it's some small thing I'm doing wrong like getting the framesize or PAR wrong, except that it's not those settings.
    Any other ideas?

  • Importing images makes them blurry and jaggy (CS4)

Hello - I've just upgraded to Premiere CS4 but am having the same problem.  When I import DV video from my camera, it is blurred and shows interlace problems.  I'm curious as to why this would be; I never had these sort of problems on Premiere 2.0.  I've set the project up as a DV project, and have tried projects with both upper or lower interlace settings.  One thing I noticed is that the native pixel size for DV is slightly different on CS4 than on Prem 2.0; it is 1.067 on Prem 2.0 and something like 1.09 on CS4.  I've tried everything I can think of and can't fix the problem.

Just judging the quality from experience of working on premiere with uncompressed files.  I changed the settings on the viewer to highest quality, which has made the images sharper, so it's possibly just those settings on the viewer.  But the interlacing is still extremely visible on my capture window, much more than I think it ever was on 2.0.  I also feel like the image is a little skippy sometimes in its movement.  I just took a huge amount of files off my computer, so the computer is running clean and fast.  When I export the files to VLC, the interlacing is also noticeable. I feel like it's a simple problem with the import settings, or with the settings when I set up a project.   But I've checked that it's PAL, I've tried both upper and lower-field interlacing, etc.  I'm doing things the same way I did with 2.0, so I'm confused why there is an interlace problem.
    thanks
How are you judging the quality?

  • Adding a photo/still image to start of movie freezes on that image and doesn't transition to rest of movie

I have basically completed my movie with images, audio clips and background audio.  I want to add one more still image to the start of the movie but when I do that and try to play my movie, it freezes on that one image I just added (yet continues to play the audio for the rest of the movie).  I took my problem to the Apple store today and they had no clue how to fix (said it must be a bug) and just suggested I export the movie then import it again into a new movie.  But when I do that I lose the quality of the images considerably.  I am 99% done with the movie and just need this title image inserted in.
Any ideas why this might be happening or how to resolve without re-building the entire movie again?

    Some things to try.
    1) shut down iMovie and turn off your Mac. Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. This will give iMovie the maximum amount of memory available.
    2) Have you tried sharing the movie? Does the problem exist in the shared version?
    3) What kind of image and what are the dimensions? e.g. JPEG 4000x6000

  • Adding a reflection to images makes the image not there on web!

Sorry, wasn't sure how to narrow this down in the subject header, but when I add the refelction effect for an image on a webpage, when I visit the published site, and try to drag or right click on the image to open it in another window or drag it from the website to my desktop, I only get the reflection and not the actual image. If I turn the reflection effect off, and reload the page, I can get to the image. Does this have something to do with the Forward or Backward commands in iWeb editor? I think I tried both and saw no changes on the problem.

droppedpic1.jpg SOUNDS like dragging and dropping from one app to another, but usually these get assigned droppedImage.tiff or .pdf. If you're dragging from the Finder to iWeb, it takes Finder's name. If you're dragging from another app, since it doesn't have a filename AND iWeb has to give it a filename (to save in the Domain.sites file), it could be assigned something like you see there. I've had problems with these generic names in the past so even though I CAN drag and drop, I usually copy, paste into Preview then save it with the filename I want it to have. Much easier to keep track of the right images that way.
Think of it this way, anyone trying to swipe your image won't be able to do it with a click and drag I'm going to have to do some playing around because while I've seen the imageEffectsBelow like on the buttons on this page (just grabbed one at random)
    http://web.mac.com/simonhellwig/iWeb/portfolio/hellwig.html
I haven't seen an unresized reflection. So I'll create one
If you create a hyperlink to a .jpg, then it'll open in a separate window OR the user can click to download it as well.

I have added a few still images to my iMovie HD movie project, using the Media/Photos tabs in iMovie. The images are JPEGs in my iPhoto library. I place the images in the timeline, but when I export the iMovie project to my video camera or to an MPEG file, the images disappear. Any suggestions welcome.

While you may get a better response regarding your camera export in the iMovie HD forum, I am intrigued by your loss converting to MPEG. Could you be more specific regarding your work flow for this process?

  • Still jpg photos are blurry in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

    Hi everyone,
Please help!  I am somewhat new to Adobe Premiere Pro and have been pretty much self-taught.  I recently put together a wedding video for a friend and added in some still images.  For the life of me, I cannot figure out why when I export the video, the images come up blurry.  I've tried everything--deinterlace, do a frame hold on each of the pictures (on the in point), etc.  I would really appreciate any advice about this--maybe I'm missing something obvious?  I've attached a screen shot of what a typical image looks like once I've exported the video.  Thanks in advance!
    -E

    Hi -E,
From your last post, it sounds like you have a solution with the different output selection, but if you are still curious, I'm confused by your quoted settings.
<<Export Settings: Video Codec is set to Animation, 29.97 fps, NO optimize stills, 720 x 477 (same as video input size)
Video Footage: Sony Camera, MiniDV tapes, Widescreen SD>>
MiniDV tapes implies that your video is in SD format, 720x480 (which is sort of implied in your Export settings).
Widescreen SD implies that you are aiming to get the output to SD in a 16:9 format, 854x480
Your posted photos look stretched and if you are happy with the video, then I suggest that CS4 is converting the video to Widescreen without distortion and stretching your photos to Widescreen without converting them (i.e. keeping the same number of pixels and just stretching them to the new size).  If you want to try another experiment, either crop or convert your photos before importing them to CS4 so that they are  854x480 and then just produce your video the way that you were doing when your troubles started.
I had HDV video, which comes in at 1440x1080.  To add photos, I cropped my hi res photos to 3840x2160 ( i.e. 2 times 1920x1080), resized the result 50% to 1920x1080 and then imported them.  In Encore I requested SD output (720x480) and the result was undistorted.  So CS4 was happy to rescale the video differently to the stills.  This experience is why I suggest using Widescreen aspect ratio for the photos.   Like you I am self taught and for myself, not good at absorbing the info in the manuals.  Another video software suite I used to use would also exibit Pixel Aspect Ratio problems.  If you took a frame of video and exported it as a still, then reimported it, the result would be blurry.  It turned out that sure enough, it would export the picture as a crisp 720x480 image, and because of the pixel aspect ratio of standard DV being 0.9091, it needed 720x534 for stills being imported. If I took the ouput stretched it to 534 and re-inserted it, you could not distinguish the video from the still.  A royal pain at the time.
Anyway enough rambling.  Worth a try if your new found si=olution gets you  out of a jam but you aren't yet trully happy.
    Cheers, Ian

  • Working with still images SOOO slow in Motion 3!  Any advice?

    Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new to Motion, so please bear with any n00bness I bring. I've hunted the forums for a good half hour now but still not found a sufficient solution.
I am editing a Standard Def project for a client, and for the intro to the piece, they want there to be a bunch of still images flying onto the screen to create a mosaic of about 70 or so pictures. The idea is to start zoomed in on one picture (the pictures are all portraits of people) so that it fills the screen, and then to have the image recede and grow smaller. As the picture grows smaller, another fills the screen and also grows smaller. This continue with all 70 pics until they've all grown small and joined the mosaic.
I've played with some effects and found the "Light Rays" glow effect to be the feel I am looking for, and would like each photo to come onto the screen using this effect at the beginning as it fills the screen.
My problem, though, is that I'm only on my 2nd picture, and it's already SO slow. I tried lowering render resolution to draft and image to half, third, or even quarter. But the problem is that when I lower resolution, it doesn't merely degrade the image quality. It actually crops my 2nd image, and so even though it plays more smoothly, I only see a tiny portion of the image, and I can't properly time the effects or fly ins. It doesn't crop my first image, though, and for some reason, even if I solo this 2nd picture, it's still incredibly slow. I have to remove all effects from it for even the simple resize effect to play smoothly. The file is only 276kb and 842x1080. Does this sound right? Is there anything I can do so that Motion doesn't crop the photo when I lower resolution to improve playback?
Also, Motion tends to freeze after a while to my commands. It'll keep playing back the project (albeit in a very stuttery way) but it'll take 10-20 secs for it to respond to my hitting the stop or pause button. Is there any way I can remedy this?
    Thanks SO much in advance!!!!

    hi,
the first thing you can do is to pre-flight your images. make them as big as you need them in your final compostion, so if the biggest you're seeing them is full screen, make them that size. I use native photoshop files or PNGs, rather than tiffs or jpegs, they just seem to work better for me.
As you work, especially if you are using something like light rays, you;re going to have to render the sequence to watch it in real time. so do a RAM render to watch anything.
Once you have the rays working as you'd like, turn them off to work on the animation aspect. Then turn it on for the render and export.
not sure why the image is being cropped, but try the other stuff first and put the render quality back up to normal

  • Still image jpg w/ motion is chopy during playback

    Greetings,
In FCE4 I have added a few still images which are approximately 500kb in size to a sequence.  Motion has been applied to the stills, basically zooming out slowly in a Ken Burns way.  During playback the motion is smooth when viewed in the Viewer but is chopy when viewed in the Canvas.  What can be done to make the still image motion smooth in the Canvas?
    Thanks, Scott

Make sure the Sequence is rendered fully.

  • How to make a podcast with one still image with iMovie 09

I'm using trying to transfer my podcasts to Vimeo. I've been using iWeb to create a person web site with video and podcasts. I have embedded Vimeo with "html snippet widge." I want to do the same thing with audio, however Vimeo only accept "video" files.
In my attempt to work around Vimeo's video issues, I had the idea to use iMovie 09 to create a "video file" using a single still image with my audio podcast play in the background. The single image would be consistent for the entire length of the audio. It seems simple...one still image file and one audio file.
All of my audio files are less than 45 minutes in length. The problem is that when I insert an image in iMovie I can't get it to last for more than 10:00 minutes of my podcast. I've had to drag the same image over several times, extend each image's length to 10:00 minutes until I have enough images to last the full length of the audio file.
I'm sure there's a simple way to do this with one image, used one time, and have the audio added.
Anyone understand my situation and have a good idea?

The most efficient method would be for you to do this in iMovie 6. You can download a version if you don't already have it on your computer. http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OSX/downloads/061-3532.20070807.nq3ER/iMovieHD6.dmg
Put all your clips into a new iMovie project, in the order you wish them to play. Use the chapters tab and add chapter markers for each clip (except the first one; iDVD will add that one for you). Close iMovie.
Open an new iDVD project. Use the Media tab, then Movies, to locate your new iMovie. Drag and drop it onto the main iDVD window, taking care not to drop it into a drop zone. You should then see the title of your movie and the two options: Play Movie (which will play all the clips sequentiallly) and Scene Selection (which will take you to submenu(s) where you can select which clip to view).

  • How do i make a still image (photo) fit the length of the music? I record music and want to put the tracks to a video file with a still image of my business logo in the background. Any help?

How do I make a still image (photo) fit the length of the music? I record music and want to convert the tracks to a video file with a still image of my business logo in the background. On windows movie maker you could just select "fit to music" but this program isnt as easy to figure out! Any help?

Double-click on the still image in the project timeline to open the Inspector. In the Inspector, adjust the duration by typing in a new duration to match the length of your music. I think the limit for a still image is 10 minutes. If you need more than this, simply drag the image into the timeline again then adjust its duration. The two images will play seamlessly (no gap will be visible).
    See this iMovie Help topic:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3a883915
You can achieve more precision when entering durations by changing a preference in the menu item iMovie Preferences. Check (tick) the preference for Show Time As HH:MM:SS:frames. This will enable you to enter the duration of stills down to the frame level, rather than full seconds (NTSC is 30 frames per second; PAL is 25 fps). When entering times, type a colon between each time segment, such as 2:50:15, which represents 2 minutes 50 seconds and 15 frames. For 5 seconds 20 frames you would enter 5:20 and so forth.
Note that the music will only run to the length of the video in the timeline (in your case, the still images). So, after increasing the stills duration you will need to drag the end of the music track as far as required. The stills can be dragged inwards to reduce the duration if necessary.

  • Low image resolution makes photos blurry ...

What ever happened to the hi-res image sync feature in iTunes?
I remember that there used to be an option to sync full-size images, now I just noticed that all my images recently got "downgraded" to a rather small size, so any zooming in makes them way too blurry.
When was the hi-res import removed from iTunes?
Or did I miss a new feature in 8.0.2 ?

How can I avoid the images getting all blurred out, when I choose to reduce the image sizes?
The system is compressing with lossy JPEG which produces problems if the data you input is already compressed with lossy JPEG. Or in other words, you get double lossy compression.
Having seen a string of similar questions, I showed how to configure a custom Quartz compression but a custom Quartz compression cannot be configured to work with the save as PDF service in Apple Pages.
Therefore, if you wish to customise control of compression, you have to do so before placing the photograph(s) in Apple Pages. The custom compression described below will work in Apple Preview when you save your photograph as PDF, before placing in Apple Pages.
ColorSync and Core Image can do this and that, but Apple applications don't appear to have hooks into what Apple system software can achieve.

I want to import still images to make a stop motion animation, but when I try to change the duration of still images, it isn't reflected in the timeline.  How can I do this?

    Tonaw,
If you import your still images using iPhoto, then the time you set for each still, using FCPX Perferences works.
You can set the durantion from 1 frame to as long as you want them view.
If you do not use iPhoto to import your stills, the default is 10 sec's.
FYI: This issue was brought up within a month after FCPX was released. They found out by using iPhoto, you had better control of the amount of time your still was viewed.
