Adding  folders to libraries

Hi.
Help is required  last posted reply to my Itunes question is not understandable,
I will try again, I have an external hard drive with all my music on it, artists are has named collections, for example; Earth,Wind & Fire Collection
and all the albums relating to that artist are in that collection.
my problem is that when importing or adding folder to library in Itunes Media, I select Earth, Wind & Fire has my chosen artist, I then select the Album that I wish to add to library, all goes well untill I add to library another Album from same artist, then Itunes creates a library and calls it
Earth, Wind and Fire then puts my second Album in that library, why is Itunes changing the name of the artist ? this is repeated untill I have at least three folders each with different named versions of the same artist, and each with Albums from the artist Earth,Wind & Fire and if there is a different reference in the Albums for example EWF yet another folder will be created and that particular Album will put in EWF folder, even-though the album will be in the Earth,Wind & Fire Collection.
In the last reply I recieved a  sort ALBUM by ARTIST was a solution suggested, but try as I may I cannot work out how I can get my version of Itunes to display ALBUM by ARTIST the Itunes GUI looks slightly different to my version of Itunes which is ver 11.02.26 in this version I go to View then Column Browser
and all the sub-menu options are greyed out, which when I then go to Preferences there is nothing I can change that will make the greyed out sub-menu active.
What am I doing wrong?? please help it`s doing my head in.
Arthur

iTunes is primarily organized around albums. For iTunes an album is a collection of tracks with the same Album title and the same Album Artist or Artist (if Album Artist is blank). Different spellings of a band's name, or their album titles can cause repeat albums. For details see Grouping tracks into albums.

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.

  • Adding Folders to Library in Windows Vista

I have recently replaced my notebook with one running Windows Vista, and have a fairly annoying problem with adding music to my iTunes library.
All of my music is stored in a shared folder on the hard drive of a different computer on my home network. The folder (and all of its contents, down to the individual MP3 files) are visible from the notebook. In fact, I can choose the "Add a File..." option in iTunes, and browse to and select individual songs to add to the iTunes library.
The "Add a Folder..." option chokes (and does nothing) when I tell it to expand the "Network" choices.
Similarly, when I go into "Preferences..." and try to set the networked folder as my default iTunes folder, I get the same browsing window, and it refuses to show me any of the four computers on the network when I attempt to expand the "Network" selection.
I have found that I can drag-and-drop folders of songs from the networked drive straight into iTunes, but this is really a clunky fix, and it doesn't help me designate the networked folder as the default folder to save new music files.

Not sure if I made myself clear. I meant the folder where it stops, minus the one before it.
Might be something to report to Apple support. Since it works if you drag it over...something's wrong. The music data is the same but the method iTunes is using to get at the data is different.

  • Adding folders to library fails to complete

    Hello.
After upgrading to iTunes 5.0.1.4 I noticed much of my library entries had disappeared.
I then attempted to re-add my hard drive files by doing a File | Add Folder to Library, like I always have done in the past. iTunes will then add up to 1,722 songs (11.62 Gb), then stop. It just stops like it's finished the process -- no error, nothing.
It adds the files as they are sequentially stored on my drive. I was able to locate the point at which the adding stops. I removed what I thought might be the offending folder from the storage device, then re-attempted. The next time, it stops at the very next folder.
I was, however, successful in loading all the folders by dragging & dropping "My Music" folder into iTunes.
    Anyone, anyone??
    Bueller, Bueller??

  • Keeping two iTunes Media Folders (and libraries) in sync

    Hi all,
Here's my situation... I can't be the only person looking for an answer to this. (Can I?)
At home I have a Mac Mini with my music collection on it managed by iTunes. I have the same at work. I also have Chronosync set up to nightly syncronize my iTunes Media folders. Obviously, this is just step one.
What I'd ultimately like is to be able to change files or add media at either location (through iTunes) and not only have the files moved by Chronosync but also have the iTunes libraries updated. Is there a way to do this via AppleScript or some other solution? I looking to keep two iTunes Media folders mirrored and have iTunes' library be updated at the same time (or on a regular basis).
    Thanks in advance!
    A

It sounds like a question for whoever wrote Chronosync.  I have never heard of it and have no idea what it is or what it does.  Generally you ask questions related to third party software on the software's own support forum.  What you need it to do is synchronize the whole iTunes folder, not just media files.  The library.itl file contains most of the actual playlist and content data but things also get updated in the artwork folder, and some other files (mostly also in the iTunes folder).

Apple's solution is to have you buy all your music from Apple and use the automatically download new purchases set on both computers.  Of course it isn't a complete solution. For example, if you change the rating on one computer it won't change it on the other since all you're doing is downloading a file from a third place (the store) to both other places (computers).

  • Can i delete the files and folders in Libraries Cashe

    Hi,
I was wondering if someone could tell me if it is safe to delete all the files and folders from the
    Libraries >> Cashe
I have moved all of the files and folders into a new folder and my iMac still seems to run fine, but I dont want to restart it until I know that it really is safe to delete all these files and folders

Yes I did mean the Caches sorry I wasn't paying attention to what I was typing and made a pretty major typo. Yes i was trying to dingoes a problem with my videos that I embed in iWeb showing fine in iWeb but now been able to load in Safari. I thought I had this problem fixed but it turned out that I didn't have.
I thought that if i deleted the Caches then the computer would just rebuild them and that might solve the problem, its pretty much a last resort though as I have already looked at the settings and everything and been on the phone to apple tech support and all the settings are correct they are just not showing. The theory was that maybe a half loaded video had some how managed to prevent a the videos from displaying properly and so I thought that rebuilding the caches would solve this problem.

  • ITunes skipping directories when adding folders

iTunes seems to be skipping some directories (with legit mp3's) when I add folders. Anyone experience this?

I have the same problem. itunes crashes within 1-2 minutes of adding a folder. I have been able to add subfolders. It appears that it might be certain files that it is getting hung up on, but mine are either mp3 or wma.
    Any help would be great.

  • When adding folders to iTunes 11, they don't show up in the library.  On one folder add, it created a playlist (not what I wanted).  On the second folder, it shows nothing.  Never seen this before.  Advice?

I added my first folder of MP3s and it created a playlist, but didn't show up in the library.  When adding a second folder, it didn't show up anywhere.  I can do a search for them in the search window, and it finds/plays them, but I want to be able to browse them in my library.  These are not MP3s downloaded from iTunes, but are personal files located on my hard drive.  Can anyone help?

I have a Dell that's running Windows XP. I have found that itunes is very temperamental. this works most of the time... except on my son's computer that's running Windows Vista.
Go to your library in iTunes. Then go up to file and try one of the options (import, add folder to library, or add file to library).
Adding a folder is the least work. You can add all the files from a folder with one click... if it works. Remember that itunes is temperamental.
If that doesn't work, try adding a file. The problem with that is that you have to go through the whole process for each and every file (song, movie, etc).
Sometimes the only thing that works is to import.
I haven't gotten iTunes to work on my son's computer (Windows Vista).
I can't get support from apple in any way at all! They are good about creating electronics that appeal to us But they are lousy at support. If anyone figures out how to access support (where you can actually contact Apple) please let me know ([email protected]). I've been trying for 6 months.

  • Adding folders to itunes from my hard drive

    hi,
i hope this is the right place to post, sorry if it's not...i am new to itunes, i just got an ipod today, and after downloading, installing, and loading itunes, i went to file, add folder to library, and selected the folder on my hard drive where i keep all my music...but after i did this my music folder became totally disorganized, as all of the songs that appeared on compilation albums were pulled out of the folder containing all of the songs on the album and put into individual folders for each song...for example, a 12 cd collection of popular music from 1950's-1990's featuring around 250 artists, the songs used to be organized into a folder for each album and all of those folders were within one larger folder...now i have 250 folders and many of the songs were poorly tagged, so it is all mixed up, and that is only for one compilation, i have several...as well, it created new folders every time a file was mistagged, so that there is now a folder for Tom Petty, a folder for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and a folder for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, whereas before they were all in the Tom Petty folder...needless to say i now find it much more difficult to find a particular file on my hard drive when i am looking for it...now to the question that i am sure you can all see coming a mile away...can i reverse what happened when i loaded that folder into itunes, like if i uninstall itunes will it fix it, because then i could take some precautions before i load in folders that aren't properly tagged, and forget altogether about loading compilation albums if that is what it is going to do to my music folder.
    thanks

I don't think you want to tell iTunes not to keep your music folder organized, because that will leave you with having to organize it yourself. Like you said it will take weeks. What you can do is use the shift key to select an entire album or collection, right click the highlighted songs, get info, choose the options tab, check the box that says part of a compilation, and make sure it says yes. iTunes groups all compilations together in the folder called compilations under the name of the album. Next, make a smart playlist that says artist "contains" Tom Petty. Highlight the entire playlist. Right click on the list of songs. Get info. Type in "Tom Petty" as the album artist for all of them. This will not change the name of the artist in your playlist, but they will all be grouped one folder called Tom Petty. Note: If you have more than one song highlighted you will need to go to options to check the compilation box. However, if you are only changing one song, the check box is under the info tab, down at the bottom, to right of genre.

  • SubFolders and Folders in Librar View

When I look the the Library, all the pictures appears "Flat" even the subfolder' one.
Is it possible to see the subfolder inside the folders like with bridge ?
    PS: Sorry for my english...

In LR 1.1 there is a new option in the Library menu: "Include Folders from Subitems".
If it is checked, you see a "flat view" of a folder and its subfolders. If it is unchecked, each folder's view is independent.
Try the option both ways and see if it solves your problem.

  • Setting up a full contextual search from within folders, document libraries or lists.

    Hi Everybody
I have been loooking through all the availdable answers but so far have not seen anything that is wholly relevant to my problem.
I have set up a search on sharepoint 2013 that seems to be working 100% and does a full contextual search from sites and sub-site. My problem is that the client requires a full contextual search to be working from any folder, document library or list. In
other words, if the user is in that specific folder, only results from that folder should come up when doing a search.
I think that maybe the secret is in writing the proper kql script that will automatically incorporate the folder, document library or list name ? Any assistance with setting up the needed variables or maybe pointing me in another direction.....
If possible, I need to do this without any coding ......

    Hi Theuns,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to confine the search result to the specific document library or a folder.
I recommend to create a new Result Sources and use {searchTerms} path:http://SERVER/SITE/LIBRARY to limit the scope. Then configure the search page to use the new created Result Sources.
Here is a similar thread for you to refer:

  • Possible bug in iTunes 8 adding folders that start with '..'

So I discovered tonight when trying to load tracks into iTunes from a folder that started with '...' (specifically, '...andjustice_forall'). iTunes did nothing. No reaction whatsoever. If I try to load the mp3s in that folder directly, they load fine, but it ignores the whole folder if I try to add it to the library.
I tried to replicate the issue with another folder that also started with '...' ('...andyou_will_know_us_by_the_trail_ofdead'). Has anyone else observed this behaviour? I have a feeling if it's in iTunes 8, it's been around for a while. I'm guessing it's treating the first dot as an indication that the file's a hidden file, and then ignoring the rest of the name.
Can anyone else replicate this? I was loading files from an SMB share served by a Linux host.
    cheers,
    Klaus

I just sent feedback as suggested, hope this helps. What bothers me is that these songs were visible in previous versions of ITunes. I'd actually feel better if there were a setting I just missed that would explain the weird behavior.
Looking through support topics, I specifically did a search using ".38 Special" and found an article concerning the order in which Itunes displays artists, with .38 Special being at the top of the list in the example... so that also tells me that it SHOULD be showing them. sigh

  • Help: adding folders in OracleAS

We have serval Oracle Forms and Reports applications in OracleAS. Right now we put all Forms and Reports in the server like:
    http://"oracleASname"/forms90/
I believe that there should be a way to put subforders in ./oracleASname/forms90/, like:
    ./oracleASname/forms90/application_1;
    ./oracleASname/forms90/application_2;
    ./oracleASname/forms90/application_3;
    etc..
    How do we do that?

I'm not certain, but perhaps this user tip would help:

  • Adding XCode Import Libraries

I'm currently trying to port a Windows application written with "Borland C Builder 6". I'd prefer to import the project file (.bpr) into XCode, but the only import format XCode supports is CodeWarrior. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plugin that increases the formats available for import, preferably include this Borland C format.

No such thing. I seriously doubt any part of a C++ Builder project will be useable on MacOS X.
