Adding FW 800 to a DP G4 mirror door

I have a DP 1.25 G4 (mirror door) and I bought a G-Tech firewire800 pci card for it, planning on hooking up a Gtech G-Raid to it. Now I just read in the documentation, that to actually get fw800 speeds, you have to have a 64-bit card. If you only have 32-bit slots, you only get fw400 speeds. How do I find out if my G4 has 64-bit slots, or if just has 32-bit pci slots? Or does someone know the answer to this?
Thanks in advance.

Based on the information on this page:
http://www.apple-history.com/body.php?page=gallery&model=g4_mirror&performa=off& sort=family&order=ASC
they are 64 bit.

  • Can no longer boot to OS 9.2.2 on a Dual Processor Mirrored Door G4?

Hope someone can put me out of my misery...
I've been running my Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual G4 for years and have always booted into OS 9, but today, the Mac has decided to boot to OSX.
From the Startup Disk Control panel in OSX, I have selected the OS9 system folder as the startup system, but after a restart, OSX still loads. However, on a restart, I notice that I get a quick OS 9 smiley face along with the question mark before it boots into OSX.
The thing is that when OSX is up and running, I can start Classic manually and OS runs OK so I presume the OS 9 Sytem Folder is OK.
Is there something I can do to get the boox booting back to OS9?
    Thanks in advance.

If you still have issues after following Kenichi's excellent advice, let us know if you changed anything, ie. added a new disk, added a new application, moved disks, moved the OS9 System Folder, etc.
a guaranteed-to-work very last resort is to
    let it boot into OSX,
backup the OS9 System Folder to a subdirectory (make sure it's not in the top level of the boot disk).
use the MDD restore cd's to perform a partial restore, in which you select to restore OS9.
You would then need to re-install any other updates to OS9 since 2003, usually iTunes, QuickTime, etc. There's a definitive list of 6 updates that we keep posting in these forums, but I just can't remember them just now.
    - hang on ... Carbonlib v1.6, iTunes v2.0.4, QuickTime v6.0.3, Authoring Support v1.1.9, AppleScript v1.8.3 and MRJ 2.2.6 (Java).
Plus any printer / scanner drivers you may need. But all of these could probably be salvaged from the backup you made of the OS9 System Folder.
If you're like me, I backup the OS9 System Folder every week and keep 4 generations. Mine is about 300MB, 92MB compressed, worthwhile in these days of 120GB-500GB disks.

  • Installing Airport Extreme on Power/PC G4 Tower Mirror Doors  400 Firewire

I called Apple technical and they said Airport Extreme could be installed on my 400 Firewire. If so, can someone forward me the documentation on where and how to install on my G4.
    I appreciate.

AerialZeno, Welcome to the discussion area!
The person you talked to was confused and gave you incorrect information.
The correct DIY instructions are KB 26259, Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors): CIP Instructions.
A 1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 is either the "Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)" or "Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003)".
In KB 42739, Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models, Part 2 the entry for AirPort does NOT include the note for the AirPort Extreme card because those Macs are not compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. Only the Power Mac G4 (FW800) has that note.
KB 106777, AirPort Card: Compatible Macintosh Computers includes "Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)" in the list of compatible computers.
KB 107440, AirPort Extreme Card: Compatible Macintosh computers that Power Mac G4 is NOT included in the list of compatible computers. The only Power Mac G4 on that list is the "Power Mac G4 (FW800)".

  • PowerMac G4 (Mirror Doors) won't startup

My g4 wont startup. I get the Power LED to light up while pressing it, but then it fades off after releasing. I have followed advice as per other posts about the same issue. Those who had success seemed to be a result of PMU and logic board resets, but these have not worked for me. I have gone as far as replacing the front panel board, but the machine is still not starting up. I tested the power supply voltage and it seems to be working, but I can not get this thing to work. I suppose it could be a dead logic board. Does anyone else have any suggestions before I pitch this thing?
    G4 mirror doors

I understadn you have tried advice in 'all the other posts' but that can cover a lot of ground, so to be a bit more specific....
Do you hear the HD spin up?
Have you added any hardware recently?
Although you have tested the voltage on the power supply, have you also checked the individual cables going to both the MB and the HD?
If you have 3rd party cards, USB hubs, etc, remove them, then do the PMU resets, etc)
Since you have been inside the machine, verify all connectors, ram, et al are firmly seated, and the cables are not cut or insulation scraped away.
If you have anything in the front drive bays, make sure the ribbon cable is not pinched or cut. (that happened on mine, grounded out the system, and had the same problem you are now experiencing - new ribbon cable fixed it.)

  • Power Mac Mirror Door DVI or ADC to SINGLE RCA VIDEO OUT to a TV...adapter?

I have a Mirror Door G4 tower that I would like to use as a media center, with an old(er) Magnavox 19" television that only has the single yellow VIDEO IN jack, and the red and white audio L and R. Is there a converter cable that is similar to the one I used to use with my old G4 Powerbook which took the mini DVI and turned it into either composite video out? (I think it was Mini DVI, maybe ADC, whatever that little square video out on the Powerbook G4). I am prepared for low-res results, mostly just want to look at the itunes window and occasionally view utube clips or DVDs.
Also, does the G4 take the original Airport card (not the extreme), and if so does it need a separate antenna the way some G5s do?
And finally should I get good results with a Bluetooth dongle plugged into a USB port on the rear of the G4 when connecting a white Apple wireless keyboard?
Some of these answers will of course sort themselves out with experimentation, but any tips or experience in doing these things would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, m.

I expect the weasel-words in Apple's description are there to be sure that whatever Video card you choose, the card does actually provide the signals needed. These are the VGA-equivalent signals around the Bar at one end of the connector. That gets you Red, Blue, Green+Luminosity, H-Sync and V-Sync. Those signals in combination are all that is needed to build S-Video or Yellow-RCA composite video On-the-Fly (not buffered).
The signals can be sliced and diced to get slightly different versions of Analog Video using adapters built around the SKART interface. There is a cheap one-chip wonder converter used in lots of converters, also loosely called SKART.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKART
This does NOT do conversion to Digital Video, DVI, or HDMI when starting from VGA. That kind of converter has memory and scanning hardware that pushes the cost up higher than the price of an display card.

    Hi-
You may need to repair your OS 9 volume, or, may need to rebless the OS 9 system folder.
Follow the instructions for OS 9 in this document.

About 3 weeks later i went to put some new music on it and i plugged it into the dock (iTunes usually comes up automaticly and it shows that my shuffle is connected to the computer), this time it didnt open iTunes and the ipod icon didnt show up on the desktop, i tried taking it off the dock and unplugging it from the computer then plugging it back in and it still wasnt getting recognized. My ipod still plays music fine but when i connect it to my G4 it just blinks amber once and then thats it, nothing happens. Anyone else have similar problem? I cant figure it out.

  • Internet sharing: iMac and G4 PPC Dual Mirror Door via firewire, fire sharing works fine with this set up now need internet sharing

I have already set up file sharing thanks to a query last year, now I need to set up internet sharing, I am using a firewire connection and my ISP has confirmed that their should be not problem in internet sharing between my iMac and my G4 PPC Dual Mirror door but after trying different combinations in the sharing set up I am still drawing a blank on this connection, any help would be appreciated

You have set up file sharing by firewire, right? Now you want to share your iMac's Internet connection with the G4. Does the G4 have an Airport wireless card? If so, set it up that way in System Prefs under Internet Sharing. If the G4 doesn't have an Airport card then you'll need to do it by Ethernet, as in this article http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_share_your_wireless_internet_connectio n_ethernet. But if you do it by Ethernet then your iMac would need to be connected to your modem wirelessly, not by Ethernet, b/c you need the iMac Ethernet port for the connection to the G4. Hope this makes sense.

  • G4 Mirror Door Wont Power back on

    Hi,
I was using my Mirror Door G4 when all of a sudden it just shut down, as if someone had pulled out the power cable. Everything else was on and working.
When I pushed the power button it would light for a brief second and then nothing. No start up chimes or anything. The LED's on the cards light up briefly as well when I looked inside as I pressed the power button. The fan on the logic board does about a half a turn. I have replaced the power cable, tried 3 different batteries from 3 similar G4's, swapped the power supply from a known working G4, followed the instructions to resetting the PMU switch, all with the same behavior. Is there away to see if there is something wrong with the logic board or is there something else I can try? Thank you your time and help with this matter.

    Hi-
Don't know how to test it, but the power button board could have a problem. I know there is a fuse in older G4's- not sure of the inner workings of this particular beast.
    http://www.welovemacs.com/9225246.html
Having said that, I'm not really sure it would cause a "pulled the plug" like shutdown. That's more like PSU (eliminated), logic board (?), and processor (?).
When you pulled the processor, did you notice any burnt tracings/chips? When the initial shutdown occurred were there any sounds/smells out of the ordinary?
Do you have a known working MDD processor that you can swap/test with?
You could try to unplug the machine, remove the battery, and leave the machine for 24 hours in that state. This has "cured" machines in the past, for whatever reason.......

  • Mirrored doors G4/ great computer, but some questions --- keep or retire?

Would appreciate anyone who could give me some advice here. I still have the Power Mac Mirrored Door G4/1.0 GHz Dual Processor running (purchased in 2002). It's not my only mac, but I still use this one for some tasks. It's running 10.2.9. As is, will leopard make this run even slower than necessary? (512K ram)
Just saw a warning notice that I'm about to have a drive failure. (the one hard drive/ ata). The warning (either from tech tools pro or disk warrior) may be true-- don't know. The computer still runs great.. no signs of failure, except that I probably need to get rid of 10.2.9.
If/when the drive does fail, is it worth replacing the hard drive? If yes, what's the maximum size to replace it with? Can you tell me the exact specs to look for? The original is a seagate...use that brand again?
I only have 512K ram in there. Upgrade at the same time I do the hard drive?
As is, 512K RAM, if I install leopard is it going to be VERY VERY slow?

Hi! Your machine can handle large ata drives probably up to 750gb without any problems. It has 4 ram slots so sticking 4 512mb sticks of ram brings you to 2 gigs and it won't be too slow on Leopard. It won't be as fast a a G5 or MacPro but it will run Leo just fine. 4 sticks of RAM will cost about 65 bucks and a new 500 gig hard drive will cost 80 bucks or so. So for about 150 bucks you can move up in the world. I often buy new hard drives off eBay for less money for projects myself. Tom

  • Beefing Up a Dual 867 Mirrored Door

    Hi Gang
I just picked up a used G4 Dual 867 Mirrored Door. I'd like to have it around as a backup for my G5 Single 1.8 - I'm about to get a new Hard Drive for it. Was wondering about the Seagate 500 Gig below. After I successfully install the new drive, was wondering if I should add some other features?
Think it might make sense to get the OWC Processor upgrade? With this upgrade, even though it might be faster than my old G5 single, it still can't go above 2 Gigs of RAM.

Hey Kenichi - ole wise one
Restraint is a great idea especially when your're broke. I really didn't want that processor upgrade when I saw how much it was. I will however pick up that Seagate 500 Gig HD, and maybe I'll spring for the Radeon 9200. That's a reasonable upgrade for still under $200.
    I also have a G4 733 Quicksilver with this upgraded processor;
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEG42M1200/
It works great, but I think the Dual 867 I just picked up may still beat out the Quicksilver even in it's current configuration?
I never cared for the iMac design, (with it's hardware built into the screen housing)
    Thanx

  • Best FW800 card for G4 Mirror Door?

I've got a Dual 1.25, 1.5G Ram mirror door G4, and I've got a Cinwave card installed on it as well (don't know if that matters or not.) Anybody got any advice on which fw800 is going to be best for me? I'm planning on buying a G-Tech G-Raid for additional storage for this system and capturing in 8-bit Cine YUV codec.

  • Highest OS upgrade for G4 Mirror door-1.25Mhz?

    Hi Mac friends...
Up to what Mac OS can support my old G4 Mirror door-1.25Mhz, 1.25GB ram and 80GB HDD? Is it 10.5.6? Plz help me knowing that.

    Welcome,
Part of how well Leopard performs on your MDD depends on whether the video card supports Core Image. Run System Profiler (in Applications > Utilities) and select "Graphics/Displays" from the left-hand pane and your video card info including which video technologies are supported will appear in the main pane.
Sounds like plenty of people are running Leo without Core Image support, so that's not a show-stopper. It would be nice to have.

Hello Joel Tarbox. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The Power Mac G4 w/ the Mirror Drive Door uses the original AirPort Card. Unfortunately, Apple no longer provides this card. However, you'll find a number of other Vendors that do with a quick Google-search.

  • G4 Mirror Door Video card

We have an older G4 Power Mac that we use for Video editing. Recently upgraded to FC Studio, Motion 3 wil not run on this machine due to Video card not supporting open GL. Our IT depart purchased a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac edition, they were told it would work.

ATI does have a 256 meg VRam 9800 card built specifically for the 2x/4x agp PowerMac G4's like yours and I bought mine through OWC, although I don't see it currently listed for sale. It would be a better choice than the 128 meg vram card, if you can find it.
That being said, I wouldn't bother to even load FC Studio 2 on this powermac of yours. Motion 3 will barely operate and FCP will launch and then laugh in your face. It's not a pleasant experience; I know firsthand as I loaded Studio 2 on my Quicksilver G4 dualie as a test while awaiting delivery of my Mac Pro last summer. You desperately need to update/upgrade your hardware.
