Adding Graphics to iMovie

Is there a way to add circles and arrows to iMovie stills?

if you need further advice, post your Q here …
when you've done it once, it is easy like that!
3 hurdles to go:
• the graphic has to be 16:9
• the graphic has to be saved as .png
• it could occur, that in iM the clip stops to play or doesn't show the graphic, don't worry! on final export all will work well … it's a 'undocumented feature'

  • Achieving Clean-Looking (non-pixelated) Graphics in iMovie

    Here's my situation... Please help if you can!
    I made a short movie to be played as the "auto-play" movie in my iDVD project. This movie is about a minute long, and includes several titles, as well as one logo. Because of the limited titling options in iMovie, I created my titles/logo in Illustrator, imported them into Photoshop, and saved them as high-res jpgs. I then imported the jpgs into iMovie to be used as clips.
    Here's the problem: Everything I try seems to result in jagged graphics in iMovie -- especially, and importantly, my logo. I have tried copying different sizes of the vector art in Illustrator before "placing" in Photoshop. I have tried saving the jpg files in different resolutions from Photoshop. When I look at the resulting jpgs in Photoshop or Preview, etc., they all look clean and "high-res." Why then, don't they look good in iMovie, and what can I do?
    Here's what I've also tried: I have saved the vector art as a .swf file from Illustrator. I can open it in Flash or Flash Viewer and it looks great. Since iMovie doesn't allow .swf files, I think I need a way to export the .swf as a Quicktime movie. Since I don't have QT Pro, I'm sorta stuck. I'm willing to pay for it, but I'm nervous that it won't work well, since I tried using the Quicktime export feature of the trial version of MediaEdit Pro, and it didn't look good.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on 1) how to best achieve clean graphics in iMovie, 2) if my theoretical QT Pro solution would produce a good (great?) result, and 3) if there are any other options besides the complex routine I described above?
    Many thanks in advance for your help...
    -Jason

    If you pressed the Create iDVD Project button in the iDVD tab of iMovie, the jaggies may have been added by iMovie when it rendered the images. There's info about that bug and workarounds here:

  • HD Video Youtube Adding Graphics

    Hi everyone,
    Again I will award you with 10000 karma points for your help on this one!
    I have been filming in ADHD and have recently added graphics - while I love the look of the video the file size is - you guessed it - MASSIVE... and the graphics when played back on HD format are a little scratchy and bumpy. So what I am thinking is to convert the HD video into Youtube format and THEN add the graphics to the video -- however... I would like to know if ANYONE out there knows the size in pixles that my video background (graphic) should be to blend with the newly converted YouTube format?
    Again Karma points people
    Thanks!

    Ummm Hi John,
    I still dont understand what was written on that link that you sent me - I just want to know what the pixle size of a frame is for a video that has been exported from HD into YouTube settings? Forget my ignorance I am completely and utterly new to Premiere Pro and honestly value the patience that you guys have with me on these forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if there is another way to do what I want to do then please contact me or reply here. I basically want the video to be in a smaller format (Ideally for YouTube) and then want to add graphic to the video so that both the graphics and the video play back smoothly.
    - Again thank you all soooooooo much for your time and attention

  • Need help with adding graphics to NSTextView

    I am looking for information on adding graphics to NSTextView so that the graphic is linked to a point in the text and will move with it as the window is resized. I understand that a subclass of NSTextContainer is needed to define the line lengths, etc. for NSLayoutManager. What I cannot figure out is how to know what text is being processed when the message to specify line positions is received by the subclass.
    What I really need is a sample program that shows how to link a graphic to the text.

    I did that bad it's not there and doesn't give me to option to click on it

  • Problem Adding Audio to iMovie (Filevault Problem?)

    Ok... I made an iMovie project when I returned from a trip.  I then turned on Filevault in Lion for full disk encryption (I've been waiting for this feature because I need it for my business).  I went back to make some edits in my video... and iMovie is now behaving differently.  When I add a song from iTunes, it won't play... not even a peep.  I can move and adjust the songs currently in the video but any new tracks get silence.
    I can play the songs in iTunes and even in the lower pane of iMovie... just not in the video itself.  Is this a problem with iMovie or is Filevault causing this?  Anyone know how to overcome this?

    Update... I turned off Filevault.  No change.  Added iTunes tracks still don't play.

  • Trouble adding photos into iMovie project

    In one particular Project, when I try and add still photos, when I drag them into the project window I see the green line and the green 'plus sign', but then the pictures are not actually added...why is it doing this? It works in other Projects, so I'm wondering if it's just a glitch.

    I had this problem last year (August-Sept 2007), and I'm having it again now (August 2008). When I import jpeg photos from iPhoto to iMovie, they turn black and are not accessible in iMovie. In addition, this time when I imported several photos, the replay of the iMovie became jerky. When I threw out the photos, the movie became smoother, the way it was originally. There seems to be some sort of bug that has not been fixed in over a year.

  • Scrambled graphics in iMovie and iPhoto

    When using iMovie and Wondershare Video Editor I get scrambled graphics which has now spread to iPhoto. Will my iMac recover by itself or is this a sign of a damaged graphic card or similar. Graphics on the internet seem to be working OK. I'm using 4GB ram, is this perhaps not enough memory for intensive work with video editing and editing in PhotoShop?

    Be patient. Apple's servers are currently inundated. Try again later or tomorrow.

  • Flash Slide show--adding graphics over multiple slides

    I'm new to Flash--I'm trying to make a slide show
    presentation where the first slide has bits of a graphic and then
    more bits are added in subsequent slides. What is the most
    efficient way to do this? Many of my images are organized with
    layers in Illustrator if that's helpful (all CS3).
    Thanks

    Here is some as to get you started
    Drag a Loader component onto the stage.
    name it pictureHolder then paste this as into the first frame
    of your movie.
    loadVariables("totalImages.txt", "");
    timeOut = getTimer();
    imageNumber = totalImages;
    countDown = function () {
    trace(imageNumber);
    pictureHolder.load("_slide-images/"+imageNumber+".jpg");
    imageNumber--;
    if (imageNumber == 0) {
    clearInterval(timer);
    imageNumber = totalImages;
    timer = setInterval(countDown, 10000);
    timer = setInterval(countDown, 10000);
    now create a text file called totalImages.txt
    keep this text file in the same location as your flash file
    and .swf
    now create a folder called _slide-images
    in this folder place all your images. name them numerically
    ie 1.jpg 2.jpg etc.
    Now open the totalImages.txt and paste this into it.
    &imageNumber=20&totalImages=20
    20 means that you will have 20 images, just change the munber
    accordingly.
    HTH.

  • Problems when adding iTunes to iMovie project

    I recently recorded onto miniDV tape about 15 minutes of rare color film footage from 1938-40, courtesy of the University of Missouri archives. Using iMovie 6.0.1, I made about 15 clips, divided by subject and year and added some titles. I placed them into the clip viewer and previewed the movie. No problems when I previewed it. I also "unchecked" the ambient audio, because the film was silent and the only sound was the sound of the film projector picked up by the Sony TRV-30 digital camcorder. Via the Internet, I found the top songs of the those years and downloaded them from iTunes. I "clicked and dragged" the songs from iTunes into the sound track of the project. Here's where the problem arose. After I added the music, I previewed the movie. The music track played OK, but the video image was extremely "jerky;" in other words, it would appear to stop momentarily, then "jerk" to a start again. It appears that way through the entire project. Any ideas as to why it would be doing this?
    Also, I have another "mystery." The icon for the project is in the "movies" folder. The icon appears as a white "one-dimentional square" with "sideways Vs" a the top and a black star on a white field on the face of the icon. When I click on the icon, the project opens (clips etc.). In previous projects, there is a two-dimentional folder with a blue front and when you open it, there are other sub-folders in it (a "media" folder" and the .mov file etc). Why does my current movie only give me the option of opening the project, and does not show the media folder and .mov file? As always, your assistance is very much appreciated. This forum has been very helpful to me in the past. --Scooper

    Hi scooper,
    ... An answered the second part, I give a try to part one:
    * is the project located on your Mac's local drive or external?
    * is the iTunes library on the Mac's local drive or external?
    * is the "internet" (<<woohoo, bad kharma;-) ) music coded as aac, mp3 or aiff? or, something different, internet "standard", as ogg, wav, whatever?
    your Mac/iM tries to playback in realtime (sure, that makes sense with a movie...), but obviously has too much to do encoding the music...
    in case you own QTpro or a designated audio-app (Garageband, Audacity), try to convert the internet music (<<woohoo, bad kharma... ah, said that) BEFORE import to iM into aiff...
    in case of usage of external harddrives:
    make sure, the drive is "MacOsExtended" formatted, not FAT32... use Disk Utility to accomplish that (any reformatting erases all content!)
    pay the artists//respect local laws//get good kharma

  • Adding soundtrack to iMovie 11

    Using iMovie 11 and adding soundtrack. Worked great in dragging in from iTunes panel for the first few songs, but now I get nothing but background music look. I cannot "pin" the music and I don't see the entire soundtrack, just the smaller background green band. Ideas? Thanks

    Thanks for pointing to that thread wvozzolo. It will be a good idea to set up a new user account and test iMovie when logged into that account. I'm not clear on whether it's best to set up an Administrator account or a Standard account. Perhaps these Apple support articles will help:
    Creating a new user account:

    Mac 101: Mac essentials:

    What is an administrator account?:

    Have you tried deleting the preference file, as I suggested above? If that doesn't work, and the new user account doesn't do the trick, perhaps there is a conflict with a QuickTime plug-in. Look in the folder MacIntosh HD/Library/QuickTime for 3rd party plug-ins such as Flip4Mac and Perian (there may be others). Update these to the latest versions and check iMovie again. Otherwise, drag the plug-ins out of the QuickTime folder to the Desktop to see if that helps.

  • Adding Graphic "Title" Strip

    I would like to add a graphic "title" strip to the bottom of my talking head type interview (to included the subject's name, title, etc) kind of like what they typically [over]do on news programs like cnn, msn, fox, etc... example: http://video.foxnews.com/#/v/4432088/body-scanner-solution/?playlist_id=87937
    Can anyone provide a tutorial or quick step-by-step?
    I'm pretty new to FCE, so any help is appreciated...
    thanks!

    It really depends on how detailed you want to be with your graphics, and remember that the more detailed you are the more patient you have to be. The exceptionally simple way to do what you want to do is to put your talking head shot on V1 and superimpose a Lower Third text from Video Generator-->Text-->Lower Third. Under the Controls tab you'll find a selection for "Background". Try "Solid" and play with the opacity. This will get you going in the right direction.
    There are other methods that will also give you greater flexibility and greater detail involving a matte, cropping, and adding motion with keyframes. If you have custom graphics you will need to explore these options too. But this should get you started.
    Regards,
    Marc

  • Do the edges of a video get cut-off when added to an iMovie project?

    When I view a video clip from the events library it fits in the viewer screen perfectly, i.e., the entire image appears on the screen.  After adding the video clip to my project, when I play the video from the project, the edges appear to have been cut-off, i.e., my giraffe has no head.  Do I need to resize the original video file? How?

    Thanks for the idea.  I found a solution to my problem in another discussion between KimsAZmac and AppleMan1958.  If you use stabilization the image is made larger so it doesn't fit in the viewer.  The solution is to turn off stabilization or use the slider on clip adjustments so the image fits the screen.
    Problem solved.

  • I'm having trouble adding photos to iMovie '11 (same issue when I was on '09).

    I start a new project in iMovie and drag a photo over from my desktop. I see the green line and then drop, the photo does not add.  I tried using the media tables and dragging events, albums, and individual photos, but the same thing happens.  The only thing I can add is video from my events section.  Nothing else sticks.
    I did have some issues a few months ago with permissions where I lost all my music in itunes because I deleted a file by mistake.  I have tried a verify/repair permissions update in disk utility.  The iMovie problem still exists.  Open to any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Problems adding titles on iMovie

    Hi all,
    I am brand new in MAC and getting started with iMovie.
    I have a problem: when I create a new title, it won't be addded to a clip. Actually, it only works if it on black background, but not above a clip itself )with the clip as the background).
    Any help will be welcommed!
    Nedda

    hello Nedda:
    Welcome to the iMovie discussions!
    You need to be sure that the
    b Over Black
    box is unchecked in the titles area
    Then you need to
    b Drag
    the "T" by the
    i type
    of title you want ( Typewrtier, centered, etc)
    i not
    the actual title you typed. Be sure that you try to add it to the beginning of a clip or at a point where you have split the clip.
    Also, you do not need to "Update" the title unless it is already there and you want to edit it.
    Hope that was clear
    Sue
