Adding Groups in iPad Contacts

Am I right that with iPad and iOS 5, you can't add new Groups to Contacts or move contacts to Groups directly, but have to do it in Address Book in Lion and then sync?

This can happen when a field moves 'on its own' from one group to another. Double check the data model to make certain that each field is in the group in which you intend it to be.

  • How can I move an existing contact to a group in iPad Contacts?

I have a years worth of contact information stored before the last update which added the Group option, this is great for new contacts being added but I can see no way to move the existing contact from All Contacts to Customer etc. short of re-typing 400 contacts . .
    Any ideas?

    Hey Jerry,
I've got the same question.  I've figured out a very un-elegant way (because I don't think that Apple has a way to do this with IOS) to "move" existing contacts from either 1) your iPad's Contacts "All Contacts" list to an existing Group, or 2) to add it from a Contacts list on another computer:
    1) If you haven't already made a new Group, you may need to figure out how to do that ( I don't).
If you already have an existing Group (from syschronizing with your iMac for example), but wish to "move" a Contact over into that Group, then you'll have to take that Contact file (it was probably under "All Contacts"), and "Share" it with the same iPad that you're using.  First, you'll have to go to the already existing Group, and hit the "+" sign on the lower left panel.  When the new blank Contact page opens up, merely type in the Last name of the contact which you wish to be in this Group.  Hit the "Done" button.  Next, go into "All Contacts", find the Contact that you wish to move into the desired Group.  When you are looking at the opened Contact File, you will see three active links (buttons) at the bottom: "Send Message", "Share Contact", and "Edit".  Select Share Contact.  You then either Email or Message yourself at the iPad's email address.  Go to Mail or Messages (depending upon which you chose to Share the .vcf file), open the recently received email/message, and touch the icon for the "attached" file.  At the bottom of the Contacts window that just opened up you will see "Create New Contact" and "Add to Existing Contact".  Choose the "Add" option, then navigate to the desired Group, and then the file Contact file (having only what you initially filled in, such as the last name, or whatever you used to initialize the Contact within the Group). Voila!  Although it won't have looked like anything happened, you can close the email message, and go investigate within the desired Group to see that your contact file has indeed been added to the Group.
Whew! That was pretty convoluted.  Once you've done it, you'll get it.  Once you get it you'll probably wonder out loud: "Why hasn't Apple made this simpler...or it it has, why haven't they let us in on the secret?????"
    Cheers.

  • My iPad contacts disappeared after adding a contact

My IPad 2 contacts just disappeared after adding a contact. What will I do aside from syncing? Are there any other solutions?

Upon purchase of my iPad 2 I began saving contacts to my IPad Contacts application that is already set up upon purchase of iPad 2.   I then learnt about synching ( push ) my Gmail contacts to the Ipad 2 contacts 'exchange'.   I did this happily and was very pleased with the results however when synching the first time I chose not to delete my iPad 2 contacts I had began saving upon purchase.   This meant upon opening 'contacts' I had three choices 'iPad contacts', 'Exchange contacts' or 'All contacts'.   There is no way to save ipad contacts directly to the 'Exchange contacts' it has to be saved into a file or vcard and then imported in using e-mail or a PC.
A few days in to using push/exchange I also added calendar and notes to the push/exchange as I was happy with the contacts and e-mail.   I did notice some glitches since doing using push/exchange although I think it began when initially I began pushing contacts/mail there may be a slight chance that it began when I turned on calendar and notes facility to the push/exchange. The glitches that began meant sudden blinking during or after saving in calendar, contacts and notes.   Sometimes this would mean the item added was there but also sometimes it would mean that it was not.   Also double entries began arriving on both m iPad and in my Gmail Contacts online.   These were a mix of contacts that I had and had not not created or edited since acquiring my iPad 2 so the was no pattern or obvious reason.   They were all also a mix of contacts from different groups saved in my Gmail contacts.
Today suddenly whilst adding a contact the contacts blinked shut again.   I re-opened to see what had happened wondering if my contact had been saved or not however not only did what I add not get saved but all approx 500 contacts from both my iPad contacts and my Exchange Contacts vanished from my iPad 2.   I opened and closed the contacts to see if they would return but there was nothing.   I also hibernated and then later shut down and restarted the iPad many times to no avail.   I checked my Gmail Contacts account and thankfully all my contacts were still there.   However, it was still extremely frustrating to have everything vanish from my iPad and then not just come back from there especially as he e-mails and calendar seemed to be still working fine with Exhange/push.   Also, why had the contacts saved to the IPad contacts directly vanished also ?!!   For a £800 gadget not including accessories it really is unacceptable !!!
Finally what worked for me was going to 'Settings', then going to 'mail, contacts, calendars' and then selecting the 'exchange' account and then switching 'contacts' to 'off', then I selected 'delete' iPad contacts i.e delete the contacts saved in the iPad contacts group however with nothing there to lose this time and having a feeling that perhaps that may have contributed to the issues/glitches and this contacts vanishing I clicked on the 'delete'.   I really do have a feeling that perhaps the issues may have been due to having two sets of contacts even though there were only a few there in the iPad before they vanished along with the Exchange contacts.   I clicked 'done' and then I didn't hibernate the iPad 2 instead I shut it completely down.
Upon restarting my iPad 2 I went to see if the contacts had returned but unfortunately once again they had not.   I returned to 'settings', then 'mail, contacts, calendars' and then selected 'exchange' from accounts and switched 'contacts' back on i.e enabled this once again and clicked done.   I then once again switched off ( shut down ) my iPad 2 and waited a while.   Upon restarting I again went back to contacts and found some of my contacts finally arrive but not all.   My 'push/'fetch' for exchange is set to every 15 minutes and every push/fetch showed me more and more contacts until finally I had all but one which has still not showed up !   However, I am once again happy and this time I only have one contacts group I.e for exchange and no separate iPad contacts to confuse me or iPad.   I don't know if this will mean all will be okay now as I do feel like perhaps I cannot now trust iPad contacts and maybe need to print out everything and keep this on me also just in case. I'll keep you posted !

  • The iPad doesn't seem to want to set up an email for a "group" in my contacts. On my iMac, when I type the name of a group, the email addresses of everyone in the group appear in the "To" line of a new message. Not so with the iPad. Help?

Apparently Groups are not supported in the Mail App on the iPad. Read this thread and see Michael Morgan's post for a workaround.

  • Problem adding members to a contact group in a public folder with EWS

I am trying to create contacts and contact groups in a public folder on Exchange 2013 using EWS 2.1 managed API.
In Outlook 2013, I can see the contacts and groups created. However, when I open the group and try to open a contact from the group, I get the following error:
Could not find contact "john doe ([email protected]". It may have been deleted or moved from its original location.
Would you like to remove it from the list?
I tried different methods to add the contact members to the groups, all with the same result.
If I manually add the contact to the group, or if I create the contacts and groups in a private folder, it works fine.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Are the contacts you added to the group in your contacts? If the shared contacts folder is not in your profile and enabled as an address book, you can't add their contacts to a group. (The mailbox needs to be opened as a mailbox for the contacts folder
to be enabled as an address book. )

  • How do i Email to a group saved in Contacts using my iPad?

I have several groups saved in Contacts on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. How do access these groups using the iPad so that I can send emails to the group?

    Thanks for mentioning MailShot.
Actually MailShot can send email with attachments, too. It works by creating a special contact that can send email to the entire group from your favourite apps, just like it was built in. It is also the only app we know of that can FORWARD an email with all it's attachments intact.
You can try it out at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mailshot-pro-group-email-done/id445996226?ls=1&mt =8.

  • Can i MAKE a group, from unrelated contacts ON the iPad.

I know how to form a "new group" in the address book, on my parent MacBook.
However, i am away for a week, and would love to be able to fashion a new contact group, from EXISTING contacts, ON the I pad directly.
I cant seem to find a mechanism on the ipad to do so,
Nor can i on my iphone's contact list.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

Allow me to suggest a workaround that is quite handy, and that I use to send emails to groups using my iPad. I use the iPhone app called Pastebot ($2.99) to create a library of my frequently used groups. In essence, I set up the list of email addresses in each group as a clipping. Then when I need to send that group an email, I open Pastebot and simply select the group clipping, go to the Mail app and paste the selected group clipping into the TO line of the email.
Works great, assuming you don't have too many groups.

  • IPAD CONTACTS GROUP TAB

CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT. I DON'T SEEM TO HAVE THE RED "GROUPS" TAB IN MY IPAD CONTACTS. SOME OF MY FRIENDS HAVE IT BUT I DO NOT. I HAVE ENSURED I HAVE THE LATEST SOFTWARE BUT THAT DIDNT HELP. I HAVE UPDATED ALL MY GROUPS BUT THEY DONT SEEM TO BE CARRYING OVER. ALL MY CONTACTS ARE THERE, JUST NOT THE RED TAB. IS THERE A SETTING I AM MISSING OR O I NEED TO HAVE MOBILE ME OR EXCHANGE TO USE THAT FEATURE...HELP

You have to have the groups set up on your computer in before you sync your Contacts. Your post makes it sound like you have done that already. The next step is to make sure that you are syncing to iTunes correctly.
Connect your iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Make sure that the device is being recognized - look for your iPad name in the left side. Then click on the info tab at the top of iTunes. Look down the list and make sure that you have the appropriate blocks checked for syncing contacts. Make sure you have Sync Address Book Contacts checked.
If you only have one group of contacts to sync, then you will probably not get the groups icon in contacts. For example, I have three groups in my contact list and the red tap shows up in the app. All contacts, - From my Mac - and - Exchange, from my MS exchange email account.
BTW I believe that generally speaking, typing in a discussion site like this in all capital letters indicates anger or shouting. We are a friendly group, no need to shout or be mad at us! (yet)

You could try an app like Speed Names.

  • IMac contacts do not synch with iCloud, iPhone & iPad contacts do

When I add/modify contacts on my MacBook Pro, the changes do not synch to iCloud, or my iPhone or iPad.  Calendar items and iCloud mail do synch and contactys synch between my iPhone and iPad.  What am I missing?  I have Lion.

First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.
