Adding Hard Drive: RAID option

I'm going to add a 500GB drive to my Mac Pro and I'd like it to be joined to the existing as one volume. What is the most common RAID option to use for that?
Thanks!
~TPS

You can start by reading this: RAIDs.
If you use the software RAID supported in OS X then you can create either a striped or mirrored RAID. What are typically referred to as RAID 0 or RAID 1. In addition you can create a RAID 1+0 which is essentially a mirrored RAID or two striped RAIDs.
If you create a RAID with your existing drive then all the data on your existing drive will be erased so be sure to backup your existing drive before creating the RAID. Using a RAID as a startup volume is not a particularly good idea.

  • Slow Boot after added hard drives in RAID 0

    Hi,
My Mac Pro used to boot very fast (from Bong to Login screen).
After installing a RAID0, it takes much longer to boot (x5).
When powering on, after the BONG, the grey screen appears and it seems frozen for a while ~30seconds. While grey screen is still on, I can hear the RAID0 hard drives finally waking up and starting to spin (I believe that they are the RAID0 hard drives because I can hear the startup disk just after the BONG). Once the MacOSX splash screen is displayed, everything goes very fast. Progress bar takes <2s to finally display login screen.
I suspect an incompatibility of the hard drives firmware with the Mac Pro even if those are very popular drives.
The Mac Pro is also sometime very slow to shutdown and when it occurs, I can hear the same sound of the drives waking up and starting to spin again.
I have disabled the hard drive sleep option in the power settings.
Here is my configuration. Disk4 has been added after the RAID0 and hasn't changed the issue. Please help.
    Disk1: (Startup Disk)
    Capacity: 149.05 GB

    Disk3: RAID0 - slice2

I am still booting off of the same drive as before I added the RAID so RAID disk doesn't appear in disk control panel but I went there and reselected my initial MacOSX installation folder on Drive0. It seems to have improved things quite a bit. Was it just looking for other boot partitions on all hard drives on startup? I don't know why this setting would have changed when adding drives into the box.
    Thanks.

  • Humming sound like a ground loop with added hard drives

I get a humming low freq Hum from my MacPro from adding or added hard drives. I am using Seagates 320's ( 3 - non raid ). The MP is under my desk and I think some may not hear what I do if sitting on a desktop.
I can't figure out if it's a ground loop issue, more than one drive spinning at the same speed or some mechanical isssue, like metal to metal contact.
Just one drive with the OS. The Hum if still there is not something I am aware of or bothers me. But your room must be quiet to hear ir best.

As I mentioned before, some people will not hear the "hum" if the MP is sitting on your desk ( or one hard drive ) . Mine is under a large desk that is 6' long, which kinda amplifies the sound and creates a sound box for the low freq hum. Some what like adding a subwoofer. But when you add one or more drives it will Hum and I think I know the cause.
One is there is no isolation ( ie rubber ) between the hard drive mounting system, the (metal) inside frame and outer (metal) case. This causes the MP to become or act like a tuning fork.
For those who do hear the hum sound, you can take both hands on either side of the MP and "squeeze" the sides and hear the sound get lower. Take your hands off and hear it louder. So the whole MP is vibrating or creating "noise" or low freq Hum ( tuning fork) .
The problem is some what resolved with using 2 drives if you mount one in bay 1 and the second in bay 4. ( not side by side ) In other words, the sound is amplified to a higher degree if you have matching drives ( non raid ) next to eachother.
This issue will drive you nuts if you have it or can hear it. The MP stock 2.66 thats a month old is what I have. Maybe some other Macs don't show this same sound.
Whats interesting is the metal case, both outer and inter being connected as a "rigid unit" is causing or lets say, making matters worse. The other of which I have not plotted the freq, I think is around 60hz which just so happens to be the same as your " AC power". So the humming could sound like a ground loop, when in fact the sound originates from the hard drive and is being magnfied by the rigid non insulated MP that might be inhancing it's own "resonate frequency"and acting like a tuning fork.
Now if I am right and the MP is reacting as a tuning fork. What is the solution? I don't really know. And I have not tried any so called fixes other than switching bays. I have some ideas. But only those that would not cause a warrenty issue.
I hope Apple will take a look at the issue and see if a real engineer can first identify the issue and come up with a solution.

  • Best external hard drive/RAID drive for weddings and events

    Hello,
With all the drive possibilities out there, what would be the best, most reliable, and cost effective external hard drive/RAID drive to purchase for weddings/events and other videos on a single computer system?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

    Brian
Did read your other posts and agree with them.
As we all know, it will depend on the amount of footage and resolution as to how much needs to be transported around. Given that its DV or HDV and I'm guessing only a few hours of fottage then there are a few 2 drive esata boxes about which are as portable as some lacie/gtech drives.
    www.caldigit.com/S2VRDuo.asp
or one of the new GTech drives that have a sata port as well as fw could be good.
Re the 2 bus issue, I would be delighted to be wrong about it. It is through the Avid tech support that I got this info. Todate, I have not been able to get my avid mojo to work on a Lacie PCMCIA FW card at the same time as I have FW drives attached. This seems to sugest that they are not 2 busses, to an avid at least.
Thats why, for portable editing, I am moving towards a macbook pro with esata card for storage and fw free for other uses.

  • Adding hard drive?

    Hello
I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to add a second hard drive to my Quicksilver G4/867 (2001). It currently has the original single IBM 60GB ATA66 7200rpm hard drive installed.
I'm thinking that since the computer never sleeps (I run my own little 5-account personal mailserver for the family, and I think the network intrusion detection software is adding entries to its log files frequently enough that the hard drive could never sleep even if it wanted to), that having a second internal hard drive to backup the entire original drive, perhaps as a mirrored RAID, would be a good idea.
That said, any recommendations on what to get, how to install it, how to configure for mirrored RAID without destroying everything on original drive, possible vendors (as a mirrored RAID, wouldn't I also want, essentially, an identical drive (IBM G0GB, ATA66, 7200rpm), which I am having big-time trouble locating)?
Or perhaps just having it as a second standalone hard drive as a periodically updated copy of the OEM drive, that I make backups to once a week or whatever, would be a better way to go? Then, how would I make it bootable, should the OEM drive fail?
Thanks in advance for any help/guidance/recommendations!
    j.v.

Yup! It arrived last week -- a 60GB ST360021A -- picked it up on eBay for $65 (includes shipping) -- allegedly brand new. Installed it last weekend. The only thing about the install, I couldn't get one of the bracket mounting screws in because all screws were side install, and the one in the rear outside corner I couldn't get a screwdriver to. So it's only got three screws holding it in place. Disk formatted right up with Disk Utility. Did a "write zeros to disk first" option to ensure any bad blocks would be mapped out. The Quicksilver model of Mac has the spare power and data cable connectors on the same cables that go to the primary drive, and all you have to do is just remove the jumper on the drive to make the new second drive a "slave" drive. After having read a number of posts here, I decided against a mirrored RAID install, and instead downloaded a crippleware backup utility called SuperDuper. Made a bootable clone that I verified boots up, can read/write files to, etc. I've mailed the shareware fee because it appears there are a lot of convenient options (scheduling unattended backups, "smart" back up that only modifies (on the target disk) what's changed on the source disk since the last backup, etc.). There are probably cheaper-priced but equivalent backup utilities out there, but this one had a pretty decent report card, both overall and as of recent, on versiontracker and macupdate so that's what I got. Also, I keep an administrative account on the computer separate from all the regular user accounts, so in Terminal, I changed the file permissions on /Volumes/Seagate so there were no "world" privileges -- that keeps it from showing up on the desktop of, or in Finder windows of, regular user group accounts. But both primary and backup drive show up on, and are accessible via, the desktop and Finder window of the admin account.

  • USB 3.0 External Hard Drives & RAID

    Hi,
I've recently ordered the new rMBP with USB 3.0 so I want to buy a new external HD to take advantage of it (I do a lot of video editing).
I was wondering if it is possible to buy two USB 3.0 2TB Hard Drives and RAID them together? Or do you have to buy a special RAID Drive to use RAID?
    Thanks,
    Gulliver
p.s. I wanted to do RAID1 (mirrored RAID).

    Thanks for the advice.
This seems like a cheapish option: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006TADRD2
Although, it dosen't say it supports USB 3.0 and I can't find a RAID setup that does?
    Thanks

  • External Hard Drive - Best Option

Anyone have any suggestions on the best solution for a 1TB external hard drive? I've been looking at either getting a Lacie Big Disk Extreme+ or buying an Icydock enclusure with a Seagate Barracuda Internal Drive. Both priced out about the same. Any thoughts on which would be better or another suggestion?

Reliability costs extra, because it requires redundancy. There's basically two options in the consumer price range: RAID (a technique requiring expertise and maintenance) or Drobo (a product designed to do what RAID 5 does without so much hassle).
Here's what Apple says about RAID, but it's much more trouble than it sounds:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1013.html
Here's what Apple says about Drobo, with a few reviews:

    Here's Drobo's Time Machine page:
    http://www.drobo.com/productstimemachine.aspx
The cheapest way to get a Drobo is with a $50 discount from podcasts like Tekzilla ( http://revision3.com/tekzilla/ ) or GeekBrief ( http://geekbrief.tv/ ). Otherwise, retail price only fluctuates by a few bucks:

  • NB200 -00L stopped during the middle of formatting, can no longer use the hard drive recovery option

    Hello,
    NB200 -00L is the model
Power was down during the beginning of hard drive reformat,I had tried to press 0 (zero) during restart
I had also tried to press F8 during it restart, then choose repair option, but it kept rebooting itself in a loop with no error message.
I really would like to restore to the manufacturing settings.
I had my usb drive, but the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
Unfortunately, my model does not come with a dvd reader neither.
    What are my options?

    Netbook NB200-00L (PLL28C-00L011)
Everything for that Canadian model is here.
the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
I don't understand what's happening. If you cannot boot from a flash drive with recovery media, it may  be that the drive does not have the proper contents. You can remedy that by ordering a new flash drive from Toshiba.
See the section Restoring the pre-installed software from your created Recovery Media, which is on  p. 3-14 of your User's Manual.
If you cannot boot from a known bootable flash drive, I would seek service.

  • How to undo a hard drive RAID

I recently replaced my Macbook Pro's hard drive with a solid state drive. Things have been fine until recently I tried turning on find my mac in the iCloud settings and was told I could not because I have sett the solid state drive as a RAID. Is there a way that I can undo this without loosing any data? I am trying to find out how to take off the RAID. Thanks

The USB port your Mac is high powered. The port on the AirPort Extreme is not.
So, it tends to be borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power to a hard drive...even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Often, users...including me....need to use a powered USB hub when they attach any drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
You might want to give that a try. Double check to make sure that the drive is formatted in FAT32 as well, since Windows NTFS or exFAT will not work with the AirPort Extreme.
Powering down and restarting the entire network.....modem first, then router, etc.....is something that you would always want to do after any change or addition to a network.

  • Hard Drive Replacement Option(s)..?

Will the following hard drive properly replace my WD5000BEVT-60A0RT0 500GB inside of my HP Pavilion g7-1070us :
Western Digital Scorpio Black wd5000bpkt 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136856).
My drive is working fine at this point in time which I am almost certain it's a 5400rpm drive.  I started to think about what I'd do if my hard drive fails.  It's good to be aware of my options in advance of any problem especially since the g7 is my one and only one computer.
My computer is exactly one year old as of the beginning of May 2012; therefore, the existing hard drive should be fine for a long while.  The faster rpm seems a choice replacement for any slight addition to its speed, although I fully realize that current consumption and other operating parameters are factors that have to be more professionally considered by someone more qualified than me about hard drive technology.  The link above includes specs and other information including an interesting comparison's pdf link towards the bottom of the webpage.
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards from Mark KF8RV.

    Hi, Mark:
    You are correct.
You only need to purchase the bare drive, and strip (reuse) all of the existing hardware (screws, caddy, interface connector to the motherboard (if applicable)) from the current HDD.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook which may come in handy when you want to replace your HDD.
Removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 4.

  • Toshiba Portable Hard Drive - no option screen

Bought a 1 TB automatic backup portable hard drive and connected to my computer running Windows 7.  I clicked on the exe file and lights blinked on computer and drive.  I thought all was well.  This morning, I attached the drive again and looked at the files backed up the day before.  Nothing except a 1KB login.ini file.  Nothing backed up.  I opened the users manual and saw that the screen giving the option to backup or restore never came up.  In fact nothing came up - just blinking lights.  What do I do?

I have same problem. I've never seen this screen either. I just plugged it in and it indicated it was doing daily automatic backup. I just discovered that I can't find any documents backup since the day I first plugged it in. Will check the warranty on the thing and try to get Toshiba to take it back.

  • Installing Programs to an external/non-system hard drive (Raid 0)

    Hello,
Here's the setup... a little different but should be simillar to MacPro setups. I have a Macbook with a 120gb stock drive and a 160gb 'optibay' hard drive installed where the superdrive was. It is all setup and running. I would like to Raid 0 the pair. That would give me a 37GB boot volume and a 220GB raid 0 internal volume.
I cannot get LogicPro 7 or FCS to install on the second volume. The error is:
"This software must be installed on the running system"
Is there a way around this? Is it possible to install OS X on a raid 0 volume such that I would have a 220gb boot volume and a 37GB 'extra' portion?
    Thank you

What idea beyond just installing it where it goes? The installer is set to not allow it. You might try installing it, moving it, and putting an alias where the original is supposed to be.

  • External Hard Drive Partitioning Options

I recently purchased a new external portable hard drive for my mac.  It is the WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB version.  I looked up online how to reformat it for Mac's and read through the instructions.  Essentially, when reaching the part about partioning the disk within the Disk Utility app I want to select the Mac OS Extended option.  However, it is not there. Along with a few other options that I don't want to use, it shows Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Journaled; case sensitive).  I understand that journaled offers more protection, but it is noted by a lot of the community that for photos and videos (and other media) the regular Mac OS Extended is much better (and that is what my use will be for).  Do you know where this option has gone and what I can do to get it back?
Thanks, please let me know, any help is appreciated!

    1. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) unless you have a reason to choose a different format.
    2. Yes.

  • System lockups/video corruption after adding hard drive

I have a first generation MacPro with an ATI video board. I recently added a 1 TB Western Digital "Black" hard drive, and I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate the first drive onto the Black HD, which is now my new boot drive.
Ever since I did that, my system has become quite unstable and locks up frequently. What typically happens is I'll get a garbled single row of pixels in random places on the screen, and then within a few minutes it will lock up if I try to do anything that is graphics intensive such as using Expose's active screen corders to show my desktop, or opening a folder with dozens of different icons (like the Apps folder). It /seems/ like the problem is compounded when I am using FireFox, but that may simply be because I use it alot.
After the lockup the only way to regain control of the machine is to hold in the power button.
I've even gone as far as removing the original drive thinking that perhaps the system might be confused and is pulling drivers or whatever from the old drive. That didn't help.
Any thoughts as to what is happening here? It's seriously driving me nuts (not to mention wasting a lot of my time constantly having to restart the system).

Did you run Disk Warrior before and after cloning?
    Repaired permissions?
    Re-ran 10.5.7 combo update?
I'd even look in system profile - memory and see if there are errors showing (doesn't show errors from prior system boots though).
Cleaned out the X1900; add copper cooling kit $29, or look into another ATI card.
Before using any new drive, zero it. And if you have Windows and the drive is backed up or before you put files on it --- do a complete and thorough zero and extended test in Windows using WD's own Diagnostic utility - much better, reliable, and does map out bad blocks while Disk Utility and other OS X tools rarely do. But any new drive... I've had 3 out of 6 need such treatment.
As a test, reboot back on your original why not? I'd have done that just to narrow down the possibilities.

  • Looking for a Hard Drive RAID System for 17" MacBook Pro, any Suggestions?

I purchased my 17" MacBook Pro in Nov. 09 and it does have an ExpressCard/34 slot. What I am looking to do, is purchase a 4TB Caldigit VR External Hard Drive and put it on RAID 0. I Love the performance fact, but I don't feel too safe, because if that drives go down, there goes my data. So what I want to do is use Carbon Copy Cloner and find another External Hard Drive that will backup my Caldigit VR, since it will be RAID 0. Any Suggestions would help out very much! I am using this RAID System to store my HD Video using Final Cut Pro Studio. I know I can set up the Caldigit VR as a RAID 1, but I would rather set it up as a RAID 0 and have another hard drive back the data up. Let me know if you have set up a RAID System for your MacBook Pro and what you did. Also what express cards do you recommend?
    Thank you,
    Chad

There is a difference technically between this iStorage unit and the Cal Digit stuff. Cal Digit includes a hardware raid controller, and removable drives. The iStorage Pro unit relies on your computer's CPU to control the raid... so will tax things like render times... plus just to play a software raid can take as much as 30% of your CPU's cycles to do it...
That said, it may not matter if you're working in lower resolution files, or lower data rate stuff, either company makes great gear though. Both are intended for use with video systems. But ya do get something for the extra money on the CalDigit gear.
But if all you want to use it for is backup of data... anybody's drives would do this... doesn't have to be a raid either. Single FW drives will certainly hold the data as backup even if they won't play it without dropping frames.
