Adding harddrives to g4 quicksilver 867

Hi All,
I have added a 120 hard drive to the 60 drive in my G4. Is there a way to add more then 1 to it. Adding the additional was easy, the connection was there but not sure if the g4 can handle more than 1 and if so how do I do it. Thanks for you time.
Joe

Jyearego, welcome, your computer has support for up to two internal ATA drives, which your have already installed, and an addition bay to the left for a third. However, you will need to add a PCI controller card to power it, they come in ATA and SATA depending on you hard drive.

  • Connect 17" Studio CRT to Quicksilver 867 mhz G4

I have a 17" CRT Studio Display connected to my B&W G3. I just got a Quicksilver 867 mhz G4 and I am wondering what kind of adapter(s) I will need to connect the Studio Display to the G4. Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for the information. That's plug looks exactly like what I need. However, I am still wondering about the other half of the solution that involves the monitor's power source. Currently, I am using this monitor on an old B&W G3. The power cord that comes from the monitor plugs directly into the back of the G3 tower to get its power. That connection is a female plug rather than the standard male wall-socket plug. I am guessing that I could just replace that monitor cord with a standard computer power cord, plug it in, and have the monitor get its power directly from the wall socket rather than through the computer.
    Does that make sense?

  • QuickSilver 867 G4 with default ADC and Dell 1704FPT LCD DVI

I finally have a digital LCD to use with my Quicksilver 867 Mhz G4, thanks to a package deal with Dell.
But I wonder if my Mac's build-in ADC support can drive the DVI input of the Dell 1704FPT LCD, with Apple's ADC to DVI adapter, or if I need to get a DVI video card for this purpose. I plan to run at a 1280 by 1024 resoultion.
For that matter, I have a DVI switchbox and Sony 19" DVI digital LCD in use with my PC's and Mac mini. Would the build-in ADC support that as well with the adapter?
    Thanks for our input.

Update: Here are the specifics on my card and monitor. I note no core image support.
I'd really appreciate feedback on whether I can use this card for DVI output to my LDC monitor.
    Thanks.

  • What is the correct installation sequence for my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB into my Quicksilver 867 G4?

    Hi.
I just got my used ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB card.
What is the correct installation sequence into my Quicksilver 867 G4 running 10.4.11 on one drive 10.5 on another?
The original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - 32MB SDRAM went bust.
Is the driver build in 10.4?
Do I remove the old driver?
If I need to install the driver that came with it, (10.3.6) should the card be installed first?
    What about firmware updates?
Thank you for all your time and patience.

  • +Added Airport Card to G4 867 Quicksilver - Not seein' any wireless signals

    Hi hello there,
I got this G4 running 10.5 for surfin and music - but I can't seem to get the Airport workin on it.
I have a laptop that is currently using the Airport Express... So I know how to set it up. And I know it's sending out the signals
I installed an Airport card - It's in my "About this mac" so I know it's recognized.
I rebooted (held if for long until it beeped {thanks IT guy}) I zapped the p-ram - It's ON. I got a lil Amber icon next to it in the Network controls. And It's in my Shortcut Airport menu - but I don't see nobody - no networks.
    What am I doing wrong?

Download & try MacStumbler @ http://www.macstumbler.com/ to see if it can detect any signal.

  • G4 quicksilver 867 hard drive question

I am about to replace the internal hard drive, just want to make sure that this will work: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100
I realize that I will only get 128gb max, was also wondering if 7200.7 would be an issue? Will update system to Tiger with this.
    Thanks.

Hi, Ricordo, and welcome to the Discussions!
First, check the Hardware Overview section of your System Profiler to see what your Mac's Boot ROM version is. If it's indeed a QS Mac and has Boot ROM version 4.3.3f2, it should have built in large drive support. If it's anything else, it does not. If it does, please post back and advise...
If your Mac does not have built-in large drive support, you can add an ATA-133 PCI card to run the drives at their full capacity. Alternately, you can use the Intech ATA Hi- Cap support Driver (which has some limitations on how you must set up the drives). The Driver is $25. I'd recommend the card option as the better way to tackle this. It's more flexible; will provide you with additional, faster, independent drive busses; and will allow you to add more drives, should you desire to do this. Sonnet, Acard, and SIIG make Mac-compatible cards. They run from $70-$80.
If you had formatted your 200GB (slave) drive in another Mac with large drive support or perhaps in a FW enclosure, and then added it to your Mac, it could explain why it formatted to 189GB or so. However, this should not be done. I just hope that you haven't lost any data that may be stored at a location that you may not be able to access now. If you have lost data, I'd try putting the drive back into something that has large drive support and seeing if the whole drive is again accessible, or adding the drive to an ATA-133 PCI card. If it still doesn't show all the files, then I'd download the demo version of Data Rescue II and see if the files can be seen. If they can, then they can be recovered by purchasing the full version of the software. If there are important files there, whatever you do, don't reformat the drive. (This may be another reason to choose a card over the Software driver option I previously mentioned.)

Your computer uses the Foxconn H-Alpinia-RS780L-uATX (Alpinia) motherboard (Alpinia GL8)
This motherboard has 4 SATA ports for hard disk drives (HDD), Digital Video Disk (DVD), or Solid State Drive (DVD).
Your computer's power supply should have a spare power connector for that SATA drive.
    You have a 3-step process.
    1. Determining the new storage device that you desire (HDD or (SSD) and its capacity.
    2. Where you would mount this drive (empty drive bay?) and will mounting adapters (2.5" to 3.5" or 3.5" to 5.25") be required for that case mounting.
    3. Migration of your data to the new drive OR if desired to be your new boot drive -- recovery or re-stallation if the Windows OS.

  • Adding Internal Drives in QuickSilver

System has default drive in Bay 1 bottom (Seagate 60GB ATA).
This is connected to primary Bus - ATA/66.
Goal: to add two new 250GB ATA drives (Maxtor), and Mirror them.
Ideally, I'd want to move the System disk (the 60GB Seagate) to the slower ATA/33 bus, location - where I removed the ZIP drive from.
    Okay, fine, that works.
Then, I put the two new drives on the faster ATA/66 bus. Startup, I get the grey screen with the symbol on it - circle with a slash through it (like NO SMOKING).
    What is my problem?
    Thanks!
    933 MHz PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Server

    Hi, Paul!
    Things to check...
The optical drive should be jumpered as Master (it should already be so configured) with the Seagate jumpered as slave. (A Seagate configured as slave has no jumper pin present.)
One Maxtor should have the jumper removed completely (slave). The other should have the pin inserted vertically across the leftmost two pins in the jumper block, as you face the pin end of the drive with the label/top of the drive facing upward (Master).
Once configured properly, either do a PMU reset while the Mac is open, or do a PRAM reset before booting the first time. Once booted, launch Disk Utility and initialize/format the new drives.
You must have Boot ROM version 4.3.3f2 on your QS2002 (see the System Profiler) to natively run the 250GB drives at full size/capacity on the built-in drive bus. If you have any other version, the drives will be limited to 128GB after formatting.
    Gary
ps: You do realize that the optical drive bus runs with a max throughput of only 16.7MB/sec, right? Moreover, you might run into burning issues if you're planning to use the Seagate as the startup volume on that bus.

  • Promise controller setting for added harddrive

    Hi,
I have 2 SATA hard drives (non-raid) on the 1st channel of my board (Intel controller). My XP boot drive is on drive 0 and other stuff on drive 1. I have an addition SATA drive (non raid) I installed on the 2nd channel (Promise controller). To get it to start I set it as RAID on drive 3. My question is, should I set the onboard Promise back to SATA or leave it as RAID. It works now as is. I was going by the FAQ on this site, but I did not see it say anything about setting it back. Thanks.

    A follow up...
When I set the Promise Controller back to AS SATA, Windows "lost" the drive. It placed its yellow sign next to Promise Controller in device manager and the Disk Manager would not show the drive. I tried uninstalling the Controller in device manager and rebooted. Same.. yellow flag.  I tried updating the driver to the latest (downloaded from MSI). It said something about the driver was reverting to the old one (which didn't work). Hmmm, so I updated the driver to the one from the Install CD that came with the board.. Success. All is working again. Odd, but now working. I may try to redownload the drivers and update but it is working, so I will leave it for now. Ihope this may help others.

  • Adding drives, proc upgrade: Power Supply? Heat?

    Hello All,
Thinking of installing a total of 4 Internal Hard Drives, and a dual 1.6ish processor. Wondering if there are any Power Supply and/or heat issues I need to consider.
    Current set-up:
    PM G4 QS 867
    1.5GB RAM
Power Supply is original: AcBel APlPC12..."Total 344W MAX."
Video Card is original AGP GeForce2 MX 32MB VRAM
    Apple 17" Studio Display
    Thinking of adding:
    2 Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 200GB drives in the U-Carrier
2 Hitachi Deskstar SATA 500GB drives, 1 in each of the remaining bottom bays
All controlled via a Projovian "2-Port SATA and ATA133 Dual Connection PCI Host Adapter Card"
and further down the line a dual processor in the 1.6 to 2.0 GHz range.
Intended use is primarily FCP and some Photoshop.
    Any thoughts or warnings?
    Thanks so much,

That should be fine, in regards to power. As for heat, well it could get a little warm in there once you upgrade the CPU. You might want to get a PCI slot exhaust fan once you put the new CPU in there.

  • G4 quicksilver and tiger video choppy

I inherited a G4 quicksilver 867 mhz. I added ram to bing it up to 512mb. Also went from OS X 10.2.8 to Tiger (10.4.10). Heres my problem. Before I upgraded it I could pull video from a dv camera and edit it with imovie. Video was very smooth. Now after the upgrade to Tiger video in any program is very choppy.

No, not normal, but which G4 is it? How much RAM does it have?
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • QS 867 Mhz processor in a QS 2002 motherboard??

    Hi there.
I'm trying to get a Quicksilver 867 Mhz processor (with L3 cache) to run in a Quicksilver 2002 motherboard, but it ain't working. I've been pretty consistent in my troubleshooting, but before I toss it out (or try soldering the L3 cache onto a QS 733 mhz cpu... muhaaahhuuhhahhh), I'd thought I'd throw this out for some feedback in these lovely discussion pages.
I did earlier get this cpu to run on a Digital Audio motherboard and it booted up no problem - even the L3 cache was recognized. But it was unstable (unstable, but very fast...). I had originally thought that the motherboard was faulty (I got the exact same errors with the original 466 mhz cpu and a QS 733 mhz cpu - both a digital audio and a quicksilver psu have checked out ok in a different machine). I went through much trouble, troubleshooting, and eventually got a new/used Quicksilver motherboard, only to find out that the actual trouble-maker was a piece of RAM. Which was very insidious, because the mac(s) booted okay (the system profiler even said it passed), it only caused problems when I'd open certain applications, such as Firefox or System Preferences (which would eventually crash), or tried to do a new OS install or did a software update (none of which would complete, either in panther or tiger). I'm thinking it might have been a high density piece of ram that got pass me. I think Techtool said there was a problem with a piece of RAM earlier, but I thought it was refering to the new piece of 512mb (which had come from another quicksilver) and I tested that piece in other machines and it was fine, so I discounted it as the source of the errors. It turned out to be a piece I already had (256 mb hynix) and which I thought I'd used before with no problems, but I guess not (I had a couple of extra sticks).
Anyway, back to the current problem, now even with the new (tested) quicksilver board (it's a 2002 - but that shouldn't matter), the QS 867 mhz processor won't work and I don't know why! It did run in the digital audio board, only exhibiting the same errors as the other cpu's due to the bad piece of ram. It hasn't been treated any differently than the other 3 processors I used testing, in fact, probably even more carefully, and they are all ok.
It sometimes will boot to the apple OS X icon but stays there. I also get either a single beep, two beeps, three beeps, four beeps or no beeps at all (ie no power light, just the red light of the board, fans running, etc). I don't know if it got damaged earlier when testing (I did try it on another digital audio motherboard that I think was damaged in shipping), but I'm very careful (and have done a lot of computer updgrading, peecee and mac). The only thing I can think of is that when I first plugged this cpu into the latest QS motherboard, I tried to boot up without putting the heatsink on it first (not sure if this is important or not, it got hot but so did the 733mhz cpu which I'm using now - and nothing smells burned). I heard two little pop sounds, then the computer shut down (as it did before... many times with the other motherboard). I did also find out later that one of the cpu mounting posts wasn't tight to the board (it had snapped from the screw when I tightened it - didn't know my own strength), but usually no contact to the board would just cause no response, not a short to the cpu - and once again, the 733mhz cpu which is fine, went thru the same thing. I did get it to boot after this to the apple os x icon (I let it sit for a day). The motherboard is fine - I'm running from it now with the QS 733 mhz processor (and from whence I troubleshooted the bad piece of ram). And I've methodically zapped pram, reset the pmu, removed/changed batteries, took this part out, put that part in, threatened, cajoled, even sang to it... til I'm literally blue in the face - to no avail!
Any suggestions? Or it this processor fried? Or is there something I'm missing (maybe in regards to the QS 2002 motherboard)? I've searched and nothing comes up that I have to do differently, and when I put the old 733 mhz cpu back in it (not changing anything else), everything runs fine (a lot slower, but fine, as I wipe a regretful tear away).
    Thanks for any input.

This configuration has been running stably using the QS 733 Mhz processor (and ran stably before with an earlier qs motherboard in a different machine). So unless there is something different with the 2002 motherboard, and all research indicated it completely backward compatible, nothing I have installed is causing the problem. I have stripped the machine(s) down to the original configurations at some point, and...

Can anyone tell if it would?

Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 867   Other OS   17" Studio Display, 1.5GB RAM

    Hi, Patterson -
I'd just plug it in, but am fearful of destroying something in the QS.
It will not hurt the QS to attempt to boot it from the external firewire drive.
Unfortunately it probably will not boot - I believe that like OS 9 installs, even when using a retail disk set OSX installs become model-specific upon installation; that the installer selects files appropriate to the hardware on the machine receiving the install.
With OS 9, when using a retail Install CD (and some OEM model-specific CDs) it is possible to create a universal (boot any Mac) installation of the OS - very handy when building an emergency boot firewire drive for multiple models. I do not know if it is possible to do that with OSX.

  • Quicksilver G4 + Widescreen LCD DVI problem - VERY VERY WEIRD!

    Hi,
I bought a G4/867 Quicksilver off eBay. It came with Panther. I already have a 20.1" BenQ widescreen LCD.
I installed Tiger, then noticed the DVI display would fail (display strange blue/black artefacts or a 'fuzzy screen'. I have screenshots if anybody wants them. It is intermittent, and usually occurs after one of the following events:
    * powering on the computer
    * waking from sleep
    * switching from VGA (my pc) input to DVI (my mac) via the monitor
    I tested:
    * another video card (with native DVI): same problem
    * another computer (Mac mini): no problem
    * VGA: no problem
I returned the unit and got another. I ran Panther on it for a week with no problems. I just upgraded to Tiger. All the problems above are now happening again. It happened both on 10.4.0 and 10.4.6 (i.e. pre and post update).
If anyone has any experience at all in this, please post here or let me know if you need more info.
    G4 Quicksilver 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   20.1" BenQ Widescreen LCD

Sorry, forgot to mention it is independent of screen resolution.
Native screen res is 1680x1050. And it works perfectly sometimes, just not reliably. Have tried at 1024x768, 1280x1024, 640x480 and replicated the fault on all of them.
It also happens at startup, which made me think hardware. But it could be as the OS display drivers are loading. The fact that it worked with Panther makes me think software.
    Images available:
    http://www.geekhut.com/mac1.jpg
    http://www.geekhut.com/mac2.jpg
If it doesn't fail, the screen looks perfect. The same screen also works with a PC and other macs.
To clarify, the G4 is using an ADC-->DVI converter, but fault in this has been eliminated by:
    - using the same converter with another dvi monitor (no problem)
    - installing a native dvi graphics card in the g4 (same problem)

  • Need help with Quicksilver not starting up

Hi, this is my backup computer. It doesn't get a lot of use since I have a Mac Pro, but I still want to have it up and running again. The symptoms are when I press the power button it appears to come on, the fans inside power up but the white power button on the front doesn't stay lit up. Also there is no start up chime sound when it is turned on.
I have opened her up and removed and checked each memory stick. I realize it could be one of several things. I am hoping it is just the battery. That would be a cheap and easy fix. If it a bad logic board or something along those lines it wouldn't be worth repairing. I just wanted to hear some more thoughts on some other possibilities I might not have considered.
It is a 2001 Quicksilver 867 upgraded with a dual core 1.5GHz. Thanks in advance for any tips

If the Mac has not been connected to AC power for a while, it's most likely that the internal PRAM battery has discharged & needs replacement.

    Some things to try.
    * Reset the PMU http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1939
    * Resetting the Logic Board - Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure before replacing any modules.
