Adding HDMI

My computer only plays sound through headphones. I have it hooked up to TV by connecting VGA, I want to install an HDMI port so i can use that connection to connect computer with TV. Have read that i may need to upgrade power supply. • HDMI 2.0 firmware update?

    With the release of their 2013 4k TV models, Toshiba promised an HDMI 2.0 update for free via firmware by the end of 2013. Seeing as the end is near, is this promise still a reality?
    "Although these units are shipping with HDMI 1.4 level capability, Toshiba will also provide a free firmware upgrade to HDMI 2.0 level capability this December 2013 to support 4K 60fps content. 'Toshiba is leading the industry in 4K Ultra HD technology,' said Ramirez. 'While many brands are just getting started in Ultra HD, our CEVO 4K engine is second-generation technology. Now we are adding HDMI 2.0 level capability so users can enjoy our amazing picture quality with higher speed 60fps 4K content.'"
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57607131-221/hdmi-2.0-upgrade-path-where-do-the-manufacturers-s...

    Ahh, I see the file is in fact there, just dated wrong.  Click on the firmware file update under drivers, even though it is dated September 2013.  The actual file is the newest update.
    I applied it and it seems to have taken without any problems.  But unfortunately, Toshiba hasn't provided any test 4K content like other vendors or any means of getting 4K images or video onto the TV other than via a laptop with HDMI port that can output 4K.  If they could add a way to display 4K images via USB/SD/DLNA, that would be great!  As well as support for Youtube 4K streaming (the only place I've found 4K content that is ready to go).
    Any word, Toshiba, on additional updates?  Or are you officially done with these TV's?

  • I am getting the error "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP" when attempting to play a HD movie from iTunes to my TV.  The TV is a Samsung UN46B7000WF w/resolution 1080p

    Hello Apple Community,
    I am getting the message "THis movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)."  This is the first time I have tried to watch a HD movie that I bought from iTunes from my iMac to my TV.  (This is also the first attempt to go from my iMac to my TV.)  I have a Samsung LED tv that says it is HDCP compatible with Full HD (1080p) and Native resolution is 1920X1080.  I bought a Rocketfish Thunderbolt to/Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter (says support is up to 1920X1200 video resolution) and Mediabridge ULTRA Series HDMI Cable (35 Feet) - High-Speed Supports Ethernet, 3D and Audio Return category 2 certified (supports resolution up to 4K including 1440p, 1080p, 1080i and lower).
    I can get the iMac to display on my TV but am guessing that I have not managed the settings correctly in Display for either the iMac or the TV.  In addition, I do not have sound yet.  Although, the card from Mediabridge says that I need to update my drivers.  Any help/advice with the settings for iMac to TV to watch in HD and adding HDMI drivers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance for your assistance.
    Sincerely,
    Lisa

    Hello All,
    I have figured out the sound issue: System Preferences>Sound and choose the TV for output.

  • How do I connect the Apple TV to the home theater if the optical audio port is in use

    I had an airport express connected from the home theater system to the speaker out port on the express through which air play worked just fine. Then the express wouldn't work with my new router so I looked for something to replace it. The new Airport Express was the same price as the Apple TV and so I went with it for the added HDMI from NetFlix benefits. Now I find that the cables I used on the express won't work on the Apple TV. It wants an optical cable but there is only one port on the speakers and it is needed to get the sound from the TV to the speakers. So, is here a work around? An adapter or something? What I really wanted it for more than anything else was to use air play to get my music from the computer to the theater speakers.

    I have a further question about this. It turns out I do have 2 optical audio ports but I was told I wouldn't need it if it was connected via hdmi. I have 4 ports and they are all in use so the question is whether the best solution is to just get an optical audio cable and connect it directly or get an hdmi splitter so I can add in the Apple TV?

  • Apple TV a new paradigm

    My Apple TV does what it says it does and is useful. However I think it is a miss. I also have my Powerbook hooked up directly to a projector and using a wireless keyboard and mouse. I looked over the back shelf in the theater where the projector sits. I had a DVR, a Direct TV HD receiver, a 4 way HDMI switch, a Playstation 2 and an Apple TV, a mixboard and a sound line switch. The DVR is redundant with the laptop drive. I will limit my HDTV watching to watching a window driven by my Escape "myTVPVR" and I know it can only use S video as HD content is blocked outside of the satellite receiver. The HDMI switch seems to be incompatable and looks scrambled when trying to pass a signal. All these components and cables and switches plus a sound system requiring a preamp, scaler, and more switches are only there because the general purpose computer that could be doing all of the sound conditioning, scaling, conversion, dvd playing, recording, burning, sound and video switching, scheduling, is being factored out of the architecture of what should really be a home network server using the home theater as its foundation. With this set up and Leopard to manage multiple spaces on multiple screens using a bluetooth mouse and keyboard as the ultimate "remote" and the ability to go to a webpage and zoom the projector screen onto a small web video window to fill the screen. If you make a spreadsheet of the costs involved for dedicated components versus a full computer centric architecture, you immediately see that it is cheaper to do the computer centric architecture which doubles as the home server to which you also attach a large hard drive, printer, scanner. Cost are further reduced if you implement "network-over-power line". That solves the problem of distributing bandwidth throughout the home without signal drop or interference and better security. A brilliant move for Apple would be to make a "Wii" remote pointer device and use it to control the screen cursor. You could call this the "couch mouse", has a nice ring to it. This would allow control of the full OS X GUI or an icon based program like "Front Row". The cost of good sound would be greatly lowered if, say Bose, made a line of speakers with a built in power amp tailored exactly to the drivers, which get their channel sent to them via the power line network signal. This is an instant multi-room, multi-channel sound system which currently requires expensive dedicated components. Apple need to educate the public that this is what they need and that home networking is now simple enough for non-IT types. The campaign would have the slogan: "It's time to bring the network home".

    This is a rework and clarification of my original post that opened this topic.
    The Apple TV needs to be transformed from a separate appliance to become a powerful general pupose home server. The "digital hub" done right and for real.
    It would take the form of an enhanced Mac Mini with all the ports, WiFi N, Bluetooth, Express card slot and GPU found on a MacBook pro, adding HDMI 1.3 output and input as well as adding a dedicated converter with component and S video in. There would be a matching, separate optical drive so you could roll with the punches on the format wars.
    As the home server, home theater functionality is only one node.
    Nothing in the above requires any dramatic change to existing hardware and software, however three innovations would "knock the ball out of the park".
    1. Control a screen cursor with a "Wii"-like controler. Call it the "Air Mouse" or "Couch Mouse. It would have a scroll ball and 4 buttons like the Mighty Mouse. Make it possible to have several of these devices independently move different unique cursors with their own icon. I'll leave the gaming possibilities to your imagination. Pair this with the existing Bluetooth keyboard but enhance it with LED backlighting that times out after the last touch.
    2. Implement the home network as "signal-over-power-line". This could provide higher bandwidth throughout the house without interference, signal loss, with less range away from the house as a security point. This new network-over-the-power-lines would obviously be built-in to the "Super Mac Mini" server described above. Any device is on the network simply by plugging it in for power. A "paper station" for a scanner and printer could be placed anywhere. A power-line-signal to WiFi converter brick could be placed in any room to tie in MacBooks and iPhones.
    3. Build or partner with Bose to build home theater speakers with built in power amps tailored to optimize the driver/enclosure. When it's plugged in it takes its signal from the power line network per #2 above. A power-brick sized converter could change the network signal to an analog feed for any speaker that doesn't have this feature built-in. Typical 5.1 or 7.1 signal wire clutter and welding cable speaker wire would be a thing of the past.
    It would be ideal if projectors and large monitors were compliant with the 1920 x 1200 resolution common to computers or at least give a choice of resolution within OS X at the more common "TV" resolution of 1280 x 768 or 1920 x 1080. Right now OS X will not scale exactly to a "TV" display.
    Backup would be through a central drive on the power line network and "Time Machine" should be fixed to work with central network storage and enable backup to multiple clients.
    With this architecture any ad hoc node in the network can stream or store audio, video and text and control home security and automation if authorized.
    It should be pointed out also that with this architecture, the "TV" large screen, and Mac Mini Server can be placed on a rolling A/V cart and moved anywhere in the house and set up merely by plugging in one power cord. Any tie-in to a cable or satellite box is done with an adapter feeding it to the power line network.
    The trick here is to make home networking so simple, intuitive, standardized, accessible that the consumer experiences the ease of an iPhone.
    This would have to be introduced with advertising similar to the 1984 Mac TV spot and infomercials that demonstrate how easy this all is. It would show a huge garage sale for all the discrete devices and cables you could now remove. It would show a breakdown of the system cost for the server components versus the discrete component costs and emphasize that this system provides the home theater, home computer, and expands easily to include home security and automation.
    Obviously this network expands by adding iMacs, iPhones, Macbooks as ad hoc network nodes. Perhaps some elements of OS X Server would appear in plain vanilla OS X automating through icon based diagrams with each icon representing a node and that icon right clickable to adjust settings.
    The current pile of remotes for each component are banished forever. The theoretical universal remote control becomes a reality.
    The catch phrase of the campaign could be; "It's time to bring the network home".

  • Firewire input for OnLocation CS4

    Hi all,
    i have been using a firewire out of my Panasonic 3CCD HD camera to a firewire in on an older vista machine.  i have upgraded to an Envy 15-1050NR computer.  It has
    3 Universal Serial Bus(USB) 2.0,3rd port shared with eSATA Headphone-out/Microphone in combo drive ack (compatiblewith 3.5mm 4-conductor jack with stereo audio and mono mic); HDMI; eSATA + USB 2.0;1 RJ -45(LAN)
    For me to shoot directly to OnLocation, what should i get on the other end of my firewire connection from my camera to my new computer.  Will Firewire to HDMI work?  what are my best quality options to use OnLocation?
    Thanks in advance for your help.  Happy February!

    Looks like you're in a bit of a pickle. Your machine has neither a Firewire input nor a PCMCIA socket so that you could add one.
    OnLocation works only with Firewire ATM.
    An Adobe employee on a forum stated late last year that adding HDMI support to OL was "high on their list of priorities", so cross your fingers for CS5.

  • Wanna buy

    I'm waiting for a new upgrade of the Pro, not buying now. What i need is a Pro which can connect to my TV via HDMI and with my Apple 23" Monitor (which I have presently with a G5 non intel Mac.) I could keep my 23" monitor which I really like yet move it around from Tv to TV as needed via HDMI.
    Is this coming soon or am I just wasting my time.....

    This is a really easy and cheap problem to solve. Are you waiting for January in case Apple puts out a model with HDMI? I wouldn't hold my breath for that. The problem with an HDMI port is it's for TVs, not computer monitors. It cannot support the advanced resolutions and bit depths that DisplayPort does, so it could not replace Mini DisplayPort, it could only be an added port requiring that space be set aside for it. So while Apple added HDMI to the Mac mini, they're a lot less likely to add new ports to the laptops since they keep trying to shrink them further.
    And anyhow, there's no need for an HDMI port when the cables are so cheap. At monoprice.com a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI cable for your TV and a Mini DisplayPort to DVI cable for your 23" monitor start at under $10 each plus shipping. If your Apple 23" has a non-removable DVI cable, you'll probably need a DVI coupler for another $5.52 to connect the two male DVI ends together. That's it, you could be done for around $23 plus shipping.

  • MBP 2011 or MBP 2012?

    First time here, please bare with me. So I've alway been a PC but now that my hard drive has failed I really want to get a Mac. The new MBP retina 2012 just came out and I have been waiting for it since the release of MBP 2011 (because I waited for my PC to stop working then get a new one). However, I have been hearing that if you had a MBP 2011 then it's not worth the upgrade. So if it's not worth the upgrade then why buy it and not just get the MBP 2011? The MBP 2012 is as expensive as the MBP 2011 2.6 GHz and it doesn't have the ethernet port or optical drive which I would like to have. I know that there is the ethernet- USB cord but that just takes up a USB port and I would have to buy it. Apple being apple I know it will be expensive. Also, wouldn't it just be a retina display upgrade and not much more? I don't know too much about the hardware but what I've read is that the hardware of the MBP 2012 is difficult to fix or upgrade and you would end up having to buy a new on if things didn't work out. They're so expensive I would only like to buy one.
    I'm really not sure what to do. I'm thinking that I should get the MBP 2012 because it's a upgrade and since I will be keeping it forever. I need to make a decision before I start school again. Please help. Is the MBP 2012 worth it with it being so new and there are still bugs/kinks for it to be worked out? Or should I just get the MBP 2011 at the same price?

    The newly released line has both the macbook pro and the macbook pro with retina display.  You can buy the macbook pro (non retina version to lower the bottom line) and still enjoy the benefits of the new 2.6 quad core processor (if you are comparing the 15")  and configuring your hardrive as needed/ affordable. The non retina version can be upgraded in the future but your buying as much computer as your budget allows. You also get the thunderbolt connection (1), usb 3, firewire, superdrive, ethernet (if any of those things you are currently using) ......puts you in a good position as things continue to change. Which they will. If upgradability is an important factor than the non retina may be a consideration.
    I personally am trying to determine whether I can live without the firewire and drive, while determining the value of the newely added HDMI the retina has to offer.
    Good luck.

  • My desktop,model s5-1204, came without hdmi port. can one be added

    My desktop,model s5-1204, came without hdmi port. can one be added.
    it has a dvi

    Hi,
    Based on its specs, it has:
    Expansion Slots:
    1 PCI Express x16 (Gen2.0)
    3 PCI Express x1 (Gen2.0)
    1 PCI Express Mini Card x1
    The option: you can add a video card to the PCIe x16 and use a card which has HDMI port. It only has 220W PSU therefore you have to update the PSU too.

  • Adding second monitor to HP Beats Special Edition 23-n010xt All-in-One with HDMI Cable

    Trying to add a second monitor to all-in-one using HDMI cable.  All-in-one is HP Beats Special 23-n010xt, second monitor is Samsung SyncMaster S24B300, Op Sys is Windows 8.1.  Both are connected with HDMI cable, but Windows is not detecting second monitor.  Have also tried a new cable, no success.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

    Here are the specs for your HP Beats Special Edition 23-n010xt All-in-One CTO Desktop Computer. Based on the specs, this model doesn't have a video output of any kind. The HDMI port on the side is strictly an INPUT.
    The HDMI input allows you to use your computer screen with a game console or video player. To connect your computer to an external display, you will need to purchase a USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or many other adapters on the market.

  • Has anyone successfully added dual monitors to Macbook pro. Using cirago NuView HDMI?

    The NuView X2 looks to be trying to boot up but just keeps recycling.

    AFAIK, the Matrox is the only good solution out there... do you have the 13" non-retina 2012 model? It should work. Read the MacWorld review at the link provided on the Matrox page.

  • Does the mini DVI port cary audio if using a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter?

    Hello everyone,
    I've heard it is possible for a DVI port to transmit audio data to a HDMI connection if a DVI to HDMI cable is used, which will allow the sending of both audio and video to your TV. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
    I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port, but just wanted to check to make sure. My main goal is to get surround sound out of my powerbook. To do this by simply adding a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter would be GREAT!

    Hi Jonathan,
    I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port
    Yup, no audio, unfortunately. The audio will have to transmitted separately via the analog audio output.

  • [Solved] Issue setting HDMI audio to default

    Hoping I'm not overlooking something very simple here.
    I have a Radeon HD4650 in my HTPC which I'm trying to run the audio through the HDMI output. I've set the kernel parameter "radeon.audio=1" and am able to hear sound through HDMI when I specify it manually within each application (for example XBMC or VLC going to Audio->Audio Device->HD-Audio Generic, HDMI 0 HDMI Audio Output).
    From there I tried to set the HDMI audio as default by following the wiki here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … sound_card
    And here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … s_not_work
    I've tried several combinations within my .asoundrc and asound.conf including:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm {
    @func getenv
    vars [ ALSAPCM ]
    default "hw:0,3"
    defaults.pcm.card 0
    defaults.pcm.device 3
    defaults.ctl.card 0
    pcm.!default "plughw:0,3"
    ctl.!default "plughw:0,3"
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    ipc_key 2048
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    period_size 512
    buffer_size 4096
    rate 48000
    format S16_LE
    bindings {
    0 0
    1 1
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm dmixer
    pcm:iec958 {
    type plug
    slave.pcm dmixer
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    Most of these I just copied from the wiki or various forum posts I found and edited the proper device in. These appear to work, as the HDMI card shows up as default in alsamixer (I've made sure everything is unmuted here), but selecting the default channel in VLC still results in no sound, not even from the built in audio (I can change the output to the HDMI option and it works fine).
    I've also tried this which results in no sound:
    aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
    Is there something I'm missing here?
    Here's my aplay -l:

    A quick note here: I set this option in /etc/modprobe.d/:

    This moved the HDMI card up to device 0 instead of 1. I've tried everything above as well with plughw:1,3 when that was the HDMI device.

    I seemed to have solved this by following the advice in the Gentoo wiki:
    https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon#Audio_over_HDMI
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "hdmi"
    Those four lines in my /etc/asound.conf work. I'm not sure what the difference is between specifying "hdmi" vs the hardware device "hw:0,3".
    I still get no sound with `aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav` however, `aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav` works now. `aplay -D hdmi /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav` results in an error/warning:
    Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

  • NMP 12 core D700s failing to initialize thunderbolt bus 0 if the hdmi cable is plugged in

    Hey Everyone,
    I have a new Mac Pro, 12 core model with D700s, 32 GB RAM.  I started having issues about a month ago after only owning it for one month.  I noticed that sometimes when I booted up, some of my thunderbolt buses were not initializing.  I rechecked the literature to make sure (and correct me if i'm wrong), but you can have one thunderbolt device plugged in bus 0 (the bottom two ports) and still use hdmi.  I use the HDMI for my desktop on various monitors and have multiple devices that I need to connect over thunderbolt.  I was able to narrow it down and isolate the HDMI plug as being the culprit.  If i attach a display port to hdmi adapter to either of the bottom t-bolt ports, it boots up and initializes bus 0.  Any time I have an HDMI plugged in, its about 50/50 on if it will initialize bus 0.  When this happens, multiple restarts appear to catch it.  Since I work in a job where I might have to power down and relocate multiple times, this has been problematic.  Any one else seeing this or getting this?

    Good luck with that! Using it to update a BIOS is about as risky as it gets. Better off to have tried M-Flash, BIOS + ME selection choice.
    too late :( well. I downloaded the version from my mobo support page. it seems to have not failed me this time. though in the future, though I seem to have lucked out this time, I will try m-flash or bios + me. I mean I think I lucked out. I am by no means an expert, but my computer booted, so I assume the update was a success?
    Updating the bios didn't solve my problem though. any ideas?
