Adding Illustrator document as Image in Indesign

Hi,
Our client has this requirement.
Need to obtain an illustrator file dynamically, create a new indesign file, add the illustrator file as an image to the indesign file and then export the indesign file as pdf.
I am done with the exporting part.
Any thots, on how i can add the illustrator as an image, using the SDK?
thanks
-Ed.

Ed,
When you say "using the SDK", for most of us especially in this forum this means you are writing a plugin, in C++ language. Plan for a few spare months of hacking ...
To your rescue, scripting is handled next door in the Scripting forum. And I would encourage you to go there, you'll achieve your goal with maybe 20 lines of script.
Btw, JavaScript is a language that got almost nothing to do with Java. What you probably want is Adobe's JavaScript dialect named ExtendScript.

  • Importing Microsoft Word document with images to InDesign CS5

    Hey,
I'm trying to import a MS Word document that contains inline images to InDesign CS5.
I tried File->Place with checking "Import Inline Graphics" but unfortunately it imports the document without the images, there are blank regions where the images are suppose to be.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Kathy

Yes, aligning image on its own paragraph works, I will skip wraping text inside paragraph, this can be done inside InDesign. Here is one part of Internet PDF books I am talking about, both are in Serbian http://issuu.com/bojan_zivkovic/docs/prikazivanje_slika_u_adobe_photoshop_elements - word + indesign, http://www.scribd.com/doc/49583823/Nau%C4%8Dite-Adobe-Photoshop   - indesign only
Basicaly I am writing tutorials then turn them into PDF books, for now.
Thank you, I never try to insert image on its own paragraph.

  • Can you export images which have been pasted into an Illustrator document as separate files?

I have a multi-page Illustrator document (over 50 artboards) which contains lots of images that are all saved within the document (not linked in from seperate files) and all the images need to be exported as separate image files (similar to when you package a file in Indesign). The problem is the files are not linked, they are all saved within the document.
Want to avoid having to copy + paste every image into a new document in Photoshop and save individually as this will take forever.

Save the document as a PDF and Open in Photoshop. Select only the Images in the Open dialog and proceed from there.

  • A4 Illustrator document to A5 InDesign Master

    Hello all,
    I have the following problem:
I wanted to make an InDesign master for a book with A5 portrait page size. I thought it would be best to design the master in Illustrator and import it to InDesign as linked image, because I can easily make changes to the page colors for different chapters in Illustrator. Then I want to add textboxes and other objects in InDesign. So far so good.
So I designed an master in Illustrator, A4 landscape with 4mm bleed. Grid size 29.7 mm (because that is A4 width / 10).
BUT! It seems that the width of A5 is 148mm, so 2x A5 is 296 mm! That differs 1 mm in only the pagewidth, not the length.
Now what I want to do, is to make sure everything is still aligned correctly. I think the best way to to this, is to align everything to an 29.6 mm grid in InDesign. But when I import the Illustrator file, there are a few problems. I cannot import the entire document contents, because I have content outside my bleeding area (tried every option in the import options when using 'Place'). I'd be best when there's some way to import the entire content of the illustrator file When I try some workarounds, the lines are a bit off of the grid...
    Things I tried:
Straightforward importing and scaling. But then it didn't align to grid, since it imports at most the bleed layer, and when scaling that, it doesn't align to grid.
Changing the InDesign document size, that did the trick, but I don't think our publisher will like that format, so thats not an option.
Directly copying the vector artwork from Illustrator to InDesign, but that doesn't establish an image link and when scaling the artwork, some of the objects suddenly disappeared or got cut in half, pretty weird...
Scaling the artwork in Illustrator, but that did not really work out well since it contains many, many layers, paths etc. I experienced massive performance drops, resulting in not knowing whether it has scaled correctly or not.
Adjusting the bleeding margins in Illustrator so that they would match the size of the illustrator contents. Did not work since I used a grid size of 29.7 mm with 16 subdivs, so 1 subdiv = 1.85625 mm. Bleeding margins round at 3 decimals...
Remaking the document in Illustrator with a pagesize of 296×210 instead of 297×210, with the right grid sizes, and manually re-drawing the lines for the new grid will have the desired result I assume... But that would take a lot of work. And even then I cannot import the entire Illustrator file contents, at most the bleed of it (I could make a workaround, to make the bleed in Illustrator larger so everything fits inside, temporarily adjusting the bleeding margin in InDesign to match it and align the document to it and then fix the bleeding margin in InDesign and maybe in Illustrator).
So, any suggestions to reach my goal, without having to redraw the entire document?
    Thanks in advance,
    Roani52

    Thank you for your response
Yes, I did. Like I said: "(tried every option in the import options when using 'Place')"
Problem with that is when I do that, the document is 305×218, while it should be 304×218... When I downscale it 1mm, then everything is not aligned to the grid anymore. First of all, the bleeding margin does not align with the grid.
Second because it's downscaling the wrong amount, it should downscale 297->296 = 99.6632997% of the original size, and then have a bleeding margin of 4 mm... not downscaling 305->304 = 99.671312%. It gets even worse when I try to align that to the 29.6mm grid. And it's not possible to enter the amount I want to scale it, because of the rounding errors. Third because I have some content outside my bleeding margin in Illustrator. If I could get all of my content inside InDesign, I could allign that to the grid, which would solve my problems I hope.
    I tried:
    Bounding Box (All Layers)
    Art
    Crop
    Trim
    Bleed

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.

  • Is it possible to change the fonts in an illustrator document in Indesign or any other program BESIDES illustrator?

Is there a quick way to change/replace the font of an illustrator document in inDesign or any other app? Thanks

Depends on what is in the AI file.
CD does a normally good job unless there are meshes and a particular type of transparency (I forget which one). I usually don't get "fancy" AI files. Stock & Trade, bare-bones types of files. these open in a few of the applications I use daily. That said, I never do it unless I need to return a format other than AI--because, well, why? I always try to use the originating application with the exception of older EPS files. As a lot of the daily stuff I do is screen printing, and because most every screen printer I deal with use CD, at some point the art has to go into CD.

  • When placing an image in InDesign, it appears pixelated.  It is a 66mb file in a 6x9" document.

I am new to InDesign, as I've been creating all my documents for print in Acrobat as a PDF.  When I am placing an image, it appears pixelated.

    Hi,
This is an expected behavior, when you place an image in InDesign then it display the preview of the image however you this has no impact on the output unless the image placed is of low-resolution itself.
In order to have good resolution of images, you may switch to View > Display Performance > High Quality.

  • PLACING Images in Illustrator documents and saving.

Is there any way to just embed pictures in an illustrator document, because I know when you PLACE (File> Place) them in, it creates a link, and if you accidently delete a pic or something it won't show up in your document you open.  My question is:  Is it possible once you place images in your document, to embed them permanantly without having them linked at all, yet still preserve editing capability?
I save out a lot of PDF's and sometimes the images are linked to the pdf's as well.  I always have (preserve illustrator editing capabilities) checked when I save out my PDF's in order to make changes regularly.  ANY HELP??

To embed images go to you links palette flyout menu and choose embed.
Experienced Illustrator users usually do not embed because
makes your illustrator files larger and slower.
cannot keep track of resolution or color space
they can keep track of their files without losing
making edits later is a longer process
overall control and management of image quality is better
Embedding images on large projects increase the overall project file size, because you make a copy of the image within illustrator each time you embed.
To edit embedded images, you need to copy from illustrator and paste them into photoshop. Problem is you do not know what original resulotion they are and you maybe upsampling the image or changing the colorspace/profile. If you still want to embed, you are better off , keeping an original image in your job folder, that you can edit in Photoshop, and then use the links palette in Illustrator to relink.

(InDesign CS5) I have created hundreds of InDesign documents incorporating images stored on an external USB connected drive. I did a manual back-up to another drive at regular intervals but far from ideal.
I now have a network drive which is properly backed-up. I have copied all of the images and folder structure from the USB connected drive to this new drive.
My question is how I get all of the links in my indd files to point to the new drive. I am aware how to do it one file at a time, but is there a way of doing the same thing over many files/folders at a time?

It depends on how you organize your work. If you have one folder for images for a document, relinking one image should alert you that other missing images are in the same folder, but this assumes that images are missing. If the links window sees a clear path to the original location of the images, they aren't missing, so that won't work.
Another thing to try is to select all of the images in the links window and go to the fly-out menu and select Relink To Folder (navigate to the new folder, and you don't even have to select any images by name).
If you store your images in many different folders for the same document, you might want to either package the document to copy all of the images into one folder (you can specify to only copy images if you like) or use the fly-out in the links window (Utilities>Copy Links To…) and select or create a new images folder.

  • [InDesign CS3] Unable to place PICT image on InDesign document.

    Hi all,
I am trying to place a PICT type image on InDesign CS3 document but it is being shown disabled in open dialog. And when I drag this image(PICT type) to InDesign document, I am getting an error message "Quick Time and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture".
Note: This problem is coming on both MAC and Windows.
    Thanks in anticipation

When you place content from InDesign, why are you exporting it as JPG?
    You can either
save the INDD file and place it directly into InDesign or
export the INDD as PDF/X-4 and place it into InDesign.
This should result in better quality than using JPGs which will be always a loss of crispyness, change of colors, blurry text and loss of quality.

  • Placed an image in a new Illustrator document.  Tried to change the Output Mode in the Output Dialog but could not select "Separations Mode".

Placed a DCS2 document image in a new Illustrator document.
Tried to change the Output Mode in the Output Dialog but could not select "Separations Mode".

I would check with the makers of ULTRASEPS.
I never heard of it, just checked their website, I don't think they support Illustrator:
What do I need to use UltraSeps?
UltraSeps requires Adobe Photoshop version CS2 or higher on Windows and Macintosh.
Its also 100% compatible with Photoshop Creative Cloud and Creative Cloud 2014.

  • Adding illustrator file to Indesign

Hey guys! im using Indesign CS5, and im trying to add some illustrator pages into an exisiting indesign file i have an existing folio of work on.
I read somewhere that if you click and drag an illustrator file into indesign it should work, but when i do, it becomes very pixilated and the resoloution quality is reduced even though the illustrator file is in A3 and the indesign file pages are also in A3.
I have included a screenshot of what happens when i click and drag the illusrator file.
If anyone can help me, please reply asap! Hahah my folio is due in a few hours
    Thanks

InDesign creates a raster thumbnail called a proxy to display images placed in InDesign.
This is for placement purposes only.
As InDesign creates a dynamic link to your file - it will output the Vector file - but it displays a raster version for layout purposes only.
Using the View>Display>High Performances will generate a higher resolution thumbnail for viewing in the layout only.
Again, it's always dynamically linked to your vector file.

  • Fonts are substituted when viewing uploaded InDesign/Illustrator documents

In my test InDesign page in the Cloud, the document fonts (Futura, Zapfino Extra) are replaced by Myriad when the page is displayed. Needless to say this negates the value of having it in the cloud in the first place: I can't share with clients or collaborators for comments and feedback, since they won't see the actual layout. I could put a PDF in the cloud, but I could more quickly, and just as easily send them a PDF via Dropbox or email.
The same problem exists with live text in an Illustrator document.
Any word on when this will be fixed/upgraded?

Thanks, David. I had a feeling that was the problem so I wanted to check. It's a pity, because it vitiates the feature a great deal. I don't recall the same problem with CS Review, but then I also didn't use it much as I had little application for it at the time. Illustrator has its embedded PDF that could be used for a web preview, but perhaps if an INDD is saved with the maximum size preview that could also be a solution. At least 1024x1024 would be a comfortable size for viewing.
I've not tested a PSD with live text, but I assume the embedded comp would be what's displayed, so that should not be an issue.
[By the way, someone should have a strong word with the marketing folks. This limitation is not hinted at anywhere in the CC promo. Quite the reverse, in fact. Like the unexpected requirement to purchase tablet apps, which the promo says are "included", marketing missteps like this can backfire badly, as anyone familiar with the field will tell you. I've already seen negative reactions in various forums to what is perceived as (and is, in fact, even if unintentional) false advertising. Just because it seems like a minor detail doesn't mean it won't upset customers who feel they've been misled.]

  • PDF created in Illustrator CS5 causing problems in InDesign CS5

I have created a wallpaper / background in Illustrator CS5 that measures 646mm x 303mm (it's for an A4 folder cover) is in CMYK colour mode and is made up of only 2 layers.  Layer 1 is 3 rectangles - 1 the size of the page and 2 that are 50% of the full page.  They are all filled in with a gradient.  Layer 2 is 2 x waves made up os 2 lines then "Object", "Blend", "Specified Steps - 20", "Make".  This is the extent of the graphics on this page.  I have then saved it as a PDF (Illustrator Default) and it's size is 518k - pretty reasonable size.
Here's my problem -  When I place the PDF in InDesign as the background for my folder it is slowing all my processes down is I put my view to "High Quality".  I can move, resize, type or place anything without the program crashing or a monumental delay in whatever it is that I am trying to do.  Printing is also taking an excessive amount of time when I try to print off the PDF (created from the InDesign file and being all of 1.2MB).
Also - the illustrator document has now crashed once.
Other things that might be useful to know is that I am running on Windows XP, Office 2010, 32 bit, and have the whole CS5 package.
I can't think of any other information to give.
Do you think there is a system problem?  File issue?  Any advice would be FANTASTIC.
    Thank you!!!!!

That's an issue with the shared PDF stuff in newer versions of Acrobat. There's realy no fix for this misbehavior, it's more or less a "hard" compatibility issue.

  • How to place the images in Indesign xml file by Javascript?

How to place the images in Indesign xml file by Javascript?
We got the Indesign xml file, how to give the image placement link by Indesign javascript? Please help me its urgent.

    Hi,
You can pass the image url as a href attribute=> file:///Users/me/Documents/my_pic.jpg directly within your xml. It just needs that you pass a local, static and valid url.
If you want to add image later once the xml is flowed and so target specific nodes and inject images, it's a bit more complex. If the node is not part of the layout, you may try to reach the XMLElement objet and such an attribute, then layout the element.
    var x = some XMLElement
    x.xmlAttributes.add("href","file:///Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" );
If already placed, then you have to get the associated pageItem, then place your file into it.
    pagItm.place ( File ( "/Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" ) );
    Hope that helps,
