Adding internal HD question

My G4 came with 3 internal 40G HDs. One quit working years ago and the start up HD recently began having kernel panics--the most recent of which I can't get around.
I thought I might be able to start up using the other HD and tried loading 10.0.3 on it but it hangs up at 'Optimizing System'.
I have another HD from another G4 which has Tiger loaded, and my thought was that if I put this in my "panic'd" machine I'd be able to use Tiger for start up and then be able to access my files on the 40G HD. Is that correct/likely?
If so, here's my problem/question: The 40G HDs were all connected to one cable which came from the top of a PCI card. They have what I think are SCSI connectors? The Tiger loaded HD I'd like to add has a different connector--ATA?
Can I simply connect the newer HD like it was connected in the other G4, and if so, will I need to change it to 'slave'?
Hope that all makes sense.
Thanks!

Hi, tab -
If the others are SCSI, and the 'new' one is ATA, then, yes, you can connect it like it was in the machine it is coming from. However, you would not jumper it as Slave - when an ATA bus has a single device (drive) on it, that device should be jumpered as Master. Exception - if the drive is a Western Digital brand and has a setting called "Single", use that instead of Master.
The designations Master and Slave on IDE/ATA buses confer no preference or priority, at least in Macs; they are simply addresses. If you have two drives on the ame bus, one set as Master and the other as Slave, either can be used as the primary boot drive.
Exception - if the machinne is ever set up as the Target machine in a Firewire Target Disk Mode config with another Mac, then only the drive set as Master on the ATA bus on the Target machine will appear on the Host machine's desktop.
As for whether that will allow you to access the non-available 40GB SCSI drives, that's a different thing. It would depend upon the reason those drives are presently not available. One way to check in advance is to boot to a valid install CD - if the drives appear when booted to it, then they should be available when the machine is booted to the ATA drive. If not, then probably not.

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • How do I assign one of the license tokens to a newly added internal user?

I have 6 out of 10 licenses assign and I added another user, assign him "roles" and now I need to assign a internal netpoint license token to the user. How is this done? It's been a while.
    Thanks

    Hi Scott,
I assume you have Current Licensed Users: 6/ Total User Licenses: 10 and you want to add a licensed user role to a new user in web tools.
If this is your question then go to Business Partner --> Users --> select the user --> Security --> Roles --> add the licensed user and roles from the dropdown menu.

  • Adding Internal Drives

    Hi,
    I'm new to Macs and hope you guy's out there can help me. I have emailed WD, and spoken to Apple support without success and spent hours looking through discussion group threads trying to find an answer to what appears to be a simple question;
Which internal drives are compatible to the MacPro 4.1 (2009)?
My main concern is that all the Apple stuff refers to screwing the internal drive (Apple Store variety) to the carrier and sliding it into place(cable not required). So far so good. But when I look at Western Digital web site (and others) I see that it is suggested that a cable is required connecting the drive to motherboard.
To me as an engineer (retired) these are not compatible if the drive does not fit A) onto the supplied carriers and B) there is a cable connection!
Please, I'd like you techie guy's help me understand what suppliers don't want to to tell me about compatibility How can I tell if the drive will fit the carrier, is the cable required, and will a cable prevent assembly?
Is this an Apple way of shutting out the competition!

.........Which is why I put 'certain'. Thanks for the rude reply, I understand exactly what I have read.
What is to stop the OP taking a drive out of a MyBook? ( as I have done-I use it for storage only). We don't know what other hardware he has or what else he is going to do with it. That's why I included the link so that he could read and understand it in it's entirety which is something you don't appear to have done with my post. If I had known about any well known Seagate/Lacie issues I would have included links to those too.
The OP mentioned WD so I pointed him in what I thought was the direction of a useful FYI. He reads, he makes his choice, he returns to clarify if necessary.

  • Adding Internal Drives to G5

I need more space on my G5.
Currently I have the original 80G Hard drive that came with it, and an added 200G internal drive. I work with video and am constantly having to delete old projects in order to make room for new ones.
As I understand it, the G5 will only allow for 2 internal drives. One being the start up drive (which should hold all applications/Library/Ect.) and then another "scratch" drive for actual projects (i.e. video/audio capture). Am I correct?
I am a novice still trying to understand what/what not to put where. All I know is that I work with hours of video and am in desparate need of more space. So any suggestions/advice you may have will be greatly appreciated.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.6 Ghz Power PC 1.25 G Memory

    Trade up ;-(
You are working with a G5 1.6 single cpu. No PCI-X, and PCI bus has a bug that limits disk writes to 75MB/sec with any PCI card interface (SATA, SCSI etc).
I would forget the 80GB for work and put it aside for now, and invest in 500GB drive. Would be nice to build an external SATA RAID.
There are some internal dual and triple drive bracket kits that run off SATA controllers as well - you ought to have ample room for one (or two).
But I always thought that working with video it was very helpful to have dual cpu or better.
Any investment in SATA drive would help now and later, but I would look at G5 2.3 Dual Core or something too.
A boot drive, media drive, scratch can be a drive or drives set up in RAID. Even a FW800 and FW400 for backup, archive, capture etc.
Some drives like Seagate 7200.10 750GB would be nice, but you need to upgrade to 10.4.6+. Also, my guess is that you would notice things run better with 2-4GB RAM. Definitely more than 1.25, probably double that.

  • Adding internal tab values

    Hi all,
i have a query, i have a internal table in which i have wage types like bleow
    1000         5000
    1001     0
    1002     500
    1003     0
    1010     2000
    1011     0
    1012     50
    1013     0
    1020     500
    1021     0
    1022     50
    1023     0
but i dont want the data like this. i want the addition of similar group of wage types
    like below.
    1000     5500
    1010     2050
    1020     550
    how can i get this?
    thanx...

    Hi,
I would suggest using the COLLECT Statement.
    Basic form
    COLLECT [wa INTO] itab.
    Addition
    ... SORTED BY f
    Effect
COLLECT is used to create unique or compressed datsets. The key fields are the default key fields of the internal table itab .
If you use only COLLECT to fill an internal table, COLLECT makes sure that the internal table does not contain two entries with the same default key fields.
If, besides its default key fields, the internal table contains number fields (see also ABAP/4 number types ), the contents of these number fields are added together if the internal table already contains an entry with the same key fields.
If the default key of an internal table processed with COLLECT is blank, all the values are added up in the first table line.
If you specify wa INTO , the entry to be processed is taken from the explicitly specified work area wa . If not, it comes from the header line of the internal table itab .
    Example:
Compressed sales figures for each company
DATA: BEGIN OF COMPANIES OCCURS 10,
    NAME(20),
    SALES TYPE I,
    END OF COMPANIES.
    COMPANIES-NAME = 'Duck'. COMPANIES-SALES = 10.
    COLLECT COMPANIES.
    COMPANIES-NAME = 'Tiger'. COMPANIES-SALES = 20.
    COLLECT COMPANIES.
    COMPANIES-NAME = 'Duck'. COMPANIES-SALES = 30.
    COLLECT COMPANIES.
The table COMPANIES now has the following appearance:
    NAME SALES
    Duck 40
    Tiger 20

  • Captiave 2 - Adding Buttons to Question Slides

I need to use the Captivate Question Slide "maker" to create
interactive questions with navigation back to the "Jeopardy-esque"
main page. When doing so, the question slide maker prevents adding
    buttons/navigation, etc.
    Any work arounds, hints, suggestions?
    Thanks...

Hi Beta Bob and welcome to our community
As you have seen, you cannot insert interactive objects
(Buttons, Click Boxes or Text Entry Boxes) on Question slides.
The only workaround I can think of is to sort of simulate the
question slide using these objects on a standard slide.

  • International Applecare Question

Hey guys. So, my iPod Shuffle stopped responding two weeks before I'm about to fly back to Canada after a year abroad in the UK. I'm thinking about getting a Nano, and I know that I want to buy the Applecare, since, as much as I love Apple products, they do have a tendency to break a lot.
But if I buy the iPod in the UK, does that mean I have to buy Applecare in the UK as well? Or can I buy my iPod in the UK and the Applecare in Canada? If I have to buy the Applecare in the UK, what does that mean in terms of my coverage for Canada?
    Thanks!

    4.  If said person abroad calls a cellphone in the USA will the receiver be charged? From what I have read this depends on the country. So does USA charge you for recieving a foriegn Skype call? I have read that only the caller is charged, but I wanted to get a confirmation on this.

Hello and welcome to the Skype Community.
With Skype there are no international calls. All calls are local worldwide irrespective of origin or destination.
    1. Yes. You can call worldwide using credit and there are no additional costs.
    2. No. It works without wifi
    3.  A Skype call from anywhere travels via the internet and only breaks to PSTN or a cellular network at a point close to the recipient's phone or device.
    4. Some call recipients may be charged and some will not. It depends upon their plan but, even if some are charged, the amount would only be a few cents. The cellphone carrier will see the call as local [3. above].
    5. Yes.

  • Added Internal Drive as Eject option !! But why??

Recently I added a 1TB internal drive to my PowerMac G4. The drive is operating as expected. However, I have the option to "Eject" the drive. This is my first Mac with multiple internal drives. Is this normal functionality to be able to "Eject" an internal drive? Is there a way to disable the "Eject" option on the drive.
For those of you wonder how I connected a 1TB drive into my G4.
I purchased from MacMall a Seagate 1TB BARRACUDA 7200.11 1TB INT SATA NCQ HD which obviously has a SATA connection. I then purchase a SATA to IDE converter from Cooldrives.com ($17). That permitted my SATA drive to connect to the internal IDE cable.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    John

Yes that is perfectly normal. All drives can be 'ejected' even internal ones. Even if you drag your boot drive to the trash (but don't let go) it will show the eject icon aswell.

  • Adding first server questions

We are moving and are going to be adding a server (Quad 2.5 G5 w/ 2x500 HDs). We are currently have the internet connection coming in (static IP) to an AEBS running two printers and an AEX on the same network running the other. All the machines use the wireless network for internet access and printing. Email is via a hosted Exchange solution and another company hosts our web site. We have one spare machine that does limited file server work, but most folks have stuff on their hard drives.
I have read the manuals on OS X server and a couple of after market books and, since much of it is somewhat familiar, I am relatively confident about many of the software setup issues. However, I have gotten some conflicting advice about the physical configuration and hoped you guys could help.
We want to be able to use the server as a file server, with better access control than the sharing preference, have remote users connect with a VPN, use the wireless network for internet access and printing. We might want to host web sites via an intranet or be able to access them from outside, but don't want them to be associated with the domain name that is the real web site.
My first question is about the interface between the airport network and the server. I was originally told that the cable to the internet should go into one of the servers ports and the other should connect to an AEBS. I should set up the server to act as a firewall and serve up DCHP addresses. However, some of what I have read says that this is a bad idea--that the AEBS or something else should be the first in line and that the server should be connected to the LAN port of the AEBS. Which is best?
    Other questions:
Should I use the server print services or just the bonjour through airport?
I don't need to set up the mail services, correct?
    Anything else I should consider?
    Thanks

Since no one else has chimed in yet I'll pipe up and suggest you consider another configuration: connect your internet modem to a standalone firewall/router. (You'll either need one with a built in switch, or you'll need to connect a standalone switch to it.) Then connect both your server and Airport to the switch. The Airport will be set to bridge your wireless network to the wired network.
This way you focus your server resources on real server stuff, while the router takes care of grunt work like NAT and DHCP. You also gain some isolation for your server compared to having it function as your firewall and gateway.
Just an alternative to think about.

  • Super Simple Internal HD Question

I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5, and I'm running out of space on my 160 GB internal Maxtor hard drive. I found this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7L300S0/ which is the size I want. I just want to know, will this fit in the second hard drive slot? Also, is this a good price? Ok, so that was two questions... I lied.
    -Seth

At $149 that price is high. You can get the newer faster Maxline III for $125 plus shipping here:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144032
The Maxtor MaxLine III 7V300F0 300GB is 10% faster than the previous model. If you want a smokin deal on the old model look at this deal:
    Maxtor 300GB 16MB SATA-150 & Cintre SATA Enc. $69.99 A/R
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=18204 18&sku=R301-1063
You get the previous Maxtor 300GB that is still faster than the other drives plus an external SATA/USB 2.0 enclosure thrown in. There is a $60 mail in rebate to deal with and $13 in shipping but this is the best deal I have seen on a Maxtor 300GB. And yes you can put the drive inside your G5 and use the case for another drive.
If I did not already have 8 Maxtor 300GB drives, I would be buying on this deal too!
