Adding iPhoto stills to iMovie, Adding iPhoto stills to iMovie

Working with the new versions of iMovie, iPhoto - when I select a photo from iPhoto library (in iMovie) and drag it too the time-line - i get a circle with a slash mark icon - and it won't allow me to add the photo.  When I select a photo from Aperture, it adds that one without objecting. What's wrong with my iPhoto library that's making iMovie reject its photos?

5,500 images is a bit over the top for an iMovie project.
QuickTime Player 7 Pro ($30) can import a folder of sequentially named files at various frame rates and can do it in just a few seconds.

  • Still images added to iMovie HD disappear when exporting

I have added a few still images to my iMovie HD movie project, using the Media/Photos tabs in iMovie. The images are JPEGs in my iPhoto library. I place the images in the timeline, but when I export the iMovie project to my video camera or to an MPEG file, the images disappear. Any suggestions welcome.

While you may get a better response regarding your camera export in the iMovie HD forum, I am intrigued by your loss converting to MPEG. Could you be more specific regarding your work flow for this process?

  • Locking clips, adding slideshows from iphoto to imovie and reverting clips.

I have a few questions about imovie HD 6.
    1. I am working on adding snips of video and pictures to my imovie project. However, I have several small clips that I want to add to a single audio clip. Is there a way to lock several video clips to my audio clip? It seems as though when I try to add another 'lock' the first one disappears. (I thought of maybe splitting the audio clip up. Is there an easier way that i'm not seeing?)
    2. Is there a way to keep the quality from an iphoto slideshow after importing it into imovie. Is it even possible to import an iphoto slideshow into imovie?
    3. I had a large 1 hour clip that I split up into 20 or 25 clips. I then added some effects to some of the clips. If I decide later that I do not want a particular effect and click the 'revert to original' button. Will it revert my entire 'library' of clips that I created back into the 1 hour clip I started with?
    Thanks,
    Elly

    1. The function locks an audio clip to a video clip, not a video clip to an audio clip. So, after locking an audio clip to a video clip, if you then lock the audio clip to another video clip it will unlock the first one. That's why you are observing that the lock disappears. If you lock the audio clip to the first video clip in a series, that will keep the audio clip in place for the entire series when you slide the first clip along the time line, pushing the other video clips ahead of it. I would not split up the audio clip into several pieces, unless you intend to move or change the sequence of the individual video clips.
    2. In iMovie playback, your iPhoto images are displayed in low resolution. Therefore, your iPhoto images always will look worse in iMovie playback. However, the display in your final product DVD will look much clearer than in iMovie playback. Yes, you can export an iPhoto slide show into iMovie. The best way that I have found is to use the iPhoto file menu to export the slideshow to your desk top as a full quality Quicktime Movie (File/Export/Full Quality) and then drag that Quicktime movie into your iMovie project as one long clip. You can also drag it directly into an iDVD project as a movie.
    3. The "revert" function will operate only on the split clip that you select to revert. The remaining split off clips will remain un-reverted. For example, if you split a clip into clips A, B, and C, and then revert clip A back to the original, clip A will revert back to the entire original clip that you had split into A, B, and C. (In your case, that would be the entire one hour clip that you started with, with no effects in it.) So clip A will now also include B and C and all other clips that you may have split from the original clip. But B and C also will still remain untouched as additional separate clips. That leaves you with having to re-edit clip A to avoid having repetitious clips. Rather than using the "revert to original" function to clear an effect from a clip, instead use the "clear" function. Each time that you use the "clear" function on a clip, it will remove the last added effect from the selected clip but will not effect any of the other clips.
I hope that I have answered your questions. I suggest that you set up a small test iMovie project and experiment with the "revert" and "clear" functions.

  • Editing Still Images with iMovie and iPhoto

How do I turn "stills" created from imported film footage into jpegs? Basically I want to export still images from my videos into iphoto so I can edit and print the images - any ideas? When I drag the still images within iMovie 08 they won't drag to either the desktop or iphoto. HELP!

    1) Position your cursor where you want to create the still.
    2) Right-click (or control-click) and select "add still frame to project
    3) Right-click on the still frame that has been added to your project and select "Reveal in Finder"
    4) Right click on the jpeg file that has been revealed in the finder and select "copy"
    5) Paste the jpeg file onto the desktop or within a folder.
    6) Drag the jpeg file into iPhoto.

  • Importing stills from iMovie '08 to iPhoto

I am trying to create a photo album. I have extracted still images from video footage of sporting events and put them into an iMovie project file. I want to export these from iMovie to iPhoto (or import them in the reverse direction) but I am unable to do this. iPhoto refuses to open the iMovie project file to allow me to import. I need to be able to extract still photos from video as all of the sporting events have been shot on an HD camcorder and not a still camera. I have even tried publishing the iMovie project to the media browser but I can't get iPhoto to recognize this either. Any suggestions?

Are you using iMovie 7? Control-click on the image and select Add Still Frame to Project. Then Control-click on the still frame and select Show in Finder. You'll be taken to the folder where the still jpg is located and can copy it to the desktop.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is there a way to create a still image from video in either imovie or iphoto?  I want to add an arrow to an imovie and so far have not had any luck but I'm thinking I might be able to add an arrow to a photo and then incorporate it into the movie.

I'm still trying to point out a location in an imovie with an arrow.  I thought I might be able to insert an arrow in a still photo from the imovie and then reinsert the photo in the movie but my attempts at capturing a still frame from a video in imovie or iphoto haven't worked so far.  Any ideas any one???

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. You can find it by googling MPEG Streamclip Squared 5.
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
Also, for how to add a pointer, try Karsten Schluter's website for a good post on how to do this.

  • Stills: Great in *.ppt and iPhoto Horrid in iMovie

Hello all. I'm putting together a slideshow celebrating my parent's 50th that I hope to burn through iDVD so all my siblings and parents can have a copy they can play on their respective DVD players.
I edit my photos in Photoshop Elements 2 and have them cropped or padded out to 4:3 ratio jpeg files.
When I place them into iMovie (v3.0.3) their quality is horrid. (For example, when looking at the shoulders of people, they clearly look stair stepped down instead of a smooth slope).
A slideshow within iPhoto looks fine.
A full-screen slideshow within Powerpoint looks great as well.
I really would like to use iMovie for the ease of editing timing, transitions, titles, etc., but since I'm much more proficient with Powerpoint, I'm beginning to think I should go that route instead and try to save as a Quicktime movie to be imported into iMovie, then on through iDVD. (I just know that with every conversion/export/import I do I'm increasing my chance of agony geometrically!)
However, I'm leery to do this: How big can a Quicktime movie saved from a Powerpoint file be? How big of a Quicktime file can iMovie import? (What are the size limitations for the different programs?) Could I end up with the same photo quality problems in iMovie after I imported a Quicktime movie anyway?
I've read several threads on the jiggle still images tend to have on tvs after having been made in iMovie and have read about the DES deinterlacer (sorry if the name is wrong, you know what I mean, I didn't open a new window to confirm its name) freeware, so I'm aware this issue is likely to need resolving as well. If so, at what point in the process do I do this? After the conversion to an iMovie project (right before I burn a DVD)?
If I end up bypassing iMovie and burning the Quicktime movie from Powerpoint directly in iDVD (I'm assuming I could do this.), will I still have the same interlacing problems?
I'm jazzed about my project and have tons of family photos to use and songs picked out for each "chapter," but can't move forward until I receive some guidance.
Please!!!!!! I've already gleaned tons of useful tips from you folks. Thanks to the regular posters.
(I think I'm running Quicktime 7.0.3. and am in North America, so no PAL here)

Thanks for the info everyone. I exported it as a Quicktime Movie to my desktop, then dropped it into iDVD and burned it.
It looks much better once it's in iDVD (even on my Mac screen) and about the same on a 36 inch tv.
At the same time I was going to try and "Make a Movie" out of my Powerpoint slideshow to burn on the same DVD to compare qualities between the 2 and it crashed every time I tried. I must have a file bigger than Powerpoint can convert to Quicktime already. Just for future reference: Does anyone know how big slideshows can be in Powerpoint and still "Make a Movie?" Is it a limitation of Powerpoint or of my physical harddrive space and RAM?
I'm jazzed and ready to cruise.
Thanks for helping me make my parent's 50th special!

  • Adding pictures from iPhoto to iMovie ?

I have recently updated to iLife 11. I am a little new to imovie and get on with it quite well but i don't seem to be able to add stills. I am clicking on the photo icon and opening iphoto but then nothing...... what do I do? I have tried dragging and dropping, copying and pasting but nothing seems to work
Any guidance will be gratefully received

From your description, I can't tell if you don't know how to do it, or if you do know how to do it, but it is not working.
[Here is a video tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#photos] that shows the basics.
If it is not working, post back and maybe we can help troubleshoot.

  • How do I save a still that I have extracted from iMovie and save it to iPhoto?

I'm trying to save a still that I have extracted from imovie.  So far, all I can see is that it can be saved in the imovie project.  I need to save it to iphoto.  Any help would be appreciated.  I'm running Lion and have aperture too.

Imovie 11? It isn't that easy. You could navigate to the movie event, drag that into Streamclip, and use MPeg streamclip to make a still from the movie. The freeze frame isn't a photo you can get out of imovie, as far as I know.
Here is a youtube video on how to do it with iMovie 11.

  • My iPhoto videos are not showing up in iMovie? I have quit, shut down my Mac and they still are not showing up? What can I do to resolve this?

My iPhoto videos are not showing up in iMovie? I have quit, shut down my Mac and they still are not showing up? What can I do to resolve this?

It is also posible to go back to the imovie you had before, it is still on your computer - you go to Finder and it is in a folder in your programs. Many others have gone back to the old program, and perhaps I am also going to do that too.
In the new imovie it does not come up the question "do you want to download these videos ...."
You shall in imovie open your iphotolibrary in top on the left side,( it is standing under libraries) and  you can see all the events you have in iphoto, then you can open the event, you shall use and drag the movies and pictures from the events in iphoto to an events in imovie. If you can,t see your libraries, you can click on a show button on top of the left side.
On the picture you see here iphoto is market on the top of the left side and the pictures to the left is my iphoto-events - and there I can open the one I shall use, and find my movies.

  • IPHOTO QT STILLS VS iMOVIE KB STILLS

If a slide show is preparred in iPhoto using KB effect to reduce jaggies, then the slide show is exported as a QT movie, then imported into iMovie, then iMovie dragged into iDVD to get the best quality-how will the stills compare to importing the stills directly into iMovie and applying the KB effect, then dragging the iMovie into iDVD?
Thank you in advance for your time,
    Art

    All,
Karl has really cleared some of my fog around this issue with this great post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2105598&#2105598
We may have to burn a DVD or two to see what the stills actually look like when they are played back on the TV, but the iMovie still rendering "bug" he identifies is the root cause of "jaggies" that become included in iMovie stills and eventually find their way to iDVD.
    Net:
    (1) Photo stills from iPhoto (with or without a KB effect, slideshow or not) will never look very good when iMovie plays them back because iMovie is an editor tool first and a playback tool second (it refuses to show all the still quality during playback no matter what our preferences indicate). This was one of the main things misleading me...
    (2) Therefore, stills will look better viewed on a TV (from a DVD or tape) than they do in iMovie.
    (3) This will only be true, however, if we always prevent iMovie from rendering the stills on the way through the iDVD encoding process to the TV.
    (4) Poor iMovie still rendering is the "bug" Karl describes and the workarounds to avoid it are to either: (a) import all stills with a KB effect (they become movies and iMovie won't attempt to render them), or, (b) if you have stills that do not have the KB effect, then the Share --> iDVD command needs to be bypassed altogether by dragging the iMovie project name in the title bar right into the iDVD window (to do this I found that I had to hold down the mouse button momentarily until the title icon darkened before I began to drag).
Now I'll need to do some tests...
    Great post Karl!
    Cheers,
    Al

  • How do I make a still frame in iMovie and send it to iPhoto?

How do I take a still frame from a movie clip in iMovie and send it to iPhoto?
The goal is when I export my movie to iDVD, I want to use still clips from my movie as the rotating images. Right now it either plays through the DVD in the rotating part or I can drag pictures from iPhoto into the slots.
    Thanks!

  • Still can't see iPhoto in iMov Media Browser after deleting "&'s" and prefs

Combed the discussions - many references to this problem - I tried deleting ALL question mark symbols "?" from ALL my iPhotos - an arduous task but I know I got them all - then deleted the preferences and rebuilt iPhoto with command option - everything in it... Still no luck viewing my iPhoto libraries in iMovie - so can't increase duration times because "show photo settings" grays out - does ANYbody have a fix?
    thanks!

I saw your post earlier when I was having the same difficulty. A recent post suggested rebuilding the iPhoto Library using Shift Option when opening the application. I tried that and it created a new iPhoto Library_2 folder. That folder showed up in the Media Browser, so I just imported all the photos in my previous iPhoto folder into the new one. It worked for me; I hope it works for you.

  • I inadvertently imported all of my iPhoto videos to my iMovie library.  I have tried everything possible to delete them.  I still want to keep them in iPhoto however. What can I do?

I inadvertently imported all of my iPhoto videos to my iMovie library.  I have been unable to delete them. How can I delete them from the iMovie library without deleting them fro iPhoto?

Did you import them into an Event Folder? Or are they still just showin up under the iPhoto Videos folder? Anything inside of the iPhoto Videos folder cannot be deleted, because it is under the full control and jurisdiction of iPhoto and is merely 'shared' from iPhoto and made visible to iMovie. Everything else can first be deleted, then moved to the Trash. To find the items that have been marked for deletion under iMovie '11 go to the pull-down tab at the bottom of the iMovie window frame labeled Show: and choose 'Rejected Only'. Then when you see all the clips with red stripes on them Select All (⌘ Command key + a). Then click on the button labeled Move rejected to Trash.

  • IPhoto stills looking bad in iMovie

I've created a slide show from iPhoto in Imovie as I wanted to add titles, transitions, music etc.
When I exported the movie to iDVD I got very pixelly low-res images - rubbish! I suspect that the pictures have been downsized in the export process. How do I overcome this?

I tried all sorts of wriggles on this, but got no further. Firstly iDVD (v.4) didn't want to recognise the iMovie file (also v.4) thru importing nor thru dropping the icon into iDVD. It told me the movie was not in a recognised file format, even though it was simply a saved iMovie. I tried using the iDVD Customize drawer to select the movie, and got a movie I could preview in iDVD, but it had no start button, so couldn't be burned.
Later I wasable to get the original file recognised so it could be imported into iDVD, but after burnig the results were no better than the original.
On some attempts I got a message to say there was unrendered content, so I clicked the "Render & Proceed" button. It briefly displayed the file name of the first still image, then went straight to burn in the poor quality.
So it seems the problem is related to rendering the stills so they look nice in video.
    Anyone got any ideas?
