Adding iPod songs to library on new computer

Firstly, I am sure that there is a post about this subject... Somewhere on these boards. I spent some time looking and didn't seem to find the info I needed.
Here is my question:
I recently built a new PC since my original is at home in the states. (I am currently deployed to Korea) I would like to add the music files from my iPod into the library on my computer. I bought a CD off the music store and authorized my PC. Just cant seem to get my library off my iPod and onto my PC. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time,

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Transferring songs on Ipod to itunes library on new computer

I recently purchased a new computer and would like my ipod to synch with itunes on my new computer rather than uploading all my music again manually--- extremely time consuming. How do I do this without losing everything that is currently saved on my ipod???

Set your iPod to manual update. Do this on your original PC first then when you connect it to the new one, it won't auto-sync to the new empty library. There's a tutorial here:http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt3.html
If you no longer have your old PC read this before connecting to the new one: "How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93779
If you still have your original PC, you can in fact use your iPod to migrate your current iTunes music folder to your new one: "How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173-en

  • How do I transfer my iPod songs & playlists to a new computer?

    Hi there:
First here's the situation. I've got iTunes 7.71 on my MacBook Pro and I've got a huge music library (approx 256 GB) that I keep on an external firewire drive. (In case it matters, the overwhelming majority of stuff in the library consists of MP3 rips from my CD collection-- very little is from the iTunes store).
I also have a 60 GB color display iPod that I use to listen to tunes when I'm at the gym, on planes, etc. Since my whole iTunes library does NOT fit on that, I don't try to synch my whole library to the iPod, but just a few selected playlists (which I keep in a playlist folder called "iPod playlists"), which total about 50 GB of songs.
OK, got that? Now: here's the challenge:
I just started work at a new job and I would really like to be able to transfer the iPod part of my library to the (Windows) machine I have there... the songs/playlists, etc. (I don't want/need all 256 GB of my library there... and in fact, I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be enough room on the machine for it. Also, I don't want to just plug in my iPod or an iPod dock and play from that, as I really like all the additional sorting functionality that iTunes offers, and frankly, I just know I'd leave my iPod at work half the time and be kicking myself for it at the gym..)
So: How do I do this? I searched around among the support documents and found very detailed instructions on how one can use an iPod to transfer a WHOLE library from one computer to another (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329). But that's not what I want to do here-- and the size of my main library precludes it. I just want to transfer the part of my library that I put on my iPod to my work machine.
There ought to be an easy way to do this, I think-- but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone out there please point me to info on how this can be done? Or just tell me? Thanks!

Although my question has not yet been answered, I have since discovered that I asked on too specific of a forum. I have re-posted it on the general iPod forum and will shortly be marking this thread as answered to avoid confusion.

  • HT1386 Re: syncing iPod to iTunes Library on new computer.

I've just migrated to a new pc (Windows 8), have installed my iTunes Library and the iTunes software. Music plays on my pc. BUT I can't get my iPod to sync. I have tried different USB ports.  It used to sync automatically once I established the connection.  When I push the "sync" button, all I get in the window at the top is the legend "Starting sync" and the horizontal barber pole (static) for a few moments, and then nothing.
Btw, it outrages me that Apple wants to charge $19 (plus tax) for a consultation!

When all of your synced media like apps and music are in the iTunes libary of the new computer backup the iPod to iTunes and restore from that backup

Reason: you can only sync all media with one iTunes libary/computer.

  • Syncing old selection of songs with library on new computer

I have a large library of songs, too large for it all to fit on my iPhone. So I have selected only the really good stuff to sync to my iPhone. My complete library is on a NAS. I recently bought a new iMac to replace an ageing PC and linked iTunes on the iMac to the library on the NAS. The "new" iTunes library on the iMac comes up with all the songs selected/checked. When I try and sync my iPhone with the iMac iTunes it is trying to sync the complete library. This is unsuccessful  because there is not enough space (and never will be) on my iPhone.
Is there a way of applying the selection of songs (the ones I checked to sync to the iPhone) in the old library on the PC to the new library without having to go through the laborious task of manually unchecking all the songs I don't wan't to sync in the new library?
    Thanks.

    It's the same thing.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine. In the case of v6 you copy the Library Folder as a single entity, not the constituent parts
Then launch iPhoto. That's it. The later version of iPhoto will update the Library to the newer format.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    Regards

Is there a way that I can put the songs on my ipod onto itunes on my new computer without loosing them or having to buy them all over again?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your iPod for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

You restore the media to your new computer using the backup you made of your old computer before it died. You did backup your computer, right?

  • How do I sync my Ipod Classic 160gb with my new computer (windows 8). It synced with my old computer (windows XP) but not with my new one (windows8)

How do I sync my Ipod Classic 160gb with my new computer (Windows8).? It synced with my old computer (WindowsXP) but will not do so on the new computer?

    Hi Lechwe,
I had this issue recently, due to changing HD for an SSD.
In my case, since the library in my iPod was synced to the HD it was not syncing to the library in the SSD, though they were the same (had the same contents).
I found there's this checkbox in iTunes > iPod > [Settings] Music, called "Sync Music". Mine was unchecked, I guess due to iPod being synced to the old library. I marked the checkbox and clicked then in Sync. iTunes asked me if I was sure I wanted to sync the iPod with the "new" library, i clicked yes, and the it started determining the song to sync. Since the library was essentially the same (just a couple songs more in the new one), it synced the couple new songs and that was it.
    Hope it helps!
    Regards,
    Awlo.

  • Transfer ITunes Library to New Computer

My old computer has crashed and I can no longer access anything on it including ITunes. I am purchasing a new computer...how can I have all of my songs moved to my new computer so I can access all of my music which I've already purchased.

The policy on music/media purchases is that you only get one download and it's up to you to maintain a backup against loss: iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
The licensing of Purchased applications allows for them be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
If you have an iPod that still has any of your purchases on it you'll find details in this article on how to transfer them to the computer: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Failing this, you could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link it'll take you to the support/contact page, from there click on Music Purchases then the Lost or Missing Items option, from there click on "Email Us": Customer Service - iTunes Store Support

Apparently I wasn't clear.  The music on my ipod is but a subset of all the music on my external hard drives.  I want to import only the songs and playlists from my existing ipod into the itunes library on my new computer, which currently has no music or playlists.  How can I do this?

  • How do I transfer my music and apps from my ipod touch 4g to a new computer?

The hard drive on my old computer failed so I no longer have access to my itunes library that was saved onto that computer. Is there anyway I can transfer my music and apps to my new computer? I would prefer not using one of those shady online tools... I don't want to lose any of my music or apps since I have some paid ones on there. I'm afraid that if I connect it to the new computer then everything will be lost. If that happens the I'll never be able to get any of my music and apps back (or at least it'll be real difficult). Can anyone please please please help me?
How do I transfer my music and apps from my ipod touch 4g to a new computer?

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like discusssed here:
    new PC: Apple Support Communities
    - Try to make a backup of the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Backup
    - Restore the iPod from backup and sync as necessary.

  • Reloading ipod and itunes on a new computer

I am trying to reload ipod and itunes on a new computer I recently bought. Because of disc management issues, I had these on an external drive (assigned the letter "F") on my old system. The letter "F" is assigned to a disc drive on my new computer. Every time I try to load ipod or itunes, the installer sequence tells me there is no available memory on drive F of the new machine (true enough), but will not let me re assign to a new drive.
suggestions on how to resolve this?
    many thanks. Bill

  • How do I move MPEG audio files from my iPod to my library on my computer???

Can someone tell me how to move MPEG audio files from my iPod to my library on my computer? Somehow all my songs on my iPod are MPEGs and they won't transfer to the library. I really don't want to loose the music, and there doesn't appear to be an option to convert the MPEG to a ACC file while the MPEG is on the iPod. Please help....

iTunes/iPod does not provide a way of copying tracks from an iPod to iTunes except for purchased music. But iTunes can play MP3 files without conversion.
Here are some ways of getting files from an iPod to your PC:
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.
