Adding jabber buddies

Adding jabber buddies just does not work all the time. I can even chat with others and they see me on line but I am unable to add them to my list. I tried adding during the chat as well as putting them in my address book and then trying to add with the + button. We use Jabber at work and this is very annoying. Any ideas???

yes. This is a very strange bug I assume. Some buddies can be added without a problem and show up. Some can't at all and will not show up. Some show up with "waiting authorization" and never become active. We use Jabber at work and it seems like randomly buddies can not be added. We did not have this problem with any other client.

  • Can't see some Jabber Buddies

For some reason, i can't see some of the buddies on my Google Talk (Jabber) buddy list. I can see them on their AOL account, but not on their Google Talk account. I've tried re-adding them, and deleting my google talk account and recreating it. They can IM me, and I can IM them back (on Jabber), but I they don't show up on my buddy list no matter how much I re-add them.

    Hi zhoffmanster,
It is more likely then, seeing this is a more detailed post, that it is a Google releated problem.
It is probably their link to other Jabber servers.

  • Adding Multiple Buddies at Once

iChat and Address Book work seamless together, but the one thing that I cannot stand is the fact that when you add a person to your iChat buddy list from your address book, you can only add ONE contact at a time. Once you click on the name from the list and click "Add" you then have to go down to the "+" sign and scroll down the list of contacts again to find the next person... rinse, lather, repeat. This is VERY obnoxious.
Is there any way to select more than one contact at a time and hit "Add" to speed up the process? I've tried all the normal ways of selecting more than one item... holding down CMD key or the shift key... nothing works. Anyone else found a way around this?

    Hi,
AIM actually stores your Buddy List on their Servers.
iChat offers the ability to Add "Real Names" which then allows it to be put in the Address Book as well.
I do not believe screen names only are stored on your Mac.

  • Buddies show as offline

My buddies showing as offline when they are actually online and their status is available. their computers in iChat show that I am also offline. what are we doing wrong?

    Hi,
There are several possibles on this.
    1) In iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security tab (For AIM based logins) you can set who can "See" you.
If you have Allow Buddy List Only or Allow Specific people other people will not see you as On-line. As a Consequence of this you will not see them as On line either.
    2) Is the reverse of this. Your Buddy either has not added you to their Buddy List and has the same settings or you have not added them.
    3) Any form of Mispelling.
    This includes Typos...
... but mainly about Adding @Mac.com Buddies as MobileMe (@me.com Buddies) This is less common in iChat 5 as you have to type the name in Full. In iChat 4 and Earlier you had to Chose the "Type" of Buddy that they are.
AIM Buddies (Those registered with AIM directly) rarely need anything after an @ symbol although it is possible to register an Email Address as a Scree Name.
    4) Adding Jabber Buddies to An AIM based List or AIM based names to a Jabber list.
As most Jabber IDS look like email Addresses and the AIM servers allow @mac.com and @me.com as well as other emails it is easy to enter a name (The AIM servers never tell you whether the Name is valid or not as long as it is in the correct format)
As the Jabber servers are non centralised they have no way of knowing if [email protected] is based on a Jabber Server call Mac.com.
    5) Sometimes at heavy usage periods the Login servers at AIM are out of Sync an you may not see all your Buddies as On Line.
Hope this helps tracking things down.

  • Messages and Aim account

My aim screen name will not connect in messages. It tells me it can't connect because my username is wrong or because the server is not working, but both my internet is operating and i know my username is correct. Everytime I try to click available is says connecting and then it goes back to disconnected.

    Hi,
iChat can use names that work with AIM and it can use names that work with Jabber servers (Google is a Jabber server).
What cannot be done is adding Jabber Buddies to an AIM Buddy list or AIM Buddies to a Jabber List.
You either need a Google Name (And to Enable the Talk option which allows access to the GoogleTalk server)
or he needs to get a Name valid with AIM.
NOTE he can in fact register his Gmail ID as an AIM name (AIM allow you to use an existing Email as the ID) but this can make things confusing.
He can also use the Gmail Email as the Alternative email just for password recovery/security whilst creating a new name.

  • Losing Buddies that I've Added

I'm in the process of updating my Address Book. Because there are so many changes, I decided to start from scrath with my iChat buddy list, so I deleted everything and am re-adding them from AB as I go. I added 82 buddies yesterday. Today, when I re-opened iChat, there were only 8 listed. I re-added the missing buddies, closed iChat, and re-opened it. Same thing - only 8 on the list. Am I missing something? Why aren't the buddies staying on my list?
    Thanks.

    Hi Np3,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
OK You deleted everyone from your Buddy list ?
Whilst you were logged on to AIM ?
Added Buddies should appear in the Buddy list if the following are met.
    1) You added them as the 'right' type of account.
    2) You spelt their name right (Screen name)
    3) You are not blocking anyone (see iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security tab)
    4) They are not blocking you.
    5) Show Off line Buddies is selected in the iChat > View menu.
    6) They are not using a client that can do Invisible.
The ones 3- 6 will appear greyed out if Off Line Buddies is selected and 1) and 2) are correct. Wrong account types and misspells will also appear as if they are Off Line Buddies.
To see the Buddies in the Address Book they have to have something entered in the "Real Name" text fields.
These details can be added at the time you add the new Buddy or by clicking once on the Buddy and then using Apple Key and i Together, (Get Info) and adding the Real Names in the Address Card Drop down.
The "Real Name" can of course be a Nickname or even part of their Screen Name (Anything really) to add it to the Address Book.
Their is an upper limit of about 200 names that can be in your Buddy list (Address Book or Not)
You tend to get an error (feedbag and a number) if this happens.
There can be confusion if you use something like AIM for Mac or another AIM client app and have the Buddy list there.
Are you getting an error message ?
    Hope this helps.

  • We are rolling out MACS to all of our office !   How do I load everyone into iChat without adding each person individually ?

We are using Google mail.  How can I pre-load everyone's buddies in iChat without adding in one-by-one ?

    HI,
Depending if you are using a Disk Image to keep all Macs at the same OS X level then you can have a "global Address Book".
Realistically it is really about each end user adding the Buddies (via their Screen name or Jabber ID - your sounds like it will be Jabber IDs as it is Google).
You will also have to Enable Talk on all th Google Mail Accounts. (it is in the Google Settings no the Mail Web page settings)

  • Lion Issue - Buddies not in Buddy List

I can see my Buddies in the menu bar drop down but not in my buddy list. Any ideas?

    Hi,
If you have several Buddy Lists that Login to AIM then the Menu Bar iCon drop down will show all those that are On line.
There may be some that are Not in a Buddy List when you view it.
It does similar thing with multi-Jabber Buddy lists
The Drop down will show All  but lets say you have  Google List, that will only show you  your Google Buddies (Buddies added to the Google List)
Of course the other thing is that the Drop Down can display Jabber Buddies whilst you look at a AIM (Login) Buddy list or vice versa)

  • Ichat buddies

Hi all. I've had my mac for a few years and a friend of mine has recently bought a new mac and asked whether we could chat on ichat. I set it up last night with my mobile me account, however i can not seem to add him to my buddy list. I've tried to add in the AIM buddy list window and using buddies> add buddy and nothing happens. He says that he has added me. I don't know whether this is relevant but also seem to have acquired two apple ID. One that i set up originally and one that seems to have been set up accidently when i was setting up ichat and is related to the mobile me account. Can anyone lead me through this? Ta

    Hi,
iChat if you have an AIM, @Mac.com or @me.com ID will login into the AIM Servers (login.oscar.aol.com)
So as long as you and your Buddy have a AIM based name it will work.
iChat can also Login to Jabber Servers.
This includes GoogleTalk (If you allow Talk in your account settings at Google).
Most public Jabber Servers are interconnected so that you can chat with Buddies on other Jabber servers. (Jabber to Jabber or Googletalk and vice versa)
You cannot Chat Jabber to AIM Buddies or AIM to Jabber Buddies (In this Line AIM means any ID that Logs into AIM)
There can be several reasons why someone appears Offline.
    1) they are Off Line
    2) they have set themselves to Invisible
    3) You have their Buddy Screen Name wrong in some way (Misspelt or added as the "Wrong" type.
    4) You or they are Blocking or not allowing each other
    Re 4)
If you misspell a name the server does not check if it is a Valid name
If they do not add you to the Buddy List and use Allow Buddy List only then you will not see them as On line (sort of Like Invisible)
    raplhjohnsr
    [email protected] and
[email protected] are in fact three separate Buddies as far as the AIM Servers are conerned
    I sometimes regard 3) as a) and b) options a = misspellings b = wrong type.
    5) Is the Buddy doing 3) and 4) together. (they add you but either misspell or add you as AIM when it should be @mac.com for example - the the 4) bit does not allow you to see them as On-line)
If they can see you as On line then they should start a Text Chat
When you get this and open it, go to the Buddies Menu and use the Add option; which will list their Screen name. (delete any misspelt or other mistake from their Address Book entry as well as iChat)

  • Trouble connecting ichat with jabber

Having trouble using Jabber software in Ichat. Cant seem to connect to my clients or my gmail account. I am on 10.5.8 I use Verizon to connect to the net.
Im works and Bonjour works. But nothing with Jabber.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    You did this ?
    Opened iChat
Went to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and used the Plus button.
In here you chose Google in the drop down at the top item ?
You added your Google ID exactly as it appears when you login to the Web Mail page ?  (it makes a difference between @gmail.com and @googlemail.com)
You have enable Talk on your Google Account ?
If you check now, the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Server settings tab for the Google account lists talk.google.com as the server and is using SSL and therefore port 5223 ?
You have added Google Buddies with the "right suffix" to their IDs in the list ?

  • Empty or incomplete  Jabber List

    Using OSX.5.4 Server
Even for a experienced Mac user Leopard Server has some misteries....
    1. recently added user on the server do have only an empty buddy list in their Jabber List of their iChat, They do not see neither online nor offline users
    2. Existing users do not have listed the entries of the new users in their list. They also don't see new users when they are online
I guess there must be a database where these enries are administrated
What needs to be done to get these 2 points fixed?

    Tim Harris wrote:
When you delete a user from the server it does not delete their account in the iChat server, you have to do that manually.
I appreciate very much your help and inputs.
The above mentionned remark does not underline the user friendlyness of Apple Software for me..;))
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.jabber.jabberd.plist
    sudo /usr/bin/jabber_autobuddy -m
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.jabber.jabberd.plist
    Do I interprete correctly:
first line: stops the jabber task
    second: recreates the buddy list
    third: restarts jabber server
This still does not explain why, say [email protected] cannot see
[email protected] You have a couple of options here.
May be you have overlooked: isabellefrance is one of the deleted, but still listed accounts.
Option two: this involves cleaning out the jabberd2.db and having the system make a new one.
This is OK of all the users and buddies are 'local' and you have not added jabber users on other
networks. Have everyone close the iChat clients.
The user are on three different locations, connected over the internet, behind routers. The server is in my office . We use public IPs but i guess this cannot be used to see the user of the other offices as local. Correct?
Option three: this involves manually adding them as buddies via ichat clients or using the jabber_autobuddy command set.
My goal is that everone gets a correct, updated buddy list when there was a change. If I need to do some manual work on the server its not so cumbersome (however not applelike....) because we do not have so many changes.
    I need:
    - The server, may be with my manual inputs, creates a new buddy list after edits
    - All users get it automatically next time they log in
If I understand correctly option one should do what I need in my situation (by using "sudo /usr/bin/jabber_autobuddy -d JID" first).
    Correct?
    Thanks again

  • Jabber and Google Talk Issues

I use a Google Talk account, and I was delighted to see that iChat was compatible with it. However, one day it stopped working and I saw my account was deleted. I went to re-create it and Jabber and Google Talk are no longer choices I can choose from. I can see them, but I can't actually select them. Any help would be great, because a lot of my friends are Google Talkers.

Have you Enable Parental Controls on this Mac User Account ?
Have you set Parental Controls on another User Account and set iChat up with the same ID ?
(Have you used the same ID/Screen Name on another computer that has Parental Controls ?)
If you have and you have not allowed the Jabber Buddies to be listed or have not set the iChat part up in the first place you will have issues as Jabber (and therefore Googletalk) and Bonjour can be Blocked.
This more effects Leopard than it does Snow Leopard but that was why I hinted at other computers because it blocks the Buddies by Flagging them on the Server (this does not explain why you cannot access the choice in the current iChat)

  • Need to move iChat buddies from 10.5 server to 10.6 server

How can I export/import buddies from a Leopard server to a Snow Leopard server? We are moving our iChat service off a server that is scheduled to retire and I'd like our users to not go through the pain of re-adding their buddies again.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
10.5 Server and specifically iChat Server has it's own forum
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1235 (for Export)
10.6 Server has Forum called Collaboration Services for iChat Server (And a few other bits)
    The Forums are within Categories.
Technically each is within it's own OS Category but Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard are all shown in this "Master Category" here
The reason I am posting these links is that I don't know enough about the Server version of iChat.
The chances are that someone in the 10.6 Server > Collaboration Services forum knows how to Export the list from 10.5 Server and input it in to 10.6 Server.
    Hope this helps.

  • Available buddies not showing up?

    Hi,
Last night I updated my software and ever since, my available buddies aren't showing up on iChat. I use Jabber and prior to the upgrade it was working just fine so I'm not sure if it's related. Any suggestions on fixing this?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I take it you mean you updated to OS 10.6.5 ?
There was no update to iChat 5 in this Update (the last one was in 10.6.3)
I also take it you have Quit iChat and restarted it if you keep it on all the time ?
Have you restarted the computer a second time (at least) since the Update ?
Are the Jabber Buddies a mixture of people using different Jabber servers including GoogleTalk Buddies ?
If all the Buddies are using one Server then that particular Server may be the issue.

  • Is it possible to sync PDFs with multiple computers using the same apple ID?

I have successfully synced these PDFs with one computer (iMac) and one iOS device (iPhone).
However, I can't figure out how to sync the PDFs with the second computer (Macbook Pro).
I added the PDFs to iTunes by dragging them into the books tab. I then set the iOS device to sync books via iBooks.
Does iTunes only sync books purchased from the iTunes store?
I am using iTunes v11.1 on both computers.

If you have tow computers that wish to talk to each other then no matter what Buddy List you use you will need two accounts.
If this is a List that logs into the AIM servers it can be an old @mac.com name, the newer MobileMe name or an AIM name.
With a Jabber List it can be a Jabber ID or GoogleTalk ID
In a straight forward set up Jabber Lists (Jabber ID) can not talk to AIM Buddies or An AIM Buddy List (Screen Name) talk to Jabber Buddies
