Adding jpegs to Lightroom

I am new to lightroom and I'm trying to add old jpeg photos, is this possible? it also won't add some very recent photos that i didn;t shot in raw.

Certainly it is possible.
Open the Import Dialog. On the left side is the source panel. In the source panel navigate to the folder that contains your JPGs and import them.
You have a choice of either leaving them on the hard drive where they currently are - then select <Add> in the top center of the Import Dialog -, or move them to a new location - then select <Move> and specify a destination folder in  the Destination Panel on the right side of the Import Dialog. I would not recommend <Copy> in this case since it would create duplicates unnecessarily. <Copy> is for importing from camera.
To see the Source panel and the Destination panel the Import Dialog has to be expanded, i.e. it is then as large as your screen.
If it is smaller click on the small triangle in the bottom left corner an it will expand. See screen shot.

  • Exporting Jpegs from Lightroom - DPI question

When I export Jpegs from Lightroom, I set the dpi to 300 pixels per inch. I do not specify a max width or height. When I view these files in Adobe Bridge (CS2 or CS3) the file info says 300dpi. However, when I open the files in Photoshop and select image size, It says 72dpi and has the document size set to very large. I realize that I can enter 300 dpi and uncheck the resample box, I am just confused as to why this is happening.
My concern is, that I upload my images directly to my lab after exporting from Lightroom. Will this cause problems?
    Thanks in advance!
    David

the image resolution is a combination of the two parameters you mention: size and dpi. a very large size at 72 dpi is equivalent to a small size (like 3x5) at very high dpi. for printing you want at least 240 dpi at the largest size that allows you to keep that resolution. for screen presentations or your web site you want jut 72 dpi. 72 dpi and 2x3 inches will require a very small file size.
I suggest you to export images at TIFF and not JPEG as that will allow you to preserve the image quality when doing editing in PS.
In my case I export TIFF for PS (when I need PS editing) and 72 dpi JPEG for my web site (that way if somebody downloads my image illegally thy get a poor resolution copy). But since LR works very well for me 90% of the images re just kept in raw mode and I print from LR.

  • Hello! Why are there staircase-shaped artefacts with jpegs in Lightroom (invisible in other programmes)?

Hello! Why are there ugly staircase-shaped artefacts with jpegs in Lightroom? They're mostly on edges of red subjects and I can't find them in other programmes or software...

If you have the photos on your camera cards, then obviously you can simply copy them to the appropriate locations.
There are Lightroom plug-ins that can retrieve the preview that Lightroom uses, but these will be smaller and lower in quality than the original. Maybe one of our plug-in experts can suggest the proper plug-in.
If the hard disk is really going bad, as I speculated, you would definitely want to get it replaced. If that is the case, you don't want to keep using it. You might want to run some disk diagnostics on it.

  • When adding a watermark, Lightroom crashes

Anytime I try to export a file and add a watermark, Lightroom crashes.  I can export without adding a watermark just fine.  Lightroom also crashes when I try to edit a current watermark - as soon as I click the drop down menu to choose which watermark to edit, down goes Lightroom.  I have both text watermarks and a small jpeg as a watermark (same thing happens with both) and I am running Lightroom 4.3.

It does sleep eventually, but not while I'm using the watermark feature? And it's not like I move the file around, it stays put. At any rate, I've moved it over to my internal hard drive to test that theory and it seems to be working thus far
As a side note, I'm wondering if it's ok that my raw files are on my internal hard drive but the catalog is on my external? When I import new images, they go to my "Pictures" folder by default but the catalog itself is located on my external. So when I back it up, it backs up to my external, which is the whole point...but since I wasn't sure if you're supposed to be referencing the files from the same place and THEN backing them up somewhere separate? Sorry if that's confusing!

  • How do I hide metadata of Jpeg in lightroom?

Hi I want to hide the fact that jpeg was worked on Lightroom. PS has an option of choosing NONE for metadata. How do I do it in Lightroom? Thanks in advance

Export a copy, and choose the appropriate metadata options in the export dialog.

  • Adding timecode in Lightroom 4

I shoot both Nikon DSLR and Sony NX5U video and need to display timecode so client can suggest edit points prior to final output. Can this be done in Lightroom? My alternative is to use FCP X which I have.

It all comes down to viewing distance and usage. I've had great looking 16" x 24" prints made at Costco from my Canon 300D 6.2 mp camera (2048 x 3072) with the kit lens, which are about 128 dpi. If these are to be hung on a wall in your house I doubt anyone is going to notice the difference. If they are to be used for museum exhibition purposes, then as Keith Reeder stated it depends on the subject.
Nikon D80 3,872 x 2,592 without cropping equals ~129 dpi @ 20" x 30", which is about equal to my 300D at 16" x 20". IMHO–If you're using NEF raw files and doing a good job of using LR4.1's processing tools, that will go a long way toward improving the enlargement quality than simply having more megapixels.

Thank you for responding so quickly.   These will be developed at a print lab, so I'm not sure what type of printer.  The prints are listed as premium digital luster/glossy.  Most of my photos are in the 3800x2500 range (Nikon D80 10.2 mp).  I'm very new to Lightroom and found an area under the "print" tab for print resolution & document size, but it looked limited to 8x10".  Is this beacuse it it connected to my home printer.  Am I even in the right section?
Most print labs require sRGB profile jpeg files. After you have completed processing the image in LR's Develop module go to File> Export and select JPEG and sRGB under 'File Settings.' Make sure 'Resize to Fit' is NOT checked, since you want the largest file size. I would use Use Gloss Standard or High 'Output Sharpening' as a good starting point for glossy paper.

  • Problem adding jpegs to iWeb pages

When I add a group of jpegs (typically numbered 01, 02, 03...10, 11, 12, etc), the group will be added in numerical order, with the exception of 01, which is always added to the end of the group. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Apparently no-one has this problem.

  • Adding Music to Lightroom Flash Gallery

I would like to be able to add music.fla or music.swf files created in flash 8 to a published Lightroom Flash Gallery. Upon examination of the of the gallery.swf and the Index.html files I don't see where I can insert or embed the music files. Has anyone explored this possibility?
    George

Don't know if this helps you at all. It's not LR of course.....
In CS2 Adobe added two Flash-based templates you can use for your online Web Photo Gallery. Even cooler is the fact that you can now add a background music track to one of these Flash galleries. Just follow these steps: First find the MP3 audio track you want to use as your background music and rename the file as "useraudio.mp3". Then open your Photoshop CS2 application folder and navigate to Presets>Web Photo Gallery. Inside that folder look for either Flash Gallery 1 or Flash Gallery 2. Depending on which gallery you chose within Photoshop, drag-and-drop your audio file into the corresponding folder. That's it! You've got background music.

  • Sending hi res (300 dpi) jpegs from Lightroom 4

I am taking a course on making Christmas decorations.  Have been asked to send my images @ 3" x 3", 300 dpi, medium jpeg.  We have spent 2 days back and forth with this and I have not been able to complete the Export panel correctly.  Can anyone help.  Thanks.

I had cropped my image to 3 x 3 first.
Unless you want square pictures, crop to whatever dimensions are most pleasing, e.g. 4000x3000 (i.e. as big as possible preserving the portion of image you want), cropped dimension bears no relationship to print resolution (which is what the dpi value is referring to, or should be).
If you truly want square pictures, then crop to 4000x4000 or 3000x3000 or 2000x2000 etc. in other words: crop determines aspect ratio (overall retangular shape: square, wide, tall, ...).
Now that you've got them cropped correctly (or maybe they didn't need to be cropped at all - do you really want exactly square pictures?), you need to export them how she wants them, which, assuming she's using the correct terminology (or should I say terminology consistent with Lightroom's export dialog box), then export them at 900 pixels per side, max, and set (print) resolution to 300 pixels per inch.
    That should do it.
If that doesn't do it, then you need to get more specific instructions from her.
    Example settings:
Note: (print) Resolution merely sets a metadata item in the file, it (otherwise) has no effect whatsoever on exported image.
    WallStShari wrote:
She said it only came to her at 240 pixels square.
An image exported with the above settings will come to her at 900 pixels on a side (square if cropped square, or rectangular with 900 pixels on long edge, if not cropped square). Just make sure you've not cropped it down to fewer pixels than 900 on a side, or you'll be losing quality, since it'll have to be enlarged to meet requirements. Greater than 900 pixels per side is OK, since Lr can shrink files without such quality loss.
Regarding Jpeg quality: 90 is very high, 80 is high, 60-70 is medium, 50 or below is (relatively) "low" - roughly and subject to opinion.

  • RAW images appearing as JPEG in Lightroom

    Hi there,
I have recently installed the latest version of Lightroom on my Apple iMac, when I import RAW files (NEF) from my hard drive (they are in iphoto) into LR they show up in LR as jpegs rather then NEF files. Is there something I am not doing correctly? I did not encounter this problem when I used to use LR with  RAW files with Windows Vista on my laptop, they appeared in Lightroom as NEF files not jpegs.
    Thanks for your help

This is the Camera Raw Forum...the Lightroom Forum is down the hall. You would be better off asking there.

  • Viewing PSD's and Jpegs in Lightroom

When I open Lightroom and use the Loupe toview the files in a directory, it does not show anything other than NEF files. Why ?
I currently use Bridge and ACR to edit and process my files, but want to move across to using Lightroom, but I cant see half of my older files.
Can anyone help me out here please?
    Thx. Graham

If you open a file in PS from Bridge, explorer, finder or any other browser, LR has no way of knowing about the existence of the file until you import it into LR's catalog.
If you open a file in PS, Silver efex or any other external editor from LR then the newly created file is automatically imported in the LR database (the catalog).
File browsers such as Bridge, windows explorer or osx finder use the OS's folder structure. LR doesn't. LR is a database. For a file to be seen by LR it has to be imported into that database.
You would be much better either, using LR to manage files, including opening in PS etc., or using Bridge and the SilverEfex plug in for PS rather than the LR plug in. Using both in the way you describe is adding unnecessary steps to your work flow.
By the way, Silver Efex pro should work directly from LR or as a plug in from PS. When used as a plug in in PS you have the advantage of applying the effects as layers.

  • Fuji raw plus jpeg in Lightroom 5

This is probably a stupid question with a really easy answer but I’m shooting Raw plus Jpeg on my Fuji XPro-1 and processing through LightRoom 5. Most of the time the jpeg gives me everything I need but occasionally I need the latitude of a raw file, hence the jpeg/raw. I thought that LightRoom would show me both and give me the choice, but when I go to import only the RAW files show up. Is it possible to access either the jpeg or raw when importing?
    Fuji jpeg/raw with L

In the Lightroom preferences there is an option to treat JPEG images next to raw files as separate images. After you check that option (i.e. make it active) then Lightroom will import both the JPEG and the raw images and they will be next to each other.

  • HELP!  How do I export large jpegs in lightroom 5?

I've always shot jpegs with my camera and edited them in Lightroom.  The last set up photos I took, I decided to shoot in RAW.  I uploaded them to Lightroom 5 and after editing them, exported them to my computer as jpeg files.  100% quality and didn't limit the file size.  They all saved to my computer around 4.5mb.  When I used to edit my large jpegs and export them, they would be around 7mb.  I'm so confused!  Why would these be smaller since the RAW files to begin with are larger?
Is there something I'm missing?  Lets say I want to export all my RAW photos to my computer as jpegs, but want them to be 10mb in size?  Is this possible?

    nfulton wrote:
Do you know why the RAW would save as a 4.0mb jpeg, but if I don't shoot raw and only jpeg (and edit the same in LR), it will save it up to 10 or sometimes larger?  Just curious why this would be.
My advice remains to IGNORE (as in don't pay attention to) the file size of exported JPGs. Any attempt to understand and find meaning in JPG file sizes will drive you to frustration, and is an exercise in chasing your tail. There are too many factors that you cannot control and cannot quantify that go into determining JPG file sizes.
And if that is the case (you don't get more pixels), then why bother shooting RAW?
Because each pixel of a RAW photo contains more information (up to 16 bits ... but most cameras use 12 or 14 bits) than the corresponding pixel of a JPG (8 bits only). With more information in the RAW photo, you can produce more pleasing photos when you edit them.

  • RAW photos importing as JPEGS to Lightroom

I am shooting RAW with a Nikon D300s and importing into LR2 via iphoto on a mac.  My photos are importing as NEF into iphoto but come into LR as JPEGS.  If I copy the photos out of iphoto as NEF into a file and try to import them to LR, I get an error message that they are unsupported.  Help?!?!?

That is iPhoto's fault. You are not actually importing the raws but the jpeg previews that iPhoto generates as a place holder. iPhoto hides the raw files from you and therefore Lightroom. If you insist on using iPhoto as the image importer, right (or control if you haven't set up the secondary mouse button) click on one of the images in iPhoto and select "Show Original File". Drag those files onto Lightroom to import them from the hidden location it will now disclose to you. If you want to keep the files in iPhoto, you probably should use "Add" or "Copy" instead of "Move".
In the end, you will be better off just completely ignoring iPhoto.

  • Adding jpegs to final cut express

         Hi,
I'm not sure what easy setup I should use for my jpegs. The jpeg frame size is 3456 x 2592. My video easy setup is 1440 x 1080 HD/Apple Intermediate Codec/ 29.97 fps. The jpegs are not filling up the canvas. Thank you very much!

If you have a lot of identical sized pictures and you don't mind losing a bit from the top and bottom you can speed up the process like this:-
    1. Drag all the jpegs to the timeline.
    2. Select the first and adjust it in the Motion tab.
    3. Click cmd v to copy it.
    4. Deselect it and select all the others.
    5. Press Option v to open the Paste Attributes window.
    6. Select Basic Motion and press OK.
All the images will now be the same size and shape.
