Adding KDE desktop to console based Solaris 11

Im new to solaris, previously i hav used Linux preloaded with KDE or Gnome. I m using solaris 11 x86 on my Win7 ultimate with VMware Workstation. I used text installer to install on virtual disk and now this black screen makes me feel sick and tired.
I want to install kde desktop GUI on this but i couldnt find packages for kde
somebody help me with package and installing commands(new to CLI)

If you want to install a desktop by default, I'd suggest downloading the live CD and installing from it as it'll give you exactly the solaris-desktop package set, and do so more quickly than the two-step process you've gone through in this case.
Running your own repository can be useful if you're going to deploy a lot of Solaris instances.

  • XBMC/mplayer and KDE Desktop effects

    Hi,
i have setup a arch based HTPC with XBMC on top of KDE, but there is one thing i were not able to resolve: The XBMC GUI and playing a video on it gets laggy as soon as i DISABLE the kde desktop effects. My system is i3/sandy bridge based with integrated intel graphics, vaapi installed.
    1. tried different playback settings within XBMC, same results
    2. as soon as i disable the kde desktop effects, xbmc becomes slow and laggy, even if i dont restart it, if i enable desktop effects its smooth again
    3. mplayer reacts the same way when used with -vo gl or -vo gl2, so it could be somehow opengl related. With -vo xv it runs smooth in both configurations.
    4. Cpu load is constantly <20%
    5. tried as root user, same results
    6. glxinfo reports direct rendering is enabled
so any ideas how to resolve that problem? or how to find out whats going on?
you may ask why i want to disable desktop effects, well with desktop effects on, videos run almost perfect, but sometimes there are smaller lags that, i guess, can be related to the desktop effects eating resources, so i want to try without them.
here is the custom part of my xorg config, tearfree was needet to get a vsync-enabled video playback:
    #20-intel.conf
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
    #Option "AccelMethod" "xaa"
    EndSection
    Section "dri"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection

  • Cisco Desktop Monitoring Console

    Hi,
We have installed CAD Services on 2 PGs.
We have  configured Cisco SNMP Service to send SNMP events to CUOM (Cisco Unified  Operations Manager).
CUOM monitors ICM services but not CAD  Services, so we need to use Cisco Desktop Monitoring Console.
Cisco  Desktop Monitoring Console is based on Windows SNMP Service, but this  service is disabled and can not be running at the same time with Cisco  SNMP Service.
Is there a solution to be able to use both Cisco and  Windows SNMP Services to monitor ICM process by CUOM and CAD Services  using Cisco Desktop Monitoring Console?
Thanks in advance for your  help.

    Hi,
how did you resolve this? I was only able to get the CAD monitoring Console running, but I needed to disable Cisco SNMP and enabled Windows SNMP. After that the Console is working.
Is there any impact using Windows SNMP instead of using Cisco SNMP.
I would like to not bother Cisco TAC with that, if anyone has successfully runninbg the console with Cisco SNMP service.
    Thanks in advance

  • When reverting to purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro point product, after uninstalling Creative Cloud Desktop (and CC-based Acrobat XI Pro), how do I eliminate request to renew my subscription?

Creative Cloud just wasn't working for me, so after several years of frustration with being abroad and not online when the program decided to require online verification, I'm ditching Creative Cloud and reverting to the purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro point product. However, after uninstalling Creative Cloud Desktop (and CC-based Acrobat XI Pro), it still wants to go online and check my CC subscription, disallowing use of the newly installed point product version from a several year-old ESD file (and the more recent AcrobatUpd11010.dmg file).
Anyone have an idea of how to eliminate request to renew my subscription?
If, as a journalist, I've have these issues over the past two years, including this final insult when I'm trying to get away from CC, it can't be a one-off problem. So I'd like to hear details about others who've had a similar issue with reverting from CC back to a point product or to CS.
    Thanks,

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
For more information about this security protection see the
"Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:

  • CAD - Desktop Monitoring Console

    Hi All,
We are tried to monitor the CAD server using "CAD Desktop Monitoring Console" .
We configured the snmp community "public" & restart the snmp service as mentioned in the CAD installation guide.
I am getting the snmp timeout error while accessing the console. Please help on this.
    Thanks in Advance !!!

I also had a look at installation guide for CAD 8.5,
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/cad_enterprise/cadenterprise8_5/installation/guide/cad85cceig.pdf
if you look at page 139, it says how to configure Desktop Monitoring Console and only covers windows SNMP.
but if you take a look at guide for CAD 10.0
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/cad_enterprise/cadenterprise10_0/installation/guide/cad100cceig.pdf
page 148 shows how to configure Desktop monitoring console, and there they have separately mentioned Cisco SNMP configuration.
so lets try to make it work with cisco SNMP. please follow this steps and see if it works.
    1) on the both side of CAD server, got to Run and type mmc.exe if you are using 64 bit OS, you have to run mmc.exe /32
a console will pop up with console root
    2) go to file --> add/remove snap-in
3)in the snap in click on ADD button and from list of snap ins add Cisco SNMP Agent Management.
once you add successfully, click ok and
now in your console root, you will be able to see Cisco SNMP managemnet agent.
    4) explore agent by clicking + sign and under community names right click and go to properties
    5) click add new community , under community name give public (case sensitive all small) and select SNMP version as v2c and access rights as read only.
    6) go to CAD postinstall.exe and under SNMP configuration, add at least one trap destination.
    7) restart Cisco SNMP management service.
open your browser and check if console is working or not. and rate post if helps.

  • KDE desktop does not come up after log out

I have updated KDE to the lastest version using the Arch packages.  It worked wonderfully the first time, all of my widgits were intact and my desktop was just as I had left it, custom background and everything. Then, however, I logged out to make sure Fluxbox worked.  Now, even after rebooting, the KDE desktop doesn't come up.  It will bring up Pidgin which was running before but the taskbar and all of the widgets are gone and it has this grey background that is the same as the one in the KDM.
No errors are produced, although it does now ask for the password for a Wallet that "Plasma Desktop" wants to access.  I recognise the name of the wallet (kdewallet) and input the password correctly after this, two notifications pop up with informational thing.  One is about some indexing service being "rebuilt" for new features and the other is saying that it's falling back on a different sound output.  None of this seems to have an impact on the limited usability I have.
Has anyone else expereinced this?  Are there any log files where errors would be outputted to?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I have found the relevent messages.  They are at a pastebin. http://pastebin.ca/1522805
I'm not entirely sure what is going on here.
After the top line of that post, there are a LOT of errors related to "No block with decorrelation terms" in fact the vast majority of that file are those things.  All other "errors" are warnings related to my Fluxbox session which is working fine.
Lines 1, 11 and 12 seem to be the most severe errors:
[0xa2412b0] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
"/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
    "/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
I have no idea where to even begin fixing them. However it is Nepomuk that comes up with the rebuilding message i mentioned in my previous post.

  • I want some KDE apps, but not the KDE desktop environment....

I'm on a laptop running Arch (yay!) and I am wanting to install Amarok and KTorrent. However, I don't want the KDE desktop environment, KWin (I use fluxbox), or things like KDM (I use SLiM). Is there a package, like kde-base in Debian, that allows just essential Qt/KDE libraries for applications like Amarok and KTorrent?
    Thanks in advance.

    Assuming you have it installed,
    $ kcontrol

    $ kcmshell style

  • WebStart with console based applications

    Hi:
I've been struggling all day to get WebStart to work with a console based application (i.e., an application with no user interface that's launched from a shell window). When I launch the application with WebStart, the shell window is not visible. I've tried turning on the advanced option to show the console window, but only System.out and System.err go to there -- you cannot enter user input. Is there a way to run a console based application for a console based application? Thanks.

You may have to use some dialog boxes to get your input.

  • Removing Akonadi (aka, leaving a clean KDE desktop)

I don't use KMail, KOrganizer, file/folder puntuation/comments nor anything that would require Akonadi, or any kind of storage system, so I'm just wasting X mb of my RAM in something that I'm just not using, and that I don't want running on my system.
Is there any way to remove Akonadi?
I tried -R akonadi, but it depends on kdepimlibs, and those depend on kdebase-workspace, so basically I can't remove a simple thing like Akonadi without removing my entire KDE desktop.

Something like this http://trojita.flaska.net/ perhaps? It was mentioned on planet KDE a while back.
Yes, thanks, I've already tried it, and though it seems very promising, it's far too unstable for a productive usage atm. It looks very much like Sylpheed, which I'm currently using, so I would really like to see this develop further to reach a stability minimum (don't get me wrong, I'm a [testing] user, so a few bugs here and there is not an issue, but this one is just a little bit over the edge).

  • KDE Desktop Refresh

    Hi,
I am running KDE version 4.6.5 with Compiz as my windows manager. I am having a reoccurring problem with my KDE desktop.  Fairly frequently half of my desktop stops refreshing and the last window image on that side remains even when the window is moved.  It looks like the entire desktop has been shifted to the right by half a screen so the previous left side of my desktop is now on the right side and behaves normally, and the left side just captures and retains any windows brought onto it.
I'm new to Arch and have found the documentation in the forums and on ArchWiki to be remarkable but I can seem to figure this one out. If anyone out there has any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance!

Depending on what you're trying to do with Compiz you really don't need it with KDE anymore. KWin is included by default and offers a lot of the same effects. You can find the KWin settings by going into System Settings and the Desktop Effects section. I'm not positive that disabling Compiz and using KWin will fix your issues. But it's definitely worth a try.
