Adding keyboard shortcuts for duplicate menu names

I wanted to make a shortcut for the "Use Default" menu item under Format/Fonts/Baseline in Pages. To do that i fired up system preferences and added a new shortcut for Pages and typed in "Use Default" as the name. Unfortunately there is a second menu item called "Use Default" under "Ligature", which gets teh shortcut since it comes first in the menu list.
Is there a way to add a shortcut to a specific submenu subitem, so i can force the shortcut to be for the Use Default under Baseline? This applies not only to Pages but to every application which has duplicate menu names in it.
Thanks,
Chris Niski

I probably shouldn't reply and get your hopes up... but I noticed that the Shortcut setup didn't allow for specifying menu names (hah! even tho the text box is named "Menu Name" not "Menu Item") and wondered if there were apps that had duplicate menu names.
I'm no help at all, unless sympathy helps...

  • Keyboard shortcut for context menu

    Hello all. I recently got a MacBook and it's the first Mac I've ever had. I'm a keyboard shortcut guy when I can be and one thing that's stumped me is using the keyboard to open up the context menu.
    Does anybody know a keyboard shortcut for opening the context menu (ie Ctrl + mouse Click)?
    If there isn't one, I would be happy to add a custom keyboard shortcut for it in the System Preferences. I've tried to do so but I'm doing something wrong because it isn't working. Here's what I've tried specifically:
    1. For "All Applications" add Ctrl+Space for the Menu Title "Show Context Menu"
    2. For "All Applications" add Ctrl+Space for the Menu Title "Open Context Menu"
    Does anybody know the exact Menu Title for the context menu?
    Help is much appreciated!

    The Keyboard Shortcuts are for menu items, not macro creation. What you want to do requires a third-party utility for programming keyboard macros such as iKey, QuickSilver, etc. You'll find these at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Keyboard shortcut for Sub Menu item Only works AFTER using it

    I have a Custom MOVE TO READ Mailbox shortcut. This is a SUB Menu item.. MESSAGE/Move To/READ FOLDER.
    It is really sweet to clear out my INBOX and save emails.
    So, what is ODD is that that menu has to be Clicked on and shown each time MAIL is run for that keyboard shortcut to work.
    I find that Odd and would love to have it work without having to "train" it everyday.

  • In Safari is there a Keyboard shortcut for Merge All Windows?

    Majority of sites sill open new pages in new windows, not new tabs. So, I keep using the Merge All Windows feature all the time. Please, provide a keyboard shortcut for this!

    Although there is no default keyboard shortcut for the menu item in question, there is nothing preventing you from creating your own.
    Under System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, press the "+" sign. From the Application drop-down menu, choose Safari. In the Menu Title field enter "Merge All Windows" -- without the quotes. In the Keyboard Shortcut field, enter your desired key combo and then click the Add button.
    You'll need to quit System Preferences and restart Safari for the change to take effect. Good luck.

  • Keyboard shortcut for adding link in Mail

    How would I add a keyboard shortcut using the "Keyboard" preference pane to add a link in Mail? I use that menu item a lot.
    EDIT: nevermind, I figured it out. For nested items like "Link>Add" you just choose the second command, in this case "Add...". But you have to type Option+semicolon instead of three periods.

    Just looking for the keyboard shortcut for adding keyframes
    There isn't one. You click the Add/Remove Keyframe button in the Effects Controls panel after enabling keyframing with the stopwatch button. You'll find much more here: Adding, navigating, and setting keyframes
    rendering needs to stop itself when it's finished to automatically play the sequence from it's very beginning
    Edit > Preferences > General > uncheck "Play work area after rendering previews"

  • How do I setup a keyboard shortcut for an item in the Services menu?

    In every Application, under the application menu is a "Services" folder. I would like to be able to setup a keyboard shortcut for one of these services (namely Skype).
    I am a heavy user of the "Services > Skype > Call" command and I would love to have a keyboard shortcut for it.
    I went to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, clicked on the plus sign to create a new shortcut (all applications) and entered "Services…Skype…Call" and assigned it to a keyboard command (shift-F1).
    It doesn't work. Any clue as to what I am doing wrong?

    Hi
    Also - have a look at the reply I gave at the link below (sorry - don't know how to insert proper links here).
    May be of interest, maybe not.

    So that it highlights Version Name in the input field in the Metadata Panel?
    I don't know of any that would move to the next photograph and at the same time highlight the Version Name field.
    Command Option m
    will get you to the Management Layout
    Hit w to close the Projects Panel and then hit i to open the Inspectors. From this layout you can use the arrows to manuever through the photographs in the Browser but you will still need to select the Version Name input field to add metadata.
    Should you have a ton of images you can use j k l (up, stop, down) to scroll through them. You can also use a ShuttlePro v.2 and modify the keys on it to make keyboard shortcuts for Aperture.

  • How do I create a keyboard shortcut for a nested finder menu item?

    Specifically I'm trying to create a keyboard shortcut for Finder>Services>Mail>Send File.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    pmasitti,
    Under System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, click on the "+" sign. From the drop-down menu choose Application: Finder, Menu Title: "Send File" (without the quotes), Keyboard Shortcut: whatever.
    Close system System Preferences and quit the Finder for the change to take effect. You can easily quit and relaunch the Finder from the Apple Menu > Force Quit. Select Finder and click on the Relaunch button.
    For the action to complete, select the Finder item before pressing your keyboard short cut.
    Worked for me... good luck!

  • Keyboard shortcut for Control+F2, F, Enter

    Hello,
    I am trying to create a keyboard shortcut that would be available to all Applications deliveres the same result as these keystrokes:
    1. Control + F2 (move focus to menu bar)
    2. F (moves focus to the File menu bar menu)
    3. Enter or down arrow (Displays the File menu)
    WHat I am looking to do is create the Windows equivalent of alt+F (displays the contents of the File menu)
    I have created a System Preferences Keyboard Shortcut for All Applications that has "File" as the description and ^F has the Shortcut...this doesn't work. Is there a way to assign a shortcut to display the menu bar File menu in its open state?

    ReidRik_Von
    Here's one approach to try...
    1) Open System Preferences > Universal Access and make sure "Enable access for assistive devices" is checked.
    2) Highlight and copy the block of code below and paste it into your AppleScript Script Editor (located inside your Applications > AppleScript folder):
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *keystroke tab using command down*
    *set theApp to name of (first process whose frontmost is true)*
    *tell process theApp*
    *click menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    Choose Save As from the Script Editor's File menu, File Format: application, leaving the Options unchecked. Give the script application a name (Display File Menu, e.g.), and press Save.
    3) To assign a keyboard shortcut, you might consider downloading and installing the excellent Spark program.
    From Spark's File menu, set up a New Hot Key to launch an Application, in this case the application being your newly created AppleScript application. When the new System HotKey sheet drops down, hit the Choose button and navigate to the location where your new AppleScript application was saved. Select it and press Open. Click inside the editable Shortcut field to make it active, and on your keyboard keystroke Option (alt), plus the letter "f." Then press Create.
    Start the Spark Daemon by selecting it from the File menu, or by pressing the Stark Spark Daemon button on the Spark panel itself, and then quit Spark altogether. The Spark Daemon and your enabled keyboard shortcut will run as a hidden process, using a minimal amount of RAM.
    It worked for me...
    Good luck!

  • Keyboard shortcut for Compare Documents (or configurable keyboard shortcuts)

    Hi,
    I'm guessing the ability to configure Keyboard Shortcuts as one can in other Adobe applications is coming soon to Acrobat (the software release cycles haven't quite synched up yet), but if there are no plans for this, I would appreciate a Keyboard Shortcut for a function I use very frequently: Compare Documents.
    Thanks much,
    Adam

    If you go to system prefs - keyboard & mouse - keyboard shortcuts you can set a shortcut for anything that is in the mail menus.
    click the + at bottom left to add one, select mail from the applications drop down, then type in the exact name of the mail menu item you want a shortcut for eg :Add Hyperlink . Then find a shortcut combo that isn't in use by something else & there you are.
    I prefer the edit link, so's you get a neat link, rather than the (sometimes) 3 line url.

    we've noticed that mail doesn't send rtf that outlook on an exchange server likes
    unless you not only enable rtf, but also actually make some alteration that really requires rtf. That's to say a different font,a larger font, italics, a signature in italics, a colour etc.
    The fact that your composed message displays in arial 48pt (for example) doesn't cut it - it'll still be sent as plain unless you do one of the above. Making a change & reversing it works too.

  • Keyboard Shortcut for comments

    I have a question and something to share.
    Turns out it's pretty easy to add a keyboard shortcut for
    adding ColdFusion comments (mostly so that you don't have to click
    on the comment dropdown and select the ColdFusion one, that's 2
    clicks). You can add a keyboard shortcut to that Insert Comment
    command. But by default it inserts HTML comments. So if you want it
    to do something different you can modify this file: C:\Program
    Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver
    CS4\configuration\Objects\Text\Comment.js
    The bad news is, I can't find a way to add a shortcut to
    Remove Comment. Does anyone know how to do that?

    Jon
    Not that I know of but you can make your own keyboard shortcuts for anything that is in a menu somewhere:
    +System Preferences > Hardware > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts > Application Keyboard Shortcuts > All Applications > click the little plus sign under the window > Application: > Other > browse to Applications/iWork/Pages > Menu Title > Show Comments (type exactly including U&lc) > hit cmd shift c (or whatever you want)+
    Since the shortcut works on the literal text, it will not toggle on and off. You will have to have another shortcut for +Hide Comments.+

  • Why can't I add keyboard shortcuts for Adobe GoLive 9?

    Since the demise of Unsanity's Menu Master on Leopard, I've been taking the more tedious (and problematic) route of using System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts to add and modify keyboard shortcuts for menu actions.
    I just tried to add my first shortcut to Adobe GoLive 9, which resulted in this uninformative error dialog:
    "You cannot add keyboard shortcuts for the application Adobe GoLive 9."
    Why? (The only real problem I've had with the previous 11 applications is ambiguous menu items, i.e., the same menu action name in more than one menu sub-action.)
    (I'm now resorting to an even more tedious shortcut technique - QuicKeys X3. QuicKeys is great, but it's overkill for a simple keyboard shortcut.)

    I've found another:
    "You cannot add keyboard shortcuts for the application Adobe Reader."

  • Keyboard shortcut for ADD / REMOVE KEYFRAME?

    Mm. Can't seem to find this one in the list under Help menu, and no clue bubble when you just mouse-over either. Maybe I'm just missing it.
    What's the keyboard shortcut for adding / removing a keyframe?

    Unfortunately there is no generic shortcut for this. There are some pre-defined entries in the shortcuts file, but only for select properties like position and scale. They are inert, though, and have no shortcuts assigned to them. A generalized approach would probably work by creating a script based on the menu item ID of "Add Keyframe" and instead assigning that script to one of the 20 reserved shortcuts for script execution. Something like app.executeMenuItem(3434) or so....

  • InDesign Keyboard Shortcut for Submenu Item

    I am attempting to make a keyboard shortcut for a particular menu selection in InDesign CS5. Particularly, I want to select an Adobe PDF Preset
    ("PDF/X-1a:2001") from the submenu. However, when I try select this in Keyboard Shortcuts, all I get is "Define" .. which of couse will bring me to the presets window. I want to be able to select a preset and assign a keyboard shortcut (in this case F15).
    Does anyone have suggestions on how this can be done? I tried various ways, but still can't select anything from that submenu.
    Thanks.

    Hey,
    I agree with Cari! Using SHIFT while clicking on PDF preset name would speed up things! On the other hand, you can use scripting to define which export profile to use and choose destination folder. Great thing about the scripts is that you can assign custom shortcuts to them!
    // Set PDF Preset name
    var myPreset = "[PDF/X-1a:2001]";
    // If not using CS5 or later, set this to: false
    var usingCS5 = true;
    /// --- DO NOT EDIT --- ///
    if(app.documents.length)
        doExport();
    else
        alert("No documents opened");
    function doExport(){
        try{app.pdfExportPresets.item(myPreset).name}
        catch(_){
            alert("PDF Preset not found!\nPlease check name and try again!");
            exit();
        var myFile = (function(){
            var setFile = File.saveDialog ("PDF export based on " + myPreset + " ...", "PDF:*.pdf");
            if(setFile != null)
                return setFile;
            else
                return false;
        if(myFile != false){
            if(Boolean(usingCS5))
                app.activeDocument.asynchronousExportFile (ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
            else
                app.activeDocument.exportFile (ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
    All you have to set is PDF preset name and you are good to go! Also, you can save this script with different names containing different presets name and assign different shortcuts to every one of them.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is there (or can I create) a keyboard shortcut for the command "export"?

    is there (or can I create) a keyboard shortcut for the command "export"?

    Keyboard Shortcuts are created in the System Preferences app, Hardware section, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts tab.
    Select Application Shortcuts on the left.
    Click the "+" sign on the right and in the dialog box that pops up, enter: "Export..." and your preferred key combination. Here's an example:
    Keep in mind that when you enter the name of the action in a layered menu, such as File > Export..., or Share > Export..., you are only going to enter the last menu choice, not the higher levels.
