Adding keywords/tagging in bridge CS5

I'm using bridge CS5 on windows xp and 7 (mostly xp).  I'm trying to set up a seachable database of about 63,000 images at work on a server that many people have access to.  I was trying to put keywords on some pictues and it only let me put them on the JPEGS.  Most of the other files were .max and .bmp.  It wouldn't let me open the file info box to enter them, the option was just greyed out.
I was also wondering if anybody knew if setting the location of the cache to a folder on the server on each computer would work well, or if each computer needs to keep it's own searchable cache.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Not an expert on this subject, but before you comit a lot of time on this project in Bridge, explore other options as well, such as digital access management programs.
Bridge is not really set up for Network use although some use it that way.  Also, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements stores the keywords in a database, while Bridge stores it on the image.  Although I have never used the other programs, it seems lke it would be easier to search.

  • PSE 9 Organizer Error Adding Keyword Tags and Other Woes

Hello, everyone.  I am having a ton of problems with PSE 9 Organizer.  The most frustrating and biggest problem is that I believe my catalog has been corrupted beyond repair.  I spent all of yesterday tagging my photos.  I had no problems and everything seemed to be going well until all of the sudden, the organizer suddenly froze up.  I had to use the Windows task manager just to get it to close.  This happened several times.  Finally, the organizer locked up my computer and I had to restart.  I opened the catalog and didn't seem to have any problems at that point.  I was able to view all of the images, video files etc.  I was even able to open the editor from the organizer.  When I tried to add a tag to a photo it gave me an error.  All it said was "error adding keyword tag" then nothing.  I tried to delete the photo and all it said was "error deleting photo".  This "error" shows up any time I try to make any changes to all of the images.  I can't add any new photos, can't delete, or add tags.  I have repaired the catalog several times.  It found errors the first time, but evidently that didn't fix my problem.  I also optimized and deleted my thumbnail cache to see if that was the issue.  Still nothing.  I have other catalogs and they work fine, so it is something to do with this particular catalog.  Any suggestions on what to do next?  Can I move the pictures to a new catalog without losing the tags?  And no, I didn't write the tags to the images because I wasn't done tagging.  Besides, PSE doesn't always write the tags correctly, as you probably know. Next problem.   When I first open PSE and select the organizer, it doesn't alway open.  I can see it on my taskbar (Windows 7 64 bit), but I can't get the window to maximize.  I have to close and open several times to get the window to open.  Sometimes it randomly jumps to my second monitor like it can't decide where to go.  Very frustrating.  I would appreciate any suggestions about what to do.  Thanks.

Back to the original question, after thinking about this for a couple days I have had two ideas for workarounds:
    1)  Copy my tag names into the photo metadata and create a new catalog to bring all of my images into.  This will allow me to keep all of my existing tags, and it MIGHT solve the tag display problem based on a test with a couple images in a new catalog.  The downsides to this are a) permanently writes my tags into the photo metadata which will be bad if I decide to change something later, b) loses all version sets, and c) loses all albums (although I don't have that many).  I found instructions for this workaround at http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs.
    2)  Live with the lack of color tag display in Organizer, and use reverse searches to find missing tag categories.  For example, if I want to find all photos that do not have a "Places" tag, I check the box next to the "Places" category (which also selects all sub-categories and tags below this).  Then I go to the Options drop-down in the Find Bar and "Hide best match results" and "Show results that do not match".  This gives me every image in my catalog that does not have a tag from the "Places" category, so I can go through and tag these as appropriate.
I would have gone with #1 if it weren't for the permanence of the keywords.  I guess I have a commitment problem (or I just haven't got my tag hierarchy figured out yet).  Instead, I am going with #2 which should give me most of what I need for now.  I will still hold out some small glimmer of hope that Adobe manages a fix for this issue down the road.

  • Keywords in Bridge CS5 & CS6 beta

After I installed Photoshop CS6 beta and opened Bridge CS6 I noted that it had imported a copy of my keywords from Bridge CS5.
However when a new keyword is added in Bridge CS5 it is not added to Bridge CS6….  and new keywords added in Bridge CS6 are not added into Bridge CS5.
Is there a way to sync my keywords in the two versions of Bridge?
Also need to know what will happen when I install the final release version of Photoshop CS6.  Will it import the keywords from my Bridge CS5 or the beta CS6?

Beleive CS5 and CS6 use different cache.  So you will probably have to trash the cache and let it rebuild to so new additons.
Can use Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder

  • Better keywords/tagging

I love Bridge, I use it every day. But it's major weakness for me is the tagging system and filtering by keyword. Right now I'm using Bridge/ACR for my importing, sorting and viewing. But I actually open Windows Live Photo for tagging and filtering by tag.I would rather not use two separate programs for my cataloging workflow. I hope you harvest ideas from the competition for CS6. These are the ways I think Windows Live does it better:
    Windows Live
    Bridge CS4
One simple, elegant panel for adding keywords, tagging, filtering
2 confusing panels, have to go back and forth
    Drag and drop
    Annoying checkboxes
    Nested tags
Bridge has nested tags as well, but it doesn't do a good job of reading the nested tags I made in Windows Live. It formats them as "places/canada/toronto" rather than a proper checkbox hierarchy. And vice versa, windows live doesn't recognize the Bridge hierarchy. I wish there was consistency.
    face recognition, geo tagging
right now it can't even recognize the existing people tags and geo tags, let alone add new ones. Picasa had no problem seeing the ones added in windows live, so it can't just be a proprietary thing

  • How do I add a keyword tag in iPhoto on the iPad?

I looked through the Help for iPhoto and couldn't find a section on how to add keyword tags to my images.
Things like the names of the people in the photos, etc.
The screen shots of iPhoto show a Face Taggging feature.
How do I get to that?
Thanks for any help or advice!

    I talked with Apple Support.
The iPhoto app on the iPad is not the same as iPhoto on the Mac.
It doesn't support adding keyword tags.
Possibly a feature to be added in the future.
I have iCloud enabled for PhotoStream.
So my iPad picture was sent automatically to my download folder on my pc.
I can take it from there into PhotoShop Elements and add the tags.

  • Adding keywords to MANY pictures with Bridge CS3?

    Hi there,
I am adding keywords to over 10,000 pictures using Bridge CS3.
I'm copying the keywords from their respective sites and pasting them into the metadata fields in Bridge. (Also adding others if they are not included.) I'm also changing them to all lowercase in InDesign so they are not repeated/duplicated. (i.e. "People" and "people".)
There are many folders and sub-folders but they are all under one main folder.
    Two questions:
    1) Anyone know of a easier way to do this?
    2) Is there a way to make the ("People" and "people") problem go away?
    Mac OS X 10.5.5 Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9
    Thanks.

    Thanks again Jim
This was not the answer I wanted to hear. So I contacted Adobe directly- They are very quick- they responded within 24 hours via email of course and reiterated what you said- I guess I just needed "official" word from Adobe, before I went to plan B
Anyways If anyone ever has problems like this where you got a bunch of .m1v files and you need to tag them with metadata- I suggest to do what I am doing and download tmpegenc it is a great little piece of software that will convert your .m1v files to .mpg files that you can now tag within bridge, Beauty
I will NEVER export to .m1v AGAIN
    Thanks TMPEG
    Thanks Jim and Thanks Adobe
    Best Wishes

  • Adding keywords to .ai in Bridge CS4

    Hello,
I'm currently working on adding keywords on our images and I noticed some .ai files accept to be added keywords while some don't.
Some files respond with the message that this file cannot store XMP metadata. Is it a matter of having an Illustrator file in a specific version or more?
    Thank you!
    Émilie

First check if you have used files that have been shot with different
lenses. A category in the filter panel only appears if there are two or more
different criteria present, otherwise there would not be any need to filter
Second, the lens has to be capable to interact with the EXIF data in the
camera, most of them do but not all. If a lens can't communicate with this
EXIF data the data will not be present in the metadata that comes with your
file and therefore not be seen by Bridge.
Last, check also the fly out menu top right of the filter panel, put your
mouse on it and you will see the list of filter categories appear. Those
with a checkmark in front are visible, those without are not.
How do I get the lens catagory to appear?

  • Adding a character into a pre-existing filename; Bridge CS5.1

I would like to know if it is possible  to add a character or in my case a ( Character & a Space ) in-between an already  pre-existing sequential number
    For example,
    1301 Filename.jpg - - - - -> 13 01. Filename.jpg  ( Added a ( Space ) inbetween the two numbers, and placed a ( Period ) aswell.
I would like to do this action to a group of files using the Batch Rename Feature; inside of Adobe Bridge CS5.1
Is this possible? Is there a work around?

I understand how string substitution works, you are misinterpreting the question.
I would like to change the number sequence from.
    1301 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 01. Filename.jpg
    1302 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 02. Filename.jpg
    1303 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 03. Filename.jpg
    1304 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 04. Filename.jpg
    1305 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 05. Filename.jpg
As you can see I would like to ( Add ) Characters not replace. the characters being a ( Space ) and a  ( Period )
But if there is a way to replace all of my sequence numbers together, that would be a viable option aswell. As of now I am not aware of a substitution command that will get rid of say a four digit combonation of numbers no matter what the actuall numbers
That last sections of what you copy and pasted states there may be commands ( Expressions ) to replace filename patterns, but I am not aware of any specific commands ( Expressions ) I must type inside of the text bar to achieve the affect I am looking for.
    Any pre-existing help on Expressions?
They are foreign to me and I would like to study the information for future use.
I will be searching Google, if by chance I come across information pertaining to this subject, I will let you know. As of now any help is much appreciated.
Ok I have figured out how to get rid of the string of numbers by using the Regular Expression of [0-9] but,
I still do not know how to add a ( space ) inbetween the numbers without doing it all manually.
Regular Expressions is the answer to my question, but now I have a new question. Which Regular Exresion do I use? It seems like it will take quite some time to get a good understanding of Regular Expressions, is there anyone who has a fair amount of knowledge on the subject who is willing to assist me in the mean time?

  • Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss

Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Bridge is the weakest of all Adobe applications I use.  It suffers from the same issues since its first release, when we were told to forgive the teething problems of any version 1 application.  Now it's in version 4.x.
I actually spent most of the last two days wrestling with Bridge, and getty pretty annoyed with it. The "Error writing metadata" bug caused me no end of problems in trying to reorganise my keywording of 20,000 photos, and turning the air blue in the process.
I agree that Bridge seems to be the poor relation in the Creative Suite. I call it the Less Glamourous Sister. It needs to be 64-bit to host 64-bit Camera Raw, and it needs to manage resources faster and more efficiently.
I've spent a fair amount of time watching Bridge's activity with a resources monitor utility, and it's a very busy lady. It seems to poll several drives every second or two, accessing the registry, disk-based settings and library files regularly too, even when it appears to be doing nothing. And, even though I had indexed and cached my whole 20,000 photo collection, Bridge insists on recreating some thumbnails and previews at random intervals.*
I decided that the anti-virus software suggestion was a red herring in my case (I now realise this is the Mac forum anyway). Photos which gave an error became subsequently locked for several minutes, and I had to edit the sidecar files by hand. In the end, I worked out that, even though there is no on-screen indication of activity, Bridge is quietly working its way through every item in the Content pane, and it is this action which seems to coincide with the Metadata Error. Wait for it to end, and chances are much reduced, but not fully removed.
Oh, and Adobe's customer treatment might be debatable, but that helpful customer you quoted was a regular abuser of other forum users, so I like to see a silver lining from that post.

  • Keywords in Bridge CS5 on Mac OSX network issue?

Is there any way for multiple workstations using OSX 10.6.3 to enter keywords using Bridge CS5 to photos residing on a server?  It appears that only one user may make changes or add keywords... the others are relegated to a read only status and cannot add or modify keywords.  If the file is duplicated on the server by another user, the original user is then denied access.  This is a huge issue for our office and our IT person has no clue.  Help please.

  • Bridge CS5 Keyword User Info

I am using Bridge CS5 to label almost 100,000 files, mostly jpegs, tifs, psds.
After finishing this project, I am anxious about not having to repeat it. I am looking for information about copying/backing up the work I have done.
I keep 3 separate copies of my photo library on 3 separate, external SATA hard drives. I am performing this keywording on one backup copy. When finished, is there a file or folder that maintains all of the data regarding the keywording that I can copy to the other two hard drives or is the keyword data part of each individual file. If so, I would recopy the entire photo library to the other two hard drives. I am assuming the keywording would then be copied also.
Any suggestions from this forum regarding this project and answers to my specific inquiries would be appreciated.
    John

The keyword directory is kept in user/app data/adobe/bridge/keywords
The keywords themselves are written to the images so you would need to copy the images.  There may be a way to just copy the keywords, but if so it would be a script.
If you use RAW files the keywords may be stored in the XMP file.  Make sure this file is copied with the file or you will loose the edits.  This can be a problem if copying to another drive and you do not have "export cache to folder" turned on.  It is a hidden file and can be turned on and off in View.
Also, be aware that in some cases writing to external drives can be a permisson problem.  If this occurs it can be circumvented by right clicking on Bridge icon and choosing "run as administrator".

  • Adding keywords in Bridge, causes illegal operand i.e. corrupts the illustrator files.

Upon adding keywords to a large amount of illustrator files in Bridge (mainly .eps but also some .ai), more than half of the files are now corrupt, giving me the following message:
    Can’t open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator: {eps_metadata_stream}
    Context: ‘5
It should be noted that ALL of these files were 100% okay prior to adding some keywords in Bridge.
Does anyone have an idea how to repair corrupt files, and whether this is a known bug?
    setup:
I haven’t yet had the time to update to CC2014, and am still using the previous CreativeCloud setup running OSX 10.8.5.

We just started using Bridge and I am on OS 10.9.5 and using Creative Cloud and we are running into the same situation. I load the images into the Bridge and have no issue with Photoshop files, but the Illustrator .eps files get corrupt when I add in keywords to Bridge for them. Haven't been able to find a solution to fix this so currently I'm just not adding in keywords which makes it difficult for our designers to search for these files to use on their projects.

  • Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection

This is the first time I used non-smart collections. But, I'm sure that I'm quite sure that I'm not doing anything wrong.
I simply dragged thumbnails into the collection from various folders and the collection shows all 20 images. Then, I close out Bridge and open it later, only to find that there are only 4 images in that collection. There may have been 4 images to start with, but every image I've added does not get remembered. This has happened twice and it's very unnerving because the images I am adding are coming from folders that are all over the place and it's very hard to look up all the pictures again.
    What's up with this?
    Thanks,
       Mike

I've just noticed this problem, by chance, whilst moving data to a new computer.
We found that files that were in collections were randomly missing from Bridge CS5's display, and sure enough, as described earlier, as soon as a file in the collection with a quote/spostrophe was read, that file and the rest of the collection were missing from Bridge CS5's display.
(This was using Bridge 4.0.3.9. Adobe Application Manager tells me my software is uptodate)
Because we had some backed up copies of Collections from both Bridge CS4 and Bridge CS5, I've been able to work a few things out, which I hope might help someone at Adobe get the problem fixed - and might help a few frustrated users too...
    Background
The following entirely applies to Windows 7 (and presumably Windows Vista too):
In Bridge CS4, collections files are stored in:
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Collections
In Bridge CS5, collections files are stored in:
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5\Collections
Both CS4 and CS5 store their Collections in files called <collection name>.filelist
Both are XML files, where file paths are surrounded by apostrophes:
    For example:
    <file uri='bridge:fs:file:///D:/Shared%20Images/Flowers/RHS/DSC_0788.jpg'>
Both Bridge CS4 and CS5 convert any spaces in file paths to %20 - so /Shared%20Images/ above is actually /Shared Images/ on disk.
    The cause of the bug
Crucially, however, in Bridge CS4, any apostrophes (i.e. single quotes) in file paths get converted to %27
But this conversion does not happen in Bridge CS5. And then when filelists get read back in, the data is truncated.
As a developer, I'm surprised at this sort of regression in behaviour, in such expensive software from such a large company.
    Workarounds
None of these should be required to be done by a user, I feel, but I have found that they do work, and they could be scripted (e.g. in Python) if someone were sufficiently desparate:
Edit your .filelist files that were created by Bridge CS5, and convert all ' in file paths to %27 - oh yes, and remember to do that every time you add any new files to any existing or new Collections
Edit your .filelist files and change the single quotes at the start and end of each <file uri line to double quotes
I don't regard "remove quotes from your file names" as an acceptable workaround, however. We've got nearly 400GB of files, going back more than 10 years, and various of these are referred to from other locations, e.g. InDesign publications: if we were to rename locations for the benefit of Bridge, we'd break other stuff on the PC.

  • Regarding Bridge CS5 Keyword transfer

    Hi all,
I am using an iMAC, running 10.7.2.

how to find and transfer the Metadata/Keywords from one system to another?
You can use the little icons for wing menu (top right in both panels) and choose export, save it to a proper place you can copy to the new iMac and choose import on your new machine.
By default the user library in OSX Lion is hidden but is easy to retrieve it (do a google search if you haven't done already so).
In the user library are all your customized settings.
    username/library/application support/ Adobe.
    inhere:
Bridge CS5 folder containing keyword list, output module user templates, workspaces and specified batch rename settings
XMP folder containing your metadata templates.
Also be sure to have saved your PS custom settings (actions, tools, brushes etc.)
In the same given path as before there is folder called Adobe Photoshop CS5 and this contains the folder presets, that should have your custom saved settings in it.
