Adding Labels in Bridge CS5

Can anybody tell me how to add additional labels within Bridge?  I know how to label photos with the existing labels within Bridge now, and know that you can change the names of the existing lables (ie change "Red" to "Bob"), but I have not been able to find anyway to add additional labels.  I am shooting pictures of a kids soccer team and I want to be able to have a separate label for each of the 14 kids on the team so I can sort by name.  Help please!!!
Thanks,
Jim

Yes, you would have to use 2 lines in the search field, one for label and one for rating.
But seems like it would be a lot easier just to put their name on the picture as a keyword.  Then sort by keyword.
Think out what you want before you jump into the keywords so you can get the correct structure the first time.  For instance do you want to sort by game, month, year?  If so have one keyword with name, the others for game, month, or whatever.  Using this method you don't need a huge list of keywords, but mix and match to get the right combination.  Then in sort you need a line for each keyword.
You can use filter or one keyword, rating, label to sort the current view.

  • How to add extra labels into Bridge CS5?

Hi folks, nice to meet you all.
I do not want to edit or rename the existing 5 existing labels into Bridge CS5. I just want to create new labels. So, I want to add extra labels to have more than 5 labels.
Does anybody know how to add extra labels into Bridge CS5? If so, please, tell me how to do it.
    Thanks.

  • Bridge CS5 error in writing meta data - Can't Add Stars

In trying to rate an image file by adding a star, while viewing from Content window, I can't do it either by clicking on the dots below the expanded thumb or in the thumb view below. Nor does the Ctrl button + 1/2/3/4/5 work.
No matter the file format, jpg, psd, raw or tiff. No matter the folder.
Under Edit>Preferences>Thumbnails, there is no option for checking Show Stars.
Something I must have done, but can't recall how to undue.

Did You ever get a solution? I also cannot  rate or apply labels in bridge CS5 with any of the described methods. The files are not locked, the problem is with all types of files (nef, psd, jpeg, tiff). I can modify them in PS without problems. All my files are on an external hard drive. My PS is fully updated. When I ***** on the dots below the file the stars show but immediately disappear when I leave the file. Rating or label do not appear in the filter list, but in edit I can undo rating. I have administrator rigths.
We are the only ones with this problem - I have, howver, failed to see anyone state that the problems is solved. It seems that your thread stopped suddenly. Therefore this message in the hope of reviving it.

  • Adding a character into a pre-existing filename; Bridge CS5.1

I would like to know if it is possible  to add a character or in my case a ( Character & a Space ) in-between an already  pre-existing sequential number
    For example,
    1301 Filename.jpg - - - - -> 13 01. Filename.jpg  ( Added a ( Space ) inbetween the two numbers, and placed a ( Period ) aswell.
I would like to do this action to a group of files using the Batch Rename Feature; inside of Adobe Bridge CS5.1
Is this possible? Is there a work around?

I understand how string substitution works, you are misinterpreting the question.
I would like to change the number sequence from.
    1301 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 01. Filename.jpg
    1302 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 02. Filename.jpg
    1303 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 03. Filename.jpg
    1304 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 04. Filename.jpg
    1305 Filename.jpg - - - - - - - -> 13 05. Filename.jpg
As you can see I would like to ( Add ) Characters not replace. the characters being a ( Space ) and a  ( Period )
But if there is a way to replace all of my sequence numbers together, that would be a viable option aswell. As of now I am not aware of a substitution command that will get rid of say a four digit combonation of numbers no matter what the actuall numbers
That last sections of what you copy and pasted states there may be commands ( Expressions ) to replace filename patterns, but I am not aware of any specific commands ( Expressions ) I must type inside of the text bar to achieve the affect I am looking for.
    Any pre-existing help on Expressions?
They are foreign to me and I would like to study the information for future use.
I will be searching Google, if by chance I come across information pertaining to this subject, I will let you know. As of now any help is much appreciated.
Ok I have figured out how to get rid of the string of numbers by using the Regular Expression of [0-9] but,
I still do not know how to add a ( space ) inbetween the numbers without doing it all manually.
Regular Expressions is the answer to my question, but now I have a new question. Which Regular Exresion do I use? It seems like it will take quite some time to get a good understanding of Regular Expressions, is there anyone who has a fair amount of knowledge on the subject who is willing to assist me in the mean time?

  • Bridge CS5: Images added to collection get removed from collection

This is the first time I used non-smart collections. But, I'm sure that I'm quite sure that I'm not doing anything wrong.
I simply dragged thumbnails into the collection from various folders and the collection shows all 20 images. Then, I close out Bridge and open it later, only to find that there are only 4 images in that collection. There may have been 4 images to start with, but every image I've added does not get remembered. This has happened twice and it's very unnerving because the images I am adding are coming from folders that are all over the place and it's very hard to look up all the pictures again.
    What's up with this?
    Thanks,
       Mike

I've just noticed this problem, by chance, whilst moving data to a new computer.
We found that files that were in collections were randomly missing from Bridge CS5's display, and sure enough, as described earlier, as soon as a file in the collection with a quote/spostrophe was read, that file and the rest of the collection were missing from Bridge CS5's display.
(This was using Bridge 4.0.3.9. Adobe Application Manager tells me my software is uptodate)
Because we had some backed up copies of Collections from both Bridge CS4 and Bridge CS5, I've been able to work a few things out, which I hope might help someone at Adobe get the problem fixed - and might help a few frustrated users too...
    Background
The following entirely applies to Windows 7 (and presumably Windows Vista too):
In Bridge CS4, collections files are stored in:
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Collections
In Bridge CS5, collections files are stored in:
    C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS5\Collections
Both CS4 and CS5 store their Collections in files called <collection name>.filelist
Both are XML files, where file paths are surrounded by apostrophes:
    For example:
    <file uri='bridge:fs:file:///D:/Shared%20Images/Flowers/RHS/DSC_0788.jpg'>
Both Bridge CS4 and CS5 convert any spaces in file paths to %20 - so /Shared%20Images/ above is actually /Shared Images/ on disk.
    The cause of the bug
Crucially, however, in Bridge CS4, any apostrophes (i.e. single quotes) in file paths get converted to %27
But this conversion does not happen in Bridge CS5. And then when filelists get read back in, the data is truncated.
As a developer, I'm surprised at this sort of regression in behaviour, in such expensive software from such a large company.
    Workarounds
None of these should be required to be done by a user, I feel, but I have found that they do work, and they could be scripted (e.g. in Python) if someone were sufficiently desparate:
Edit your .filelist files that were created by Bridge CS5, and convert all ' in file paths to %27 - oh yes, and remember to do that every time you add any new files to any existing or new Collections
Edit your .filelist files and change the single quotes at the start and end of each <file uri line to double quotes
I don't regard "remove quotes from your file names" as an acceptable workaround, however. We've got nearly 400GB of files, going back more than 10 years, and various of these are referred to from other locations, e.g. InDesign publications: if we were to rename locations for the benefit of Bridge, we'd break other stuff on the PC.

  • Color label incompatibility between LR3 and Bridge CS5

I have LR3 in English and Bridge CS5 installed in other language. Is this why whenever I assign color labels in Bridge they show up in LR as white(custom). BTW, star ratings transfer correctly.

Color labels are just words (strings) assigned to the photos, and if you use different laguages, those don't match. You can build your own Color Label Set in LR where you enter the words assigned by bridge to the different colors (Menu Metadata/Color Label Set/Edit). Then choose this color label set in LR and you'll get the colors.
LR shows white if it cannot assign the "word" in the photo to a color in the active color label set. You can see the "word" assigned to the photo in the metadata panel ("Label") or all of them in the metadata filter.

  • Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss

Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Bridge is the weakest of all Adobe applications I use.  It suffers from the same issues since its first release, when we were told to forgive the teething problems of any version 1 application.  Now it's in version 4.x.
I actually spent most of the last two days wrestling with Bridge, and getty pretty annoyed with it. The "Error writing metadata" bug caused me no end of problems in trying to reorganise my keywording of 20,000 photos, and turning the air blue in the process.
I agree that Bridge seems to be the poor relation in the Creative Suite. I call it the Less Glamourous Sister. It needs to be 64-bit to host 64-bit Camera Raw, and it needs to manage resources faster and more efficiently.
I've spent a fair amount of time watching Bridge's activity with a resources monitor utility, and it's a very busy lady. It seems to poll several drives every second or two, accessing the registry, disk-based settings and library files regularly too, even when it appears to be doing nothing. And, even though I had indexed and cached my whole 20,000 photo collection, Bridge insists on recreating some thumbnails and previews at random intervals.*
I decided that the anti-virus software suggestion was a red herring in my case (I now realise this is the Mac forum anyway). Photos which gave an error became subsequently locked for several minutes, and I had to edit the sidecar files by hand. In the end, I worked out that, even though there is no on-screen indication of activity, Bridge is quietly working its way through every item in the Content pane, and it is this action which seems to coincide with the Metadata Error. Wait for it to end, and chances are much reduced, but not fully removed.
Oh, and Adobe's customer treatment might be debatable, but that helpful customer you quoted was a regular abuser of other forum users, so I like to see a silver lining from that post.

  • Adding keywords/tagging in bridge CS5

I'm using bridge CS5 on windows xp and 7 (mostly xp).  I'm trying to set up a seachable database of about 63,000 images at work on a server that many people have access to.  I was trying to put keywords on some pictues and it only let me put them on the JPEGS.  Most of the other files were .max and .bmp.  It wouldn't let me open the file info box to enter them, the option was just greyed out.
I was also wondering if anybody knew if setting the location of the cache to a folder on the server on each computer would work well, or if each computer needs to keep it's own searchable cache.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Not an expert on this subject, but before you comit a lot of time on this project in Bridge, explore other options as well, such as digital access management programs.
Bridge is not really set up for Network use although some use it that way.  Also, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements stores the keywords in a database, while Bridge stores it on the image.  Although I have never used the other programs, it seems lke it would be easier to search.

  • How to add a Description Column in the Content Panel (Bridge CS5)

    Hi,
Is it possible to add a Description Column in the Content Panel. If so, how?
I'm talking about the Description from the IPTC Core data and I'm using Bridge CS5.
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

This is the screenshot of the Metadata Workspace with the Content Panel (not Metadata Panel). As you can see it shows Name, Label, Keywords etc. but it's not possible to show Description in that list as a column.
I still agree that it would be a big bonus if you could alter this workspace with description field (even with more lines etc) but what Curt shows you might be an alternative. I couldn't help noticing that you have not created your own custom workspaces.
Try and play with this. You have the option to divide the window in 3 columns max but you can create different panels as a row in 1 column.
Grabbing a tab and move it to a new location until a single blue line appears (between the borders, a bit tricky). A vertical blue line means as a column and a horizontal line means a row. A surrounding blue line means same panel but adding as a tab. You can rearrange the tabs by dragging to left or right. under the menu window you can select which panels are visible or use right mouse click menu on top of a panel to choose.
Sadly enough only 3 columns and only one panel of it's kind per workspace, but you can resize the panels also to your own workflow needs.
In Bridge preferences you can change the colors for background in the general tab and in the metadata tab you can select what info to view in certain sections. Personally I have set my IPTC to view only description, keywords, date created and a few other subjects.
That is the nice thing about Bridge, creating custom workspaces, save them and being able to recreate them without problems :-)
I attach some screenshot of my daily workflow (with the luxury of having a 30' screen) but there are plenty of other options possible, don't forget to name and save your workspace.

  • Can Bridge CS5 Collections be shared across a server?

I've seen versions of this question asked but have yet to find the answer.
I have created manual collections in Bridge CS5 that I would like to share with other designers using the same server, thus saving them the time of also creating the collection. I have found that I can pull the collection file from my users/library and send it to them to add to their library, but the problem is if the collection gets updated other users will not see the updates without receiving a new collection file. Is there anyway the collection file could just live on the server and everyone share it? or some way that would produce that results I'm looking for?
    Thanks for any help!

I've seen versions of this question asked but have yet to find the answer.
That's because I think there is no satisfying answer to this question I'm
    afraid...
A collection is not more then an alias of the files on the location and
still user specific, so altering the collection on one system user will not
automatically update that info to the other user of the server location.
Ideally that should happen but Bridge is to my knowledge yet not designed
for use on a server and Adobe does not support working over a network
because there are to many variations and possibilities in networks. At least
that is what I always have understood from previous talk about network and
    server use.
Some succeed in using Bridge over a network (the image archivist is a well
known example of that) but it takes a lot of discipline and knowledge to
achieve this. But I can't imagine it is possible to reach this with a
    collection.
In CS4 you could have tried the use of Version Cue but they discontinued
this option in CS5. Maybe rating and labeling, renaming and the use of
subfolders in a main folder will work but I have no access nor experience
    with working over a network.
Theoretically have all users point to the same main folder adding a new
folder should automatically update in the content window of other users.
However as said, this is in theory and you should have a clear convention
about who is doing what or able to change things. Do a search for the Image
Archivist on this forum or try his blog:

  • Adobe Bridge CS5 quit unexpectedly  OS X 10.7.5

    Adobe Bridge CS5 quit unexpectedly!
    I am using OS X 10.7.5.
    Thanks

Unfortunately these things happen.  If a restart cures the problem just put it down to bad luck.  If it keeps happening then it could be an incompatibility with CS5 and 10.7.5.  Make sure that you also check the Adobe Website for the latest updates and ensure you have them installed.  People like Adobe are seeded the updates before we get them and are supposed(?) to bring out any updates that address incompatibilities.  Sadly it doesn't always work!  Also, if necessary identify any new Third Party Software you may have added since upgrading to 10.7.5 and if the problem continues temporarily remove that software just in case it's causing problems.  Don't just remove it - especially if you paid for it - just disable it so that you can put it back afterwards! Or remove it and restore it from your back-up.  That's probably easier.
I get unexpected Quits at various times.  It can affect Safari, iTunes , iPhoto , Microsoft Office in fact almost anything!  There's no consistency to it and I must say with me simply relaunching the program again usually cures the problem.  It can happen simply because you've been clicking the mouse too enthusiastically and the computer - in trying to keep up - has simply lost itself!
Like I said unless it keeps happening just chalk it up to "One of those annoying things".
Also, external disc drives can cause problems.  I use Western Digital Drives and I must say that now I've decided to unplug them until I need them everything is much more stable.  I get no end of spinning beachballs with the drives connected - but none with them disconnected.  It's a bit of a pain because Time Machine is supposed to work in the background (which it does superbly as long as the darn disc drive behaves!)

  • Adobe Bridge CS5 Thumbnail

We are using Adobe Bridge CS5. How do you display the lens used to take the photo (70-200mm, 17-40mm, 400mm, 24-120mm, etc.) on thumbnail before editing?

In Basic there is still a lot to wish for in Bridge but in all honesty since CS4 Adobe has not shown much interest in developing it further and adding new features many wished for.
You can always add your wish for new features using the Photoshop family .com page, the more that wish the better chance it eventually get realized, but beware, don't hold your breath…
That said, while it seems logic in your workflow it is also a fact that not all lenses are capable of producing the needed metadata, nor is it standardized info

  • Problem with changing Label in Bridge CS3 and CS6

    Hi there,
I am having some problem with changing Label in Bridge CS3 and CS6 in windows.
    1. In Bridge CS3 (Windows XP), most of the time with most of the files, there is no problem. But I found that in some files, the Label does not get changed. I usually change Label by right clicking on the picture, then Label and select any Label. When I do so in those files, nothing happens. But when I rename the file by changing or adding just a single character, then it works. And if I again rename to original name, it still works. But without renaming the Label does not change. Again this does not happen with all pictures, but occationally with some. We usually receive pictures from different clients for editing purpose.
    2. In Bridge CS6 (Windows 7), if you create lot of Path using Pen tool in Photoshop for the purpose of removing background, you save the file, close, and change Label in Bridge, again open the file in Photoshop, you see no Path in the Path Pallette. So that means, changing Label works, but it removes the Path from the file. But if there is small amount of path, then no prboblem. But if there is lot of path, like you need to create for a necklace to remove background, then the problem arises.
I am using Bridge for a purpose where it is very helpful so I really need to use Bridge, and Labeling feature is the most important to me, but after feaguring out this problem, I am really tensed as to whether or not I will find a solution to this. So any help, guidance will really be appreciated.
Thanks very much in advance for any solution.
    Best regards

I have re-checked the issue and I found that the problem is with JPG file.
I wasn't even aware you could save a path to a jpeg file (always use PSD because of wanting to keep the Alpha Channel, jpeg only can contain 1 layer and no alpha channels and/or transparency).
However I tried it on a file with a simple path and one with a complex path. It seems indeed you have found a bug. The simple path is no problem but the more complex path is indeed disappearing.
It is not only label but also rate or adding IPTC in the description field. The moment metadata is saved to this jpeg file and reopened the earlier present work path of a more complex path is gone.
Despite the fact that to my opinion a jpeg is not the most suitable file format for saving a work path this should not happen. If a work path is saved to a jpeg then it should be kept saved after just altering metadata in Bridge.
It still is the same behavior in Bridge CC because that is what I use. Don't know when it started but it still needs to be repaired

  • Help in changing from iphoto to Bridge CS5

I am a mac user with an imac and a macbook pro and have added PS CS5.  My OS is 10.6.8 on my laptop.  How do I set or switch from iphoto to Bridge CS5 to store/catalog my photos?  Any help or tutorial would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Liza Ben Vaughn

How do I set or switch from iphoto to Bridge CS5 to store/catalog my photos?
There is a significant difference between Bridge and iPhoto. Bridge is a file browser and reflects the contents of the folders you point it to. iPhoto uses a central library to store the images in By default this library is hidden and only shows as a Package.
You first have to decide to use either iPhoto or Bridge as main application to manage your photo's, it is very hard to mix the 2 applications.
If you want Bridge for this you should create a new folder or folder structure where you can place the files in. For instance in your pictures folder but it can be located anywhere in your user account.
Then go to the pictures folder on your Mac (best use column mode for Finder windows) and choose the iPhoto Library file. When you use right mouse click menu on the library icon it shows an option called 'show package content'
This opens a new window and reveals the content of the library.
Now search for the folder called masters (or originals as I believe they called it in earlier versions) in list.
If you open this folder there will be a folder for each year you have add photo's to iPhoto.
In here are the original sized pictures nested.
Best way is just grab the year folders and be sure to copy them (instead of move, otherwise your originals will also be removed from iPhoto) to the new created folders where you want to point Bridge to.
After done point Bridge to a year folder and in the menu view choose 'show items from subfolders'. This will reveal all pictures in this year folder and starts caching them.
After caching is done you can choose to leave them in date folders as the have been created by iPhoto or start batch renaming and let Bridge get the shot date from Exif, etc etc. Organize, rename and add metadata keywords to the files the way you like.
If you use Photodownloader to import the new shot files you can point that to the wanted folder to be placed in.
    To many options to explain.
Be sure to have a Back Up and you can test what ever you like

  • Keywords in Bridge CS5 & CS6 beta

After I installed Photoshop CS6 beta and opened Bridge CS6 I noted that it had imported a copy of my keywords from Bridge CS5.
However when a new keyword is added in Bridge CS5 it is not added to Bridge CS6….  and new keywords added in Bridge CS6 are not added into Bridge CS5.
Is there a way to sync my keywords in the two versions of Bridge?
Also need to know what will happen when I install the final release version of Photoshop CS6.  Will it import the keywords from my Bridge CS5 or the beta CS6?

Beleive CS5 and CS6 use different cache.  So you will probably have to trash the cache and let it rebuild to so new additons.
Can use Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder
