  • New to forum and opinions on the Lenovo T420 being my first Lenovo Thinkpad?

First off thanks for letting me join.  Just wanted to get some opinions from some of the more experienced Lenovo owners and users.  I want to pick up the T420 as my first Lenovo Thinkpad.  What is the overall verdict on this laptop (Good build quality, reliability issues, or anything else I should be aware of)?  I use to own a IBM Thinkpad and just missed the overall layout of the Thinkpad specific look and functionality.  To date, the IBM Thinkpad has been my favorite Windows based laptop.  Any and all opinions would be deeply appreciated.
    May God bless!
    Ed

I've only had my T420 for a couple of weeks but so far I really like it.  I reminds me of a mini version of the W520.  My T420 has the i7 processor, NVIDIA Optimus and most of the options.  I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and currently have the Intel Series 510 120GB SSD in the primary bay.  I am waiting for a Samsung Series 830 SSD to arrive.
No complaints so far.  It runs nice, quiet and cool.
If I were going to improve anthing on the machine, it would be the screen.  The 1600x900 AUO screen on mine is fair but I can live with it.  I bought this machine new on eBay for an excellent price.
I am using the 6 cell battery right now and get a little over four hours of battery life. The 9 cell is quite a bit better but I like the flush lighter 6 cell.
Love the keyboard.  The trackpad is fair but I haven't tweaked the Ultranav settings yet.  Been using a mouse mose of the time.
I have several ThinkPads and I think the T420 is an excellent balance of power and features.  I am comparing it to my X301, T410s, T61p and W510.  I added a 34mm USB 3.0 ExpressCard (still testing).
After my experience with the W520 random shutdowns, I won't be totally comfortable with this machine for a couple of months but it's looking really good so far.  I am optimistic.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad 8 Wifi driver for Windows 10?

I've installed Windows 10 Technical Preview on my Lenovo Thinkpad 8. It's been working pretty nicely, except for one thing: the Broadcom Wifi card driver (Broadcom BCM4324 Wireless LAN Driver). Since this doesn't work I have to use a USB antenna.
This driver has gotten no update since the release of the Thinkpad 8! I tried running it in "Windows 8 compatibiliy mode" and that still doen't work. Does anŷone know of a possible way to make it work (either with an update, or an older driver in compatibility mode)? Any idea or suggestion (or word from Broadcom) is welcome!

I had the same problem and installed the Win 8.1 version of the driver.
First deinstall the microsoft driver, download the driver from http://support.lenovo.com/<xx>/<xx>/products/tablets/thinkpad-tablet-series/thinkpad-8/?tabName=Down...
replace <xx> by your language code. eg. en (my language code was de)
look for Broadcom BCM4324 Wireless LAN Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit) - ThinkPad 8 or (64-bit in case)
Start the installer and you're done.

  • Please help me make a choice--lenovo thinkpad versus other lenovos?

    Hi everyone,
Just joined and this is my first post here.
I live in India. I can get a non Thinkpad
Lenovo for 23,000 rupees [around $400]. The dealer didn’t tell me which model it was but it's dual core, 3rd generation, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 15inch screen, battery that lasts 3hrs.
PLUS a lifetime FREE subscription to Eset smart security six antivirus for as long as I'm in this particular state in India. If I move to another state or move to the US, as I hope to do in a couple of years, I will have to pay something.
I don’t need a large HDD, so that's fine. I need the laptop only for word processing and the internet. No gaming or programming or photoshop, so I don’t need high configurations like i5 and i7, which are prohibitively expensive in India.
OR I can get a second-hand Lenovo Thinkpad that is nearly 2 years old for about the same price. These are the specs according to the ad:
    Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Laptop / Intel Core i3 / 14.1" Display / 2GB RAM / 320GB HD
    Processor Speed:2.10 GHz
    Model:ThinkPad L420RAM:2 GB
    Operating System:Windows Home 7
    HDD:320 GBScreen
    Size:14.1"
    Colour:Black
    Processor:Intel Core i3 (3rd Generation) i3-2310M
    Warranty:No Warranty
Bought this laptop in Jan 2012. In perfect working condition. 14.1 TFT, DVD dual layer writeable, wi-fi, great touchpad, and all others in a perfect working condition. Excellent battery -- lasts for 7 hours with movie playing / gaming.
That was the ad. The advertiser told me that though he installed Windows he has always worked in Linux and therefore has not had any virus problem. Naturally we worry that any old laptop will have viruses.
He did offer to format and reinstall everything. He also said he can offer me a licensed copy of win 8 and Word for free.
I'm wondering which of the above I should buy. Can you please help me decide by answering my questions:
    1. I'm a writer; I write on the computer all day long. I need something that will work well if used 12 to 14 hours a day. Would the new laptop give much better service than the 2 year old one even if the older one is a thinkpad?
    2. does a thinkpad on average last more years than any ordinary laptop, or any other lenovo laptop? I can't afford to buy a new machine every couple of years. I want something that will last at least 5 to 7 years. My old desktop lasted 9 years, and I used it all day long.
If the thinkpad lasts longer than other laptops, then it might have as many years in it left as a new laptop, even if it has lost two years of its life already.
    3. the advertiser says the battery lasts for 7 hours. Someone told me that after a couple of years, all batteries last half as long as they used to. Does this mean the used thinkpad's battery is now not likely to last 7 hours as the advertiser claims?
But even if it lasts 4 or 5 hours, that would still be better than the mere 3 hours the  new laptop will run on battery.
If I buy a new battery for the thinkpad, will it last 7 hours or do all laptops lose the ability to run long on batteries over the years?
    4. will a new dual core, 3rd generation processor be faster or slower than a two year old i3 3rd generation processor?
    5. The advertiser said the reason the price was high was that Lenovo thinkpad was unbreakable. You could throw it out of a moving car and it would survive. Now I have no intention of throwing it out of a moving car, but accidents happen and it would be nice to know nothing would happen to it if I accidentally dropped it while carrying it from place to place.
So is it true the thinkpad will survive falls while ordinary lenovos won't?
I'm sorry this post is so long. Thanks so much to anyone who can answer even some of my questions.

    Hi, welcome to the forum!
First of all, you should ask the exact model and specifications of the new Lenovo from the dealer. You cannot compare models unless you know exactly the specifications. Second, you don't mention the price for the used L420, so we cannot give you definite answers. I will try to give you some guidelines, sorry if I'm not more specific.
In general terms, a Thinkpad is more robust than normal laptops. The L420 has a spill resistant keyboard, metal hinges for the screen and a very good construction with good plastics. If you accidentally drop it, chances are it will not be easily damaged, but it all depends on how it falls, on what surface, at what angle, open or closed etc. etc. Dropping it from a running car would probably destroy it, as it would any other laptop. It is more resistant but not invulnerable, so it all depends on the specific conditions (or your luck!). I have Thinkpads 8 years old and they are still working perfectly. I have an L520 and i expect it to last easily that much under normal conditions. But, as with all machines, you never know, it could develop a problem and die tomorrow. The chance is slim, but it is there and it could happen. Again, it depends on your luck.
On the other hand, I have helped friends buy new laptops and I have tested the Lenovo Essentials series (B590). They are very plain, well constucted, quiet and extra cool and they are cheap. For simple everyday use I would expect them to last as long as a Thinkpad, given the proper care of course. I wouldn't hesitate buying one of them.
Now for the battery of the L420. If it is the normal 6 cells battery chances are that 7 hours are out of the question. Only with a well preserved 9 cells battery this number is possible, so ask the seller for the battery type.
The laptop does not loose its capability of keeping the battery alive and a new battery will last according to its specs, whatever the age of the laptop. So you can always buy a new battery for an old laptop and there will be no problem.
For typical applications like word processing and internet use, all modern dual core processors from intel are more than enough. Again, a comparison is impossible because you don't have the specs of the new Lenovo but there is really no difference for the use you have in mind. I would suggest you add another 2GB of ram though - to both laptops - to ensure a smoother operation. It would cost around $30.
Another aspect you do not mention is the screen size and resolution. A 15.6'' standard HD (1366 X 768) is ok but maybe the 14.1'' with the same resolution will not be enough for writing all day. Ask the Thinkpad seller about the resolution of the screen, it would be nice if it is a 1600 X 900.
All in all, for the same price I would prefer the Thinkpad because it is a better laptop. There are also the Thinkvantage tools (software only for Thinkpads) that add more value to the package, especially the Power Manager. But if it costs more than $500, it becomes less attractive. For $600 I would not even consider it.
Of course this is just my opinion, based on the facts you gave. Try to get more details, wait for other opinions. In the end, you can't go wrong either way!

Here is the information from a BSOD crash months ago. I will try to gather the data on the next BSOD. I know this is a stupid question, but where would I find the serial number of this Lenovo Thinkpad 430s. I am certain I purchased this computer a little more than a year ago. The BSOD has been a problem from the beginning. I am a physician, retired, teaching Honors Anatomy & Physiology - pro bono- in a local high school. When the BSOD problem occurred, I just went to my old Apple MacBook and forgot about the T430s.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad W530 replacement keyboard

    Hi,
I am looking to buy a replacement keyboard for my Lenovo ThinkPad W530 notebook.
I'm looking for a US English keyboard.
Can anyone recommend an online retailer? I am having trouble with the Lenovo website itself.
    Thankyou,
    Steven.

    Hey there burrows,
As an option, you can always contact the technical support line and request a parts only order, and order the keyboard directly. To contact the support center you'll need to call 0800-5004618. Make sure you have your serial number, machine type and model number handy when you call. I hope this helps!

    hey Alphapoint,
try this, uninstall the Wifi LAN drivers. let Windows install its generic drivers.
test your connection with the generic drivers. See if that works, then install the drivers from our support site but before you install it, go to MSCONFIG and set your unit to Diagnostic mode first before installing.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T410 got errors with Fingerprint sensor device! So frustrating!

I have just bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad T410 2518-FAA from one of main agencies of Lenovo in my country. The new-buy laptop was said to be totally new, i.e. it was not a re-furbished, and I actually checked for manything to confirm the real status of this laptop. However, when I bought it back to my house, a serious problem appeared. At the laptop store, I did not have enough time to check the Fingerprint device, thus I skipped to check it. When I came back home, the Fingerprint sensor error of this new-buy laptop completely drived me crazy!!! I installed the Fingerprint software of Lenovo, but this software continuously reported errors: "Can not enroll users, can not update passport, and can not find fingerprint sensor device." I have tried uninstalled and reinstalled this software many times, and already checked for the latest version of this software, it was Thinkvantage Fingerprint sofware 5.9.3 for Win 7-32 bit. My operation system is Win 7-32 bit. But these errors still appeared again and again. I already checked the status of TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor in Biometric Devices, uninstalled then re-installled this device, and it showed that this device was working properly and up-to-date, and I already unchecked the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", but all of my efforts was in vain!!! These errors still appeared and it drives me crazy! Up to now I had been unable to enroll my fingerprint to set up the fingerprint reader! These 3 errors just kept prompting in front of my eyes! Another problem is that the laptop can transfer files to my Nokia E51 mobile via Bluetooth, but I could not make the reverse transfer for a file from this mobile to laptop! Oh, I am very disappointed about Lenovo now! Inside the manufacture box that carried the laptop, there are just some instruction guides without any installation CD for installing Thinkvantage softwares... I had to go to the website of Lenovo and find a bunch of links of softwares that I tried many times but I still did not know how to donwload... I had to donwload the Thinkvantage Fingerprint software from another website... Please help me, guys! Did you encounter the same problem with me? May you please instruct me how to solve these problems! Thank you a lot!

    hey Moon_Light,
i would suggest uninstalling all ThinkVantage software, then go to http://support.lenovo.com ; download all drivers for you unit and install.
at the same time do a bios update as well.

  • Buyer Beware - Horrible Production/ Shipping Time for Lenovo ThinkPad

I ordered my Lenovo ThinkPad T530 on January 27th, with the quoted estimated shipping time to be 02/08. I get an e-mail on 02/05 saying that my order would be delayed and shipped out within 30 days of this notification. This pushed my shipment date to 02/28 with expected arrival time for 03/04.
    Here's my timeline:
    01/27/13 - Placed order
02/05/13 - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected shipment to be delivered within "30 days of this notice"
02/08/13 - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected to be shipped on 02/28/13 arrival on 03/04/13
03/04/13 (12:50PM) - Checked my order status and it said that my shipment won't be shipped until 03/13/13 arrival on 03/20/13. Sent an e-mail to Lenovo. e-mail included.
03/04/13 (03:57PM) - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected to be shipped on 03/13/13 arrival on 03/20/13
    03/04/13 (04:23PM) - Received e-mail from Lenovo representative Shadiqulla *** - e-mail included.
So my order has been delayed THREE TIMES. When was my laptop suppose to be shipped? 02/04/13
As of 03/04/13, they told me my order has been DELAYED AGAIN. So forgive me if I don't take your generic copy and paste apology as a sign that you guys are actually doing something that actually helps the people who buy your product.
I would love a refund, but at this point, what can I say, I'm an optimist, and I'm pretty *** patient, so I'll wait until the 13th, but I just wanted to warn the rest of you.
This is ridiculous and highly inconvenient. I've waited over 36 DAYS for this product and it's still not even in production. You obviously don't care for your customers. This has been the worst experience I've ever had with a company and I hope everyone else is more cautious about purchasing anything from them. Because if this is the example of their customer service now, imagine what it's like when you have the computer down the line.
I'm forwarding my experience to the BBB and I'll keep things updated.
    -Christy
    E-mail to Lenovo:
    To whom it may concern,
I ordered my laptop on 01/27 and not only has it been delayed TWICE, but I wasn't even notified when the THIRD delay occurred. If you truly "value" your customers, then you wouldn't continue to test their patience by giving a horrible estimate time of the shipment date, when you're short on parts. That way, I would have time to secure a different laptop from a different manufacturer. I had high hopes for Lenovo through personal recommendations, but no matter how good the product, the *** customer service can only go so far. Your company makes me feel like a dog.
The order tracker provides practically provides ZERO tracking, because during the past month, nothing has been placed or updated except for how my laptop is continually delayed. This is ridiculous!
For the sake of keeping my anger in check:
What is the ACTUAL status of my order? Has it even been BUILT? It was suppose to arrive 2/4, then delayed shipping to 2/28 with 3/04 arrival, now delayed again to 3/13 arrival on 03/20.
Give actual updates, what's the point of having an order status page - have something actually useful and reliable.
Change the estimated shipping time for the other ThinkPads on your site. My same model and custom built is suppose to be shipped at the same time that someone else places an order for today - that's just ridiculous!
I've been extremely patient when you said it would arrive a month after the quoted shipping time. Thank-you for providing me with the *** experience I've ever had with a company. I was suppose to have it shipped by 03/05 at the latest, and you just tried to sneak the last delay past me. Actually deliver on your word and deliver your product! This is beyond ludicrous I'm suppose to have my laptop already!
    Sincerely,
    Christy *********

I ordered my ultrabook  from Levono because we use (hundreds) of them in our organization and I wanted one for home to also do work related business on. When I ordered it, I was told by the salesperson that I would recieve it soon because I live a few miles from the US headquarters and not far from the NC warehouse. I then got an Email that contradicted what I was told;  my machine would be delivered 6 weeks later; shipped from China.  I ordered this unit because I am aware of Levono's reputation for quality and impressed by how soon they became big player in the USA laptop market.  Ir Levono wants to stay competative; they absolutely have to deliver, and deliver sooner. In today's world, people and businesses depend on laptops, and when they need them, need them right away. I would be happy to get this sooner, and much more likely to advertise Levono, and buy from them again, if I did.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga OS Upgrading

    Hi All,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga laptop, Model no is 20CDA016HH. In this windows 8 Home edition is already installed. My doubt is that, can I upgrade the windows 8 Home Edition to Windows 8.1 Pro Edition. What should I do for that.
Advance thanks for you kind support.
    Regards,

There should be an installer somewhere on your computer - look for a file called "iTunesSetup.exe" (32-bit) or "iTunes6464Setup.exe" (64-bit) - you'll almost certainly have got the second of these on a Windows 8 machine.  Then double-click on this file to install iTunes.  If you can't find the files, the direct links are here:
    iTunes 12.1.1.4 (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe
    iTunes 12.1.1.4  (64-bit) - itunes6464setup.exe
    iTunes 12.1.1.4  (64-bit "for older video cards") - iTunes64Setup.exe
The last of these is an alternative installer for 64-bit systems you find that using the "standard" 64-bit version causes playback issues or problems with QuickTime or Outlook integration.

  • Lenovo thinkpad L412 blue screen when i move my laptop

i am using lenovo thinkpad L412 laptop
my screen gets blue screen when i move my laptop. if i dont move it it just works fine.
i tried to update my stytem for latest driver and software but still problem doesnt go away.
i also run the diagnostic test for hardware but it doesnt show any problem.

You can't have a blue screen in bios, blue screens are a "feature" of Windows OS.
What is the error code mentioned on the blue screen? This could give information about the nature of the problem.
You could also try to boot from a Linux Live cd distribution, such as Ubuntu for example (no need to install it, just boot from it). If the Live cd works well then most probably this is not a hardware problem but drivers related as somebody already suggested.
Please tell us the machine type of your laptop, the operating system used and any hardware changes you have made (added memory, changed hard disk etc). Give as much details as possible!

  • Lenovo Thinkpad X series for pro wildlife photography?

A Lenovo Thinkpad x series enquiry please!
As a professional wildlife photographer I'm after a tough notebook that MUST  have the following:
A matt screen-a must for viewing photos outdoors
HDMI- imperative so I can hook it up to my HD monitor back at base
large capacity battery - minumum 6-7 hours in the field
    potent processor
    as much RAM as possible
    powerful graphics card
    light weight
Will the X1 or X220 have these? I thought they had glossy screens??
    Much appreciated folks...
Moderator edit: Added detail to subject.

Nothing in the X Series has a truely "powerful" graphics card. The X1 and X220 both use the Intel HD 3000 graphics integrated into the processor, not a separate graphics GPU. What exactly are your needs? You mention photography but not video. It should work fine for still photography but not necessarily for video processing.
Besides that point, the X220 looks like it can meet your other needs if you configure your purchase to match (8 GB RAM, external battery pack, DisplayPort to HDMI cable). The X220 has a matte screen (X1 has a glossy screen).
