Adding lines/shapes without moving the text

Hi,
Im trying to use the draw with pen function to draw lines around a text, but every time i finish the line the text moves into a different position. How can i make it so the text is locked in one place? And if i want the line to go through the text, is this possible?

Possible to create a second handle on a point without moving the first one?

Hello again,
Just had a question about something that often drives me crazy. Sometimes when I'm modifying an object (especially text that has been turned into outlines for logos etc) There are points on the path that I want/need to remove. Many of the times the points I'm removing had part of the curve that made the path look nice and smooth. For some reason Illustrator likes to create two points overlapping each other with a handle extending in opposite directions for each instead of one point with two handles...
In the cases where I have a point on a path with only one handle, whether it overlaps another point or not, is there a way to create a new handle on the opposite side where a handle doesn't exist without moving the handle that is already there? I hate fiddling with the path for 10 minutes afterwards trying to get everything back into the same position again. I would like to be able to drag out a new handle while locking the old handle in place, but the initial behavior of the convert anchor point tool seems to be to get rid of the old existing handle and recreate two new handles which resets everything.
Is there a way around this? A tool behavior option or maybe even a different tool that will let me just add the one handle to the point that is missing without moving or deleting the existing handle on that point? If it matters I'm using Illustrator CS5.5. Thanks for any help in advance!

Thanks for the responses guys! Unless someone comes along with a completely native Illustrator solution I think the Pathscribe tool is what I'm looking for. The unify command in that other post sounds like just the thing for the randomd weirdness Illustrator does when you convert text to outlines etc. and I'll probably mostly use that method for the overlapping points that are created in those case. I would say close to 50% of the time though I need to add a handle to a point that isn't overlapping like where a letter shape curves on one side but is straigh on the other. I guess a good example of that would maybe tip of the "v" shape in stylized or script fonts, they often have a straigh side and curved side. Sometimes it's also me because I'll go with a more straight line concept for a portion of the letter shapes and then change my mind back again, by which time I have removed some of the handles that I want to put back. It sounds like VectorScribe will do exactly what I want the way I want it and save me a lot of time having to zoom way in to get the fine control I need to restore the paths orginial curve.
All in all a pretty solid solution between the two. I'll have to pick up VectorScribe and will use unify where applicable. I don't understand though why this isn't something that Adobe hasn't made a native provisioin for? Seems there would be many times while making a design that you might want to change your mind without having to completely redraw the entirety of a curve, especially if you're doing an illustration from scratch. I thought there had to be a native solution and I was just somehow missing it completely... maybe they don't want to step on the 3rd party vendor's toes who have made plug-ins to deal with this sort of thing? Illustrator has been around a looong time now, seems like they would have come across this more than a few times... maybe I'm just not creating illustrations using the "proper" methods.

I would like to move the Tv show folder to an external HD. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes music folder?

I would like to move the TV Shows folder from my iMac's HD to an external HD to free up some space. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes Library folder? If so, can my other devices like iPads and Apple TV find the moved TV shows folder?

All kinds of things are possible with iTunes, but few of them are easy. Yes, you can isolate TV shows on a different drive. The degree of complexity depends upon how much work and learning you are interested in doing. The easiest solution is to delete them all from iTunes but do not let iTunes delete the actual media files. Then go to the folder where TV shows are located and copy that folder to a different drive. Now hold down the option key and drag them back to iTunes so it adds them again. Using the option key means the file doesn't get copied to iTunes' main media folder. However, since these are being added as new files it means you risk losing some information entered about them such as personal ratings, date added, date last played, etc. There are ways of retaining this data but that's where you really have to learn how to do workarounds with iTunes.
I have never seen an AppleTV, nor used an iPhone but my understanding is these devices do not directly use the files, they do so through iTunes. As long as the entries can be found in iTunes then they should be accessible by other devices.

How do you move an Event Library without moving the physical media

I've got a large library of media that needs to be organized, with new keywords. I have multiple people on different computers attacking portions of the media all stored on a single raid, accessed via gigabit ethernet. When the libraries are created on each computer, the media is kept in it's original place. Because the drive is networked, FCP X won't let me place the Event Library on the drive, though I can access the media. It will also not let me move or duplicate the libraries to the networked drive. If I connect a drive locally, I can move, copy or duplicate the Event Library, but, here's the problem, instead of copying the alias' to the media, and keeping it like the original event library, it copies the full media into the new library, unnecessarily.
Has anybody found how to copy the Copy, Move or Duplicate the Event Libraries without moving the actual media to the new Library? I'd like to copy the new libraries to the networked drive where the media is stored and then relink the files. Then I could merge each computers Library into a master library.
Does that make sense to anybody? There has to be a way to stop FCP X from unnecessarily copying the media.

There are two basic Title formats — I should say Layouts — available: Text (plain) and Paragraph. (The plain text version usually does not appear with the blue dot controls — those generally appear for the paragraph type control.)
If the Title is using a Paragraph layout, it's like having a mini version of Text Edit available inside FCPX. You can tell when you click on the text (when the title is selected) -- a rectangle will appear around the text like so:
double clicking on the text will give you the bounds controls which you can use to redefine the text area without distorting the text. Once selected, notice the button that appears in the top right corner of the canvas:
Pressing that will activate the ruler. You can right click on the ruler and add Tab Stops (left, right, center and decimal.)
So if the title uses paragraph formatting, you can create a very WYSIWYG type of display text (use the Text inspector to alter text selections within the paragraph bounds.)

How can i outline a visual shape made of a group of elements (vector shapes) without outlining the individual elements or margeing them togeather. I would normally go by marging them togeather but client requested they be unmaged

group the objects
select the group in the appearance panel and go to Effects>Path>Outline Object
then add a new stroke to the Group
then select that stroke in the appearance panel and go to Effect>Pathfinder>Add
the go to Effect>Path>offset path if you wish to give it some space around the object like such

CS3 Shortcut: How to switch to Preview Mode without leaving the Text Frame

I saw a video were someone was typing and switched to the Preview Mode without leaving the Text Frame (you could still see the blinking cursor at the same spot). Also the Top Menu wasn't used. It must be a Keyboard Shortcut.
Does anyone know which one? Thanks!

That person had defined its own shortcut. You can do that under edit >
shortcuts > tools
I assigned ctrl-w on my mac.

How to delete eMail attachments without deleting the text

Often people reply to eMails that I have sent and the resend all the attachments. So maybe I've sent 10 photos and this is 2mb in size. They reply - often more than once - and the attachments are all there!
With Eudora, I could simply go to the Eudora Folder and delete the attachments to save HD Space (hey, 2mb a few times per day for a few years is a lot of gb!)
How to do that in Mail - but without deleting the text of the message they sent?

YES!! THANKS VERY MUCH! And now there must must must be a way to alter incoming eMail text and then save that without forwarding or whatever.
By the way - I have found my Mail INBOX for my POP and also for my MobileMe accounts (as well as the other mailboxes). In my Library/Mail folder. OK so my INBOX for my POP is 800mb in size. Let's imagine that I have 8000 messages and 200 of them have attachments that are 1 to 10mb in size. If I now select all the messages in the INBOX and delete the attachments, will I see that INBOX drop substantially in size? And those attachments are "glued" to each eMail, right? I can't see them other than opening each eMail and then if I want to save the attachment(s) somewhere, doing that manually, right?
Is there a way to have all attachments automatically saved in another folder? But then they likely are not linked to an eMail - so if I then delete the attachment that is linked to the eMail, the attachment I saved to another folder is there OK- but it is no longer associated with the eMail, so I might not know to what it is related at some future time.
There were some nice advantages to Eudora-- you could quickly scan your attachments in coverflow or other mode--
Mail's way has some advantages in that you always have the attachment linked AND you can save another copy easily.
Likely best to archive each 31 Dec and then have INBOX-2009-21-31 and next year INBOX-2010-12-31 -- I did that with Eudora and have every message received and sent (most with attachments - but that's a bit tricky) - since 5 March 1996. Handy that.

How to insert a String at the CaretPosition without moving the Caret?

I have a JTextPane wrapped by a JScrollPane. The JTextPane is where chatroom messages appear. When a message is appended at the end, it determines whether to scroll to the bottom based on some conditions (scroll to the bottom only if the user was already viewing somewhere near the bottom). That part is working fine.
Although the JTextPane is not editable, it allows the user to make selections using a mouse so that blocks of text can be copied from the chatroom. The default caret of JTextPane handles that for me.
But the problem comes when the caret position is at the end of the document when my program inserts a new message with the following code:

doc.insertString(doc.getLength(), message + "\n", null);The caret was at doc.getLength() to begin with, when the new message is inserted at the end, it "pushes" the caret to a new position. The caret movement is causing JScrollPane to scroll to where the caret is visible (the bottom), therefore interfering with my scrolling algorithm (see above).
So, when the caret is doc.getLength(), how do I insert a String at doc.getLength() with the caret staying at the original position?
In other words, how do I insert a String at the caret position without the caret being moved?
Note:
1) I don't want to use setCaretPosition() to set the caret to its original position, because calling this method will trigger a CaretEvent, thus causing the JScrollPane to scroll (to the caret) which is not what I want (see above).
2) I don't want to remove the CaretListener, cause then the JScrollPane won't scroll even when the user wants to make a multiple-page selection using the mouse (dragging the selection off screen).
3) I want to keep the Caret at the original position so that the user won't lose his/her selection when new messages appear (which can be quite frequent).

I keep forgetting how difficult it is to do such simple things in the text package. But it's not impossible! Here's a way to replace the relevant listeners, plus a sample implementation. If you know you'll never, ever delete any text from the JTextPane, you may not have to provide a replacement DocumentListener at all; this one just makes sure the caret isn't past the end of the document.

How to center a title in pages without moving any text above it?

I want to have text in the top corner and a title below like this:
Name
Professor
Class
Date
Assigment
Insert title here
But everytime I try to use the center align button to move my title, it moves the five lines above it as well. Selecting the text I want to move and then aligning it does not work either. I recently updated to the most recent version of pages available. Is there a hidden setting I need to turn on/off for this to happen? I have never encountered this problem in microsoft word.

You haven't typed a return at the end of each line.
Paragraph styling unsurprisingly applies to the entire paragraph.

Lines above and below the text

Hello
I am working in a file created by somebody else and am having a problem with styling - I just cant figure how it was created.
There are lines running the length of the text box below the heading. When i try to remove the text the line dissapears as well, so clearly its somehow inbedded in that box. There are other instances when i remove the text box but the lines stay and i cant remove them at all, i cant click on them... (at first i thought they were a part of the master but clicking comand shift doesnt get them off). what are these? can somebody help please?

Leaving one line space before starting the text in smartforms

Hi,
I want to leave one line space before starting a text.
i LEFT one line space on the text node but it's not working.
eg: i need to print "Header text". Before printing this i need one line space. Created a blank node for space still not working. Can anyone help me on this.

in the editor type as ,
"Header text"
where / is Line feed and * is a Default Paragraph Format.

Is it possible to edit (levels, curves, exposure, saturation, etc.) a selected area of a photo (using quick selection, magnetic lasso, etc.) without moving the selected section to another document and editing it there?

I'm trying to edit a portion of a photo of a lake so that the rays of sunlight (the lines that run across the sky) are more prominent, without darkening the rest of the photo. I've sucessfully selected, removed, and edited the sky in the photo (the part that I want to enhance the sun rays on), but I can't figure out how to get that piece (currently it's own document) back onto the original jpeg document. I took the selection from the Background copy if that is of any help to figuring this out.

Another way in photoshop is to make a Group above the photo. add a layer mask using the selection and put the adjustment layers in the group

What is the best way to move a LR2 catelog without moving the images?

I have several catalogs on different drives and I now have a much larger drive and have decided that I want to keep all of my catalogs on one drive under a folder named lightroom catellogs.
Can I simply move my .lrcat file(s) and associated preview folder(s) to the new location and expect LR2 to work properly when I open the newly moved .lrcat file? Or, are there hidden files or hard coded directory paths inside the .lrcat that would cause issues if I did this?

I have moved the catalog files numerous times without trouble. I would suggest that you copy the Catalog Folder and all of its contents to the new drive, without deleting the original. Make sure Lightroom is not running when you do this. Then open Lightroom while holding down the OPTION key, and you will be presented with a pop-up allowing you to select the catalog file in the new location. Once you select it, Lightroom should operate as before.
Then go ahead and delete the previous catalog folder.
