Adding loops & instsruments

Am wanting to add some loops & instruments to Garageband and wondering what folks here recommend as the best value and the best sounding.
Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If you want instruments, search the web for "soundfont", there are 10s of thousands floating around.
For loops, search for "apple loops"

• Adding loops to the loop browser.

I'm using mac os 10.4.11. I have placed all my loops on an external hard drive.
1) Are only apple loops allowed to be added or aiff loops in general as well?
2) when adding loops to the loop browser should one add an entire folder if they are in a folder or just the files within a folder? I added a folder of flutes but can not find flutes anywhere in the loop browser file list.
3) As I didn't want the loops within the jam pack voices, and rhythm section installer packages to be added to garageband I removed the loops folders from the packages, and dropped them onto the loop browser. When looking in the jam pack management it shows the rhythm section but not the voices. When I again attempted to drop the voices folder it said it was already there, although I still can't see it.
4) Once I understand how to do this correctly should I trash the loop browser apple loops index file and re-drop all the loops on the browser again to get everything cataloged correctly?
Thank you,
Robert

• Adding loops problem

Hi I dont seem to be very successful adding loops. I drag the folder of loops to the browser and GB says it adds but when I search for them, I cant find them - seems some Loops are there but not others.
The files are all AIFF with extension of both .aif and .aiff. The files are listed in the finder in library>>audio>>apple loops>>user loops but dont come up in the browser.
I restarted garageband to reload but that didnt help.
Strangely loops which are in one folder seem to appear in the wrong loop browser as well.
Thanks in advance

The loops have to be in the same measure as your current piece (most of them are 4/4), and if you have "filtering" checked near "keyword browsing" in the Prefs, GB will only show you loops whose key is not more than 2 semitones off of your song's key.

• Adding loops and loops format question

Hi, i've been facing difficulties adding loops into my GB. My problem is: "Loops do not appear in my loop browser nor the loop list from the silver loop bar above the browser".
Yes, forgive me for asking this repeated question but after checking the help tutorial, my personal GB guide books, and even HangTime's FAQ, sadly, i still dont find any answers.
Generally, the procedure is pretty simple from all the sources i've read. Simply drag the folder or loops into the browser and thats DONE right? I did exactly what it said but sigh...maybe there's something wrong with my Macbook?
For your information, all the loops that i've been adding are loops from CDs coupled with FutureMusic and ComputerMusic magazines, so i believe the sources are pretty reliable i hope.
As i was struggling to add the loops, this msg popped up for the first time; "Loops that are not in Apple format will not be added into GB"
So, is the loop format the main cause of my problem?
if yes, is there any way to convert the format? what is the procedure?
ps: My current status is, some loops i added are in my browser while some dont although they exist in User/Library/Audio/AppleLoops/UserLoops.
Thank you in advance.
Peace

So, is the loop format the main cause of my problem?
likely.

• Question with adding loops

When adding 3rd party loops, how does Garageband know how to label them? How does Garageband know if it's a drum loop or a bass loop, etc? I recently added Beta Monkey drum loops and they did not show up in the browser.

Hi,
How are you populating the internal table..One by one or bulk..
DATA: BEGIN OF ITAB OCCURS 0,
SERIAL TYPE SYTABIX,
ORDER TYPE VBELN,
ITEM TYPE POSNR,
END OF ITAB.
If one by one..
DATA: V_TABIX TYPE SYTABIX.
LOOP AT ITAB_OLD.
V_TABIX = V_TABIX + 1.
ITAB-SERAIL = V_TABIX.
ITAB-VBELN = ..
APPEND ITAB.
ENDLOOP.
If bulk insert..Then loop at the internal table and then add the serial number..
LOOP AT ITAB.
ITAB-SERIAL = SY-TABIX.
MODIFY ITAB TRANSPORTING SERIAL.
ENDLOOP.
Thanks,

• Questions on Adding Loops

New to GB 3 (actually first mac is 2 wks old...LOVING IT!) Trying to take a full album side which is captured in one track and split it up into separate tracks or files for sharing to ipod. Genius at Apple store did this by saving a sample input from a keyboard to the loop library. When I tried this, the "add to loop library" choice is disabled. Is there a size limit on what can be added to the LL? Are there other good and fast ways to split an album side into separate songs for sharing with ipod and conversion to mp3? Thanks. And nice forum.

the genius was ... not.

• Problem Adding Loops to GB 5.1

I'm adding .aiff loops to GB 5.1. I see the scroll and message, indicating they are being added, but when I search for them, most are missing. What am I doing wrong? Running Snow Leopard. Thanks...

ISBEGINNING is a required property into SAP BPC 7.0 it is used to do the calculation of measures.
If you are doing a migration from 5.1 to 7.0 you just have to do maintain dimension properties for Time dimension - click Modify dimension properties without doing any change.
This will create automatically ISBEGINNING property for Time dimension.
You have to open your time dimension and to add a new column ISBEGINNING.
You have to add 1 for any Month and Quarter for your fiscal year.
Like Year.Jan or Year.Q1.
After that processing your cube will be fine if the other dimensions are correct.

• Adding Loops etc to Logic...

Looking for sites to access sounds, loops and plug ins etc to add to my Library in Logic?

Hey Bill
Thanks NI does have an array of awesome stuff in komplete 8 and the guys in the store would sell you anyting to make a commission I do have a 27" i mac with 4 g of memory and frankly I only use this for music but I do have a 1 TB external hard drive I havent even Dapened yet with info or storage.
Well lets take the facts in hand just guitar rig 5 alone is $200 so adding one at a time could run in $1000nds Komplete 8 is going for $499 I was asking imput on users that may have used NI or komplete 8 to see if it was a worth while buy for an addition to logic 9 and as for you imput I think i will take the chance and buy it.
I could always upgrade or add in the future. Main programs ? Massive programs ? try to explain becasue if it all comes down to it I will just install the whole thing on my external lastley If i do add the programs to the computer wont it automatically become a plug in in logic I know when i added addictive drums it added it to the I/O plug in section near ultra beat but anyway I am farley new to all this in the last year and wow what did i get myself into ...lol Hopefully a whole new world Thanks for your input Carl

• Adding Loops

I recently purchased a macbook and was exploring garageband. My list of apple loops at the bottom of the screen is greyed out inevery category. When I click on it, it asks me if I want to download all of the garageband loops (1.2 gigs). When I accept, it takes me to the updater, but no new updates are found. When I click the loop again, it says it is currently being installed and to check the updater. I can find no evidence of anything being downloaded. Does anyone know a way to download the library of loops? Thanks!

I had that problem and even after the disc install ,you may have to download from the site to gat all the loops.

• Why does Intel version always ask for my password when adding loops?

When I add loops to the PPC version, it never asks for my password. I want this behavior on the Intel version. Always asking for my password’s really annoying. Thanks very much. Peace.

Being able to to access, install and change anything on your computer with a simple keystroke is just not a good thing security wise. Maybe you don't download from unknown sources, use a wifi network, use public or work networks, IM, let others use your computer or let OS and software get out of date. But people reading this may not be in your situation. Most password hacking tools will start with single keystrokes and no password will gain access in a fraction of a second.

• Problems with adding loops

Hey I had my Mac for awhile now (Mac Mini) and I just upgraded to Leopard a few day ago. I'm having problems transferring loops onto the loop index..I tried the drag and drop and sometimes only a few get through but not all. And when I try again a prompt comes up saying there is already a folder with that name...etc. Is there a solution to get all of my loops onto the loop index. Im pretty new to GB and I dont know the best way..help plz!

If you want to record multiple audio tracks, you have to shift-click on each record button and make sure both are on different inputs.

• Adding loops for ALL accounts...

I was wondering how I can add some garageband loops such that all my imac account users can access the new ones. To my knowledge on my laptop, all I do is open up garageband, and drag and drop the new loops onto the loop browser. My only concern/quesiton is does this allow all other user accounts to get the same loops or is there a different method I must use to add them?
Thank you,
TM

Place them in your Shared folder ...
I'd put them in the [Harddisk]/Library/Audio/Apple Loops folder, but it certainly is a matter of taste.

• Adding User Loops

I'd like to confirm the results an experiment I tried with adding loops that seems like a bug.
I created a loop using the Apple Loop Utility and set the bpm and key. Then I imported the loop into GB. GB correctly interpreted the bpm and key when I changed the project key and tempo.
I added this loop to the Apple Loop Library by dragging it to the Loop Browser. When I looked in the Loop Browser the bpm and key were incorrectly shown as the current project key.
However, when I dragged the loop back into the project, the loop behaved as though it still had the bpm and key that I originally set in the Apple Loop Utility. So it looks to me like the info that shows up in the Loop Browser is getting incorrectly updated.
Is there any other way to add user loops to the Apple Loop Library and have them show up in the loop browser. I tried dragging the loop directly to the Apple Loop Library, but it didn't appear in the Loop Browser.

you can drag it directly
into the Loop Browser and it will retain its original
loop properties.
Tangoloco,
You have indirectly touched upon a weakness of the GB browser that I must continually work around. Since I am tonight in the process of implementing that work around I thought I would find this post and flesh it out.
Once an "Apple Loop" is in the GB browser no matter what its original BPM and key are you can only hear it in the BPM and Key of the master track. This is convenient in most cases but in some cases it is very inconvenient.
Inconvenient in the sense that one can only hear the loop in its original BPM and key by either matching GB's Tempos and Key to that loop OR you must use the Mac Finder to listen to the loop in its original condition.
Often I like to hear the loop in its original BPM tempo and key. Often I will find one loop that inspires me to create a tune around that loop in its original BPM tempo. But if I am making a GB tune in 120 BPM and go thru the browser and see an 80 BPM loop I can ONLY hear it thru the browser in 120 BPM.
I may even want to take that loop at its original 80 BPM and drop it into my 120 Track AT 80 BPM. So what I have to do is work around and find the loop in the Finder and then move it into the GB time line from outside the application. Kind of what your question is about in a way. Dropping a loop into GB so it can retain its original BPM and NOT be affected by whatever the tracks BPM is.
If I could change one thing in GB it would be the browser ability to playback. I would love to see a browser that can play a loop in the current tracks BPM (like it does now) and also give me the option to hear it in its original BPM.
Well back to music making.......

• Deleting from the loop browser

Is there a way to delete loop names from the loop browser drop down list and the actual loops themselves? I inadvertently (sp?) added loop folders that I had bought and downloaded to the loop browser without first naming the loop folders being added. So I now have a few generically named "apple loops" in the loop browser drop down list. I have since renamed the original folders and added it to the loop browser. I now have 2 copies of loop names in the drop down list; the only difference being the generic "apple loops" as opposed to the specific name of the loop folder added. I'm assuming I also now have two copies of the loops themselves since the names in the drop down list are different, which, of course, means more HD space being taken up. I cannot find anything about deleting this. I can't believe there isn't a way to do this. Any help?
Steve

• Loops messed up. Help needed quickly

Hi there,
I'm in the middle of kind of an important project that has to be finished by next week and of course those are the times when software seems to fail So I need help quickly.
Situation: the location of my apple loops seems to be messed up. I placed the "Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro" on an external disk (since it is the largest folder) and kept the rest on my internal drive. Now, when I search my loop browser, results seem to be incomplete. I know I had a lot more drum loops before I reorganized my loops than I have now.
So I became suspicious and as some kind of test I looked in the Library > Audio > Apple Loops > Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra folder, searched for a particular loop name (in this case "Adversary Strings"), typed it in the search menu of the loop browser in Logic and couldn't find it.
So I took al my loop folders in the "Apple Loops" map and dragged them back into Logic. It showed "Adding Loops" and after 10 seconds (which seemed rather short to me) this was done. I searched again "Adversary Strings" in the loop browers, still couldn't find it. So I dragged ONLY the "Adversary Strings" loop in the Logic Pro loop browser and then Logic gave me a message: "Logic already has this loop, do you want to replace it?"
But Logic doesn't have that loop! I can't find it, there's no filter on in my loop browser (I search "all loops") and I don't find some loops (it's not only the case with the "Adversary Strings") and when I want to add them I get the message that they're already in Logic...
So I deleted all my loop indexes, re-added the loops and still no results.
Any ideas out there to re-index these things correctly???
Thanks!

Hi,
thanks for the help, but as I said in my topic, I already followed the steps suggested in "Rebuilding the Loop index" (deleting my index and dragging the apple loops folder back in the browser) and of course I already searched the forum. My question was a little more specific, so I thought it deserved a new thread.
Eventually I solved it in a very strange manner, just by trial and error actually. When I added the whole loop folder, Logic couldn't find the loops (despite deleting the index and hoping for Logic to re-index the loops). But when I selected one loop out of a particular folder (for instance Jam Pack1) and added it, Logic added the loop, but this seemed to take a while. After that one loop was loaded, suddenly all the others that were in the same folder (Jam Pack1) were also visible again.
I did this for every different loop folder (5 jam packs, garage band, soundtrack pro and I life) and so got back all my loops...
Weird, but it worked
Thanks anyhow...
S.
