Adding memory Intel Mac 24"

I have a may 2008 Intel iMac 24".
I'd like to double memory from 4gb to 8gb.
Being under Apple Care, shall ask APple
to do this ?
Can I do it myself without voiding warranty ?
Last : which memory should I choose for best results ?
Thanks.

To make things very simple the maximum memory a 2008 iMac will address is 4 GB. Look in your owners manual for the correct RAM and the specifications of your machine, trying to add memory beyond Apple's specifications is a waste of time and money as the results are always the same......it will not work.
This subject has been covered many times in this forum, the results are ALWAYS the same.
Regards,
Roger

  • Intel Mac mini memory question

    Hi,
I got an Intel Core Solo Mac Mini.
    4 questions :
1- My mac has 512 mo. Is it ddr2-SODIMM memory (I think intel is different vs G5) ?
    2- Is it 2x256 mo or 1x512 ?
    3- I want to upgrade to 1 gig, do I have to buy 2x512 ou 1x1000 ?
    4- Does this ram is compatible ? http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=221705 6&CatId=2268
It said "PC5400" but all the specs seems to be "PC5300"
    thank you !

i recenetly purchases 2 gigs of memory off of ebay from approvedmemory
i called the apple store to get it installed, they do not intall 3rd party memory. so I called fry's and asked if they could do it. One store said no, but the Burbank, CA store has a guy who could do it. It took him 20 minutes to do it and it cost me $29.00
The 2 gigs of memory cost me $180 off of ebay.
The macstore/appleas store charges about $680.00 or so.... u do the math.

  • Dual PowerMac G4 or Core Duo Intel Mac Mini?

Right now I have a Intel Core Duo Mac mini. I have the following setup and specs on my desk. The mini contains the Duo 1.66GHz processor, 2GB DDR SDRam, 80GB hard drive, OS X & Windows XP, AirPort +Bluetooth, and so on. My problem is that I have always been a tower lover and that is why I purchased the Mac mini because I purchased a 20.1 widescreen HD Dell LCD with DVI-D, VGA, Component, and so on imputs. I wanted this for my Xbox 360 also.
Here is where it starts to get complicated. I also have four, yes four, external hard drives sitting on my desk, and I still need more hard disc space. I have a 250GB, 120GB, 250GB, and 60GB. Plus remember I have a 80GB in the mini. I am also looking into another 250GB or 500GB external hard drive.
Now before I had the mini, I had the original iMac G5 which had a 1.6GHz PowerPC G5 processor in it, 160GB hard drive, and 1.5GB of ram. It was showing age and I needed more speed and a bigger display so I ditched it for the Intel Mac mini.
In addition I am pulling 12 USB ports out the back of my Mac mini. I have a few hubs fulling almost all the ports. I need these for the external hard drives. If I go internal, I can probably live with 6-8 USB 2.0 ports. I will need at least 1 firewire or an iSight camera or my Sony HD handycam, but USB is more needed. In addition I see some PowerMac G4's came with Firewire 800? Is this something I would need, I currently however have no use for it.
But now I really see the need of a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver tower. I was looking into the Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 models, and really don't know which is faster. I would obviously love the expandability of the PCI cards, and independed graphics memory, but am I willing to transition back to PowerPC after moving over the Intel?
I don't know so I am posting it all here in the PowerMac G4 section of the Apple forums. I really hope I can get some good advice here. By the way, I am very Apple and technology frantic, so I know the ins and outs of a tower and stuff like that. So a non Apple warrenty would probably not be a problem.
But one problem is, how much could I get for my Mini which cost me $1099 and how much would a decent G4 tower cost me? I have an extra Nvideo GeForce 4 MX 5400 Ultra with 64MB of ram and DVD-D/ VGA outputs, so that isn't a problem. Plus to replace the AirPort Extreme built into the mini, I have a AirLink 101 Super G (108MBPS) Wireless PCI card. Bluetooth can be added with a simple USB dongle.
UPDATE: Forgot the mention I already have a DVD Burner compatible with OS X and 3.5inch bays. I would like a Dual Layer, but if its a tower, I can upgrade that anytime.
UPDATE x2: I would also like to mention that I use Gigabit Ethernet so any PowerMac model I choose would have to acomidate that such as the Intel Mac mini does.
    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!
    Mac Mini 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB ram, 1.5TB storage, OS X v.10.4.6, 30GB iPo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would like one day to have a tower with 4-8 HD drives
(120-250GB each) and HD DVD and Blue-Ray burners.
Good luck Even the Dell towers we have at work have space for 3 HDs, and thats only of you give up one of the CD bays.
Honestly, I unless a blueray player ships in the CPU, I would get a PS3. 1/2 the cost of a standalone blu-ray player, and a game system too
Expected street prices from Sony and Toshiba web sites:
    standalone Sony blueray player: 995.
    Toshiba HD-DVD: 599
    Sony PS3 w/ bluray: 499/599
Is the reason the PowerPC G4 can't handle HD DVD is
processor speed or what? Cause there is always
processor upgrade cards up to 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz Dual.
    Thanks.
One of the Apple support pages says you must have a G5...
does not give the background behind it.
On a G4, the OS will not allow HDDVD playback (as HD is defined by FinalCutHD) via the DVD player, BUT it will play back HD video clips (like QT trailers)
On my 867, 720i clips played back w/o a problem, but 1080 would freeze for 20 seconds at a time, (while audio continued normally)
on my Dual 1.42, I have no problems with 1080.
I hesitate to consider or recommend processor upgrade cards b/c for some, the price approaches the cost of a new machine w/o the benefits of faster busses, etc, and, right on the side of the OS X box, it says processor upgrade cards not supported. I would hate to upgrade the OS to find it refused to support my machine.

  • I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new Ipome and Ipad.  and Ipad. Now I'm told I need to upgrade my operating system. The apple store gave me conflicting instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new IPhone and Ipad. Now I'm told at the apple store that I need to upgrade my operationg system. They said they couldn't help and gave me conflicting advice about what to do. Any ideas? Thanks you!

There are three models of MacBook that comprise the 'macbook 4.1' category, and each of them a little different; however other than 'macbook 4.1' the other thing they have in common is they all are considered Early 2008. Two are white, one black, polycarbonate case, Core2Duo 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz white, 2.4GHz black.
So if you can determine which one, if any of these, is the model build year and spec you have, that would be handy. Did you tell whoever you spoke to the serial number of your computer, so they'd know by looking up the specs to see what the supported maximum RAM upgrade capacity was, and other minimum requirements to make any upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 at all?
If you have the serial number you can do a lookup to 'indentify by serial number' online, and use that information to determine if the computer needs even more RAM to take it past the minimum for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then get it ready to upgrade (via paid download from App Store, Snow Leopard gets you that far) and see what the next supported OS X full upgrade would be for the hardware limitations on that old MacBook.
If your MacBook IS a 4.1 build, the highest OS X it could run if it has the 2.4GHz cpu, is Lion 10.7.5. That would be an upgrade from the App store, available to OS X 10.6.8+ computers that access it online. And I kind of doubt how supported a newest iphone etc may be in lion.
everymac.com has a fair amount of information across many years of Apple computing hardware...
Here's the three MacBooks that share the 4.1 designation; first shipped with as much as 1GB RAM upgrade and the other two only a 2GB RAM*, (one white/one black color) according to this information...
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.1 13" (White-08) 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8100)
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (White-08) 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8300)

*But according to MacTracker (free: download database) http://mactracker.ca
these MacBooks can use more RAM in aftermarket specs as much as:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
To get more information use a service such as this...
    •identify by serial number:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
The Apple? store or whoever you talked, to may have been as accurate as they could be without further research. Could be you may have a newer or older MacBook, which would change whatever later OS X it could run past 10.6.8. And to go past Snow Leopard, you need to download the last bits for 10.6.x to be able to go and get any later upgrade. The ones that may let a newest iphone or ipad work with it, are past SL10.6.8
Anyway, as you further verify the model build year and configuration specifications, report back.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How can you FORCE Classic mode to run on an Intel Mac? OS 9 emulation Rosetta Software Design

Hello everyone, I had a few thoughts on running Classic mode on intel macs which I wanted to share.
Now I know little about software design, but maybe someone who does could tell me if these ideas I had are at all feasible:
Now in the first place I now that, technically, "Classic" mode went out back with Tiger because of the switch to Intel chips. Switching to Intel, Rosetta was required to "translate" pre and non-intel OSX applications, with the exception of Classic since Rosetta does not translate deep enough into the system to do that. As a substitute to Classic, SheepShaver, Basilisk II, etc. can be used to emulate OS 9, but these are very lousy applications compared to Classic mode.
Is there ANY way whatsoever Rosetta could be edited, or Classic itself so that it will work on intel macs?
(that is, with the exception of 10.7+ systems since these don't even use Rosetta)
I know if Classic was placed on an intel mac, it would tell you to download Rosetta, but from there will crashes because frameworks in the system's library does not support (or was not designed for) Classic...
So what I wanted to know:
What if an old, Classic supporting PowerPC system's library folder was added to an Intel computer in a location other then that computers real system folder (as not to confuse the real, current system) and Classic manually edited so that it would search for the needed frameworks/etc files in the new location? Would it work?
Since, after all, it now has the correct "system" to run on (which before Rosetta could not convert), do you think there's any chance it would work and function properly?
Now beyond that, I wouldn't know the actual results (or consequences). I suppose the main problem to consider would be that the the PPC's system frameworks/etc wouldn't work at all on an Intel (which leads us back to Rosetta lacking in this area), and since those frameworks will be searching for other files in the system library (which would bring them to the current, Intel system) the same results would happen: crash! Or maybe sensing the system was mixed up, one or more files would try to "fix" themselves, and in turn destroy the computer's real system.
So, would it be worth a try?
I'd love to hear any other thoughts on running Classic on Intel...

There is an "easier" way to acquire SheepShaver called Chubby Bunny and I have put together a post with some safe links that are relevant to this topic.  I see that emaculation is one of them.
Why do you need OS 9 greater than 9.04?
Feel free to let me know if you need any more help.
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included.

  • Slow performance on Intel Mac a damaged disk?

    Hi,
I'm experiencing very slow performance on my Intel Mac 216 Ghz core duo, with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Running OS 10.6.8. Have been experiencing reduced performance, can't use Entourage email or Chrome, Firefox browsers at the same time. Ran Utilities to repair permissions, only a Java set of issues. Disk Utilities found no problems with the disk.  Have experienced this issue increasingly for 5-6 months. Using Activity Window i see that Entourage, Word, Safari, Chrome, even System Preferences pane sometimes "Is not responding". Other system services take longer than before.
Apple support had me get larger RAM chip. Now have 2GB Ram. Upgraded to OS 10.6.8 with no improvement. Ran Software Update several times.
I have no anti virus software, have disabled Spotlight and any other memory demanding software. I'm on a in-home wi-fi network on an Airport Extreme.
In addition, at startup it takes 15+ seconds for the keyboard (wired) typing to show in the log on field. Running a single account with Admin access. Screen refreshes slow at times. Currently running is Safe Boot mode but that's not helping much.
Read on this board discussion 23238910 to use Terminal Window to do a syslog comand. The results in the Text Edit reads

I need to resolve the issue as it's killing my time!

It does not sound good for your disk drive.
I suggest you backup everything to an external disk drive ASAP.

  • IChat does not work on intel macs

Has anyone with an intel mac gotten this to work successfully? Of course you probably wouldn't be here if you did. But if anyone had problems and eventually resolved them. How?
I've gone through the basics, opening ports; taking out the router (AirPort Express); turning off the firewall; unpluging everything, including the power cord; still nada. Everything is downloaded and up to date with security patches. My bandwith is unlimited on iChat and the intranet/Lan for Quicktime (and I've toggled on and off the instant on option) and I have a FTTH service with 100MBps ceiling on up and down and never hit anywhere near that (so it isn't a bandwith issue). Repaired permissions in disk utility about a million times. I've verified that the other computer I'm trying to connect to is up to snuff according to the suggested specs through the various blogs posted here.
And frankly I'm at my wits end. I've given it my all, and can't get back to the apple store until this weekend, but if it isn't fixed there and then (if not before by the advice of you helpful folk), they're taking this DOA computer back and I'm taking my money back.
So any last advice before my fateful trip to apple land? Anything I'm maybe over looking? Would posting the report from when it crashes help anyone sort this out? I'll do it anyway:

    Hi Jester,
    Two things,
The Quicktime setting is going to need to be 1.5Mb as iChat dislike LAN/Intranet
iGlasses is not going to work with iChat unless you ask iChat to run with Rosetta.
Go to the File Menu and use the Open With Rosetta option.
This is because you may not have the iGlasses as a Unviversal coded Add-on. See the third bullet point.
Update it if required. Delete it for Trouble shooting (Crashed Thread 11)

  • Blinking Green Light! Mount & Unmount on Intel Mac mini

    Hi all.
This is my sister's iPod shuffle, lat night she plugged into her new Intel Mac mini Core Duo, and the shuffle mounts, everything appears to be in working order, she said today she still listened to it.
Just now she accidently plugged the shuffle while in our Dad's account (on the Mac mini as well), then seemed like "all well broke loose", this is what she told me, first iTunes was not responsive, colour wheel, so she restarted but only arrived at the blank desktop and only the shadow of the Top Menu Bar
I reset the iPod shuffle, was successful in plugging it in, quit iTunes (all in her own account now) and update the shuffle software.
When inside iTunes, once I started Autofill, it suddenly unmounted by itself, followed by the red exclamation error message when you accidently remove an external device unproperly.
When I tried plugging in again, it refuses to mount. Just blinking Green, or pull out again, blinking Yellow.
Now I plug it into my own iMac G5, and it mounts and is blinking slowly with yellow light, what seems to be normal charging.
Has this something got to do with the Intel Mac??
    Thanks and cheers

This probably has nothing to do with the Mini, but everything to do with the Shuffle. Like all flash memory, it is susceptible to damage if unplugged at the wrong time.
For the shuffle, you cannot remove it while it is updating or in Disk Mode. This warning is presented in the User's Guide and is repeated in several other places throughout the Support pages as well.
The general rule is: If it's blinking amber, don't unplug it before you unmount it. Unmounting can be done either in iTunes or in the Finder.
About all you can do, given the symptoms you're seeing, is try to Restore it. See the instructions in the User's Guide and/or on the iPod Shuffle Support Page.

  • Thinking about switching to Intel Mac Mini... questions for the cognoscenti

    Greetings:
I've been checking out the new Intel Mac Minis and I was thinking of purchasing one to replace my AV computer (PC) in the living room, which the GF currently uses. She's a typical user: watches video files/DVDs, uses iTunes excessively , sends web email and surfs the Net.
I've fairly decided on an Intel Core Duo Mini. Since I know the basics about Mac, I had a few questions:
    1. What's an appropriate amount of RAM for a non-power user? Would 1 GB be more than enough or overkill? I'm used to running 1GB in a Windows machine. Plus, I'm also used to popping in memory when I needed to upgrade, and I see that's not really an option on the Mini.
    2. How would I integrate it into a Windows network? Would the Mini be able to share files with a Windows machine and vice versa?
    3. Regarding network integration: how easily would the Mini integrate into an existing Linksys 802.11g home network?
Lastly, this isn't really an (easily) answerable question, but how easy do you think it would be for an average computer user to get up and running on a Mac after having used Windows machines all their life?
Thanks, I look forward to your responses.

Hello, I can only really answer Q's 1 & 3 as I've only owned a mini for the past 24 hours.
I purchased the Single Core after taking advice of the Apple Store staff in Manchester, they were quite helpful. I only really produce music (have used Ableton, Acid Pro etc on PC for quite a while), surf the web, do my banking etc so was advised that the Single Core with 512mb would be sufficent. I work for an ISP and have 10 years plus knowledge of Windows but I was prepared to listen and learn having never used a mac before. From my own experience, I'm used to having to use a pc with minimum spec ie min 1.2GHz processor, 1gb ram in order to produce music without any pops or clicks (latency), though sound cards also play a part. I've also had to keep internet activity well away from any PC that I produce music on in that respect. Anyhow, I'm going off on a tangent here but I was playing around with garageband last night and I've never known music production to run so smoothy on 512mb RAM, never known it before so was extremely impressed and certain I made the right purchase opting for Solo Core. You may not actually NEED the full 1gb though this depends what you're doing. To answer your other question, my mac slotted straight into my home nertwork without making any additional configuration.
i.e how long does it take to get used to a mac, I've found there is a learning curve but it's not THAT difficult, it's just the odd thing such as no right click of the mouse that takes some getting used to.

  • New Intel Mac mini: Is 1G Ram Enough?

    Hello everyone.
I intend to get my dad and my sis (upgrade from her old iMac G3) each a new Intel Mac mini Core Solo.
I understand that the new Intel Mac mini shares the ram memory between the processor and the "in-built" graphics... also understand from an Apple KB docu that it is best to pair the same ram to maximise efficiency or something...
My dad will be mainly in iPhoto, organising his digital photos, burning CDs and touching up a bit here and there; And both of them will be using mainly to surf, email, chat, maybe a bit of word processing etc - I would say "light to moderate work"
So is 1Gb of Ram enough for the processor and the graphics? I would probably try to max out as big a hard disk for them... and a 19" monitor...
    Thanks and cheers

If he can afford it, I would recommend putting 2-1G modules in there. OS X loves RAM and will call for even more running apps under Rosetta.

  • Can't Migrate from G4 to Intel Mac Mini

    Hi
I have been unable to migrate files from my old G4 destop to my new Intel Mac mini. I wonder if anyone could help.
I first tried first using the migration assistant on the Mac mini and used the G4 as a fire wire drive. Failed twice, the process froze both times.
Erased Intel Mac mini and tried to do a restore from G4 using Disk Utilty. Failed twice. Didn't complete process.
I then tried the same twice using Supe Duper. Completed process (took hours) but in both cases couldn't boot Mac mini. Get the folder icon on boot indicating can't find system (I think).
I though I would then clean re-install system files from restore disks that came with MIni mac and start a fresh, but won't allow me to do this !! Spent two days and no further forward.
    Any suggestions ?
Would erasing Mac mini and and trying Carbon Copy Cloner work ?
Can I add files manually from G4 to mac mini ?
    Thanks in advance.
G4 ibook. G4 desktop, mac mini (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Exactly which model G4 tower do you have? The
PCI-graphics G4 towers do not support FireWire Target
    Disk Mode.
If FWTDM works, have you replaced the hard drive that
came with the G4? Technically, Apple claims FWTDM
will only work with the OEM (original) hard drive
that came with the G4 tower. If you've replaced it or
added a second drive, it might not work correctly in
    "target" mode.
If you do have a new hard drive, you should be able
to put it into a FireWire (or USB) external hard
drive case and use the Migration/Setup Assistant to
    copy your files over.
If you're still having trouble, you can copy your
files over manually. Do you know which files you're
interested in copying? If your G4 tower works in
"target" mode, but the Migration/Setup Assistant is
having trouble, you can usually just drag all the
files and folders from your user's old home folder to
the new folders on the new computer. (Macintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures > NewMacintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures)
    -Doug
Yes I did change the hard drive to a bigger one so that may be the problem.
When I use the Traget mode I do see my "old" drive (both partitions) on my desktop so it suggests firewire is working.
Won't take everything across including applications, library etc.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thank you for your time. Geatly appreciated.

  • Running an Intel Mac on a Wireless Network with other Power PC Macs

I know changing the Airport to WPA encryption will allow an intel Mac with either Mac OS or WinXP OS to access the airport.
If you have powerPC Macs also, what encryption will allow both Mac (intel and powerPC) and WinXP to access the airport?
Right now either WEP for all Macas or WPA for intel Mac (Mac & WinXP).
    Help
Mac Mini (Intel), iMac, eMac, iBook, G4, & Powerbook (all powerPC)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   also 10.4+

    Hi Sherwood!
If I recall correctly, an update to Windows XP (assuming you're using Windows XP) added WPA support to the existing WEP support. The same applies to Mac OS X.
Regardless, if both OSes are up-to-date they can use either WEP or WPA. But WEP and WPA should not be used at the same time for the same wireless network. Choose one and set your Airport first (create your infrastructure) and then set all computers to connect using that same security (add computers to your infrastructure). I suggest using WPA becuase it is more secure than WEP.
This link indicates when you can use WPA on your Mac and this link indicates when you can use WPA on your Windows system.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Bootable Backup on Intel Macs?

I read this on the internet. Has anyone checked this out?
A Bootable Backup for an Intel Mac
Shortly after I got my shiny new 20″ Intel iMac I read in a forum somewhere that booting from an external firewire enclosure was no longer supported on the Intel-based Macs. I was disappointed to hear this, because I’ve used this feature on my PowerMac in the past to great advantage, it makes upgrading your system hard drive very easy, and the same would apply to recovering from a hard drive failure.
I decided to try anyway, so I connected my IoGear Ion external firewire drive to my iMac and started a disk cloning operation using Carbon Copy Cloner, a very popular Mac backup program that works well on my PowerPC based Macs. It kept asking for my Admin password, and it eventually locked up without having finished the backup.
Then I tried LaCie Silverkeeper with no luck either.
Next I bought a shareware license for a program called ChronoSync, which seems to be well written, but also failed at the task of creating a bootable system backup. In a later email exchange with the author of that program I was told that kind of an operation was “not supported”.
Finally I tried Synchronize! Pro X from Qdea, it worked. In only 3 hours it copied 182gb of data across a firewire connection to my external drive, and the OS X Startup Disk preference pane saw the disk as bootable. I’ve done a test boot, and it worked flawlessly.
I like to keep a mirror image backup of all of my computers. It has saved my cookies (literally and figuratively) on more than one occasion. I did have to pay $99 for a license for Synchronize! Pro X, but I consider it to be money well spent.

Well... If you are using CCC, the only way to use it to restore would be to start up from the bootable backup and run CCC from there. Unlike Disk Utility, CCC can clone the disk being used for startup; Disk Utility want the "source" disk to not be "busy." On the other hand, if you are using Disk Utility from the Mac OS Installation Disk, the backup does not need to be bootable. The backup can even be a disk image, which has the advantage of not occupying the entire external drive.
A bootable backup has several advantages. First, running from an optical disk is slow if you are going to be making backups at regular intervals; I'm not sure if want to boot from the Mac OS X Installation Disk so often. Second, the bootable backup will serve as an emergency boot disk to diagnose problems that you may have with the internal drive. If you buy tools like DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro, you can run them from there.
If you want a full identical copy of the internal drive, the following would be ideal... Get an external drive that is larger than the internal drive. Partition it so that it is bootable for Intel and with TWO partitions. Make the first partition about equal in size to the internal drive (it can be somewhat smaller since you will never fill the internal drive to 100%). Make the second partition the rest of the space.
Use CCC to make regular backups of the internal drive to the bootable second partition. As an added precaution, copy just your user directory to the second partition and keep it in sync with the one on the internal drive. You can do this manually, or with a tool like ChronoSync. Why the second user data backup? Because during the time when you are using CCC to clone the internal drive to the first partition, there is risk. At that moment, the previous backup is gone, the new backup is being written, and the "original" is actively being accessed. If there was a internal hard drive failure, or a power failure, you could lose the original and not have a backup. But if you have that user data backup on the second partition, at least you did not lose what's most important. Though inconvenient, you can always spend a day reinstalling the OS and apps from scratch.

  • My Intel Mac does not start.

My Intel Mac does not start. When I turn it on I hear a loud beep (a sound I never heard before) and then I see the spinning wheel and nothing else. I tried to start from the installation disc, I also try to reset the SMC and the PRAM. Nothing worked. I replaced the RAM cards too. It is a IMac 24"/2  Intel. Model number A1200 2006.

When I turn it on I hear a loud beep
Beeps are an indication the RAM (memory) is failing or has failed.
Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
If you feel confident doing this, you can purchase RAM online. Crucial comes highly recommended. You can use their scanner >   Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - Crucial Mac System Scanner
And uninstall the bad RAM, then reinstall new >  iMac: How to remove or install memory
Or, take your Mac to an Apple Store.
The beep sound is not permissions related.

Does anyone know if NX client for Mac works under the Intel Macs? I've got a linux box (SuSe 10.0) at work on which I have NX server set up so that I can access my stuff easily from home. Will be adding the MBP to my home network, and am wondering if NX client for PPC will work under Rosetta. So far, no intel Mac NX clients appear to be available.

I'm pretty sure that the NX client for PPC would work under rosetta, however is NoMachine the only option for accessing your SuSE box? Is this the only protocol allowed by your employer for remote access? How about using X over SSH or VNC? these are much more open standards of remote access that are fully supported "Out of the box" with Intel Mac OS (they are totally free too!)
