Adding memory myself  easy or?

I have only 2GB on my Intel iMac, 24"   Would like to uograde to  say 4 or 6GB.  Can I do this myself?

Of course you can - it is quite easy!
If you'll post some specific model info on your Mac, we can maybe help steer you in the right direction.
Here is an Apple article on how to install (it is also in your owner's manual):

(not sure if these are your model, but the method is about the same for all)

  • I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new Ipome and Ipad.  and Ipad. Now I'm told I need to upgrade my operating system. The apple store gave me conflicting instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new IPhone and Ipad. Now I'm told at the apple store that I need to upgrade my operationg system. They said they couldn't help and gave me conflicting advice about what to do. Any ideas? Thanks you!

There are three models of MacBook that comprise the 'macbook 4.1' category, and each of them a little different; however other than 'macbook 4.1' the other thing they have in common is they all are considered Early 2008. Two are white, one black, polycarbonate case, Core2Duo 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz white, 2.4GHz black.
So if you can determine which one, if any of these, is the model build year and spec you have, that would be handy. Did you tell whoever you spoke to the serial number of your computer, so they'd know by looking up the specs to see what the supported maximum RAM upgrade capacity was, and other minimum requirements to make any upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 at all?
If you have the serial number you can do a lookup to 'indentify by serial number' online, and use that information to determine if the computer needs even more RAM to take it past the minimum for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then get it ready to upgrade (via paid download from App Store, Snow Leopard gets you that far) and see what the next supported OS X full upgrade would be for the hardware limitations on that old MacBook.
If your MacBook IS a 4.1 build, the highest OS X it could run if it has the 2.4GHz cpu, is Lion 10.7.5. That would be an upgrade from the App store, available to OS X 10.6.8+ computers that access it online. And I kind of doubt how supported a newest iphone etc may be in lion.
everymac.com has a fair amount of information across many years of Apple computing hardware...
Here's the three MacBooks that share the 4.1 designation; first shipped with as much as 1GB RAM upgrade and the other two only a 2GB RAM*, (one white/one black color) according to this information...

*But according to MacTracker (free: download database) http://mactracker.ca
these MacBooks can use more RAM in aftermarket specs as much as:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)

The Apple? store or whoever you talked, to may have been as accurate as they could be without further research. Could be you may have a newer or older MacBook, which would change whatever later OS X it could run past 10.6.8. And to go past Snow Leopard, you need to download the last bits for 10.6.x to be able to go and get any later upgrade. The ones that may let a newest iphone or ipad work with it, are past SL10.6.8
Anyway, as you further verify the model build year and configuration specifications, report back.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Laserjet 6p added memory unknown???

I have a 6P and it has an installed memory card on one of the 3 available memory slots.I can not tell what the size of the memory card is and called the manufacturer who said that its model number is no longer available in their database. I held down the printer button and got the LaserJet 6P printed page but it says "PLC6 MEt Memory Enhancement technology 2 mbytes".   I believe that is the internal installed memory and doesn't include the added memory card. Is there anyway I can determine the size of this added memory card? Also, when I print PDF files, it takes a very long time for each page to print...maybe a minute per page. If I switch to Raster, then the pages print normally.  Any ideas on this issue as it only happens with PDF files that I have to print. Win7 Ultimate  64bit. using the Win7 print driver for HP LaserJet 6p.

Thanks for the additional info. As far as being confused...the only two options I have in the graphic mode is HP_GL/2 or Raster so I don't know why they are on my LaserJet if they are not suppose to be.I'm not sure what driver I am using...when I print out the test page it says PCL6 so I guess that is the driver installed. There is no other place that tells me that I can find.  When I go to HP support there doesn't appear to be a way to get PCL5 as it refers me to Windows for printer drivers on my model.I guess I'll just have to remember to switch to Raster each time I do a PDF file. Thanks for all your help.

  • Added Memory, but not showing up in System Profilier

I have an iBook G4 1.2Ghz/12-inch screen laptop. Bus speed 133 MHz. It has 256 MB built-in memory. I added a stick of 512 that is appropriate for this computer. (PC 2100) It is seated correctly, and the clips are in place.
However, when I go to the System Profiler, it still only shows my Built-In Memory, and shows that the DIMM1/J7 Memory slot is Empty.
Is there something I need to do to get my computer to recognize the added hardware?
The odd thing is, my computer really does seem to be using the added memory, as I can now have multiple applications open without slowing or freezing.
    Thanks,
    Sonya

You are correct. When the Mac starts up it checks for RAM, no configuration needed on your part. I would suggest taking the chip out and putting it back in to make certain it's pushed in correctly. It should actually "snap" or "click" softly into place.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.11 (from 10.3) & adding memory.

I was wondering if anyone could/can help. I recently upgraded my OS and added memory to my woefully out of date G4. For some reason I now cannot see an external harddrive (firewire) nor can I see my Ibot webcam. When I go to my Hardwear Overview and click on Firewire: nothing appears.
    Here's my system info:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
Is it possible that the upgrade/additional screwed up my firewire capabilities? If yes, what do I do to fix it?
    Here's hoping someone can help.

  • I added memory to my MacBook Pro (now 4gb) and upgraded to Lion. Now my iphone 4 won't sync-gets stuck at stage 7 of 8 on importing photos. My iphoto is'09 version 8.1.2

I recently added memory to my MacBook Pro so I could upgrade to Lion and use the cloud for my contact list. It's been a bit of a mess, since I use Entourage as my email program.  The REAL problem I'm having now is that my iPhone 4 now won't sync.  iTunes "quits unexpectedly" at stage 7 (of 8) in the syncing process, where it says it's importing photos.  My iPhoto is '09, version 8.1.2   Is this not compatible with Lion?

I have the same problem. I'm suspecting a corrupt photo, but the logs don't give me a clue. Or maybe this version of iTunes needs some further tuning.

  • 1 January 1970 appears in my contacts as duplications even though I have not added this myself, is this a virus? What should I do?

1 January 1970 appears in my contacts as a duplication even though I have not added them myself, is this a virus? What should I do?

In my contacts, several contacts that I actually know have been duplicated using only the first name in this duplication. Also in the duplication, the birthday and  anniversary are listed as 1 January 1970. I have not made these duplications...they have just appeared. Does this mean I have a virus? And if I do what should I do?

  • Added memory

I would like to have any info you guys can give on adding memory to Set top box. Am I looking for a seats hard drive? How many gigs of memory are needed or available for this addition? Any info would be appreciated

On my recent post>>>I meant to say I want to add an external hard drive and what I've read is, My Motorola HD DVR QIP 7216 1 is supposed to be compatible with an eSata hard drive. Is this correct? I've looked in the back of my STB and it has a slot for a Sata connection. Is this the same as eSata? If anyone can give me some info I'd appreciate it. Also...how difficult is it to configure?

  • When adding memory does slot matter

I just picked up a gig of RAM to add to the 512 MB that came with my powerbook. I was wondering if it made a difference as to which slot the 1GB or 512MB was in. Which configuration works best? Thanks for any help.

  • K8N Neo4 Plat - added memory - no OC - help!?

    Hello,
I added 2 additional 512Mb sticks (TWINX1024-3200C2) to existing 2x512 of the same (for total of 2Gb).
First off - the system didn't post. Reset BIOS - posted. However, now I cannot overclock to where it was before.
    Was - 240 FSB, HT Freq 4x, CPU ratio x9. Mem clock 166MHz, 2.5-3-3-7 1T --> CPU clock 2160, DDR clock 200
Now - I can only go up to 230 FSB with the same HT and CPU ratio - I had to change mem to 3-3-3-8 2T (wouldn't post otherwise)
Any idea how to speed it up a little more?
    Thanks!
    --max

    Thanks!
OK, I kinda figured 2T point by myself (it wouldn't post with 1T no matter what).
    Memory is way below 200MHz..
Oh.. well.. I guess I'll just give up and RMA it... Should've read this forum before buying..

The s939 Athlon64 revision E memory controller officially supports 4 memory modules at 200 MHz (DDR400) and a 2T command rate only, 1T is just not possible anymore. On most boards even DDR400 is too high, you might have to fall back to DDR333 to run a stable system. Bottom line is that 4 memory modules is just not the way to go on an Athlon64, it will seriously limit your overclocking possibilities and memory performance.
If you really want to give it a go with 4 modules, you can try to play around with high memory voltages (at your own risk of course). It might help you to get it stable at DDR400 at acceptable latencies. Forget about running a 1T command rate though...

  • Adding memory of different sizes

I have a Mac Pro 8 core running with two 1GB memory sticks. I'd like to add additional memory. I'm looking at adding 4x2GB memory sticks. Is there any reason why I couldn't install the 2GB sticks and leave the 1GB sticks in the system for a total of 10GB of RAM? Some systems perform better if all the memory is of the same size and I'm not sure if that holds true for Mac hardware. This is my first Mac and my first memory upgrade so I wanted to make sure before I purchased anything. Right now, all I'm using the system for is Final Cut Studio 2.

You are suppose to move Riser B / DIMM 1 up to Riser A DIMM slot 2.

  • Adding memory modules...

I am currently running leopard on a 1st generation Mac pro with 4GB of ram from ramjet.com. I would like to add more ram to to it and am a little confused. To get maximum performace, I unerstand I fill all the memory slots. I am thinking about adding 2x2GB modules (replacing 2x512MB). Will this be ok? to have 7GB of RAM? will this still take advantage of the 256 bit addressing? Thanks.
    John

In order to take advantage of quad-channel interleaving you must install RAM in equal-sized quads, e.g., four 1 GB DIMMs, four 512 MB DIMMS, four 2 GB DIMMs. Having four modules of differing sizes does not do the trick, although you must install RAM at least in equal-sized pairs.
I assume you currently have two 512 GB DIMMs and two 1 GB DIMMs giving a total of 3 GBs. You could replace the 512 MB DIMMs with two additional 1 GB DIMMs giving you a total of 4 GBs as an installed quad of equal-sized DIMMs. You can then populate that other riser with four more DIMMs of equal size. You could install four 512 MB DIMMs (thus using the two you already have) giving you another 2 GBs for a total of 6 GBs.
    Get the picture?

  • [865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!
    Please help!
    I'm running this system:
    Win XP (SP1 I believe)
    865PE NEO2 PFISR
    P4/3.0CGHz, 800M 478P/512K HT
    DDR Corsair 512MB X4 (400)
Dual 80gb samsung HDs running SATA
    Sapphire X800GTO 256M video card
    Antec Sonata case
    TruePower 380Watt ATX12V

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.

  • Adding memory Intel Mac 24"

    I have a may 2008 Intel iMac 24".
I'd like to double memory from 4gb to 8gb.
Being under Apple Care, shall ask APple
    to do this ?
Can I do it myself without voiding warranty ?
Last : which memory should I choose for best results ?
    Thanks.

To make things very simple the maximum memory a 2008 iMac will address is 4 GB. Look in your owners manual for the correct RAM and the specifications of your machine, trying to add memory beyond Apple's specifications is a waste of time and money as the results are always the same......it will not work.
This subject has been covered many times in this forum, the results are ALWAYS the same.

  • Album art added by myself not transferring from iTunes to iPod

Hi. I just synced my library to my new iPod and everything is working fine except for some album art issues. The album art that is added by right-clicking in iTunes and choosing 'Get Album Artwork' copies across fine, it's the album art I've added myself that doesn't copy over (where album art would be displayed I just see a large blue musical note.)
I don't know much about iPods, this is my first one, so following the advice of a friend I've restored the iPod then re-synched it and that hasn't fixed it.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Sometimes you have to make sure that each individual song has the artwork attached to it, rather than the album as a whole. Try that on one album to see if it works. In iTunes, right click on a few songs (one at a time) in the albums that are giving you trouble and verify that the artwork is attached to them.
Also, I've noticed on the new Nanos that you sometimes have to first delete a troublesome album from the Nano, then replace it--unlike earlier iPods (or it might be earlier versions of iTunes) which would actually update that information when you sync.
